BuddyPress 4.2.0 is now available. This is a security and maintenance release. All BuddyPress installations are strongly encouraged to upgrade as soon as possible.
The 4.2.0 release addresses two security issues:
<ul>
<li>A cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability was fixed that could allow users to send malicious code in the content of private messages. Discovered and reported independently by <a href="http://www.klmunday.com/">Kieran Munday</a> and <a href="https://security-consulting.icu/">Tim Coen</a>.</li>
<li>A privilege escalation vulnerability was fixed that could allow users to reply to unauthorized private message threads. Discovered by <a href="http://www.klmunday.com/">Kieran Munday.</a></li>
</ul>
These vulnerabilities were reported privately to the BuddyPress team, in accordance with <a href="https://make.wordpress.org/core/handbook/testing/reporting-security-vulnerabilities/">WordPress’s security policies</a>. Our thanks to the reporters for practicing coordinated disclosure.

BuddyPress 4.2.0 Maintenance and Security Release

<a href="https://buddypress.org" target="_blank">BuddyPress</a>, the popular WordPress social network and community building plugin, has just released its latest version.
Following its tradition of naming versions after their favourite restaurants, BuddyPress 2.3.0 has been titled after “Chez Livio”, an Italian Pizza specialist in Paris, France.
Version 2.3.0 comes bundled with a number of noteworthy features.
<h2>New Avatar UI, Better Blog Media Handling &amp; More</h2>
First up, BuddyPress users now have better control over avatars, thanks to a new interface.

The interface allows users to drag-and-drop upload and then quickly crop their desired image.
Users who have a webcam enables, or users who are using their smartphones will also be able to take a photo directly from the interface using the “Take Photo” tab.
BuddyPress 2.3.0 is the best looking version yet, thanks to companion stylesheets for bundles WordPress themes like Twenty Fifteen.

Also, blog media, such as images and video, will now show up in activity feeds as part of the excerpt when blog posts are published.
Further features include member-type specific directories and private message starring for better inbox organization.

BuddyPress 2.3.0 “Livio” Released

The latest version of BuddyPress, the popular WordPress social network and community building plugin, has been released.
WordPress names its updates after Jazz musicians, but BuddyPress has the honour of having its updates named after eateries located in the New York vicinity. “Spumoni” then, is actually short for <a href="http://www.spumonigardens.com/">L&amp;B Spumoni Gardens</a>, a pizzeria located in Brooklyn.
BuddyPress 2.2 brings about a number of enhancements to the previous version, <a href="/buddypress-2.1-patsy-released/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">BuddyPress 2.1 “Patsy”</a>. From what can be seen from the feature highlights though, it seems BuddyPress 2.2 is geared more towards the developers behind BuddyPress-powered communities, rather than the average user.
Here are those highlights.
<ul>
<li><a href="https://codex.buddypress.org/developer/member-types/">Member types</a> will allow developers to register different types of users.</li>
<li><a href="https://codex.buddypress.org/plugindev/post-types-activities/">Post type activities</a> will allow developers to connect custom post types to activity stream items.</li>
<li>Improvements to the Legacy template pack.</li>
<li>Several new query API’s (based on WordPress improvements) for retrieving exactly the results you’re looking for.</li>
<li>Continued cache enhancements, particularly for multi-site and multi-network WordPress configurations.</li>
<li>Improved Group invitations UI.</li>
<li>Tons of under-the-hood improvements.</li>
<li>Increased coverage of inline code documentation, actions, &amp; filters.</li>
</ul>

BuddyPress 2.2 "Spumoni" Released

The final version of <a href="http://buddypress.org/2014/09/buddypress-2-1-patsy/" target="_blank">BuddyPress 2.1 has been unveiled</a>, just days after the Release Candidate went live.
Following the same trend as WordPress, BuddyPress also name their major releases. However, instead of famous musicians, they opt for eateries. BuddyPress 2.1, therefore, has been named after  <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patsy's_Pizzeria"> Patsy’s</a>, a classic pizzeria in East Harlem, NYC.
As mentioned in my <a href="/buddypress-2.1-release-candidate-now-available/" target="_blank">previous look at BuddyPress 2.1</a>, this new release brings about a new @mentions interface, better translations and much more. So, let's take a closer look at Patsy.
<h2>More Translatable, More @able</h2>

Previously, you needed to know the username of the member you wanted to mention in the activity stream, but not anymore. In BuddyPress 2.1, typing the  <code> @ </code>  key will bring up the new suggestions panel, making it easy to @ the user you intend, by simply choosing them from a list.
Also, the BuddyPress team have worked alongside the WordPress team to get BuddyPress translation files downloading automatically to your WordPress installation. So, BuddyPress is now more translatable – and more readily translated – than ever before.
Another addition is the new URL field type, which allows your users to enter URLs in a number of formats, and ensures that they’re properly linked when displayed on member profiles.
<h2>Something for the Devs</h2>
BuddyPress 2.1 introduces dozens of improvements with developers in mind:
<ul>
<li>Access control in  <code> BP_Group_Extension </code>  has been completely overhauled, allowing plugins to manage access to their nav items on a fine-grained basis.</li>
<li>A new  <code> group_activity </code>  sort order has been added for Groups queries.</li>
<li>A  <code> no_access_url </code>  parameter has been added to  <code> bp_core_new_subnav_item() </code> . This allows you to set the URL that users are redirected to when they do not have permission to access a sub-navigation item.</li>
<li>Extra CSS classes have been added to Profile Field visibility field elements, allowing greater CSS customization.</li>
</ul>

BuddyPress 2.1 Patsy Released

BuddyPress are now edging closer to the release of version 2.1, <a href="http://buddypress.org/2014/09/buddypress-2-1-release-candidate/" target="_blank">making the release candidate available</a> for the first (and last) time.
Built by the guys behind WordPress, BuddyPress allows you to create a fully featured social network inside your WordPress.org powered site.
This release candidate means that the final release of BuddyPress 2.1 should be announced any day now. So, now would be a good time to talk about what's new.

<h2>New @mentions, Better Security &amp; Tons of Tweaks</h2>
We'll know more about BuddyPress 2.1 once it actually arrived, but for now, here's what we know is in the box:

<li>@mentions: Type an “@” when leaving a status update or commenting on an activity item or blog post, and the new suggestions panel will open.</li>
<li>Password Upgrade: Set more secure passwords with the password strength meter on the registration and user settings pages</li>
<li>New Field Type: New “URL” XProfile field type</li>
<li>Performance: Continued performance enhancements, particularly on the Members and Groups directories.</li>
<li>Translations: Higher quality translations (automatically fetched by WordPress), courtesy of our translation volunteers; thanks!</li>
<li>Tweaks: Tons of under-the-hood tweaks</li>
</ul>

BuddyPress 2.1 Release Candidate Now Available

Yesterday, <a href="http://buddypress.org/" target="_blank"> BuddyPress</a> released their latest version – BuddyPress 2.0 Juliana.
BuddyPress is a powerful WordPress plugin that transforms WordPress.org powered websites into social networks, with features like user profiles, activity streams, user groups, and more.
In keeping with WordPress's knack of naming major updates, BuddyPress 2.0 Juliana was named after <a href="http://julianaspizza.com/" target="_blank"> Juliana's Pizza</a> in Brooklyn, New York. The Pizza establishment is frequented by two core members of the BuddyPress team.
So, let's take a look at what Juliana brings to the table.
<h2>A Range of New Administrative Tools</h2>
BuddyPress 2.0 brings about a number of new tools that simplify and centralize common administrative tasks, including:
<h3>Profile editing</h3>

Need to manage a user’s profile information? We’ve integrated a new “Extended Profile” tab into the Dashboard &gt; Users interface, where you can manage profile data, avatars, user status, and more.
<h3>Spam User Management</h3>

 WordPress Multisite has long had the ability to manage spam users from the Dashboard. We’ve brought the same capabilities to non-Multisite installations.
<h3>Pending Users</h3>

The Pending users tab in Dashboard &gt; Users lets you see a list of signups that have not yet been activated. You can also perform useful tasks like manual account activation and resending activation emails.
<h3>Repair Tools</h3>

Occasionally, BuddyPress friend counts and other data can get out of sync. The new Tools screen lets admins manually reset these values.
<h2>Improved Performance &amp; Activity Stream Enhancements</h2>
BuddyPress 2.0 Juliana also comes served with an impressive performance boost.
For example, the BuddyPress team have worked to streamline some of the most common problematic queries – such as those in the Members and Activity directories – to shave up to 95% of the query time off of certain individual queries.
The sheer number of queries has been dramatically reduced as well, so that single page views access the database up to 50% less than in BuddyPress 1.9. And we’ve totally overhauled the way that BuddyPress utilizes advanced caching systems like APC and Memcached, so that users of these systems will see up to 75% fewer cache misses on costly queries.
BuddyPress 2.0's third primary enhancement comes in the form of an updated Activity Stream.
First of all, BuddyPress 2.0 now automatically lets you know when new activity is ready to be loaded.

BuddyPress' activity stream is better integrated with blog posts now too. Comment on a blog post, and an activity item is posted. Comment on a blog-related activity item, and a blog comment is posted. No more worrying about fractured conversations.
Phrases like “Boone posted an update” have also been reworked, so that they’re always up-to-date and always translatable.

BuddyPress 2.0 “Juliana” Serves up New Administrative Tools & Performance Enhancements

BuddyPress 1.2.9 has been released and includes fixes related to the new version of jQuery (1.6.1) that comes packaged with WordPress 3.2. These changes affect the javascript and ajax behaviors in the bp-default theme. You can read more about them on the WordPress development blog. If your BuddyPress site runs bp-default (or a child theme of it) you’ll need to update to BuddyPress 1.2.9 immediately after updating to WordPress 3.2.
