Joy to the Content World: Storyblok Brings AI Innovation and Human Connection to JoyConf 2025

<hr /> <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/getting-started/intro">MCP</a> (that’s “Model Context Protocol” if you have an aversion to acronyms) is becoming a posh objective for technology vendors up and down the stack – and digital analytics platforms are no exception. In the past few weeks, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/umbraco-accelerates-ai-transformation-by-appointing-senior-software-engineer-to-focus-on-mcp">I’ve already covered MCP</a> in multiple places. But my proximity goes back to late last year, when the noise around agentic AI and agentic commerce was steadily increasing. In a matter of months, we went from a handful of early-stage MCP servers (based on the standards created by <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.anthropic.com/">Anthropic</a>) to tens of thousands. And there’s no slowdown in sight.The hype is well-founded. Along with the engineers I’ve connected with across CMS, DXP, CDP, and other platform categories, I personally competed in an AWS hackathon in July that required harnessing MCP for enterprise agent applications – so I know firsthand what the potential represents.This week, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/amplitude">Amplitude</a> joined the growing chorus of Model Context Protocol believers with the release of its <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://2b78cec6.streaklinks.com/Cn_nauWNjVaTJuhqDwH11l85/https%3A%2F%2Famplitude.com%2Fdocs%2Fanalytics%2Famplitude-mcp">Amplitude MCP Server</a> – and it sounds spot on. By leveraging MCP, the analytics leader is making its real-time behavioral insights available directly inside AI environments like <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://claude.ai/">Claude</a>, the ever-popular <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cursor.com/">Cursor</a>, or any MCP client. The benefits here are almost self-explanatory, but here’s a great use case: A marketer queries in natural language something like “What features drove the most retention this month?” or “What caused the drop in sign-ups last week?” Based just on that, you can get instant answers via live Amplitude data. As Amplitude's Co-Founder and CEO <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/spenserskates/">Spenser Skates</a> said, MCP was made for data analytics. You can ask a vague question and have an AI model iteratively query Amplitude to find insights. Amplitude's MCP exposes all of its functionality so an agent can interact with it directly, allowing you to use Amplitude without having to know anything about its user interface or your data taxonomy.By having everything consolidated in one place, users can also reduce that dreaded “swivel chair” effect and the immense cognitive overload of switching between dashboards. With this heightened consolidation and control, teams can focus their time and energy on drilling into what customers like, where the bottlenecks are, and what actions might streamline the experience.“Behavioral context is one of the most critical inputs behind every great product and digital experience. The problem is, AI tools are only as good as the context they leverage,” explained <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/wadechambers/">Wade Chambers</a>, Chief Engineering Officer at Amplitude. “Amplitude already captures and organizes behavioral data across the full user journey. So by extending this into MCP-enabled environments like Claude, we’re giving AI direct, governed access to that data. This makes the context instantly available and marks a major step toward the insights-to-actions loop becoming automatic.”According to Amplitude, one of its customers, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://zip.co/us">Zip,</a> is already seeing results – scaling expertise, accelerating analysis, and uncovering opportunities that were previously hidden.“Amplitude’s MCP is a real game-changer,” said <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/mpauly/">Moss Pauly,</a> Technical Product Manager, Data &amp; AI at Zip. “We’ve been able to embed our internal domain knowledge – how certain events are used to drive complex analysis – directly into an LLM’s context and have it interact seamlessly with Amplitude. It’s opening up access to cross-domain insights that previously only a few specialists could uncover. It’s a genuine step change in democratizing data across the organization.”<h3 id="building-an-agentic-strategy-to-power-analytics">Building an agentic strategy to power analytics</h3>Amplitude has been on an innovation tear as of late, adding <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/amplitudes-new-web-experimentation-upgrade-gives-marketers-3x-faster-testing-and-more-control">new web experimentation</a> capabilities with low-code, drag-and-drop editing, group cohort targeting, and self-service control.Earlier this summer, the company teased its forthcoming AI agents, which complement its MCP trajectory. This included a limited beta for its first series of AI Agents – intelligent assistants that continuously monitor product data, detect anomalies, and surface insights before teams even ask. With agents, teams can move faster, scale decision-making, and transform analytics into an ever-present system that drives growth proactively.Back in August, I connected with Amplitude’s <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/nithya-r-2a72794/">Nithya Rajendran,</a> a project manager working on the Web Experimentation and AI initiatives, about the frontier of Amplitude’s agentic investment. She provided some insight as to what kinds of functionality we can expect and the benefits. “Our Agents work in parallel with teams to tackle essential but tedious activities like monitoring data, spotting patterns and changes, watching user sessions, forming hypotheses, running experiments, shipping changes, and monitoring impact,” Rajendran said. “Our AI Agents are built directly into the platform to help automate these tasks, meaning work that used to take weeks can now take minutes."<h3 id="new-ai-agents-are-now-available-to-all-customers-">New AI agents are now available to all customers </h3>Last week, Amplitude’s AI agent beta program was opened to all Amplitude customers, with two AI Agents available at launch. The first is its Dashboard Agent, which analyzes dashboards and summarizes meaningful changes in trends, metrics, and issues proactively. With it, you can surface trends that require immediate attention and detect key week-over-week or month-over-month shifts.Amplitude’s Dashboard Agent also performs high-utility actions like root-cause analysis to identify segments or behaviors driving metric changes, giving marketers even more granular insight. It also enables follow-up analysis using natural language, generating new charts and answers automatically. Source: Amplitude website The other agent that’s now available is targeted at Amplitude’s popular <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/replay-it-again-sam-amplitudes-session-replay-everywhere-rocks-with-analytics-visualizations">Session Replay</a> capabilities, a handy resource that I’ve written about previously. The new Session Replay Agent automatically analyzes session replays across funnels or event paths at scale. It also surfaces behavioral patterns, drop-offs, and friction indicators like rage clicks, dead clicks, and user errors.The Session Replay Agent provides end-to-end qualitative analysis, backing insights with a curated playlist of relevant replays for faster investigation. And like its Dashboard Agent companion, it shares insights proactively via Slack, email, or directly within Amplitude.<h3 id="availability">Availability</h3>According to the company’s press release, its MCP is now available to all Amplitude customers. One thing we can watch for as its AI Agents roll out is the introduction of deeper MCP integrations, which the company says we can expect over the coming months. AI is amplifying the volume of everything, and brands need more insight than ever – not only to assess and optimize their product performance, but to understand customer behavior as it responds to changes and market pressures. As buyers move to different channels like answer engines, marketers need to make sense of these seismic shifts.Amplitude continues to reinforce its position as a leading voice in the digital analytics space, providing self-service visibility throughout the customer journey. This is precisely the space where agentic automation and MCP are right at home, and can potentially impact productivity and improve outcomes in profound ways.I like the dimensions of these initial agents. Marketers need to be closer to their data than ever, so they can make meaningful decisions; there's just so much of it, and it's impacting their strategic agility. As such, these tools are focused on key challenges that marketing teams face – and if they deliver as promised, could provide significant value. <hr /> We’re in the “All Agents, All the Time” era. You know it. I know it. And it’s not just the persistent media and marketing hype cycle. Agents are sometimes <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.moveworks.com/us/en/resources/blog/what-is-an-ambient-agent">ambient by nature,</a> running continuously in the background to monitor event streams, anticipate needs, and act autonomously without waiting for direct user prompts.So they are, quite literally, doing their thing all the time. It’s also host-agnostic, so it can support agents regardless of how or where they are built.But A2A is also about collaboration, enabling agents to join forces. For marketers, this could mean skipping the Red Bull and instead leaning on agents to perform urgent tasks like industry research overnight – so they have the insights they need to develop rock-solid campaigns as soon as they start their workday. Opal debuted in the Google Cloud Marketplace in July. With this new integration, Optimizely and Google Cloud are deepening their collaboration with an A2A-powered architecture that enables real-time collaboration between the two AI systems. Opal itself runs on <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/models">Google’s Gemini models,</a> giving marketing teams powerful, advanced reasoning to analyze complex data and generate intelligent, personalized campaign recommendations.<h3 id="pricing">Pricing</h3>Optimizely Opal can be purchased through the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://console.cloud.google.com/marketplace/product/optimizely-public/optimizelyopal?hl=en&amp;pli=1&amp;project=main-aura-293403">Google Cloud Marketplace</a> via a Private Offer. That's cloud lexicon for contacting Optimizely’s sales to obtain a custom quote. Cloud marketplace listings can be somewhat nebulous at times (that's true of them all), particularly if the product isn't a direct SaaS or subscription model within your account. That said, the listing page does offer access to resources like tutorials and documentation to get things started. <h3 id="the-verdict">The verdict</h3>The hyperscalers have been a well for hydrating AI scalability, but Google in particular has been prolific with its Gemini foundation models (although recent outages aside, AWS Bedrock is making notable progress with its <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://aws.amazon.com/ai/generative-ai/nova/">Amazon Nova models</a>). Optimizely already runs on Gemini, so that’s clearly accelerating the innovation arc and gaming the efficiencies.Regardless of the AI wizardry under the hood, the real key here is marketers – and Opal is already delivering the kind of frictionless, low-code, drag-and-drop workflow capabilities that are helping them unlock the value of AI. This new integration is evolving that value, connecting Opal’s marketing intelligence with Gemini Enterprise’s network of agents and data sources to provide a unified view of the customer journey. From a tactical perspective, the coordination between the two systems is giving marketing teams the ability to build and run personalized campaigns with greater automation, allowing them to focus on other tasks with creative or strategic imperatives. This, of course, is the real promise of AI: reducing the cognitive load for marketers, who are struggling to manage a multitude of tools in an ever-increasing stack of complexity. There continues to be a lot of AI washing out there, but Optimizely’s roadmap still looks promising in the Opal department, particularly within the scope of its <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.optimizely.com/products/">Optimizely One</a> and CMP ecosystems. One of the smartest things they did to validate the use cases and outcomes with Opal was <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.optimizely.com/insights/the-2025-optimizely-opal-ai-benchmark-report/">publishing a Benchmark Report</a> that details how marketers are actually using it – and where it’s paying off. The dimensions of this new integration are certainly worth a look if you’re in the “All Agents, All the Time” mode. AI Made Everything Faster. It’s Time Your CMS Caught Up

<hr /> When I spoke to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/filipbech/">Filip Bech-Larsen</a> before Umbraco’s <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/sowing-the-seeds-of-love-umbracos-codegarden-2025-celebrates-20-years-of-community-and-innovation">2025 Codegarden event,</a> he was ecstatic about a lot of things. And rightly so. The open source content management system – which has long been dubbed<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://umbraco.com/about-us/values/why-the-friendly-cms/"> "The Friendly CMS”</a> – was on a roll. Along with a years-long stretch of remarkable growth and an expanding ecosystem of offerings, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/umbraco">Umbraco</a> was plotting an ambitious course in the evolving landscape of AI.Of course, as an open source vendor in a landscape of proprietary solutions, Filip reminded me why Umbraco’s approach to AI was markedly different from other commercial solutions.  “Our strategy is a little bit different to most of our competitors, and it basically comes down to Umbraco being a platform that you build on top of, instead of being the tool that does everything for you,” he explained. “Like the Lego bricks metaphor, we give you the base plate, and all the blocks, and then you build whatever you want on top of that. And since we're open source, we can't really take a commercial dependency and just integrate directly with ChatGPT because that's not how open source licensing works. So we have a few different tracks around this.”And the primary vehicle for accessing these tracks is the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://marketplace.umbraco.com/">Umbraco Marketplace,</a> which features a wide range of artificial intelligence plugins, from translators to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/tinymce-brings-advanced-ai-to-cms-text-editing-interview-with-fredrik-danielsson-elise-bentley">TinyMCE’s</a> premium package that includes a super handy accessibility checker. In fact, since Codegarden, MCP has exploded in adoption, with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/getting-started/intro">thousands of options</a> now available across a multitude of servers. Now, with MCP reaching a fever pitch and becoming a central part of the agentic horizon, Umbraco is doing what it has done over the past twenty years: looking to its open source community. There have already been sparks of AI innovation from across Umbraco’s 250,000 contributors and its international network of digital agency partners. His commitment to the community has earned him an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://community.umbraco.com/mvp-program/current-mvps/">Umbraco MVP</a> five times. “Being part of the Umbraco open-source community over the past fourteen years has made a huge difference to me professionally and personally,” he said. “I’m delighted to join a team of people whose work I have admired for many years.”“Phil Whittaker is a major contributor within our open-source community and is at the very heart of Umbraco MCP Server development,” said Filip Bech-Larsen. “We’re excited to be able to work alongside him at Umbraco HQ to support organizations as they learn how to harness the power of agentic AI, while retaining full control and transparency over its operation.”<h3 id="focused-on-mcp">Focused on MCP</h3>A quick reminder if you’re new to MCP: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/getting-started/intro">Model Context Protocol</a> is an open standard that enables large language models to connect and communicate with external tools, data sources, and other services. Think of it as a USB-C port for AI, providing a vehicle for LLMs to access and share information. This, in turn, enables the development of rich AI agents that can be enlisted to perform complex, real-world actions – and that runs the gamut from ecommerce transactions to wildly imaginative tasks.Despite all the fervor, the phenomenon of MCP is still pretty fresh. In fact, the standard was <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.anthropic.com/news/model-context-protocol">launched by Anthropic</a> in November of 2024 and made available as an open source framework. But it caught on quickly, and by spring of this year, the buzz around agentic commerce was palpable – and MCP was seen as a gateway for expanding the agent-to-agent vision.As Phil explained, he was already developing AI apps and harnessing AI for content generation and coding before ChatGPT was launched. This gave him more of a solid foundation as MCP came on the scene. “I started experimenting with Model Context Protocol at the start of this year and was hugely impressed by its potential when combined with a CMS,” he said. “This led me to the development of an MCP Server for Umbraco. It’s incredibly powerful, while providing strong control. We’ve built the right tool in the right way at exactly the right time. As a developer, you don’t come across anything this momentous more than once or twice in your career.”In September, Phil wrote about the beta release of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://umbraco.com/blog/announcing-the-beta-release-of-the-developer-mcp-server-for-umbraco-cms/">Developer MCP Server for Umbraco CMS,</a> which provides a pathway to AI-powered content management capabilities directly in the Umbraco CMS workflow. This was a milestone moment in the continued development of Umbraco’s MCP strategy, signaling his future role in shaping the continued trajectory. <h3 id="why-it-matters">Why it matters</h3>MCP is a clear game-changer as we move full throttle into the era of agentic AI. For CMS and DXP vendors, having an MCP server has become a strategic imperative, and Umbraco is taking a sage course by elevating an experienced AI pioneer from its own community to shape the next steps of its MCP evolution.Umbraco continues to enjoy a unique position within the CMS category as the most widely-used open source content management system built on .NET. The platform is trusted by well-established global enterprises like Rubbermaid, but is also a go-to for public sector organizations – reflecting its secure, scalable, and future-proof posture. Umbraco’s commitment to accessibility and sustainability is also a testament to its culture, and further reinforces the loyalty of its highly-engaged community of users and developers – clearly one of its strongest attributes. <hr /> AI is forcing everything to move at MACH speed. That includes the evolution of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/agency-powered-ai-wpp-and-mach-alliance-partner-to-help-brands-win-in-the-age-of-ai">MACH Alliance’s</a> political fabric. In early August, we <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/mach-alliance-aims-to-evolve-enterprise-ai-architecture-with-new-end-user-leadership-model">published a story</a> about the not-for-profit industry group’s efforts to shape the future of enterprise AI architecture by adopting an end-user leadership model – putting more practitioners in the driver’s seat.  I reflected on how the pressure of agentic AI was exerting market demand for guidance, and how this was abundantly clear in the noise level surrounding MCP (and more) at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/the-deep-dish-on-composable-6-tasty-takeaways-from-the-mach-alliances-2025-conference">“The Composable Conference”</a> earlier this year.With this strategic shift in leadership, the organization is hoping to accelerate AI-powered transformation across commerce enterprises by fostering a more collaborative environment – bolstered by leaders with experience and proven success from across the broader enterprise ecosystem.  At the same time, the Alliance’s president, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/the-future-is-composable-a-conversation-with-new-mach-alliance-president-casper-rasmussen">Casper Rasmussen,</a> had just announced his impending departure in September. The heat was on to find his successor, but that decision would be guided by this new end-user leadership mandate. This week, the MACH Alliance published the election results of its 2025 Executive Board, which has expanded to include additional end-user ambassadors, providing even more knowledge and guidance as AI reshapes global businesses.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasoncottrell/">Jason Cottrell,</a> founder and CEO of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://orium.com/">Orium</a>, has taken the reins as MACH Alliance president, effective September 30, 2025. Appointed by the MACH Alliance Executive Board, Cottrell will help ensure critical continuity as the Alliance undertakes an ambitious transformation from composable commerce stewardship to agentic ecosystem orchestration. <figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:23.62%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2025/10/image-1759347681727.png" /></figure>Jason Cottrell “I am honored to step into this role at such a pivotal moment for the MACH Alliance,” Cottrell said. “This election underscores our strength as a global community of innovators and brand leaders, co-creating the next horizon of composability. In the weeks ahead, we will share bold announcements that reinforce our MACH foundations while charting an ambitious next phase for the Alliance.”Cottrell will serve as president for a two-year term, joined by an appointed end-user co-president in September 2026. <h3 id="leading-with-end-user-experience">Leading with End-User Experience</h3>Cottrell’s proven experience in creating market-leading solutions – and his deep understanding of both the technical foundations of MACH and the emerging agentic landscape – make him uniquely qualified to lead the Alliance through this period of transformation. Cottrell’s track record at Orium speaks for itself. A pioneering founder and driven visionary, he has been at the forefront of building composable, interoperable commerce solutions that help enterprise brands move faster, respond quickly, and stay ahead of market competition.Orium claims to have launched more composable solutions than any digital firm in North America, leaning on its cumulative expertise in commerce architecture. The agency has worked closely with leading technology providers to deliver scalable solutions that accelerate time to value. This includes the application of AI-powered and agentic technologies. “The next wave of digital experiences won’t just serve users, they’ll work alongside them,” he said. “We’re building systems that enable our clients to lead that shift toward more intelligent, collaborative interactions.”<h3 id="a-new-board-for-a-new-era">A New Board for a New Era</h3>While Cottrell is uniquely positioned to guide the Alliance through its transformation, he won’t be doing it alone. She has been a fixture in the MACH community for years and an outspoken champion for the composable movement. I also spoke with Curtis at “The Composable Conference” back in April, where the intensity around agentic AI was undeniable. While many of the organizations at the event were in attendance to support their own composable transformation, it was clear that agentic AI – and more specifically, agentic commerce – was taking up all the air in the room. As the driver behind easyJet’s e-commerce machine, Curtis is working at the edge in a highly competitive digital market, one where speed, flexibility, and multi-channel capabilities are key to success. From an end-user practitioner’s perspective, his voice and experience will be instrumental in shaping the future of the Alliance’s AI roadmap.“Agentic AI is rewriting the rules of enterprise technology,” he said. “The MACH Alliance has a pivotal role in making it relevant and bringing it to life – something I’m very excited to be a part of.”Finally, six seats from the organization’s membership were elected or reelected to the Executive Board. It’s already taking proactive steps by investing in programs like the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/mach-alliance-launches-new-mach-ai-exchange-to-help-enterprises-streamline-ai-adoption">MACH AI Exchange.</a> But supporting the frontier of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/an-alliance-for-ai-to-unlock-trusted-agent-to-agent-ecosystems-the-mach-alliance-is-evolving">agent-to-agent ecosystem</a> requires an even stronger path forward.While the organization is repositioning its focus on agentic ecosystem orchestration, it continues to be steadfast in its architectural foundation around composability. This is critical, as enterprises that have embraced MACH are accelerating their AI transformation in profound ways. This further underscores the value and impact of the Alliance’s work, and we can expect more messaging that supports these fundamentals. With deep expertise in composable architecture, AI transformation, and enterprise modernization, the Alliance’s new Executive Board is bringing the right mix of technical leadership and innovative thinking to advance the MACH Alliance’s vision. There's still a strong contingent of composable vendors represented, but the rebalancing with seasoned end-user practitioners should bring fresh perspectives to the roadmap.Under Cottrell’s leadership, the new board has a unique opportunity to leverage the Alliance’s industry clout and recognition to shine a light on the challenges ahead, as well as the architectural principles and philosophical thinking required to navigate the ever-changing landscape of agentic AI. As with MACH, unlocking the full benefits of the agent-to-agent ecosystem will require more than technology – it will necessitate the right mindset.It's worth noting that I recently spoke to Casper Rasmussen about his departure as president, and we discussed some of his big takeaways from his MACH leadership experience. From the beginning, he's had a significant impact on the organization’s trajectory and growth – becoming an undeniable force in the modern composable ethos.
