What I Mean to Say: A Practitioner Perspective on AI, Semantics, and Content Evolution

Xenia Von Wedel from SocialRadius recently did a Q&amp;A with CEO Interview Elie Auvray, to get a feeling what the Adobe / Day Software means for the Content Management market in general, and for Jahia in particular and decided to share her interview with our readers. Thanks Xenia!
Xenia Von Wedel: The announced Adobe acquisition of Day Software, a WCM competitor of yours, strikes us as a bit odd. What does WCM have to do with graphics tools?
Elie Auvray: First of all, I would like to congratulate the Day team for an outstanding deal. It is also a great recognition of the value provided by next-generation WCMs, so we at Jahia are happy about that as well. 
The acquisition makes sense for Adobe, as it allows them to cover the whole value chain from content creation to its management and publication across any channel. Day will be the framework Adobe lacked for their enterprise offerings.
Xenia Von Wedel: They say that “Day customers will be able to leverage more interactive application and document capabilities from Adobe® AIR®, Adobe® Flash®, Flex, Adobe® LiveCycle® and PDF” – can’t they do that with Jahia as well?
Elie Auvray: Yes, a number of our customers already integrated some of Adobe’s flagship products with Jahia. Even through Adobe products aren’t open source, they are very interoperable – if they weren’t nobody would use them.
Xenia Von Wedel: Will the acquisition give Day a competitive advantage over Jahia?
Elie Auvray: No. Once the acquisition by Adobe is approved by authorities, Day will be even more focused on what they call the “Customer Experience Platform”, which is but one facet of Jahia’s offerings. Our mission is to unite and present content, no matter where it comes from and no matter what’s its type. Therefore Jahia will still be the vendor of choice for customers who need to tie all their content together with a sophisticated front-end solution that makes all their information silos work together, smoothly. That is very different from the mission of the now Adobe-controlled “Customer Experience Platform”. Jahia will continue to champion robust open source standards and frameworks, such as the Apache foundation. We hope that Day will continue to contribute to these frameworks, but Adobe, quite frankly, hasn’t been the best promoter of standards in our industry, aside from their own.
Xenia Von Wedel: How do you think the acquisition will influence the content management market in general?
Elie Auvray: For the casual observer, it could seem that this acquisition is simply in line with the consolidation recent trends, starting with EMC-Documentum, then Open Text-Vignette and Autonomy-Interwoven – not to mention a myriad of smaller or more technology-oriented acquisitions.
But the Adobe-Day acquisition is unique in that it polarizes the market even more and, at the same time, it commoditizes so-called ECM solutions: By making Day the backbone of its content value chain (from creation to management and delivery) as opposed to Alfresco – which seemed the logical choice considering Alfresco’s OEM relationship with Adobe – Adobe validates that Content repositories are the new commodities, and that what really matters is the tools and composite applications that are capable of being repository-agnostic.
That is very good news for Jahia, as we’ve hammered that message since our inception. It’s not good news for pure document-centric vendors that built their entire core around more limited content types, such as documents and records.
I remember that John Newton, CTO of Alfresco, said at the 2009 Boston Gilbane Conference that “a WCM can live without a DMS but a DMS cannot live without a WCM”. Adobe’s move affirms the wisdom of that comment.
Xenia Von Wedel: What’s the relationship status between WCM and ECM?
Elie Auvray: User experience platforms like Fatwire, Day, and Jahia communicate with, rather than compete with ECM/DMS. That’s why connectors, REST interfaces, and standard like CMIS are so important.
At the end of the day, what matters is software that unifies those content silos. At Jahia, we started unlocking the frontiers among software classifications with our United Content Hub (link: <a href="http://www.jahia.com/jahia/Jahia/Home/features/jahia_enterprise_class_software/Enterprise_Connectors">http://www.jahia.com/jahia/Jahia/Home/features/jahia_enterprise_class_software/Enterprise_Connectors</a>)
We think that Day is a great competitor for these reasons. It's good to face competition on such an innovative market, as it reinforces Jahia’s vision. As it is, customers shortlist us on a regular basis at the expense of Microsoft and other ECM and portal vendors that fail to deliver comparable value.
The relevance of this convergence, from a user perspective, came from Stephen Powers on January 22 of this year in “Web Content Management and Portal: Together at Last?”:
IBM is betting that the WCM and portal markets will converge and cease to be separate markets, with vendors offering combined WCM/portals suites that have one administrative tool set, one presentation management structure, one repository, and so on.
Xenia Von Wedel: Although Day Software is not open source, CTO David Nüscheler has a strong voice in the open source community. What impact will the acquisition have on the CMS community?
Elie Auvray: We really hope that David will continue to contribute to the open source community. Whether he can do it within Adobe remains to be seen, considering Adobe’s track record of strong, but not so open, products. Similar fears surfaced after Oracle acquired Sun, and the recent retirement of some of the standards Sun had shepherded should make us wary of Day’s future involvement with standards.
Xenia Von Wedel: How will the acquisition affect the remaining CMS players?
Elie Auvray: Our industry is maturing and consolidation is a natural and healthy evolution that serves the greater good: innovation. When an industry consolidates, it means yesterday’s innovations becomes today’s commodities, setting the stage for the next wave of disruption!
Xenia Von Wedel: Big companies tend to acquire, rather than innovate – can smaller players still play a vital role?
Elie Auvray: Yes. Smaller players are in the best position to innovate, since they are more nimble and technology-driven. Larger Software companies are tied to the short term imperatives of the stock market, focusing on maintenance revenues as opposed to the next big thing.
Xenia Von Wedel: Day Software and Jahia are competing in the same high-end/Enterprise CMS space – does Jahia still stand a chance considering the massive sales power Adobe brings to Day?
Elie Auvray: Blue chip companies often pick Jahia over much larger software vendors for a simple reason: our software relieves their pains faster and it costs them much less.
That has nothing to do with in-house sales power. What sales power does is to bring more opportunities. Our indirect sales model serves us well in that regard: 60% of our software-related revenue is brought by partners, and some of them have tremendous sales power. Our job is to make the best product that our partners can easily deploy and put in front of more and more customers.
Xenia Von Wedel: Conversely, will the acquisition give Jahia a price or flexibility advantages?
Elie Auvray: There has already been a lot of debate among pundits on the acquisition’s impact on the price of Day’s licenses: the short answer is no one really knows!
Xenia Von Wedel: Day Software and Jahia both say that content is everything – what are Jahia’s differentiators?
Elie Auvray: Yes, Jahia and Day share the same vision around what content really is. What we bring is an added dimension of “whatever the source or type ,” – be it a PDF stored in Alfresco, Documentum, or Sharepoint, a JSR 286 portlet, a mashup, a widget, an RSS feed or an open social gadget — these are all natively managed and supported objects in Jahia.
The market used to be divided – and still is, to a certain extent – among ECM, DMS, Portal, WCM, mashups, and other content silos, due to technical incompatibilities. This causes great confusion among users, integrators, and customers when they have to select the right product for their project.
This divide no longer makes sense, since projects must now use multiple components, or “content composites”, to fulfill customer requirements.
Xenia Von Wedel: Could you tell us more about these “content composites”?
Elie Auvray: Content Composites will make your website, portal, extranet, intranet, Enterprise 2.0, or whatever the name project much more flexible. At the end of the day it's all about what you want to do with these content-rich applications; but the core features required to deliver such solutions are basically the same. Content composites are small parts of a web site such as: Articles, files, document list, breadcrumb path, tag cloud, collaborative application, document sharing, social interactions through comments, votes, wikis, forums, and blogs: it's only a question of what, when and how you want to aggregate those content objects within your web solution.
This is consistent with our vision from day one: that all these objects should be integrated into an intuitive and unified web interface, where webmasters, content producers, and even developers can work efficiently without having to worry about the type of content or composite, or where it comes from.
We called this “web content integration”: combining WCM, DMS, and portal features in a unified web platform that communicates seamlessly with complementary third party software. Our next version, Jahia 6.5, will deliver the latest evolution of this concept in the most powerful Composite Content Platform in the market today.
Xenia Von Wedel: How do you envision the future?
Elie Auvray: Information (collective knowledge) is the most important asset companies have, after their people. As a matter of fact, Adobe products are key in our industry. But the real value is content. Not the file type, the tools or the technology.
Information –wherever it comes from- needs to be controlled and accessible not only from anywhere, but also smartly leveraged across different sites and applications. Ubiquitous digital content must be freed from technological limitations. This is the challenge confronting next-generation WCMs like Day and Jahia.

Elie Auvray co-founded Jahia Solutions Group, starting french operations in 2002 and is acting as President of the Board and CEO. In 1996, Elie founded Voice, a software vendor, pioneering the easy-to-use web application development with Vivendi Group as their first customer. Adobe - Day: Acquisition or Big push for the Content Management Market?

ocProducts are pleased to announce the full release of ocPortal Version 5, our highly advanced web content management system. This follows a short release candidate version. This version introduces a number of bug fixes, new features, usability improvements, and a wide-sweeping design overhaul since version 4.3.2.
There are a number of key changes and additions within this version of the software; The Admin zone has been given an overhaul including new drop down menus and a much more useful front page. Design change highlights include :

<li> A complete redesign of the Gallery system (we know this is going to make a lot of people very happy)</li>
<li>The member profile screen has been completely redesigned</li>
<li>A restructuring of the member points screen, making the points system far more intuitive.</li>
<li>The quiz screen has been redesigned</li>
<li>Just about every side block has been revised</li>
<li>A brand new commenting interface</li>
</ul>
We have given an overhaul to commenting, RSS and ratings features. These include allowing guests to choose a display name and improving the previewing of reviews. ocPortal version 5 has been thoroughly tested with IE6 and should display properly on this browser. We do however expect to drop support for IE6 once IE9 is released.
We have put a great deal of work into the ocPortal themeing system, with the aim of making it much easier for users to make their site look just how they want it to. Users can now preview all of the templates they are working on without needing switch between several screens. Other themeing features include making it easier to edit the site logo across all zones &amp; themes, alongside new CSS styled buttons. In addition to the aforementioned template screen preview system, you can methodically work through all the screens in the system in order to ensure your theme looks good.
The ocPortal gallery system has seen a raft of changes, including an improved edit screen and the ability to provide automatic video transcoding (this requires that ffmpeg is installed). There have also been changes and updates within the quiz feature, the events calendar, the catalogue system, the newsletter manager and CEDI.
We have added a new feature that we call “Real-time rain”, which allows you to visualise activity in your website, either in real-time or via historic playback, which you would otherwise only ever see in the form of plain-text logs. This feature is enormous fun for webmasters and is incredibly pretty.
We have made many more changes in addition to those listed above, which are too numerous to include here. A potential XSS vulnerability has been fixed with the latest Campsite release, which also improves session handling to avoid logged user session grabbing via CSRF attack. The vulnerability was discovered by High-Tech Bridge SA, Ethical Hacking &amp; Penetration Testing.
The developers have also taken this opportunity to improve the universal list function that allows the user to choose how to list articles in the admin interface and search those articles as well as further update the UI redesign. The next Campsite update is due at the end of August.

Campsite 3.4.1 Security Update Released

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and Day Software Holding AG (SIX: DAYN, OTCQX: DYIHY) announced the two companies have entered into a definitive agreement for Adobe to launch a public tender offer to acquire all of the publicly held registered shares of Day Software for CHF139 per share in cash in a transaction valued at approximately CHF255 million on a fully diluted equity-value basis. This approximates US$240 million at the current exchange rate.
Adobe’s acquisition of Day will strengthen the company’s enterprise software solutions with market leading Web Content Management (WCM), Digital Asset Management and Social Collaboration offerings. This acquisition represents a significant market opportunity for Adobe to help organizations transform themselves by enabling them to create, manage, distribute and monetize content while optimizing the web experience for their customers.

Transaction Details As part of the expected integration of the two companies, Day will operate as a product line within Adobe's Digital Enterprise Solutions Business Unit. Day CEO Erik Hansen will join Adobe reporting directly to Rob Tarkoff.
The proposed offer represents a premium of 59 percent over Day’s volume-weighted average share price for the last 60 trading days.  The Board of Directors of Day unanimously recommends the offer to Day shareholders.  The Chairman and the CEO of Day and other Board members have entered into undertakings to tender their shares.
The completion of the transaction, which is subject to customary government approvals and the satisfaction of other customary conditions, including a minimum acceptance threshold with respect to the tender offer, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Adobe’s 2010 fiscal year.
Adobe expects the acquisition will have no material impact on Adobe’s non-GAAP earnings for fiscal year 2010 and that it will be accretive to non-GAAP earnings for fiscal year 2011.

Adobe to Acquire Day Software

Nuxeo, the Open Source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) company, today announced an update to its Nuxeo Digital Asset Management product with the release of Nuxeo DAM 1.1, as well launching the hosted version, Nuxeo DAM – Cloud Edition. This new release of Nuxeo DAM incorporates feature enhancements driven directly by early adopter customers and the Nuxeo developer community.

Also launched today is Nuxeo DAM 1.1. The newest release of Nuxeo DAM includes feature enhancements driven by the feedback and requirements of early adopter clients: video enhancements, batch upload improvements and repository level integration with Nuxeo DM.
Video enhancements include automatic generation of nails that segment the content of a video file as part of the import process. These video chapters can be viewed individually, making it easier to locate scenes and find video segments to share among teams. Brand managers, digital archivists, research/intelligence analysts and content application builders will also find new video streaming provides a productivity boost. The application gives instant viewing access to a video by beginning to play before the file is completely downloaded.
New bulk import and editing functionality are additional time-savers for power-users. Nuxeo DAM can now import a larger number of files, with IPTC and EXIF metadata extraction and bulk tagging to speed up capture of digital assets. To ease large-scale media file processing, Nuxeo DAM also allows users to edit file descriptions, define metadata and adjust settings to a selection of multiple assets, putting more capabilities into the hands of content creators and consumers.

The first bugfix release of the JAMWiki 0.9.x series, JAMWiki 0.9.1 (code name “White Duck”) is now available for <a rel="nofollow" href="http://downloads.sourceforge.net/jamwiki/jamwiki-0.9.1.war">download from Sourceforge</a>. This release is a minor release that contains only bugfixes and one new feature; no changes have been made to CSS, the database schema, or any other area that would require special attention when upgrading. JAMWiki 0.9.1 released

The MediaWiki team have announced the first stable release of the 1.16 series. This new version encompasses the following changes since 1.15.x:

<li>Watchlists now have RSS/Atom feeds. RSS feeds generally are now hidden, since Atom is a better protocol and is supported by virtually all clients.</li>
<li>It's now possible to block users from sending email via Special:Emailuser.</li>
<li>The maintenance script system was overhauled. Most maintenance scripts now have a useful help page when you run them with –help.</li>
<li>AdminSettings.php is no longer required in order to run maintenance scripts. You can just set $wgDBadminuser and $wgDBadminpassword in your LocalSettings.php instead.</li>
<li>The preferences system was overhauled. Preferences are stored in a more compact format. Changes to site default preferences will automatically affect all users who have not chosen a different preference.</li>
<li>Support for SQLite was improved. Some broken features were fixed, and it now has an efficient full-text search.</li>
<li>The user groups ACL system was improved by allowing rights to be revoked, instead of just granted.</li>
<li>A new localisation caching system was introduced, which will make MediaWiki faster for almost everyone, especially when lots of extensions are enabled.</li>
</ul>
By default, this new system makes a lot of database queries. If your database is particularly slow, or if your system administrator limits your query count, or if you want to squeeze as much performance as possible out of Mediawiki, set $wgCacheDirectory to a writable path on the local filesystem. Make sure you have the DBA extension for PHP installed, this will improve performance further.

MediaWiki announces first stable release of 1.16 series

Symphony CMS has seen a new release with version 2.1 being let loose on the public. From the brilliantly funny press release by Craig Zheng of the development team:

Symphony CMS 2.1 released

<a href="/start-social-bookmarking-site-hotaru-cms/">Hotaru CMS</a> is an open source php content management system that has been in development since last summer. What makes it stand out amongst the crowd is it's ability to quickly create a social bookmarking site with minimal effort.
Yes, we know that Drigg, Pligg and other products exist in the market, however, they only serve a single use whereas Hotaru can do social bookmarking, magazine sites, blogs and more. This separates it from the pack as far as we are concerned. This is not to say that Pligg and Drigg are not great products, but they are heavily geared towards a single purpose.
Let's take a look at Hotaru shall we?
Installation is fairly straight forward and easy:

As you can see, it's a fairly straightforward process that's only 4 steps long and should be easy for most users.
Once the installation has completed, you can get started playing with the admin dashboard.
It's important to make sure you read the manual so that you know what steps you should take during and post installation. The manual (and others) can be found on their wiki at <a href="http://hotarudocs.com/Main_Page">http://hotarudocs.com/Main_Page</a>
Your first steps after installation should be to grab / install whichever plugins you would like to use for the site. For the purposes of this review, we uploaded the social bookmarking plugin pack. Now, this plugin pack contains a number of plugins that need to be enabled and some of them rely on others within the pack.
One thing we would recommend the developers change (and this is fairly minor) is to alter the plugin installation process so that if you select a plugin that relies on other plugins that exist but have not yet been installed, it provides an option to install the dependencies for you. Currently it does not do this.
As we said though, this is a minor annoyance and certainly not a strike against the system since you should only need to install a plugin one time.
On a positive note, we were very impressed with the fact that we could download packs of plugins geared towards altering the site instead of having to figure out which ones we needed on our own. This is something we'd like to see more systems actively provide. Drupal, for instance, provides a similar functionality with <a href="http://drupal.org/project/installation+profiles">installation profiles</a>.

We also noticed that the developers went one step beyond the norm and included a handy menu that allows a number of handy maintenance functions such as the ability to quickly close the site for maintenance, manage your site's cache, debug, optimize and even empty database tables!
For a developer, these are nice additions to the CMS and it's good to see they thought to include them.

<li>System is very fast and relatively easy to install / setup.</li>
<li>Availability of plugin packs to quickly add functionality to the site.</li>
<li>Plenty of uses for the CMS, all of which are easy to get started with.</li>
<li>Integrated caching.</li>
<li>Default install validates 100% XHTML 1.0 Transitional</li>
<li>Excellent documentation.</li>
</ul>
Cons:
<ul>
<li>Would like to see plugin dependencies installed automatically.</li>
<li>Still a bit new to the market (only a year old) but it is growing well.</li>

Hotaru CMS Review - Build your own Social Bookmarking Site!

We were recently contacted by the developers of a unique CMS called Hotaru (japanese for Firefly).
Hotaru is an open source PHP content management system with well over 100 plugins available to help you develop the perfect site. It has been in development since June of 2009 and has seen numerous updates since this time.
The Hotaru forums appear to be quite active with approximately 15 or so themes available for the system and plenty of plugins to extend it in a variety of ways.
While there are numerous ways this CMS can be used, the one we found the most intriguing was it's ability to act as a social bookmarking site:

Start your own Social Bookmarking site with Hotaru CMS!

Canto® Software today announced the availability of an update to the Cumulus product line that includes significant feature additions to Cumulus Sites, the company’s browser-based Web publishing and file sharing tool, released in March.
New to Cumulus Sites is an option that sends email links that enable users to download requested files at later times so they can close browser windows without having to wait for large-file downloads to complete.
File sharing via Sites has also been improved. Collection links can now be viewed, edited and reused, so users can see which settings were used, and more quickly re-share files. Embargo dates can ensure shared files are not available until specified times, and new social media sharing options make it easy to post files to Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and 12 other social networks.
Flash movies and MP3 files can now be streamed from within Sites, and PDF files can be previewed at full resolution without additional plug-ins or software. An in-browser slideshow feature has been added too.
New Sites interface design flexibility means administrators can disable the filters and category views, show files as lists, choose mouse-click behavior, show file info as tooltips, and more.
New to the Cumulus Native Client is an option that enables users to create and email collection links—a feature previously available only in Sites. This enables users to take advantage of Sites’ easy file sharing while working inside the Native Client.
Support for InDesign CS5 has been added so that Cumulus systems that include InDesign Extended Pack functionality can now parse InDesign files without the need for “tag” files. In addition, referenced images and extracted document text are now associated inside Cumulus with the layout page on which they appear. This means it’s easy to find an individual InDesign page just by choosing an image used on the page, or by searching for text the page contains. It’s also now easy to quickly see all images on a selected InDesign page.
Cumulus 8.1.2 is available free of charge to customers on maintenance contracts, and is recommended for all customers.
