<h4>Snapshot</h4><ul><li>Contentful just launched new products and capabilities focused on digital teams.</li><li>Features include enhancements to its Contentful Platform, Contentful Studio, and Contentful Ecosystem. </li><li>The new Experience Builder provides deeper visual composition capabilities.</li><li>Generative AI has been introduced for content and image creation along with AI-powered partner integrations.</li></ul><hr /> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-sloan-213515/">Steve Sloan</a> is excited.And why shouldn’t he be? There’s a lot of cool stuff happening under his watch. As CEO of <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/contentful">Contentful</a>, he’s manning the helm at a leading content platform, deftly navigating the choppy waters of composable and staring down the waves of change with innovative solutions.“We’ve seen a lot of evolution in the past five or six years,” he said in our recent chat. “This space is pretty different than it was in 2017 or 2018. And honestly, there's a lot going on, but I think it's an incredibly exciting time.”Steve took the wheel in 2019, just as the composable threshold was being breached in earnest (and the pandemic was still on the horizon). As he observed, a lot has changed – but Contentful has been a steady engine of headless innovation through this modern era of transformation.That trend line is about to get longer. Today, the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.contentful.com/livestream/">announced</a> the launch of several new products and capabilities to its composable platform – including AI-powered advancements – that effectively unlock all digital content across an organization to deliver impactful experiences at scale. There are three key components to the company’s announcement: high-utility enhancements to its Contentful Platform, the new Experience Builder in its Content Studio, and the expansion of partnerships and technologies in its Contentful Ecosystem. Contentful has also incorporated a variety of generative AI-driven capabilities within each leg of the tripod.I spoke to Steve about the new products and capabilities, which will be the central topic of discussion at the company’s last two stops of its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.contentful.com/storylines/">Storylines Tour</a> in Silicon Valley and Berlin later this month. I was also treated to a demo preview from Contentful’s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/maireado/">Mairead O'Donovan</a>, Chief Product Officer, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/satyak/">Satya Krishnaswamy</a>, VP of Product Management.<h3>Delivering meaningful AI to Contentful users</h3>As indicated, AI is intricately woven through each of the three areas included in the announcement, providing new capabilities that solve problems for digital teams. Steve shared a bit on the genesis of the investment, and how AI is providing some of the connective tissue across its new offerings.“In the last 18 months, it became clear that we need to help the entirety of the digital team, not just the developers,” he shared. “And so we're endeavoring to do that. That's number one. But number two has been the emergence of generative AI. For content and experience creators, the opportunity to use these tools to create more variants for personalization was an obvious story, and a lot of people have talked about it. The piece that I think was less obvious, we realized coming out of an experiment we did.” As Steve described it, they compared <a target="_blank" href="https://openai.com/">ChatGPT</a> with several other emerging generative AI platforms, giving them all the exact same task with a standard rubric for quality. What they discovered is that their accuracy was anywhere between 60% and 80%. “In my job, being right 60% of the time? That’s not good enough,” he remarked. “Particularly if there's anything at stake – including our reputation. The models are great in terms of being predictive, but they’re frequently based on a broad set of contexts. The biggest challenge is how do you train your model on the content that is most trusted? Your bots will only be as good as the content or the data on which they have been trained.”<hr /><h4 style="text-align:center">In the last 18 months, it became clear that we need to help the entirety of the digital team, not just the developers. And so we're endeavoring to do that.”</h4><hr />Here's where Contentful saw an opportunity to thread the needle. By helping customers increase access to their most trusted content – from CMS to CDP to DAM – they could further scale the creation of rich, omnichannel experiences. This led to the evolution of orchestration across systems, but it also allowed AI to be focused on the right content to train models for maximum accuracy and efficacy.  “As an API-first platform, [our users] store lots of trusted content directly in Contentful,” Steve said. “But then you also have important content that lives in other systems that can be trusted. In Contentful, we can make it easy to include content you use across any device or experience. But it's also used as the place in which you can train your models.”As Steve noted in the company’s press release, generative AI has ushered in a new era – one where we all can accelerate creativity by leveraging the power of machines to improve speed, experimentation, and collaboration. This will have a significant impact on how we create, deliver, and interact with content.“At Contentful, our vision is unlocking the power of digital content for our customers, and we are already enabling this power through our latest composable content capabilities, infused with the power of AI, with more planned on our product roadmap to help digital teams reach their full potential.” <h3>Orchestrating everything in the Content Platform</h3>The enhancements to the Contentful Platform are plentiful. At their core, they enable developers to break down content silos and orchestrate content from any source across an organization. The net effect: teams create and deliver digital experiences at a faster clip but with brand governance, consistency, and scale.Contentful’s references and cross-space references effectively “unlock” content from different systems – think DAMs, PIMs, and commerce platforms – as well as within Contentful itself. This helps teams efficiently leverage all their content for reuse in any digital experience across brands, regions, and use cases.“As you know all too well, work happens in silos,” Steve emphasized. “A lot of stuff gets handed off via email, and all these other very, very clunky ways of working. And going back to grumpy customers, they get really frustrated with it taking too long because different teams work in different ways. So, the ability to bring that together? We think that’s really compelling.”The embellishments to the Content Platform also include enhanced enterprise governance and security, including an expanded EU data residency footprint to help address data protection and compliance needs. From an AI perspective, the platform also features an AI Content Type Generator, which was previously announced. It streamlines the content model creation process so developers can accelerate time to market. As Steve noted, this is a useful attribute for a marketer, but also a tool that improves how people work together. <figure class="image image_resized" style="width:82.87%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/10/contentful-content-modeler.jpg" /></figure>Another great enhancement is the generative AI-based Visual Content Modeler, which creates the baseline for someone who isn’t as technical to set up the structure at the beginning of the process. This enables marketers to start the process and reduce the burden on developers.  “One of the things we also saw was that creating content models – thinking about content in a structured way – it's just not something that everybody knows how to do. But it's essential to be able to be able to scale your experiences over time and make them consistent.” <h3>Visually composing with the new Experience Builder in Contentful Studio</h3>In my demo with Mairead O'Donovan and Satya Krishnaswamy, I was blown away by some of the new features in the Contentful Studio – namely, the new Experience Builder. <img style="width:54.31%" src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/10/contentful-mairead-satya.jpg" />Contentful Studio already empowers digital teams – including marketers, designers, and content creators – to manage and even visually assemble digital experiences for any channel, all without developer support. The Experience Builder takes composition to the next level. It provides a familiar, easy-to-use visual canvas that allows users to create on-brand experiences using their own design system components with a structured content foundation. This enables teams to combine creativity with governance to ensure consistency and scalability across every experience.As Satya walked me through the demo, I was immediately impressed by its elegance and simplicity. The UI was clean and compact, providing quick access to component libraries and content elements. It all felt very easy. <figure class="image image_resized" style="width:80.01%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/10/contenful-experience_builder.png" /></figure> With Contentful’s enhancements around external reference consolidation – and the use of its GraphQL API – all of the assets being used are complete with detailed information from their source system. For example, if a product originates in commercetools, Contentful delivers all of the relevant product information in JSON. Marketers no longer have a blind spot with just a product ID or have to go back to an outside system. Contentful delivers it all in a single call. Pretty slick. AI is also present throughout the Studio experience. Users can access the improved Content Generator to quickly create or recommend content, translations, and SEO keywords. The built-in AI Image Generator can also be used to render or manipulate images on the fly. <figure class="image image_resized" style="width:80.35%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/10/contentful-ai-image_generator.jpg" /></figure> “This new set of products is really directed at non-technical marketers,” Steve said. “And because it's built directly on top of Contentful, they still have all the benefits of structured content, which allows them to store, manage, and scale any type of content delivered to any device anywhere in the world in milliseconds. So you get all the benefits of the platform, but you have a purpose-built tool for non-developers.”<h3>Expanded partnerships and integrations in the Contentful Ecosystem</h3>According to the press release, the Contentful Ecosystem includes a growing portfolio of solution and technology partners, all with the goal of helping customers get to market faster with impactful digital experiences – the kind of experiences that meet customer expectations and drive business value. As part of the announcement, Contentful has added <a target="_blank" href="https://www.contentful.com/newsroom/">new partnerships and enhanced integrations</a> from a deeper bench of best-in-class enterprise solutions. This includes <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/aws-joins-mach-alliance-as-enabler-member-reflects-growth-of-cloud-native-solutions">AWS</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/salesforce-unveils-composable-storefront-a-digital-commerce-solution-to-help-retailers-go-headless-fast">Salesforce</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sap.com/index.html">SAP</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://segment.com/">Twilio Segment</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/commercetools-acquires-frontastic-adds-composable-frontend-capabilities-to-headless-commerce">commercetools</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/bigcommerce-review-an-easy-to-use-choice-for-ecommerce-shops">BigCommerce</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://cloudinary.com/">Cloudinary</a>, and WPP – enabling digital teams to improve accessibility, analytics, and performance, simplify front-end dev, and streamline content operations to bring differentiated experiences to life quickly. This adds to the 80 partners that are already building on Contentful. As Steve pointed out, the growth in the ecosystem is being driven by composability – and choice. “Earlier on, there was this notion that we want to create great experiences on top of a cohesive platform,” he reinforced. “But customers demanded choice, right? And so giving them the opportunity to use the tools they need, not just the tools you happen to have – I think it's a very, very different orientation than the DSPs that are monolithic."AI is also present in the ecosystem, largely due to the focus on artificial intelligence by other technologies and solution providers. Advancements from partners include the new AI Content Detector from <a target="_blank" href="https://writer.com/ai-content-detector/">Writer</a>, which enables users to assess content that might be generated by AI so that they can maintain transparency and integrity. Additionally, the <a target="_blank" href="https://surferseo.com/">Surfer SEO</a> app delivers AI-driven search engine optimization, helping digital teams drive website traffic more effectively. <h3>What’s the availability and cost of the new features?</h3>Most of the new products and features are generally available and will begin rolling out in a limited, early-access program. Customers can expect additional announcements and updates to follow, particularly on AI. Contentful is finalizing the pricing and packaging details, which it plans to announce at a later date. That said, on the AI side of the ledger, the market is drowning in noise – and it’s become exceedingly difficult to communicate real differentiation when many features swimming in a sea of sameness. What I really appreciate about Contentful’s approach is its focus on the customer. While others rushed to add AI, they took their time experimenting – but also breaking down the voice of the user to understand what’s at stake. They also doubled down on their efforts to solve real problems with orchestration, which unified content in new and impactful ways while providing the added benefit of training AI more effectively. And all their innovation was amplified by a deeper investment in their partner community. It looks like a win-win-win. As Steve mentioned, the word “trust” is going to be at the top of our collective AI vocabulary list. That’s a human construct, by the way – something AI can’t grasp. That means we need to focus on the right training, governance, and guardrails to deliver something that can truly be trusted. “A big part of it comes back these grumpy customers and understanding what their pain points were,” he conveyed. “They're really the inspiration for everything we're building, and our solution partners helped us discover those moments of pain and possible ways to solve it. We have a very active Partner Advisory Board, where we work with CTOs who are very close to our shared customers and their challenges. And we spend a lot of time getting input from them, finding creative ways to solve this next generation of problems.”

Varty’s Videos: A CTO’s Take on Next.js

The other was joy.As he explained <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/07/opinion/happiness-joy-emotion.html">in an article</a> recapping his experience, “happiness” usually involves a victory for one's self, usually around personal accomplishments. “Joy,” on the other hand, is the transcendence of self—or as he put it, “the present life gives you as you give away your gifts to others.”Once upon a time, the web was a joyful place to explore. It felt new and undiscovered, a world where almost anything was possible. There were fewer walls and more open spaces, and building experiences felt creatively ambitious.My, how things have changed. In today's world of <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/what-is-a-content-management-system-cms">content management,</a> practitioners might struggle to say they’re happy when creating experiences—and even less happy with the CMS tools they use.But are they experiencing joy? When was the last time you felt joyful about managing content? It’s not a trick question. Heck, Dominik Angerer <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/storyblok-is-writing-its-next-chapter-with-an-80m-series-c-heres-why-it-matters">has personally told me</a> that he’s never had a customer leave because of his product, and that speaks volumes about Storyblok’s culture and customer intimacy.Said more simply: They understand their users. On its surface, Storyblok Labs is a kind of early-adopter skunkwork for rolling out new features. It’s an incubator for experimenting and optimizing its tools for prime time and developing an effective feedback loop within an exclusive channel. But Labs is more than this: It’s an investment in the value of partnerships, a vessel of trust for loyal and emphatic users who are on this journey together and contributing to the evolution of Storyblok’s CMS. While not an apples-to-apples feature comparison, I dig how Storyblok is supplying a similar canvas for creating and connecting the loose parts of a content ecosystem—and driving it all back to its Visual Editor. In this sense, they’re improving the overall authoring and editing experience and attracting more users to work in its platform across the content lifecycle.Finally, the composable angle can't be overlooked. Storyblok continues to add the right kinds of features while reinforcing its value within composable architectures as the engine for powering digital experiences. Developers continue to have deep control while editors now have robust visual tools for doing their jobs more effectively. The Storyblok Labs “playground” is a great “proving ground” for nurturing these new attributes and gaining valuable insight around impact—particularly as brands build more ambitious solutions. We might not be happy with everything about our CMSes. However, some vendors are trying to think beyond the mundane and help content creators visualize a more joyful experience. Can content management be ‘joyful’ again? Storyblok Labs promises fun and possibility in its innovation playground  

<hr /> It wouldn’t be December without a Christmas story that warms your heart. Especially if it’s three sizes too small. Of course, every good holiday tale needs a protagonist who experiences some magnificent transformation. So let’s start with a little Scrooging before pouring the spiked egg nog.Our merry friends at <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/storyblok">Storyblok</a>, a headless CMS that has positioned itself simply as a “content management system,” recently published some sobering survey data. The big takeaway: 93% of marketers and developers say their current CMS is falling short of expectations, and a lot of the frustration stems from integrations.To that end, the consensus among survey participants is that platform integration failures could impact revenue this holiday season, a time when brands and retailers are banking on digital commerce to stuff their annual stockings. ‘Twas the nightmare before Christmas? Indeed. And it's likely to result in an urgent call-to-action to improve reliance on the stack – specifically the CMS layer – in 2025. Ho, ho, hold on a minute. It’s not to say that cheeks aren’t rosy in other areas of the digital marketing machine. The study indicated that businesses are spending an average of over $453,000 on martech per year. That’s healthy by any measure, but the effectiveness of that investment could be in jeopardy if <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/what-is-a-content-management-system-cms">content management systems</a> aren’t living up to their fullest potential. So what’s a brand to do? It’s not as simple as asking Santa for a solution. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/storyblok-is-writing-its-next-chapter-with-an-80m-series-c-heres-why-it-matters">Storyblok’s CEO Dominik Angerer</a>, whom I’ve spoken to multiple times this year, the core challenges can be traced back to legacy systems that lack flexibility and interoperability – and a move to headless could turn that lump of coal into a diamond.“This survey shows that many companies are hitting the limits of their current CMS,” he said. “They are dreaming of a CMS that’s keeping all their systems in sync without constant workarounds.”And dreaming of sugar plum fairies who deliver an easy transition, right? Therein lies part of the problem: moving to a new CMS can be costly and time-consuming, and embracing composable architectures (more the domain of large enterprises) can take years to fully realize. Time is also tight, and organizations need to move quickly, especially when the holiday blitz is a 'Blitzen. This is why many platforms have embraced a multi-CMS ecosystem – with a strong reliance on headless platforms – to roadmap a more holistic solution. But is headless really the panacea for all these challenges? Let’s unwrap some of the data that Storyblok left under the tree.<h3 id="deck-the-halls-with-integration-frustration">Deck the halls with integration frustration</h3>With customers like Adidas, Netflix, and Disney on its roster, Storyblok has cultivated deep insights around use cases and patterns for headless CMS at a global enterprise level. That was clearly a benefit when conducting the research, which reflects how some of the world’s biggest brands feel stymied by outdated legacy tech stacks that can’t keep pace with their evolving needs.For the research itself, Storyblok surveyed 300 IT and marketing leaders at global businesses, a third of which had stated revenues of over $100 million. Participants were asked a range of questions about their company’s CMS with an explicit focus on the arc for integrating new tools and applications as part of their existing tech stack. One important note, which speaks to the reality of the enterprise market and a smidge of headless bias: all surveyed companies in the report use monolithic CMSes. That’s not a shocker, but it’s a relevant assumption that the data might be telegraphed around inherent criticisms of large enterprise CMS and DXP platforms. To that end, 93% of respondents aired grievances, specifically around the limited integration options with other services and tools in their tech stack. Two in five also stated that they are constantly in need of a better integration experience, while a quarter found integrations “difficult,” illustrating the urgency for more flexible solutions.So much for the “seamlessly integrates” tagline that often accompanies the marketing around many platforms in the ecosystem. Humbug.<h3 id="all-i-want-for-christmas-is-up-to-date-content">All I want for Christmas is up-to-date content</h3>Outdated content is an epidemic, particularly for highly distributed global organizations – and it’s not just at the CMS layer. Maintaining up-to-date digital assets has been a precarious function as well, which is why we’ve seen significant investments in <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/cloudinary-assets-brings-new-ai-powered-features-to-its-api-first-intelligent-dam">AI-powered capabilities across DAMs and PIMs</a>. As Dominik Angerer stated in <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/storyblok-is-writing-its-next-chapter-with-an-80m-series-c-heres-why-it-matters">one of our previous interviews</a>, “A CMS can’t just be a place where your content is sent to die." And yet, it often is for so many companies – something the research also manages to codify. According to the study, frustration over outdated content continues to be a widespread problem. Most respondents reported that 20% to 30% of their CMS content is no longer relevant, with only one-third updating content on a monthly basis – or less. To make matters worse, 37% admitted to not having an audit or update process that works for them. Translation: there’s no reliable governance, which can result not only in poor experiences for users but also financial and even legal liabilities. <h3 id="jingling-with-marketers-and-developers">Jingling with marketers and developers</h3>The elves aren’t playing nicely in the workshop – a fact we’ve been abundantly aware of for quite some time. As headless CMS platforms rose in popularity, marketers were left in the cold, becoming more reliant on developers to modify their digital experiences. At the same time, monolithic CMS and DXP platforms inherited more complexity (often through acquisitions), resulting in a similar paradigm.I’ve been chatting about this with <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/uniforms-enterprise-visual-workspace-unifies-content-data-ai-and-technology-in-a-single-cloud-for-marketers">industry leaders like Darren Guarnaccia</a> for the last few years. In 2023, he noted that while composable headless technologies are a boon for developers and technical audiences, “it’s been kind of horrible for the businesses.” This reality underscored the mad rush to add visual building, previewing, and editing capabilities to CMS tooling – from <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/optimizely-introduces-new-saas-cms-with-visual-builder-for-marketers">Optimizely</a> to <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/agility-cms-web-studio-aims-to-streamline-content-creation-and-collaboration">Agility</a> – and nearly every platform now has it as an expected feature. But these new capabilities are still catching up, and technology isn’t the only sore spot. According to Storyblok’s research, the collaboration between marketers and developers continues to be strained, with 40% saying it’s either “ineffective” or “nonexistent.” That’s a big number, and likely reflects some of the cultural challenges that exist between marketing and IT functions.What’s at the core of this rift? Basic stuff, really. For example, a marketer might want to update a post or make fast edits across multiple pages. Unfortunately, in many legacy CMS deployments, that might require the help of a developer each time (Darren referred to these instances as “tickets,” which those of us with support experience know all too well). This is because certain types of changes in a CMS are often complex and can ripple across an entire site. Of course, this back-and-forth can create huge bottlenecks and delays, utlimately adding months and potentially extra zeroes to the cost of a project. But Dominik feels this is where a modern headless CMS can differentiate and solve the problem. “A headless CMS can eliminate these holdups,” he said. “These flexible, integration-friendly systems meet the needs of both marketers and developers.”<h3 id="last-christmas,-i-gave-you-my-content…">Last Christmas, I gave you my content…</h3>And the very next day? Well, at least some users start a slow, downward slide toward CMS regret. In fairness, the honeymoon might last a little longer. But when you’re sold on the potential of “seamless integrations,” only to find that things aren’t so seamless, it feels like Krampus coming down the chimney. At this time of the year, brands are under increased pressure to drive conversions and sales. Clearly, some teams are disillusioned by their experiences and most of the blame lands in the boots of the tech stack. And yet, the problems persist. Storyblok published a previous study that revealed almost half of all businesses are literally “embarrassed” by their website. Ouch. That same report also found that business leaders estimate a poor website UX leads to $72,000 in lost sales each year.To be sure, there’s some predictable marketer’s lament in all of this (every brand pro is on a quest for what they don’t have). But it does codify how disappointing a legacy CMS experience can be for many users and organizations – despite spending all that previously mentioned cheddar on martech. Looking ahead, integration will continue to scale in importance. This is due to the accelerating growth of new technologies and the persistent need to manage data from multiple systems. According to Storyblok, this must be prioritized – because what’s at stake is the continued erosion of time, money, and resources.There are many choices when it comes to CMS platforms. Most are solid in their own way, and it’s usually not just the architecture or functionality that makes them naughty or nice – it’s how they’re applied as part of a broader stack. In some cases, headless is an ideal solution. But when a decision about any CMS isn’t carefully approached, it can result in a less-than-satisfying outcome.In terms of reaching the limitations, some practitioners might be approaching their problems from the wrong vector – and certain strategies could be employed to resolve the bottlenecks and challenges. In this case, headless CMSes have an advantage when it comes to integrating with other solutions that displace the issues or extend capabilities in the right way. That said, large enterprise DXPs have made significant headway when it comes to delivering more modular solutions for their customers, which can offer some of the same benefits of interoperability and API-driven integration. Do you mine a lump of coal, hoping it keeps burning? Or do you make the leap to something new? This realm of optimization is something that many organizations will be wrestling with as they assess the 2024 holiday season and beyond. The good news: we’re talking about the challenges, and working to overcome them.Who knows? Maybe next Christmas will bring some cheerier numbers. Legacy CMS leaving a lump of coal in your stacking? Research says the best gift could be headless

<hr /> During a recent <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/agility">Agility CMS</a> “Ask Me Anything” webinar, I was subjected to a trifecta of “dad jokes” – courtesy of <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/playing-to-win-in-the-headless-cms-game-interview-with-joel-varty-cto-at-agility">Joel Varty</a>. In addition to his part-time standup vocation, Joel is the Chief Technology Officer of the Toronto-based headless <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/what-is-a-content-management-system-cms">content management system</a>, where he’s spent almost two decades innovating around digital experiences and supporting notable brands like Cineplex, Mitsubishi Electric, and ScotiaBank.As a comically blessed father myself (IMHO), I appreciated his technique and material – especially the closer about a sad math book that couldn’t solve its own problems. Insert rimshot.Dad jokes aside, Joel is as cool as they come on stage. I’ve seen him bake under the hot lights of the now-famous <a target="_blank" href="https://www.boye-co.com/blog/2024/8/kajoo-wins-cmsidol24-montreal">“CMS Idol” competition</a>, and from my perspective, he’s one CTO who keeps his demo muscle in solid shape (I’m sure there’s a dad joke in there). As advertised, Agility’s AMA session effectively “pulled back the curtain” on its new <a target="_blank" href="https://agilitycms.com/product/web-studio">Web Studio,</a> which promises enhanced features for customers to create, preview, and collaborate on web content. Web Studio reflects a tacit transformation we’ve been seeing across the headless CMS market, one where pure-play platforms have been bridging the visual gap. Content creators want a simple UI that enables them to see exactly what their stuff will look like when it’s live. At the same time, they need to collaborate with team members to preview, review, comment on, and approve their pages before publishing. Agility's Web Studio delivers the full monty and then some – with dynamite features already penciled in on the roadmap. The company has flown Web Studio with a few test pilots as part of what it calls its “Ambassador Program,” and the solution is getting solid reviews. As part of the AMA, I got a first-hand tour of Web Studio, and I concur. As billed, it’s a heckuva lot more than just a WYSIWYG editor. By reducing the friction to share and connect within the system, Agility is offering a more human (er… humane?) experience – one that can reduce the challenges around communicating and collaborating.<h3 id="instant-field-locking-and-built-in-commenting">Instant field-locking and built-in commenting</h3>Content collisions are a pain, but version conflicts might be a thing of the past with Web Studio’s slick new field locking feature. Simply slide the lock button into place and you effectively control your session. At the same time, your collaborators can see what fields you’re working on and what changes you’re making in real time. Users can also leave comments with total ease. Just tag a team member with an “@“ and leave a notification, comments, or even reactions. You can also resolve the comment once you reply, making the function more like a task assignment or project management feature. You can also access a full history of comments. All around, it’s definitely a win for users and teams.Once you see the commenting and collaboration tools, it’s logical to thread the needle with other communication tools in the broader ecosystem. As Joel indicated, users can expect both email and Slack notifications in the near future.<h2 id="previews">Previews</h2>Out of the box, Web Studio provides both a staging and preview environment in addition to your live view. It’s all easily within reach. You can also leverage the <a target="_blank" href="https://github.com/agility/web-studio-sdk">Agility Web Studio SDK</a> to decorate the fields and components. Previews also work with pages and content items. A big upgrade: you’ll be able to switch between multiple deployments, an action that's been less flexible in the past in Agility.  <figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:86.64%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2024/11/agility-web-studio-preview.jpg" alt="" /></figure>Web Studio provides a seamless preview within Agility as well as easy-to-use commenting features You can also manually expand or collapse your window to preview and inspect different device sizes. That might sound like a simple expectation with most modern CMS UIs, but it's more fluid than you think. The word “silky” comes to mind, and it's worth seeing in action.One other cool benefit is the commenting mode, which allows you to click anywhere and leave comments on your preview. It's just another example of how collaboration has been baked into the foundation of Web Studio.<h3 id="decorating-components">Decorating components</h3>This is where developers can customize their components for editors. As Joel demonstrated in real time, you can access code in Agility to decorate your component fields, making it easier for developers to render changes and empower content creators to do their thing. Once his changes were complete, it was all pushed to <a target="_blank" href="https://vercel.com/">Vercel</a>, and… presto. Ready in minutes.As he noted, it takes a little more time to set up new components the right way, but doing so ultimately enhances the editor experience. Joel reinforced the importance of this vital relationship between developers and content creators, and how it can unleash greater value.  <h3 id="the-critic-consensus">The Critic Consensus</h3>Visual editing and preview capabilities have become an expectation for every headless CMS. But delivering the right mix of capabilities – wrapped in a simple yet satisfying experience – is the real dealmaker. Agility Web Studio offers a differentiated visual experience and a fantastic upgrade to the platform’s easy-to-use interface. With trick features like the Presence capability, users should find it intuitive and (dare I say) fun to interact and collaborate around content. Yes, good documentation is a must-have; ultimately, we're trying to empower our users and get out of the way. But it’s also a signal of what’s stirring in those golden headless cornfields, particularly as vendors add more visual building, editing, and preview features to enhance their offerings.As a tool, Builder.io accelerates the production of digital experiences, allowing users to free up developer capacity to focus on other higher-level tasks, like developing algorithms that predict the curve on a spitball. A big part of its winning play: an AI pitch with some real fire. In the race to make things faster and better, developers felt the headless heat while marketers were left in the cold, dreaming of drag-and-drop features as they opened laborious IT tickets to add things like basic buttons to a page.I’ve been talking to a lot of headless vendors since the start of 2024, and most are on the journey towards “healing” this rift, regardless of their audience or market focus. Obviously, Builder.io has its own niche, but even more pure-play headless vendors are adding editing and preview features. It wasn’t so long ago that a headless CMS didn’t sport any of these attributes. Now, it’s starting to look like a requirement to compete – and a must-have for users evaluating tools.  Are we seeing an evolution of the “headless CMS” category? If so, what will buyers expect in this new landscape, and how do vendors avoid creating even more confusion? In the case of Builder.io, the answer seems to lie in the pursuit of value. Their growth and investment opportunities are being driven (in part) by a hunger for greater freedom and control, and platforms that understand where they truly deliver their greatest value will be loading the bases.<h3 id="building-on-success">Building on success</h3>Launched in 2019, Builder.io has been firing line drives up the middle of the market, delivering continued year-over-year growth. This latest round follows an infusion of <a target="_blank" href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/10/18/builder-io-aims-to-make-developers-happy-with-its-no-code-approach-to-digital-storefronts/">$14 million</a> from Greylock and a cohort of investors in 2021 – that’s akin to a respectable ERA for any player in the league.  A bit of backstory: the journey to Builder.io started with Sewell and co-founder <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/brentlocks/">Brent Locks</a> while working together at ShopStyle, an e-commerce fashion company. The duo embraced headless architectures to power web apps and streamline their development, which was great for them, but not so much for marketers who wanted to update pages and run tests.With code standing in the way of testing and development, retailers (in particular) got resourceful, drawing on their survival instincts to solve problems. This resulted in the use of third-party tools that dragged down performance and governance. With Builder.io, business teams get everything they want in a page builder, from managing the right web flow to a rich drag-and-drop visual editor for building and editing. At the same time, developers get the benefits of a headless CMS that’s API-driven and tech-agnostic, so it works with any tech stack – from Angular to React. You can also connect with any data source, including commerce platforms like <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/shopify">Shopify</a>, CDPs, legacy homegrown systems, or even another CMS.As we’ve heard from other visual-focused platforms like <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/is-the-birth-of-dxc-the-death-of-dxp-a-conversation-with-darren-guarnaccia-president-at-uniform">Uniform</a> (once champions of the now less-amplified “Digital Experience Composition” cabal), development and code are often the bottlenecks for many customers, specifically those in commerce. Builder.io promises that marketers, product managers, or designers can use existing components – or create their own – to build out content, run A/B tests, and measure conversions.<h3 id="an-ecosystem-of-freedom-and-control">An ecosystem of freedom and control</h3>One of the things I’ve always liked about Builder.io is its focus on simplicity. The UI is incredibly intuitive, with navigation access to a range of features and resources. This includes a myriad of design tools as well as A/B testing, versions, history, and more. <figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:85.45%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2024/05/builder-io-screenshot-2.png" alt="" /></figure> With its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.builder.io/m/visual-headless-cms">Builder Visual CMS</a>, you have a component-based block system that enables almost anyone – literally – to create experiences in a snap. Users have full control over exactly what a team can drag and drop to create bespoke designs or pages that are conformant with existing design systems. Everything is built around responsiveness at its core, with the ability to add custom animations and theme assets that fit with your brand. Anything you build can also be saved as a template.There are a host of collaboration tools, including granular roles and permissions and real-time “multiplayer” editing that avoids conflicts when more than one user is making changes (that one is super handy for teams). You can also track and roll back to previous iterations.  <figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:85.52%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2024/05/builder-io-screenshot-3.png" alt="" /></figure> I think the optimization features really stand out. Builder.io weaves in both multivariate testing and analytics, so you have the complete lifecycle for managing your A/B testing initiatives. Even cooler: they offer heat maps to help reveal key insights about user engagement.<h3 id="from-figma-to-functional-code-with-visual-copilot">From Figma to functional code with Visual Copilot</h3>Design-to-code workflows are notoriously slow, impeding go-to-market strategies for enterprises and digital retailers. With the rise of design tools like <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/figma">Figma</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/uxpin">UXPin</a>, the process has accelerated to be sure (in the case of <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/uxpin-merge-review-sync-react-components-with-prototypes">UXPin’s Merge</a>, there’s even a design library that syncs with React components in Git). But it’s still mired in that complex step of turning visual ideas into functioning web and mobile experiences. There are a few platforms out there that are doing yeoman’s work to streamline the journey from prototype to product. I’ve seen some great demos for platforms like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/1139976468567117030/kajoo-ai-design-to-code">Kajoo AI</a> that export Figma designs to <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/top-jamstack-static-site-generators-for-2021">Jamstack</a> code – including HTML, CSS, React, NextJS, Vue, and Angular.The Figma translation is also a big part of Builder.io’s focus. With its AI-powered <a target="_blank" href="https://www.builder.io/m/design-to-code">Visual Copilot</a>, you can move designs into clean, reusable code in 80% less time with a single click. You read that right: one click. Visual Copilot really bridges the gulf betwixt developers and marketers, allowing anyone to utilize a simple plugin to convert their Figma designs to semantic code that’s automatically responsive. Components in Figma can then be synced with Visual Copilot for use in the future. The AI code editor is a massive timesaver and eliminates a ton of complexity, but developers can work in Builder.io to directly refine the code as needed – so there are no compromises on control and output.Next up on the roadmap? Builder.io is already <a target="_blank" href="https://www.builder.io/m/accelerate-feature-waitlist">thinking about new features</a> like instant component set generation, and even a prompt-to-design solution for creating high-fidelity Figma designs that utilize your existing design system. This is now blending into the domain of products like <a target="_blank" href="https://dorik.com/">Dorik</a>, where AI is being used to create fully functional experiences with nothing more than a field and a few words.                                                                                                               <h3 id="why-it-matters">Why it matters</h3>A quick note on Field of Dreams: if you’re not familiar with the classic 1989 film, it’s a peculiar mashup of existential fantasy, theology, faith, and family – all draped in the Great American Pastime.Said another way, it’s about baseball… and what lies beyond.This movie is a great tableau for how Builder.io is transforming the space, specifically with its focus on AI. For those of us who remember building websites with nothing but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver.html">Dreamweaver</a>, we pined for a magical solution that converted visual designs into working code. Seeing it finally materialize is, in a word, dreamy. I encourage you to try it for yourself; it’s quite stunning to see how seamlessly the Figma processing occurs. Obviously, the more complex a design, the more tweaking that might be involved. But overall, it’s pretty darn polished – and a quick <a target="_blank" href="https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/747985167520967365/builder-io-ai-powered-figma-to-code-react-vue-tailwind-more">read of the comments</a> on the Figma plugin page validates that fans are cheering. We could spend a lot of time discussing the visual builder's numerous benefits, which are impressive in themselves. And yes, this is a novel approach to creating digital experiences, but it’s also content management – and Builder.io positioning its platform as a “visual headless CMS” is indicative of the change we’re seeing across the category. When <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/kontentai-aims-to-lead-a-new-era-of-content-management-relaunches-brand-and-website">Kontent.ai</a> relaunched its brand last week, the company’s leaders were quick to point out that the definition of a headless CMS was being challenged by all sides of the market, with traditional and composable DXPs muddying the waters (hence why they’re calling this a “new era of content management”).The shift is real – and with so many platforms bringing their own visual building, editing, or preview features online, buyers are likely to expect or demand these capabilities. Even open source headless CMSes like <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/strapi-casts-for-growth-in-the-headless-sea-a-conversation-with-ceo-pierre-burgy">Strapi</a> are introducing their own visual tools in an effort to maintain parity and improve the editing experience. There’s also the rest of the stack to consider, and like its peers, Builder.io is bringing asset management and other “DXP Lite” features to the table.Still, as Builder.io touts, it’s part of a composable play: use the frameworks you want, integrate with a range of third-party apps, bring in existing data and personalization tools. Heck, you can even use a different headless CMS. Choice – and the ease of making said choices – is key to composability.If you’re feeling confused about categories, you’re not alone. Along with Builder.io’s visual headless CMS, we have advanced headless CMSes, composable DXPs and content platforms, and other permutations among the dense field of competitors. A great example is <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/sanity">Sanity</a>, which positions itself as a Composable Content Cloud while reinforcing that it’s a “headless CMS and so much more.” Much to the chagrin of headless CMS vendors, traditional DXPs are also offering a headless CMS as part of their product ecosystem (or positioning their web API as a kind of headless expression), capitalizing on the surge around omnichannel messaging.  And herein lies the problem: how do buyers find what they’re looking for? The answer: they have to do more work.To help ease that burden, a headless CMS needs to be focused on establishing its value with clarity. I think Builder.io has a distinct advantage with its focus on the visual web layer, but it’s still leaning hard on the benefits of being headless. Nonetheless, M12 sees how that glimmering patina of value can translate into future subscriptions, particularly with users that want simple, drag-and-drop solutions – so this is where the dollars are drifting. Making your value meaningful to the market is the key. While pure headless platforms might still have their place, the expanded surface area of features is amplifying the value message. As buyers shop around, many will select tools based on the presence of these features – even if they’re planning an ultra-composable approach to their stack. With so much confusion on all sides, it’s hard to say where “headless” will end up as a distinct category. In the beginning, many argued that it was just a feature of composed content management systems (oh, the irony). Some players even attempted to distance themselves from the moniker. But that’s proven challenging given its weight within the industry lexicon, particularly relative to SEO. As such, it’s still here. Even if the path to home plate is a bit uneven. But who knows? <hr /> Sailing might not seem fast. A yawl or a sloop can’t hold a candle to a speedboat with twin outboard engines or a raging hydrofoil. But if you’ve ever seen the America’s Cup or a competitive regatta, you can’t deny that a supped-up catamaran – with the right crew – can move at dizzying speeds.   When I spoke to <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/critics/michael-lukaszczyk">Michael Lukaszczyk</a> last week about the launch of the <a target="_blank" href="https://hygraph.com/blog/hygraph-studio-beta">new Hygraph Studio beta</a>, the topic of sailing came up. It’s a subject I know something about: my father is a certified Coast Guard captain, and I grew up chipping barnacles off hulls in New England summers. Sure, I was a grunt on a mooring line, cleaning the head and emptying the ballast. But I learned other skills as well, like how to tie knots and tighten jibs in my dad’s salty shadow. One important lesson still sticks with me, and it’s never been more relevant to technology than now: The wind is always changing – and you won’t get anywhere if you fight it.  As a headless CMS in a highly competitive field, <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/hygraph">Hygraph</a> has been reading the wind and tacking in the right places. With this week’s release of Hygraph Studio, the company is listening to its users and doubling down on improving performance on a multitude of levels. The beta, which went live yesterday, is expected to be a first taste of the new experience, with a general release coming later this year. But it’s more than a new paint job on a fiberglass finish. “Hygraph Studio is a complete re-architecture and upgrade of our user interface optimized for maximum global performance,” Michael said. “We've been putting a lot of effort into making the whole thing as fast as possible globally, regardless of where you are on the planet or where your content is stored.”OK, so is it really faster? If you’re comparing Hygraph Classic to Hygraph Studio, you might just think there are a couple of outboard engines strapped to it. But like sailing, it’s more about the precision tuning that’s translating into higher performance. This comes down to a combination of UX enhancements, a new content asset management engine, and more. I got the nautical read from Michael about the Hygraph Studio release and what’s in store following the launch of the beta. We also discussed the UI improvements and the benefits of having a core asset management solution and how this is impacting performance on the open water. At the end of the day, it’s all about delivering higher content velocity, a recurring theme that has come up in our previous discussions. These upgrades aren’t just about a re-architecture that delivers speed, but the additional features and functionality that make it all a smoother ride.<h3 id="pulling-up-anchors-to-achieve-global-performance--">Pulling up anchors to achieve global performance  </h3>Like any beta, there are anticipated fixes and a roadmap for releases to come. But even with this first glimpse, there’s confidence at Hygraph that the acceleration will be felt in a profound way. For Michael, this is essential to the content management experience and all of its users. “Things being very snappy is really an important ingredient for content velocity, and it should not get in the way,” he remarked. “In content management, that's a little bit of our philosophy. Every second that's in the way of you actually making a change or an update is a waste.”Playing into the equation for speed are new global performance aspirations for Hygraph Studio. Up until now, Hygraph users have relied on API calls to the management database in Frankfurt, Germany – regardless of where their Hygraph project might be stored. Now, with the introduction of a new multi-regional deployment management service, proximity is no longer a drag. According to Hygraph’s data, the regional solution not only delivers faster load times, but also a 10x reduced latency for management operations globally. Michael said this is a big improvement for global customers, providing a more distributed solution that delivers maximum geographic performance for Hygraph’s growing customer base. “Australia is actually a very strong market and we're opening up new opportunities and more performance there,” he said. “We have quite an active user base in Japan, and they also now enjoy this new global performance.”<h3 id="smoother-sailing-with-an-improved-content-api">Smoother sailing with an improved content API</h3>With Hygraph’s content API, there’s also another big release under the hood that delivers much finer granularity on cache invalidation. As Michael noted, Hygraph’s customers already have strong API performance at the CDN level – but he sees even more improvement on the way.“Our customers have a cache hit ratio of roughly 90%,” he explained. “So 90% of their API calls hit a CDN, and they get the response of the headless API data. And that’s with document-level caching – which is much more fine-grained. We hope to get to the level of 95%.”It may sound like an incremental step from 90% to 95%, but as Michael noted, if you have millions or billions of API calls, there's a huge performance gain for the end customer.Clearly, there’s been a lot of infrastructure work under the hood (or tightening of the sails). But there’s also been a smart expansion of global resources that align with the company’s goals for growth, particularly in nascent or rapidly growing markets. <h3 id="enhancing-the-instruments:-delivering-better-ui/ux-">Enhancing the instruments: delivering better UI/UX </h3>Another key part of the Hygraph Studio beta and forthcoming GA are enhancements to the user interface. These will unfold in the weeks that follow the initial launch, but Michael indicated that there are many – some large, some small – and all designed with the user in mind.  <figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:78.38%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2024/03/new-intuitive-schema-view.png" alt="" /></figure> “There are macro UX improvements, but also micro UX improvements,” he said. “[For example] there's a new Command Menu, where you can hit Command+K to completely navigate throughout the application, and developers love this. In developer tooling, there's a new Field Outline in the content form, so when you're editing content in the form, you get a whole navigation outline.”And these are just a few of the upgrades you can expect from Hygraph Studio, which are tacitly designed to help users work faster and more efficiently. I had a chance to review some of the highlights firsthand, which include enhancements to content forms for faster, smoother navigation and modeling with nested components. There are also revised content tables for content-rich data.From an aesthetic perspective, there are also a few UI “facelifts” that improve on an already clean, minimalistic template. This includes upgrades to the Schema view that enhance the addition of models and fields. But the changes go beyond good looks and are keenly designed to reduce the number of clicks – accelerating each step of the modeling process.  Another notable addition: lazy loading of components, which delivers a faster load time when opening a content entry or nested components. It’s a simple thing, but one that can shave seconds of frustration when maneuvering through choppy waters.   <h3 id="improving-the-editorial-experience-and-adding-live-preview-">Improving the editorial experience and adding live preview </h3>I asked Michael what really drove the direction of the UI/UX enhancements, and what level of user will see the most benefits. Obviously, there are developers and editors on the ship, all trying to sail in a coordinated way – and historically, Hygraph has been more focused on the developer side of the crew.“So one key motivation for Hygraph Studio was improving the editorial experience significantly, because we come from a very developer-centric founder team and DNA,” he said. “We [have] always lived and breathed on the API side of things, but we’re now getting better with content creators. This has been a little bit of a weak spot from coming from such a developer-centric understanding of things, but of course, in content management, you always have those two parties. And we want to make both happy, so we're putting more and more resources into the editorial experience.”From that perspective, one of the most notable changes in the UI is with the content form, where you have an entirely new Field Outline for navigating content entries. As Michael described, it’s like using Figma or Adobe Photoshop, where you have your image layers assembled on the side. In Hygraph Studio, you can now see meta information gathered in a similar way along the left side of the editorial interface. <figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:85.58%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2024/03/hygraph-field-outline.jpg" alt="" /></figure>In the headless regatta, the race for the cup is getting tighter than ever. But Hygraph continues to differentiate around its focus on data, product development, and federated content. Still, user expectations are necessitating certain features – particularly when it comes to the visual layer. We’ve seen the growth of composable solutions and digital experience composition as a panacea for this missing link, but many platforms are now building their own tools. During our discussion, Michael revealed that live preview is on the near-term roadmap (although not part of the Hygraph Studio GA). However, he was quick to point out why an opinionated page builder is not the answer they’ve been after. “The one big feature on the horizon that is wished by many is the live preview,” he said. “It's a side-by-side editing [experience] where on the left you have a headless CMS interface, on the right you see the result directly. It's not a what you see is what you get editing experience. A good live preview provides a very quick feedback loop of what you're doing in the CMS and how your end results look. We don't have an opinionated page builder that’s reliant on elements that are dependent on the system, because we want to support product development for brands like Peloton or Netflix – and you don’t need pages in those use cases.”It makes perfect sense and might be exactly the right compromise for Hygraph’s target audience. As a composable platform, the new live preview feature could also complement third-party page builders that are powered by Hygraph, further elevating the value for the user.<h3 id="putting-more-wind-in-the-sails-with-core-asset-management-">Putting more wind in the sails with core asset management </h3>If the other features in Hygraph Studio are spinnakers and genoas (these are types of sails for all ye landlubbers), then the hoisting of the new Hygraph Asset Management system might be the main sail. I asked Michael why it was an important move to build a home-grown solution and how it might impact the performance and reliability for users. “We ripped out the existing asset management [system] which was provided by a third party partner, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.filestack.com/">Filestack</a>, and built an in-house implementation of asset management,” he explained, “which, in some cases, leads to performance improvements of 10x managing and operating assets. But it’s also [beneficial] when you clone projects or work within production, staging, or development environments.”On this subject of environments, Michael gave a simple and relatable example for CMS users: let’s say you want to implement a new feature and create content definitions with new schema, but you don't want to break your production environment in the process. In this case, you would use environments like “draft” or “staging” – similar to GitHub branches – to replicate, build, and develop within. Now, cloning such environments is much faster thanks to a core asset manager. “Before, we had to re-upload all the assets from one environment to the other using our third-party solution. So if you had a lot of assets – gigabytes or even terabytes – it could take minutes or even hours to build the environment. Now, it takes only seconds, because we have the asset management engine under the hood in our own realm. So it's more like ‘copy-paste’ within the system.”<h3 id="what’s-the-next-port-of-call-on-the-headless-seas?">What’s the next port-of-call on the headless seas?</h3>I think that’s weighing on the mind of every CMS “captain” who’s plotting a course for 2024. The winds they are a-changin’ – and for headless CMS vendors, there’s been a <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/the-dxp-kerfuffle-finding-the-big-chords-in-the-2024-gartner-magic-quadrant">clear shift towards a more DXP-like composition</a>, one where resources like asset management are becoming a part of the core (so sayeth some of the analysts). This is challenging the perception of what a “DXP” is in a composable landscape, particularly as traditional DXP vendors are offering headless and decoupled solutions as well.That’s why listening to the wind has never been more important, and Hygraph is clearly doing that by listening to its customers. While the introduction of core asset management is key to a more complete vision, the addition of live preview will further expand its value while remaining steadfast in its focus on data-driven product development applications. This clarity around its competitive differentiation is key. “For CMS vendors like the Storybloks out there, it cannot get visual enough,” he explained. “This is really catering to very static use cases that are building the experience that end users see, but this is very limited in the use cases that you can model. There's a big market for that, but a lot of competition because you can pay a lot for an enterprise headless CMS with a page builder or you go very low end on the pricing and use a Webflow or Wix – and that CMS is perfectly fine for those use cases.”One other way Hygraph is tacking with wind is by amplifying the focus on the editorial experience. As Michael noted, the company has been primarily developer-centric; this has been a perceived weak spot in its holistic strategy. Hygraph Studio aims to improve this with its myriad of UX enhancements and forthcoming capabilities. A good move, and one that demonstrates a strong commitment to the customer experience.For the buyer, it’s also getting harder to know where to drop anchor amid the shifting conditions. Hygraph Studio Sets Sail with Increased Content Velocity and New Asset Management Capabilities

<hr /> <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/strapi">Strapi</a> has always been a tenacious force in the headless CMS field. The platform delivers a healthy dose of customizability to its users and can play on the REST and GraphQL sides of the API court – maximizing its extensibility for querying content. Overall, it's super flexible for developers, earning it a whopping 60,000 stars on GitHub. Not too shabby.Last year, Strapi reached over 4 million downloads, putting it at the top of the open source headless CMS rankings. At the same time, <a target="_blank" href="https://cloud.strapi.io/">Strapi Cloud</a> – the company's fully managed offering – exploded to over 500 customers. These include major global brands like Publicis Sapient.According to Strapi's community forum, Strapi Cloud was a direct response to users who loved the Strapi platform, but weren't interested in managing servers, dealing with scalability, or coping with other laborious tasks (for those of you who still deal in Chef scripts, you know what we're talking about). The company really endeavored to reduce the friction around the overall developer experience, making it easier for users to get value from Strapi without the complexities of server management.Now, to make things even easier, Strapi Cloud has introduced a new Developer Plan for individuals and small businesses. This ensures developers only pay for what they need with no “gotchas.” In fact, the asset storage costs are fairly generous, with overage fees decreasing to just $0.5 per extra GB of storage for the Developer plan (and $0.6 per extra GB for Pro and Team plans).Who is the plan ideally suited for? Strapi Cloud Introduces New Developer Plan with Additional Features

<hr /> Humans love to muse about the future. And why not? It’s veiled in mystery, replete with speculation, and full of plot twists. That makes it both exciting and terrifying. Like… a horror movie.Along those lines, a word in the composable lexicon conjures some of the same exhilaration and fear: future-proof. While fairly intuitive, it's all about anticipating what might happen and developing strategies to minimize the shocks and stresses of possible future events.It sounds great, but it also presents a bit of a quantum entanglement. How can tools or processes remain malleable enough to adapt to unpredictable changes? How do organizations accurately predict and avoid the pitfalls (and classic horror movie tropes)?This is where the past and the present can help untangle the uncertainty, and it's precisely why software platforms conduct research: to help guide a future-proof strategy and thwart any potential nightmares. To that end, <a target="_blank" href="https://hygraph.com/">Hygraph</a>, a headless CMS known for its content federation, recently published an insightful survey on the state of <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/what-is-a-content-management-system-cms">content management</a> and what the future might look like. There are some terrific data points, and here's the big one: according to the report, 84% of organizations believe their existing CMS limits their ability to unlock the full value of their data and content. It further suggests that only 35% of current data and content is being used effectively. If this translates to a larger scale (the sample includes 400 engineering and product professionals in the US, UK, and Germany), the numbers represent a stagnant dissatisfaction with current CMS deployments. But these figures are just scratching the surface.I recently spoke to <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/content-management-for-a-new-reality-a-conversation-with-hygraph-ceo-michael-lukaszczyk">Michael Lukaszczyk</a>, co-founder and CEO of Hygraph, about the findings. It’s all part of what his company calls the “Future of Content” report, which pulls back the curtain on CMS challenges many businesses face when delivering modern digital experiences. The survey includes real-world input from tech leaders and prescribes a few strategies for overcoming some of the industry’s key obstacles.  While no one has the exact prescription for tomorrow, Hygraph’s report provides critical insights around trends and patterns, which might prove invaluable when selecting a CMS that’s future-proofed for what’s ahead – and maybe make things a little less scary.<h3 id="siloed-data-and-content-are-major-limitations">Siloed data and content are major limitations</h3>I asked Michael what he gleaned from the “Future of Content” research, specifically around the impact of value on organizations. Most of us in the content management field recognize a ubiquitous perception of the grass always being greener when users are asked about their satisfaction with a tool or stack. “We had 84% of people being dissatisfied with the current architecture and stack,” he codified.  “Well, it's been like this forever, and we want to change it. But a lot of companies and larger organizations struggle with the change management.”In that sense, the real challenge lies in the escape vector. Stakeholders might be keenly aware of the issues but are held back by the risks associated with implementation or migration. Along with this general malaise around unlocking value from their existing setup, Hygraph’s report also indicates that 92% of organizations say their content and data sources are siloed – with nearly 40% describing it as “very siloed.” As we’ve discussed in many previous articles, data from diverse sources and legacy systems have resulted in expensive and laborious integration code, which presents a drag on growth and innovation. This is where composable strategies and technologies are emerging as solutions – with many vendors, Hygraph among them, participating in the ecosystem as members of the <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/mach-alliance-publishes-first-annual-report-showcases-industry-impact-and-plans-for-2024">MACH Alliance</a>. <h3 id="custom-software-is-an-innovation-bottleneck">Custom software is an innovation bottleneck</h3>It’s always easy to blame the CMS. It is, after all, the elder statesman of the stack – and a relatively broad target due to its essential role across a myriad of systems and requirements. While any given CMS might perform a wide range of duties out of the box, it will inevitably fall short in some areas, forcing it to be stretched in different directions based on architectural dependencies. One of the biggest obstacles has been the need to tap multiple content and data sources. To that end, the “Future of Content” report revealed that 77% of respondents need to build and manage custom software to connect diverse content and data sources with their existing CMS. The survey respondents also concurred en masse that these integrations – which, as we know, can be very complex – create an innovation bottleneck with potentially severe consequences. <h3 id="cms-challenges-negatively-impact-productivity-and-revenue">CMS challenges negatively impact productivity and revenue</h3>With just a third of respondents stating that their CMS is effective at “underpinning new digital services,” there’s clearly a gap around readiness. But the report digs deeper into the details. According to the research, over three-quarters of respondents say that the difficulty of exposing and using existing data and content in their digital services has restricted their revenue opportunities. This is where the buck stops, shining a light on the most tangible result of a limited CMS. From a productivity perspective, 76% of respondents also say that technology constraints prevent them from empowering more content creators within their organization. At the CMS level, this is just as pronounced, with almost half of respondents saying that changes can only be made by a few users with essential skills. Michael noted that these limitations underscore the need for content federation, one of the key tenets of Hygraph’s position in the headless CMS market. He said this approach – alongside a headless CMS – could accelerate both innovation and revenue opportunities.“To compete in the content economy, organizations need to unlock value from content without bottlenecks or migration and duplication issues,” he said. “Content federation leverages all data sources across business infrastructure, and delivers it exactly where needed.”<h3 id="future-proofing-cms-for-a-world-of-content-rich-applications">Future-proofing CMS for a world of content-rich applications</h3>As Michael indicated, many of the existing challenges can be rolled up to having the right tool for the right use case, particularly as the market evolves to include more content-rich applications beyond websites. In his opinion, this shapes how users and organizations choose the platforms to build, manage, and ultimately future-proof their needs. “In the ‘Future of Content’ report, I observe two main trends [in the CMS market],” he explained. “The first is that headless CMSs are being reverted to become way more visual again. That is sort of the Storyblok and the Uniform stake, and this is to try and catch the demand of the business personas. It's really the static experiences that you build at the end of the day, like websites. But there's also the other direction, such as hybrid CMSs, that are more complex in data modeling and help you build really content-rich applications.” But how are content-rich applications evolving the charter? The example Michael gave is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.onepeloton.com/">Peloton</a>, which has two key properties in its digital ecosystem. The first is the corporate website, which is most likely owned by a marketer – someone who prefers a static build experience. But Peloton is chiefly experienced through its app, where users engage on stationary bikes and treadmills in video-based classes. These experiences also need a layer of content management.“Over the past couple of years, there’s been an increasing demand for this, and we see more and more companies with requirements for content management in their applications,” Michael said. “One of my predictions is that this will become more important. And if you want to build a more complex, content-rich application, then you wouldn't build the workout application of a Peloton with a website builder using a visual component. It's an application.”<h3 id="leveraging-the-benefits-of-content-federation">Leveraging the benefits of content federation</h3>Hygraph’s evangelizing of content federation cuts through clearly and continues to be one of its unique market differentiators. Its federated content platform represents what it calls the “next generation of content management,” evolving beyond a headless CMS to help power a many-to-many relationship between different content sources and devices. With Hygraph, you can effectively federate data from various sources, streamline content processes, and eliminate the need for a separate experience composition solution or custom middleware. This is also made possible through Hygraph's robust <a target="_blank" href="https://graphql.com/">GraphQL</a> content APIs.In an increasingly dense field of headless players, Michael and his team have trumpeted the benefits of content federation via real-world use cases, specifically around the ever-present challenge of migrating legacy content and data – and tapping composable capabilities to realize the potential.“Our recommendation is not to do a one-off migration, but rather replacing pieces out of the stack and modernizing step by step what you can,” he said. “If you use content federation with Hygraph, you can plug in a few of the systems that exist within your stack while the rest live in this monolithic scope. But they can live side by side – and then, as time goes on, you pull more and more pieces out of the old world into the new. So if you use tooling or have this layer that allows you to be the middleware – which is content federation – and it's a much safer migration path.”<h3 id="why-this-report-matters">Why this report matters</h3>It's a sure bet that any vendor-sponsored research will position its own platform as the go-to solution. This is, after all, a function of marketing at some level. But Hygraph’s report provides clear and relevant metrics in the right places while weaving in guidance from technology leaders. It’s worth noting that the survey was commissioned by Hygraph but conducted independently by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.colemanparkes.com/">Coleman Parkes Research</a> in the summer of 2023.Along with the raw numbers, the “Future of Content” report also provides guidance around eliminating bottlenecks, adopting best practices, and future-proofing your content strategy to achieve optimal performance. These additional benefits highlight the report’s emphasis on education across every facet of an organization, from technical to business – which Michael sees as critical for building consensus around the modernization investment.“I think it takes a lot of education for tech leads and architects,” he expressed. “They need to get the message that the technical depth in the stack is holding them back from achieving the business results they want. But if you talk to people who are more on the business side of things about technical depth, they don't see an internal rework as necessarily positive – they see it as pricey. It takes six months to rework all this, [so] they don't push those projects forward. But the report shows that there's also education needed for owners of those architectures, so they understand that modernization will pay off.
