<hr /> I got the Salesforce Blues… Even Slack can't pick me up… I got the Salesforce Blues… Is Informatica outta luck?Oh, <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/salesforce">Salesforce</a>. Even legendary blues disciple <a target="_blank" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Johnson">Robert Johnson</a> couldn’t pen a sadder tune about these troubled waters. What did you ever do to deserve this reaction?Before we discuss any “deals with the devil” or take riders to Rosedale, let’s review what we know (and don’t know). Things started brewing last Friday when the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/salesforce-in-advanced-talks-to-buy-informatica-ba9ec09c?mod=tech_lead_pos3">Wall Street Journal</a> first reported that the CRM giant was in early talks to buy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.informatica.com/">Informatica</a>, a leader in the data management software space. For context: Informatica’s tools provide advanced data quality and integration capabilities, helping businesses enhance the value of their data for business, IT, marketing, and commerce applications. This includes stuff like APIs, cloud modernization, Customer 360 solutions, and a whole lot more.On Monday, when word hit the street, <a target="_blank" href="https://qz.com/salesforce-informatica-deal-11-billion-1851411069">Salesforce stock tumbled 7.3%</a>. Informatica, likewise, was off by 6.5%. Salesforce recovered a bit today, but the axe fell deep – and swiftly. But it's too early to draw conclusions. It's no secret that Salesforce has been expanding and diversifying its ecosystem. When I reflected last week on <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/is-google-adding-the-letters-crm-to-its-alphabet-soup-ask-hubspot">Google’s dalliance with buying HubSpot</a>, I also noted how Salesforce is entangled in the gravitational influence of the leading cloud providers – where <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/aws">AWS</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/microsoft-azure">Microsoft</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/google-cloud-platform">GCP</a> present a celestial three-body problem.Over the years, Salesforce has evolved CRM through its own sales lens, adding tools like marketing automation, commerce, CMS, analytics, and a whole host of technologies that make its cloud more attractive and “sticky” to enterprises. Central to it all is data, the currency of business, and an area that’s being threatened by the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/forrester/2024/01/16/google-commits-to-third-party-cookies-deprecation-in-2024/?sh=a8d8e14245af">deprecation of cookies</a> and an evolving consumer privacy landscape. When it comes to an acquisition of this scale (at $38.48 a share, the Informatica price tag would be in the billions) there are a lot of underlying forces at play. But what presumably makes this worth all the “B’s” to Salesforce is the exploding value of AI. This is why the hunt for platforms like Informatica could be key to accelerating the injection of AI-powered capabilities into the mix. Both Salesforce and Informatica have been charging up their existing products with artificial intelligence for quite some time but really ramping up since the introduction of <a target="_blank" href="https://openai.com/">Open AI</a> and LLMs. Earlier this year, Salesforce released <a target="_blank" href="https://www.salesforce.com/news/press-releases/2024/02/27/einstein-copilot-news/">Einstein Copilot</a>, a generative conversational AI assistant for its CRM that delivers more trusted responses trained on your company’s data. Around this time last year, Informatica also released its AI-powered <a target="_blank" href="https://www.informatica.com/about-us/news/news-releases/2023/05/20230509-informatica-expands-its-intelligent-data-management-cloud-with-innovations-led-by-claire-gpt-industrys-first-generative-ai-powered-data-management-platform.html">Intelligent Data Management Cloud</a>, which included its novel <a target="_blank" href="https://www.informatica.com/about-us/claire.html">CLAIRE GPT</a> – providing the industry’s first generative AI solution within a data management platform. And so here we are, waiting to see if Salesforce starts Travis-picking with another big gamble. The talks are merely at the advanced stage, but they could represent a major move for both companies and send ripples across the CRM and cloud landscape.  <h3 id="so-why-are-investors-singin’-the-blues?-">So why are investors singin’ the blues? </h3>Play it again, Sam…It’s a song as old as time, because Salesforce has been around forever – and given its track record with its most recent acquisitions, it’s clear that the street is feeling a bit uneasy about another big-ticket purchase that doesn’t pay off in big dividends. Just to jog your memory: when Salesforce touted its breathtaking $28 billion acquisition of Slack in 2020, CEO Mark Benioff proclaimed it was a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/how-slacks-marriage-to-salesforce-crumbled">“match made in heaven.”</a> It didn’t take long for things to sour – from a visible rift between Benioff and Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield, to real skepticism that sales could be increased by bundling and integrating Slack with other products.To be clear, there are multiple Slack integrations with Salesforce, from basic connectors for admins to Service Cloud and Tableau. You can also build custom notifications, which is pretty handy. OK, so it works. But by all measures, it hasn’t been a windfall. And paying 26 times Slack’s future revenue was just one painful reality playing out over the last two years. The other was fighting the <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/is-google-adding-the-letters-crm-to-its-alphabet-soup-ask-hubspot">growing “Cloud War” with Microsoft</a>, its former rival for Slack and persona non grata around Salesforce HQ. As competition betwixt Dynamics 365 and other downstream systems ensued, Salesforce was feeling pressure to innovate, scale, and make up ground for a colossal misstep. And things are getting precarious from an accountability perspective. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/salesforce-is-advanced-talks-buy-informatica-wsj-reports-2024-04-13/">According to Reuters</a>, Salesforce has been under the gun since early last year, when a pod of activist investors – including ValueAct Capital and Elliott Management – started raising flags around the company’s strategy. This included a quest for changes in management, but it might also be the fire that lit leadership into action around the company's next strategic venture.Buying Informatica at the proposed price will make this the biggest acquisition for Salesforce since the Slack debacle. Not to say that all previous purchases have missed the mark. <a target="_blank" href="https://qz.com/salesforce-informatica-deal-11-billion-1851411069">According to Quartz</a>, Salesforce has purchased over 70 companies since 2006. Some of those must have turned out to be winners, right? Right?Well, that’s exactly what investors are weighing. Even though 2023 was a year of austerity for the CRM king’s unabated “expansion by acquisition,” some major purchases prior to Slack are still rattling the market’s rib cage. In 2019, it went hog-wild with Tableau – spending <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-05/salesforce-crm-guts-tableau-after-spending-15-7-billion-in-2019-deal">$15.7 billion</a> for the analytics visualization platform. A year earlier, it dropped <a target="_blank" href="https://groovetechnology.com/blog/why-did-salesforce-acquire-mulesoft/">$6.5 billion</a> for Mulesoft – arguably the leading API development and integration platform. On the surface, these purchases seemed to serve ostensibly ambitious goals: Salesforce wanted to enrich customer data and expand its marketplace with API-powered interoperability. But just as with Slack, Salesforce gutted both platforms after the deals were closed, laying off sizeable portions of their respective teams. With Tableau, a major reorg last year signaled that the acquisition might not be living up to its expectations. Maybe not the best way to handle your multi-billion-dollar purchases. But that’s another song on the record. <h3 id="why-it-matters">Why it matters</h3>As the tale goes, Robert Johnson <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rockhall.com/inductees/robert-johnson#:~:text=Legend%20has%20it%20that%20Robert,the%20first%20ever%20rock%20star.">sold his soul</a> to the devil at a crossroads in Cleveland, Mississippi in exchange for a mastery of the guitar. Regardless of what you believe, his talent was unrivaled at the time – and he might have been the first rock star ever. Like the blues legend, Salesforce was unquestionably the first rock star of CRM. Sure, it was flanked by contemporary pioneers like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.goldmine.com/">Goldmine</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.maximizer.com/">Maximizer</a>, but it was Mark Benioff’s vision of “The End of Software” that really blew people’s minds and established a revolutionary foothold for the category. And it was rock 'n roll all the way to the top.It’s true what they say: some stars burn bright and fade into obscurity. That’s not the case here, but market-leading entities like Salesforce do lose their luster as innovators and disruptors when the accouterments of success begin to weigh things down. There’s no doubt that Salesforce has made some, shall we say, miscalculations when feeding its voracious M&amp;A appetite. That might seem obvious on the frontend relative to the inflated price tag for Slack. But the real misstep is the mismanagement of the potential. Reorgs and layoffs aside, it seems that no one had a real plan for what to do after it won the race.Still, Salesforce got to its Gleaming Tower on the Bay because it has continued to nurture its core business – and I’m certain it has a few more tricks up its sleeve. Case in point: aligning with AWS to build a beachhead against Microsoft via its Marketplace. The Informatica acquisition could also be more tacitly aligned with Salesforce, building on market longevity and proven enterprise relationships. Like Salesforce, Informatica’s no spring chicken – it was founded in 1993, six years before Benioff left Oracle to build his new kingdom.Also on the plus side: it looks like a good buy from a revenue and market share perspective. Informatica’s stock has been performing well since the launch of its AI features, up 43% this year. With 5,000 active customers and 6,000 employees, it could present a more profitable catch – as long as the multipliers hold steady.At the end of the day, the cloud plays big in any decision, for reasons already mentioned (vis-à-vis the "Cloud Wars”). The next big hurdle in cloud adoption and management is optimization, fueled by actionable data insights. If Salesforce can complement its core services with greater access to data innovation and cloud modernization services – coupled with even greater API integration and data quality capabilities – it might have a real winner on its hands.And of course, there’s AI. Informatica’s CLAIRE GPT leverages unified metadata intelligence to enhance data discovery up to 100x faster and unlock new levels of productivity. Automation is becoming increasingly important as brands amass huge amounts of data across billions of transactions and data integration jobs. This is work humans can’t do – and its CRM ecosystem could certainly benefit from. After a long drought of M&amp;A activity, 2024 is looking to be a year of potentially epic dealmaking. This move by Salesforce is a clear signal that sentiment is improving. That said, Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan <a target="_blank" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/jpmorgan-ceo-dimon-says-market-181040250.html">maintains caution</a> as the outlook is compounded by a confluence of outside factors – namely a Presidential election in the U.S. and continued global conflicts that could impact supply chains. In other words, we just don’t know. It’s hard to weigh in fully on speculation, but with so much percolating across the tech sector, it’s important to keep our eyes on what’s really happening. Salesforce is a critical part of almost every enterprise stack, and a key one for CMS and DXP platforms (heck, Salesforce has shown up as a DXP for Gartner). But what does a prolonged Covid pandemic mean for the content and digital experience sector?

This was evidenced by <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/28/contenful-raises-175m-from/">Contentful's announcement last week</a> that it had raised $175 million in a round led by Tiger Global – valuing the company at $3 billion. After posting a banner 2020, the headless CMS player has a mighty wind in its sails with the confidence of a major investment firm. With 600 employees and room to grown, this news also led the Berlin-based firm to <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2021/08/03/contentful-takes-three-floors-molson-coors-former-headquarters/">secure three floors of a Denver high rise</a>, formerly occupied by Molson Coors.

The news isn't that surprising considering that in May, Contentsquare raised <a href="https://contentsquare.com/blog/contentsquare-500m-series-e-investment/" target="_blank">$500M in Series E funding – placing them at a $2.8B valuation</a>. So... what happens when the world's biggest CRM and most used business messaging platform join forces? You show everyone how to navigate a pandemic. 
With the persistence of Covid languishing over the economy, businesses are still adapting to an unpredictable "normal" and continuing to rely on digital technologies to maintain continuity and drive revenue. <h2>Optimizely Named a Leader in The Forrester Wave™ for Digital Experience Platforms (DXPs)</h2>

In the DXP Game of Thrones, Optimizely <a href="https://www.optimizely.com/company/press/optimizely-named-a-leader-in-digital-experience-platforms-by-independent-research-firm/" target="_blank">announced</a> its crown as a Leader in The Forrester Wave™ for Digital Experience Platforms (DXPs), Q3 2021. 
While no dragons were involved (at least to our knowledge), Optimizely – <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/episerver-rebrands-as-optimizely-following-acquisition/" target="_blank">formerly Episerver</a> – has had a series of industry-conquering <a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/search/acquisitions/field/organizations/num_acquisitions/episerver" target="_blank">acquisitions</a> in its rise to DXP domination. Their latest snack: Zaius, a Customer Data Platform (CDP) with key AI and ML capabilities and a decent industry footprint. Like other leading enterprise DXPs, Optimizely saw this acquisition as a necessity for addressing its critical data gap and improving its competitive posture. 
In its vendor profile, the Forrester report noted that "Optimizely has a highly acquisitive strategy as it grows beyond its content roots as Episerver. Compared with other vendors we evaluated, Optimizely shows strength in testing and optimization, digital commerce, and platform operations. It also has strength in campaign management, customer journey management, and platform certifications." 
All solid points in Optimizely's favor as the competition at the top gets heavier. 
You might recall that Optimizely was also recognized as a Leader for the second consecutive year in the <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/key-takeaways-from-gartners-2021-magic-quadrant-for-digital-experience-platforms/" target="_blank">Gartner 2021 Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms</a>, trailing right behind Adobe and <a href="https://www.acquia.com/" target="_blank">Acquia</a>. But the Forrester report reorients the players on the chessboard, with Optimizely trailing just behind Adobe but outperforming the likes of Acquia, Sitecore, and Bloomreach.
Optimizely's platform received the highest possible scores in experience management and delivery, vision, delivery model, supporting services, and average deal size criteria. According to the Forrester report, "Reference customers told us that they like Optimizely's flexibility in their licensing model when expanding the set of sites… one reference said, 'Optimizely was very simple to get up and running — more so than other DXPs I've implemented.'"
Not a bad place to be as the race heats up.
<h2>WordPress Releases "Tatum" 5.8 </h2>

There's a moment in "Kind of Blue" where Mile Davis and John Coltrane start merging into one being, completing each other's scales and echoing one another's brassy calls. Like anything in jazz, it's the improvisation – and the unexpected composition – that makes your toes tap. 
And like jazz, the latest version of WordPress attempts to bring a little more poetic soul to its code. Whether it hits the right notes is entirely up to users now.
Speaking of... WordPress <a href="https://wordpress.org/news/2021/07/tatum/" target="_blank">released its new 5.8</a> record last week. They're calling it "Tatum" in honor of Art Tatum, the prolific jazz pianist. It's now available for download or update in your WordPress dashboard. 
Last month, we talked about WordPress 5.8's Beta and the features that it was expected to deliver, such as more powerful blocks, enhanced editing capabilities, and other <a href="https://make.wordpress.org/updates/2021/01/21/big-picture-goals-2021/" target="_blank">big picture goals</a> like <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/updates-on-wordcamp-2021-wordpress-5-8-beta-details-and-gutenberg-enhancements/" target="_blank">Full Site Editing</a>. Manage Widgets with Blocks: The power of blocks has come to both the Block Widgets Editor and the Customizer. Now you can add blocks both in widget areas across your site and with live preview through the Customizer.
Display Posts with New Blocks and Patterns: The Query Loop Block makes it possible to display posts based on specified parameters, like a PHP loop without the code. Easily display posts from a specific category to do things like creating a portfolio or a page full of your favorite recipes.
List View: As blocks increase, patterns emerge, and content creation gets easier. As a result, new solutions are needed to make complex content easy to navigate. List View is the best way to jump between layers of content and nested blocks. Since the List View gives you an overview of all the blocks in your content, you can now navigate quickly to the precise block you need.
Edit Templates Around Posts: You can also use the familiar block editor to edit templates that hold your content. Simply activate a block theme or a theme that has opted in for this feature. Switch from editing your posts to editing your pages and back again, all while using a familiar block editor.
Global Styles and Global Settings APIs: Control the editor settings, available customization tools, and style blocks using a theme.json file in the active theme. This configuration file enables or disables features and sets default styles for both a website and blocks.

"GraphQL powers modern e-commerce and digital transformation," said Jon Voigt, CEO at Agility CMS. "With this launch of GraphQL support, Agility CMS can help enterprises to build superior digital solutions with ease." 
Developed by Facebook, GraphQL has been the query language of choice for many CMSs, especially headless CMSs. GraphQL is designed to make APIs flexible, fast, precise, and developer-friendly, and it's rapidly becoming the standard for API-based data access.

Nearly a household name across the digital marketing community, Constant Contact is a legacy platform that provides a full suite of marketing tools catering mainly to small businesses, freelancers, and nonprofits. <h2>Salesforce and AWS expand partnership with key integrations</h2>

<h2>OpenText and Hyland named "Leaders" in Content Platforms by Forrester</h2>

It's hard to believe that it's already Q2 of 2021. Like clockwork, Forrester has issued its quarterly Wave Report for Content Platforms, and both <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/opentext-adds-new-content-services-to-power-modern-work-in-the-cloud/" target="_blank">OpenText</a> and <a href="https://www.hyland.com/" target="_blank">Hyland</a> are battling out the pole position with <a href="https://www.microsoft.com" target="_blank">Microsoft</a>. 
OpenText <a href="https://www.opentext.com/about/press-releases?id=D5A0D9EE2F914B948C0C0722E5F2B23B" target="_blank">announced</a> that its Extended ECM has been named a "Leader" in the <a href="https://www.opentext.com/info/ecm/forrester-wave" target="_blank">Q2 2021 Wave Report,</a> receiving the highest possible scores in the criteria of support for team or project workspaces, packaged applications, integration and interoperability, and lifecycle management.
OpenText's product strategy and focus on enterprise applications have been amplified by its multi-year cloud investment. In April, OpenText also launched its cloud-native SaaS offering, <a href="https://blogs.opentext.com/introducing-opentext-core-content/" target="_blank">Core Content</a>, built on its OT2 platform. All of this is shifting the dynamics in its favor, and Forrester is clearly taking notice – as they are only trailing Microsoft. 
Likewise, Hyland has also been <a href="https://www.hyland.com/en/learn/it-programs/forrester-wave-content-services-Q2-2021" target="_blank">named a "Leader"</a> in the report, buoyed by its cloud and innovation strategy and its vertical focus. If you recall, <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/hyland-enters-agreement-to-acquire-nuxeo/" target="_blank">Hyland purchased Nuxeo</a> in March of this year, giving the platform some extra juice with both enterprise content management (ECM) and digital asset management (DAM) capabilities. 
Hyland is clearly driving digital transformation with a modern and forward-thinking approach, leveraging a cloud-first vision and a variety of scalable cloud offerings – including the <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/hyland-acquires-alfresco-focuses-on-cloud-and-global-expansion-of-enterprise-cms/" target="_blank">Alfresco Digital Business Platform.</a> Additionally, Hyland is gaining ground with its wide array of options, including open platform development, low-code toolkits, and repeatable, specialized industry and departmental solutions.

CMS Monthly Recap: WP Engine Launches Enterprise WordPress Platform, Salesforce and AWS Expand Partnership, and More

There were no crystal balls at last week’s <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/mach-alliance-releases-study-on-adoption-of-mach-technologies-by-tech-leaders-qa-with-sonja-keerl/">MACH Alliance</a> board meeting – at least none we could spot. But there were still quite a few salient prognostications being conjured during an unscripted Q&amp;A with select partners and media.
Moderated by <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/holly-hall-4b14a945/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Holly Hall</a>, managing director of the MACH Alliance, the lively discussion covered a range of pertinent topics, namely the economic slowdown looming over 2023.
CMS Critic was invited to listen in on the roundtable, which featured <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/casper-aagaard-rasmussen/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Casper Rasmussen</a>, MACH Alliance President and Global SVP of Technology at Valtech, as well as three MACH Alliance Executive Board Members: <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/gordana-vuckovic/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gordana Vuckovic</a>, Chief Revenue Officer at Vue Storefront; <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jon-panella-b616911/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jon Panella</a>, Group Vice President at Publicis Sapient; and <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/tareknseir/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tarek Nseir</a>, Head of Digital Engagement, EMEA at EPAM Systems.
<h2>Revolution meets recession</h2>
The roundtable kicked off with two earth-shaking words: economic downturn.
Of course, this subject is on everyone's mind, particularly those in the technology sector where jobs are already being shed by the likes of <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/meta-follows-twitter-in-making-major-job-cuts-11668028132" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amazon and Adobe</a>. Are these the canaries in the proverbial coal mine?
While many economists have been chattering about an impending “chill” on the horizon, the Wall Street Journal is now forecasting a <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/economists-now-expect-a-recession-job-losses-by-next-year-11665859869" target="_blank" rel="noopener">63% probability that the U.S. market tips into recession</a> in the next 12 months—which in turn could ignite a global contagion.  
Despite the impending challenges, the discussion turned to the rising role of the CFO as an activator, particularly for B2B organizations looking to reduce costs and make critical decisions around operations. Inviting CFOs into the conversation is helping to accelerate and optimize delivery—which is ultimately driving the customer experience.
As Jon Panella pointed out, one of the biggest impediments to businesses and manufacturers in 2022 has been the constant disruptions to the supply chain, which has impacted the customer’s expectation of same-day delivery. Despite significant technological advances around supply chain visibility, the lack of access to resources continues to be a drag on businesses as they plan for next year.
<h2>MACH is accelerating composable transformation</h2>
According to Tarek Nseir, the pace of transformation is accelerating across the enterprise. In B2B specifically, he is seeing signs that businesses are adjusting their operating models to be more composable—and that MACH is becoming a force.
Casper Rasmussen echoed this, stating that in the B2B space, there’s a growing degree of MACH preference and that buyers are looking for services. He went on to say that the MACH Alliance is providing a “rubber stamp” for customers, allowing MACH vendors to achieve greater traction.
“We will continue to provide innovation and optimization for the buyer’s journey,” said Rasmussen.
He also talked about the continued development of tools to aid in the decision-making process, improve TCO, and help organizations understand the costs of composable versus a single monolithic vendor.
<h2>Enhancing the investment in education </h2>
There was broad consensus amongst the group on the Alliance’s investment in education, from skills training to enablement. As Rasmussen noted, this is about “helping companies from within” to improve their internal dynamics.
Gordana Vuckovic also noted that education is a key activator for transformation—but that it needs to be sustainable. The problem in the past, she said, is that experts can provide consulting and guidance but ultimately disengage from the relationship. Organizations need persistent access to knowledge in order to make MACH and composable strategies attainable.
According to Nseir, there has been an enormous deficit in education for B2B companies in particular. Panella agreed: “Being part of the MACH Alliance is a must,” he said. “Clients are coming in, asking ‘how can you help us follow the path?’”
<h2>Differentiating with composable</h2>
As Panella pointed out, the scope of composable offerings from ISVs and vendors has become more mature, allowing them to scale their products and services with greater ease—much like traditional monoliths. This seems to translate into a more bullish view of growth for the composable category in 2023.
But what’s driving platforms, agencies, and integrators to embrace composable? According to the group, the ability to innovate and test quickly has had the most dramatic impact. Companies don’t know which models are best, so composable solutions are streamlining the lifecycle of spinning up and down and delivering almost anywhere via headless and microservices. Because this can be replicated over and over without the rigors of “rip and replace,” the entire process becomes much more efficient.
Rasmussen also spoke about the need for differentiation through composable, and how MACH has helped organizations pivot along the way. He went on to espouse the benefits of more meaningful personalization behind products and brand experiences that enhance loyalty and equity.
<h2>B2B versus B2C and tracking the “iterations”</h2>
There was some pointed discussion around the challenges facing B2B organizations and the adoption of MACH and composable. As a matter of context, it was suggested that most B2C companies might be on their third “iteration” of a strategy or stack, while B2B organizations are still on a first or second wave of transformation. This is likely why Alliance members haven’t seen as much greenfield opportunity in B2B (as of yet).
Despite the lag, the group did point out that B2B organizations tend to have better data than their consumer counterparts, enabling them to build better experiences around products. The standout observation: B2Bs have known customers, but not the required tech stack.
The group also talked discussed the opportunity event horizon for businesses to embrace MACH. Even those companies tethered to a years-long contract with a monolithic platform can start small and build inroads toward more advanced architectures in the future.
Their advice? Don't get stuck looking at the larger view. Instead, think in “smaller chunks.”
<h2>MACHifying more of the stack</h2>
One question posed to the roundtable was about traditional monolithic platforms becoming more composable. Prompting the discussion was <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/reviews/salesforce-cms-review-evolving-a-crm-powerhouse-into-a-dxp-challenger/">Salesforce</a>, which launched its <a href="https://www.ziffity.com/blog/salesforce-composable-storefront/#:~:text=In%20August%20this%20year%2C%20Salesforce,while%20increasing%20engagement%20and%20sales." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Composable Storefront</a> in August. A fully-customizable, <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/top-headless-commerce-platforms/">headless</a> digital storefront, the new service allows users to make changes on their eCommerce site with greater speed and flexibility.
The solution seems to fit a more composable mold (it's in the name, after all). But does it meet the MACH threshold? 
The other specific example they pondered was ERP, and whether companies like <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/sap-drops-8-billion-to-buy-qualtrics/">SAP</a> would evolve their architectures to become more composable—or face competitors with MACH-oriented offerings.
Rasmussen replied, suggesting that these layers of the stack continue to reign as monoliths because there has been no other place for planning and resource data to live within the stack.
“Now with MACH, we have a place,” he said.
<h2>To be MACH or not to be, that is the question</h2>
The group also reflected on the efforts of other DXPs like Salesforce to position themselves as composable players in the market. When asked if these platforms might fit the MACH mold and become Alliance partners, Rasmussen reinforced the guiding principles of the organization, which mapped to his comments in a <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/the-future-is-composable-a-conversation-with-new-mach-alliance-president-casper-rasmussen/">previous interview</a> we conducted a few months ago.
“There are key qualities and attributes that need to be present,” he said. “[These organizations] are not there yet.”
This spurred further comments from the group about the key differentiators between MACH and composable. While the MACH Alliance believes fully in composability, the movement falls short of the specific tenants crystallized by the Alliance charter. As John Panella pointed out: “All MACH solutions are composable, but not all composable solutions are MACH.”
That may be true. But continuing to clarify the differentiators must be a central focus, particularly as more organizations seek guidance on their composable journey.  
<h2>Key Takeaways</h2>
It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see that education will be the most critical initiative for the MACH Alliance in 2023. While issues like orchestrating the data layer or finding skilled practitioners will remain persistent challenges, it’s clear that teaching and leading are the essential tools for driving greater adoption.
While many organizations are predicting less-than-rosy economic conditions over the next 12 months, the MACH Alliance sees opportunities for accelerating growth by decoupling the innovation cycle. For B2B companies and manufacturers that have struggled due to supply chain issues and unprecedented inflation, the move into MACH may seem daunting—but also ripe with possibilities.
On a final note: holding these open roundtables is applause-worthy. It speaks volumes about the Alliance’s commitment to its members and provides a layer of transparency to the broader market. It also underscores the deeper mission of supporting MACH at a community level, where a "rising tide lifts all boats."

Even as composable architectures become more of a fixture across enterprise stacks, Mark Benioff's monolith is promoting a seemingly decoupled offering.
<a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/reviews/salesforce-cms-review-evolving-a-crm-powerhouse-into-a-dxp-challenger/">Salesforce</a> is the latest mega platform to embrace MACH mania, announcing its new <a href="https://www.salesforce.com/products/commerce-cloud/headless-commerce/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Composable Storefront</a> – a fully-customizable, <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/top-headless-commerce-platforms/">headless</a> digital storefront that lets online retailers make site changes with the speed and flexibility needed to increase sales, conversions, and basket size while helping to drive down costs.
With the announcement, Salesforce also introduced pre-built packages made ​​specifically for headless implementations and offered several use cases with commerce partners. According to Salesforce, businesses can "supercharge" storefront performance and engagement with a fast, app-like site experience using its <a href="https://vuestorefront.io/pwa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">progressive web app (PWA)</a> technology, which decreases page load time and minimizes disruption for online shoppers.

Salesforce Unveils Composable Storefront, a Digital Commerce Solution to Help Retailers Go Headless Fast

Looks like Salesforce has intentions to get even bigger (if that's even possible) by acquiring software maker, Mulesoft. This acquisition is estimated to cost Salesforce about $6.5 billion dollars, a hefty price but according to Salesforce, well worth it.
MuleSoft currently provides one of the world's leading platforms for building application networks that connect enterprise apps, data and devices, across cloud and on-premise.
Salesforce intends to have MuleSoft power the new Salesforce Integration Cloud, which will enable all enterprises to surface any data–regardless of where it resides–to drive deep and intelligent customer experiences throughout a personalized 1:1 journey.
More than 1,200 customers, including Coca-Cola, Barclays, Unilever and Mount Sinai, rely on MuleSoft to change and innovate faster, deliver differentiated customer experiences and increase operational efficiency making this a very intelligent buy for Salesforce.
