The Plone 4.0 Framework Team and release manager Eric Steele are pleased to announce the first release candidate for Plone 4.0.
Plone 4.0 brings massive performance and scalability improvements, a brand new default theme, and a revamped user interface.

Other new features include:

<li>An improved first-run experience, particularly creating a new Plone site</li>
<li>Streamlined user account creation and extensible member profiles</li>
<li>Upgraded infrastructure: Plone now runs on Python 2.6 and Zope 2.12 making for easier deployment and a smaller memory footprint</li>
<li>Built-in file-system storage for Image and File content types makes databases with large binaries easier to manage</li>
<li>Pop-up forms for login and many management functions</li>
<li>TinyMCE visual editor improves formatted text editing</li>
<li>Full-text indexing of East Asian languages</li>
<li>Group dashboards</li>
<li>The new standard theme utilizes a flexible, grid-based layout that provides a better base for clean, modern theming</li>
<li>Hundreds of bug fixes and tweaks</li>
<li>A well-tested upgrader that makes upgrading from Plone 3 fast and easy</li>
<li>Performance increases that nearly double pages per second in typical situations.</li>
</ul>
How you can help
Release candidates serve as proposed final releases for the project.  While Plone 4.0 has been tested by many members of the Plone developer community, and is already running in production on a number of sites, it needs wider testing to flush out any remaining critical bugs before we can stamp it as a “final release.”  And that's where we need you.
Here's what you can do to help:
<ol>
<li>Test our installer packages by downloading and installing Plone 4.0 RC1 from the <a href="http://plone.org/products/plone/releases/4.0">Plone 4.0 downloads page</a>.</li>
<li>Help us test the upgrade scripts by migrating a copy of your site's data.</li>
<li>Report any errors to the Plone bug tracker.</li>
</ol>

Plone 4 Reaches Release Candidate Status

This month's edition of CMS Critic recommends… brings you our suggestions for the most versatile content management systems. This can mean a lot of things so let's first clarify how we have made our selections.
First, the CMS must be able to be expanded upon, must be flexible, and be used for multiple purposes.
Without further adieu, here are our recommendations for the most versatile CMS (to date):

<li>Drupal 
It's not possible to speak about versatility and expandability and not include Drupal. Drupal is perhaps one of the most flexible platforms available, both in the commercial and free marketplaces. A large part of this is due to the fact that it really is a content management framework from the get-go and can function in a myriad of manners. Some common uses of Drupal include Intranets, Project Management Platform, Publishing Platform, External facing Website management, and Social networking platform to name a few. <li>MODx 
MODx is incredibly flexible. This is especially so with their latest release, MODx Revolution, which can be used for pretty much anything and has a number of ways with which it can be expanded.MODx is effectively an application framework with a CMS built on top of it. While Drupal is also known as a framework, MODx does not have as steep a learning curve (in our opinion). <li>Plone

<li>Concrete5 
Concrete5 has been widely adopted by a number of web development firms due to its flexibility and ease of use. Amongst the competition, Concrete5 is perhaps the most user-friendly with inline editing, plenty of plugins to extend its functionality, and very good support.
