<a href="http://www.hyland.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hyland</a> isn't giving up any ground in the battle for content services domination. And they shouldn't – not when the competition includes <a href="https://www.hyland.com/en/explore/gartner-magic-quadrant-for-content-services-platforms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Microsoft, Box, and OpenText</a>. 
To that end, Hyland just <a href="https://news.hyland.com/hyland-releases-latest-content-services-and-intelligent-automation-product-enhancements/">announced</a> some new and noteworthy product functionality, service enhancements, and industry-focused solutions to support organizations along their digital transformation and technology modernization journeys.
Hyland has been recognized by Gartner as a content services industry leader for 12 consecutive years, and the winner of our own <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/introducing-the-winners-of-the-2021-cms-critics-choice-awards/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Critic's Choice Awards</a> for ECM in 2021. Along with its continued investment in innovation, the company has made several keen acquisitions over the past two years, giving it extra leverage to compete with the aforementioned "big guns." 
A few examples: in 2020, <a href="https://news.hyland.com/hyland-acquires-rpa-software-provider-another-monday/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hyland acquired Another Monday</a>, the robotic process automation (RPA) software, <a href="https://news.hyland.com/hyland-completes-acquisition-of-streamline-healths-ecm-business/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Streamline Health ECM,</a> and <a href="https://news.hyland.com/hyland-acquires-blockchain-credentialing-provider-learning-machine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Learning Machine</a> – a company that develops and markets blockchain-secured digital credentialing solutions. Other acquisitions include OneContent, Perceptive (which became one of their flagship products), and <a href="https://www.hyland.com/en/company/acquisitions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">many more</a>. 
Then, like several other CMS and DXP platforms, Hyland eliminated one of its closest competitors by acquiring <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/hyland-acquires-alfresco-focuses-on-cloud-and-global-expansion-of-enterprise-cms/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alfresco</a>. The company then went on to <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/hyland-enters-agreement-to-acquire-nuxeo/">purchase Nuxeo</a>, a content services and digital asset management (DAM) platform, giving Hyland a powerful edge with its completeness of vision. 
But buying your way to the top can only get you so far – and Hyland seems more focused than ever on improving its products and services and enhancing customer experience.

Here are a few highlights of the new product features:
<h2>Upgrades to content services from Alfresco</h2>
Hyland has developed several new tools on the Alfresco platform – an investment that appears to be paying off. New improvements aim to simplify the management of cloud deployments, provide more intuitive user experiences, support more complex business processes, and deliver deeper integrations with line-of-business applications. 
Hyland also extended the Alfresco Enterprise Search capabilities with Elasticsearch, including enhanced query and proximity search support. 
<h2>Improvements to intelligent automation with Hyland RPA</h2>
Hyland has been making strides with its <a href="https://www.cio.com/article/227908/what-is-rpa-robotic-process-automation-explained.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">robotic process automation</a> features. Several updates were made to the <a href="https://www.hyland.com/en/platform/product-suite/robotic-process-automation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hyland RPA</a> to provide organizations with simplified bot deployment, more visibility over automated tasks, secure and convenient integrations, and improved user experience. 
The latest product version allows organizations to coordinate end-to-end automation with the newly developed Web Manager, providing improved security, user management, and updated reporting insights. Finally, the updated Designer allows flexible, secure integration with third-party applications/services and facilitates scaling automation enterprise-wide.
<h2>New Hyland Healthcare capabilities</h2>
<a href="http://www.hyland.com/Healthcare" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hyland Healthcare's</a> latest solution, the Hyland Clinician Window, unlocks physician access to more than 75% of patient information that does not typically reside in the electronic medical record (EMR). It helps physicians make informed care decisions to improve patient outcomes by delivering access to medical images, EKGs, consult notes, and other unstructured patient data within the EMR workflow. 
<h2>Updates to Hyland Experience Capture</h2>
New functionality within Hyland's cloud-native capture product, <a href="https://www.hyland.com/en/platform/product-suite/HxC" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hyland Experience Capture</a> (HxC), delivers automatic separation by barcode for automated document splitting of 1D and 2D barcodes. This eliminates the need for manual separation, improving employee experience by rededicating workers to higher-value tasks.

Since 2012, the CMS Critic Awards have been something of an institution. Not only do they give our panel of thought leaders an opportunity to "chime in" on the general direction of the industry, but they also give individuals a chance to vote for their favorite platform. It's a fun way to engage with our communities and create more visibility around the importance of this technology sector.

Nuxeo offers a cloud-native, open-source, low-code platform with content services and DAM capabilities, among others.

Hyland has been a consistent force in the ECM and content services landscape, commanding the second-place position in the Leader Quadrant of <a href="https://www.hyland.com/en/explore/gartner-magic-quadrant-for-content-services-platforms">Gartner’s 2020 Magic Quadrant for Content Services Platforms</a>.
While Hyland has been trailing right behind <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/blog/2020/12/08/over-200-million-users-rely-on-sharepoint-as-microsoft-is-again-recognized-as-a-leader-in-the-2020-gartner-content-services-platforms-magic-quadrant-report/#:~:text=Leading%20in%20the%20Gartner%20Content,Platforms%20Magic%20Quadrant%20for%202020.">Microsoft’s 365 platform</a> (fueled primarily by <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/sharepoint/collaboration">Sharepoint</a>), they were also being followed closely by <a href="https://www.alfresco.com/">Alfresco</a>, a fast-growing open-source content services platform that was gaining ground in the market but still viewed as a somewhat niche solution by large enterprises.
Following suit with many other CMS and DXP platforms in the last year, Hyland <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/hyland-acquires-alfresco-focuses-on-cloud-and-global-expansion-of-enterprise-cms/">acquired Alfresco</a> in 2020, eliminating their next closest competitor and changing the game in the leadership grid.
While buying a competitor is far from novel, Alfresco’s low-code tools – combined with its ability to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) services from <a href="https://www.alfresco.com/ecm-software/aws">cloud providers like AWS</a> – were likely key factors in Hyland's decision, enabling them to accelerate their modernization efforts.
<h3>Adding Nuxeo's low-code AI service and DAM capabilities</h3>
With the Nuxeo acquisition, Hyland is consuming another competitor – this time from the Visionary quadrant of Gartner's MQ for Content Services Platforms.
Nuxeo brings some unique assets to Hyland that may translate into significant advantages against Microsoft and Sharepoint. First, it gains <a href="https://www.nuxeo.com/content-services-platform/ai/">Nuxeo Insight</a> – an AI offering that enables customers to use their own data and content to train custom ML models for a variety of business applications. This includes enriching content with metadata, classifying people, products and records, automating forms processing, and more.
The critical advantage with Nuxeo Insight is that it generates ML models that are trained with a customer’s own data – rendering them far more accurate and insightful than typical AI services offered through public clouds (like AWS).
Nuxeo is also known for its strong enterprise <a href="https://www.nuxeo.com/solutions/dam-digital-asset-management/">DAM capabilities</a>, which provide out-of-the-box solutions for enterprises. Additionally, its large-scale repository – which includes NoSQL and distributed file system options – provides storage and scalability support for organizations with a large number of documents.
In fact, last year, Nuxeo proved its scalability performance with an <a href="https://benchmarks.nuxeo.com/11-billion-benchmark-story/">11-billion-object benchmark test</a> on AWS.
<h3>What does the Nuxeo acquisition mean for Hyland?</h3>
Considering some of Hyland’s core industry verticals – specifically finance – Nuxeo may be well worth the investment. Along with its cloud-native, low-code solutions, Nuxeo's open source community and AI-driven capabilities address key gaps in Hyland's modernization strategy, and will likely be a source of continued product innovation.
The transaction is expected to close in April 2021. Until that time, both companies will continue to operate as two companies. Upon transaction close, Nuxeo's business will be integrated into Hyland.

Hyland Enters Agreement to Acquire Nuxeo

Nuxeo, the provider of a content management platform for business applications, today announced the availability of Nuxeo Platform 5.8, a major Long Term Support version of the open-source content management platform. With advances in workflow, content synchronization, and REST APIs, this version is a major step forward for developers and product managers who build content-centric applications to manage business information.
An accumulation of three previously released 5.7.x Fast Track versions, this new version contains a host of new features and enhancements for developers, administrators, and end-users that have already been fully vetted by early adopters in the Nuxeo community. Nuxeo Platform 5.8 includes a new set of resource-oriented endpoints for the REST API, adaptive capabilities for the integrated workflow engine, improved processing and navigation of digital assets, and Nuxeo Drive, a desktop synchronization client for the Nuxeo content repository.
In addition, this version benefits from the initial groundwork for nuxeo.io, the upcoming PaaS offering, with expanded REST API endpoints and increased flexibility for quickly building web applications.

Nuxeo Releases a Major Version of the Nuxeo Platform

Day’s new CRX 2.1 release promotes rapid development, deployment and scalable hosting of composite content applications in either a public or private Cloud. Based on an open source core comprised of the Apache Jackrabbit, Felix and Sling projects, CRX 2.1 provides a core Java Content Repository (JCR) with OSGI-based application integration and RESTful web application development.
With a modern, open, standards-based architecture, CRX 2.1 enables IT to virtualize disparate content repositories and application services and consolidate development and hosting of mission-critical Web applications on a single unified platform for increased productivity and compliance. Open Standards
CRX 2.1 adds support for both the JSR-283 and CMIS standards. JSR-283 support follows the December ratification of this successor standard to JSR-170, capping a multi-year effort led by CTO David Nuescheler in the Java Community Process (JCP) and Apache Jackrabbit project. Along with support for JCR 2.0, CRX 2.1 also adds support for the upcoming CMIS standard, which is scheduled for final voting and ratification 30 April 2010. CRX’s support for CMIS follows nearly one year after Day’s announcement of the Apache Chemistry project to provide a common, vendor-neutral reference implementation of the CMIS standard to promote development and adoption of the new standard. With major vendors like SAP and OpenText part of the Apache Chemistry project, CRX 2.1 provides standardized support for CMIS in addition to support for JCR.
Virtualization and IT Consolidation
Day extends CRX’s virtual repository to extend a JSR-283 and CMIS interface to leading enterprise content management repositories, including Microsoft SharePoint. Leveraging CRX 2.1, organizations can now federate any number of Microsoft SharePoint servers to provide a consolidated platform for composite content application development leveraging industry-standards.
Rapid Composite Content Application Development
CRX 2.1 introduces new tools for developer productivity. For web developers, CRX 2.1 introduces a new browser-based development environment, CRXDE Lite, that offers code-editing, packaging and deployment support for composite content applications, along with integration with leading source code management (SCM) systems like Subversion. For developers building and testing new CRX-based content applications in the Cloud, CRXDE Lite’s browser-based experience simplifies the development process and provides a fun-to-use developer experience.
On-Demand Scalability with the Cloud
CRX 2.1 adds new support for elastic storage capability with native support for Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3. Leveraging S3, enterprise customers can scale their Amazon-hosted content repositories on-demand. CRX 2.1 also now pioneers a new hybrid Cloud deployment model, enabling enterprise customers deploying on-premises software to rapidly add new CRX servers in the Cloud on-demand to accommodate increased site or application loads. With CRX 2.1, these new instances can be “hot-joined” to a running on-premises cluster with zero downtime, enabling organizations to build virtual clusters across both on-premises and off-premises servers to best leverage elastic scalability through the Cloud.
Cloud-hosted PackageShare Service
In addition to its native Cloud support, Day also introduces with CRX 2.1 its first Cloud-hosted service, PackageShare. PackageShare is Day’s online service for enabling CRX developers worldwide to package and share composite content applications, providing a global catalog of pre-built solutions and components. CRX developers can browse PackageShare directly from their CRX development environment, download, install and subscribe to updates for packages shared by other developers in the CRX community. CRX developers can easily post new packages to PackageShare, view community feedback and ratings on posted packages, and easily find new, useful packages leveraging integrated search and pre-set filters.

<a href="http://www.knowledgetree.com/products/whats-new">KnowledgeTree 3.7</a>, deployed on Zend Server, features improved performance – tests indicate KnowledgeTree runs up to 40 percent faster through the inclusion of Zend Optimizer. It also introduces the first iteration of KnowledgeTree’s new Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) interface, which is compliant with the 0.61 draft of the specification.
By using Web services and Web 2.0 interfaces to enable rich information to be shared across Internet protocols, CMIS enables greater interoperability among ECM systems.

Significant features and enhancements of the 3.7 release include:

<li>Server-based, MSI, RPM and DEB installer packages: 
These allow easy installation and maintenance of the stack using standard package management technologies on Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems.</li>
<li>Setup Wizard: The wizard automates installation, configuration and upgrades, making it easy for both non-technical and experienced administrators, and completely removing the need for command line interaction.</li>
</ul>
Also featured in this release are updates to the Microsoft Office Add-in, which integrates KnowledgeTree seamlessly with Microsoft Office 2007. KnowledgeTree has added a date field, a rich-text field, and the ability to select multiple items to the document properties feature.
Finally, an OpenSearch interface enables users to share search results generated within KnowledgeTree with other applications and helps search engines and users communicate requests and syndicate results.
KnowledgeTree Explorer CP is a cross-platform version of the popular desktop tool that allows drag and drop functionality to the repository. With cross-platform capabilities, users can enjoy this feature from Linux and Mac desktops. An alpha period for KnowledgeTree Explorer CP will give customers the opportunity to test and comment on the offering.

ECM Provider KnowledgeTree® Releases Version 3.7 of Its Document Management Software

KnowledgeTree®, an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) provider focusing on affordable document management software that is easily installed and used by business professionals, today announced the release of a developer snapshot of its product that includes an implementation of the draft Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) specification.
This snapshot is available for testing in the community. CMIS clients, such as CMIS Spaces, will work with the KnowledgeTree CMIS interface and allow users to access content as they would with any other CMIS interface implementation.
The CMIS initiative is led by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), which drives the development, convergence and adoption of open standards for the global information society. OASIS open standards offer the potential to lower cost, stimulate innovation, grow global markets and protect the right of free choice of technology. KnowledgeTree is a sponsoring member of OASIS.
“KnowledgeTree is being proactive in adopting and integrating CMIS into our product suite,” said Philip Arkcoll, product manager, KnowledgeTree. “This will allow users of ECM products to extend their software investments by gaining visibility into all enterprise document repositories that have a CMIS interface as well as realize benefits such as reduced vendor lock-in, improved interoperability between content management systems, and a richer content management ecosystem.”
