Packt today announced that its donations to open source projects have surpassed the $300,000 mark. Following its first donation to the phpMyAdmin project in April 2004, the company has gone on to provide sustained support for over 70 different open source projects.
Packt has introduced initiatives such as the annual Open Source Award and Open Source Project Royalty Scheme to provide sustained donations to projects over the last six years.
“Most of the money that we've used, donated from Packt has gone towards running jQuery conferences for the community and bringing together the jQuery team to do development work together.” said John Resig, the founder of the popular JavaScript library, jQuery. “The financial contributions have been very valuable and in that regard, have resulted in a team that's able to operate much more efficiently and effectively.”
The Open Source Awards, now in its fifth year, has been adapted from the established Open Source Content Management System (CMS) Award with the wider aim of encouraging, supporting, recognizing and rewarding all open source projects. “The support that Packt has shown, through its book royalties and awards, has contributed to that success and helped the Drupal project handle its growth” added Dries Buytaert, founder of the CMS Drupal, winner of the 2007 and 2008’s Overall CMS Award, and a project which also benefits from Packt’s Open Source Project Royalty Scheme.
The Open Source Project Royalty Scheme allows projects to benefit from the publication of a Packt book, as they are allocated a percentage of every copy sold. “This is a support system that we provide to every open source project that we publish on” said Julian Copes, a spokesperson for Packt Open Source. “Packt is proud to have reached this significant milestone and remains committed to keeping donations at the heart of its long-term publishing strategy.”
Open source software is freely available and free from restrictions. Open source projects survive largely on financial donations and support to cover the essential costs of running an open source project. Therefore, regular donations are vital for their ongoing development and relevancy. “Moodle is grateful for the royalty donations that Packt have volunteered to send us as part of their Open Source Project Royalty Scheme.” said Martin Dougiamas, founder of Moodle the hugely popular open source course management system. “The money donated helps us fund a developer for a few months a year and thus contributes directly towards Moodle core development, support and improvements in the future.”
Are you an open source project that Packt has published a book on? Packt believes in Open Source and your project may be able to receive support through the Open Source Project Royalty Scheme. Simply contact Packt: royalty@packtpub.com.

DotNetNuke Corp., the company behind the most widely adopted Web Content Management Platform for Microsoft .NET, announced its intention to shift the primary core development language for its award-winning DotNetNuke core platform from Visual Basic (VB.NET) to C#.
The first official release of the DotNetNuke platform available in C# will be Version 6.0 which will be publicly available for users of the DotNetNuke Community, Professional and Enterprise Editions in Q2 2011, with the first Community Technology Preview available in early March.
In recent years there has been a much greater emphasis on the C# language in the .NET ecosystem in terms of innovation, tooling, and examples. In switching to C#, DotNetNuke Corporation believes its developer community and install base will benefit from greater access to development resources, source code examples, and enterprise acceptance.
A Community Technology Preview will be available in early March which will provide the opportunity for users and developers to get early access to the recently converted C# platform. Community participation and feedback will play a vital role in ensuring a high quality final release.
The .NET Framework provides design-time, compile-time, and run-time support for multiple programming languages. As a result, the DotNetNuke API will preserve full compatibility through this transition. This means that all platform extensions will continue to be fully compatible with the C# DotNetNuke 6.0 core.
DotNetNuke extensions developers, commercial or otherwise, will not be negatively impacted by the change as they will continue to be able to develop and deploy custom extensions in their preferred software development language including VB.NET or C#.
DotNetNuke is the fastest growing open source web CMS ever on .NET with over 1,100 subscription customers, 33,000 Snowcovered customers, 400 percent year-over-year growth, and more than 600,000 production web sites worldwide. Connect with us online: Twitter.com/dnncorp (company) or Twitter.com/dnnsc (Snowcovered marketplace); DotNetNuke blogs; and the DotNetNuke Community LinkedIn Group.
According to Shaun Walker, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of DotNetNuke Corp., “As a long-time Visual Basic developer, I have personally witnessed the gradual shift in the .NET developer market as C# has become the dominant choice for the enterprise. After extensive technical and business analysis, I believe the time is right for DotNetNuke to make the move to C#. I believe this migration will accelerate the adoption and deployment of the DotNetNuke Web Content Management Platform and make our product more attractive to a wider audience.”

Do you want to add a custom form (however complex and whatever number of pages) on your site at the speed of thought? Look no further than Tiki Trackers.
With fields like images, dates, files, custom lists, and more, Tiki makes the creation of structured content a pleasure — while other CMS applications just leave you with a bad headache. And Tiki accomplishes this with simple, on-screen, browser-based configuration. There's no need to code even a single line.
Content in Trackers is searchable ”automagically”. In addition, Trackers are sortable, embeddable in any other content page, and secured with Tiki's robust permission set.
<ul>
<li>You can interlink them</li>
<li>You can navigate through a life-cyle</li>
<li>You can use them to create wiki pages using a standard, common style.</li>
</ul>
When it comes to creating, managing, and deploying structured content, Tiki Trackers are a powerhouse. There's no doubt that Trackers are one of the most powerful and versatile features in Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware.
When used to collect, store, and organize data, they rock. “Under the covers,” you can think of trackers as a miniature database or spreadsheet that runs inside your Tiki site. With Trackers, you can easily build a “Contact Us” form, a customer relationship system (CRM), or anything in between.
Let's look at some use cases:
<ul>
<li>A simple “contact us” form:</li>
</ul>
<img src="https://tiki.org/image554" alt="Contact Form" />
<ul>
<li>A searchable dataset:</li>
</ul>
<img src="https://tiki.org/image556" alt="Searchable Dataset" />
<ul>
<li>A database of reference guides:</li>
</ul>
<img src="https://tiki.org/image555" alt="Publications" />
Starting in version 4, Trackers could handle complex formatting, in addition to simple tables. With “Pretty” Trackers, developers can apply Smarty templates or use wiki pages to display Tracker output in any way imaginable. And in version 7 (planned for April, 2011), the Tiki Community plans to begin moving Trackers to the next level, providing improved performance and even tighter integration with other Tiki feature.
