dotCMS 4.2 includes new platform capabilities as well as significant improvements to overall performance, manageability, and scalability.
Oct. 17, 2017 – Miami, FL – dotCMS, a leading-edge, open source Java content management software company, introduces the concept of Layout-as-a-Service (LaaS) and many other new features and improvements to the platform in their latest release, dotCMS 4.2. This release is a part of the ongoing 4.x Series which focuses on improving the overall dotCMS platform experience.
“Layout-as-a-Service is a step beyond Content-as-a-Service (CaaS) – it addresses a real challenge when business start to explore headless or CaaS solutions,” said Will Ezell, dotCMS CTO. “Layout-as-a-Service allows business users to make meaningful content, module and layout decisions within a friendly authoring environment, all of which can then be accessed via RESTful APIs.
“This means that single page apps (SPAs) and other IoT applications can call not just raw content, but real rendered layouts and modules, which include server side personalization and other context driven information. We've heard again and again that while businesses users appreciate CaaS capabilities, they struggle with how to preview and manage the final look and feel across the various presentation platforms. Layout-as-a-Service helps solve those challenges.”
Along with LaaS, dotCMS 4.2 includes new features that simplify the manageability of SEO and multilingual sites by offering Vanity URLs, URL Rewrites, and Language Variables as content – improving the flexibility and ease of management of these items in dotCMS.
“When we get feedback from our customers on how we can improve the platform to make it easier for them to use and manage, we take it seriously,” said Ezell. “That’s why our customers will see significant improvements in both the performance and scalability of the platform with the dotCMS 4.2 release.”
dotCMS customers can expect to see performance improvements when saving and push publishing content, in some cases by an order of magnitude. They’ll also notice that dotCMS can be run completely stateless, as an auto scaling group that leverages externalized Elasticsearch and datagrid type caches has been upgraded.
Other changes to note in dotCMS 4.2 include IE11 improvements and fixes, improved Windows Touch Screen support, upgrades to several integrated libraries (including Hazelcast), and some security improvements.
