Strapi Cloud Introduces New Developer Plan with Additional Features

The open source headless CMS vendor just announced that it has raised $31 million in Series B funding led by <a href="https://www.crv.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CRV</a> – bringing the company’s total funding to $45 million. Flex Capital and Index Ventures also participated in the round along with new angel investors including former Github CEO, Nat Friedman, Algolia co-founder Nicolas Dessaigne, and Netlify CEO, Matt Billmann Christensen.

Strapi Secures $31 Million in Series B Funding, Plans to Enhance Open Source Headless CMS and Deliver Cloud Platform

"Headless broke the editing experience."
That was one of the many enlightening observations we heard during a press briefing yesterday with Pierre Burgy, CEO of <a href="http://strapi.io/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Strapi.</a> Along with a few sneak peeks of what to expect at the second annual <a href="https://conf.strapi.io/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">StrapiConf</a>, the presentation covered some exciting announcements from one of the world's leading open-source headless content management systems (CMS).
Now in its second year, StrapiConf is the company's free annual conference, focused on its growing community of global users. One of the highlights of the two-day event has been the launch of the beta version of Strapi 4.2 – which features TypeScript support, a "dark mode" screen option, and an in-app marketplace packed with integrations. 
<h2>Enhancing the developer experience with TypeScript</h2>
<a href="https://www.typescriptlang.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TypeScript</a>, one of the most requested features on the Strapi roadmap, now makes the Strapi codebase more reliable, accessible, and easy to refactor for developers. TypeScript provides numerous features, including the addition of syntax to JavaScript – enabling users to catch errors earlier within their editor. TypeScript was also reported as being used by 78% of the <a href="https://2020.stateofjs.com/en-US/technologies/javascript-flavors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2020 State of JS</a> respondents, with 93% saying they would use it again.
"When we developed Strapi v4, we anticipated TypeScript support by introducing an internal typing system," said Alexandre Bodin, CTO, Strapi. "The new TypeScript support relies on that, but it will also be very useful for schema and data migration. This brand new version also introduces a dark mode option for those who prefer dark interfaces. This new functionality also sets the foundations for more advanced and custom themes in the future."

<h2>Strapi Market expands headless and composable ecosystem</h2>
Following the announcement last month of <a href="https://market.strapi.io/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Strapi Market</a>, a marketplace of plugins and integrations, Strapi v4 now adds access directly in the admin panel, giving users the ability to easily find and install v4 plugins in seconds taking advantage of new features while securely accelerating time to production.

During our press briefing, Burgy pointed out that while some customers prefer on-prem, others want cloud hosting without the challenges of managing servers. 
To that end, the company shared a few details about the launch of Strapi Cloud: a new offering based on a platform-as-a-service approach. With Strapi Cloud, users will have a seamless deployment process without having to compromise on Strapi's unique customization capabilities.

Strapi Announces TypeScript Support, Makes Third-Party Plugins Directly Accessible at StrapiConf 2022

<h2>What’s new in Strapi 4?</h2>
New Design System 
Strapi got a complete makeover, primarily around its visual aesthetics and navigation. This includes a refreshed admin UI, which improves accessibility to the admin panel and makes the entire flow more efficient.

Along with the updated admin panel interface, Strapi released the first version of its new <a href="https://design-system.strapi.io/" target="_blank">Strapi Design System</a> with the goal of enabling everyone to extend and customize their Strapi applications with plugins. To ensure design consistency and provide the best experience to users, Strapi created a component library for plugin developers.

In the new design, Strapi focused on making all the pieces of the interface consistent. They also increased the contrast ratio and created elements with adaptive sizes to render the UI more accessible. 
New API to create plugins without pain
Strapi aims to scale its ecosystem and let users choose among a wide variety of high-quality plugins. Conversely, the company also wants to give plugin creators a bigger stage to showcase their work. Overall, Strapi seems focused on giving users more control to customize and integrate with other tools.
Strapi's plugin capabilities have evolved from complex to simplified. For example, in Strapi v3, plugins were loaded based on a file structure, requiring users to configure multiple files. In v4, Strapi took a more programmatic approach, allowing plugins to have their own file structure. Instead of configuring multiple files, plugin developers only need to configure two files at the root of the package:

While v3 plugins won’t be compatible with v4 and will require migration, this is a big leap in overall functionality. 
More powerful REST and GraphQL API
Strapi added new features to its content API such as pagination, a better filtering format, and the ability to choose what relations to load. Structurally, the Content API and the Admin API are now split, providing greater control over each channel. Overall, Strapi seems more invested in enhancing the value of their REST and GraphQL APIs, both of which deliver on its promise as a headless CMS platform. 
<h2>Try Strapi 4 </h2>
There are a number of other noteworthy changes in Strapi v4. To see the complete list, head over to their v4 announcement page. 
Strapi says they will continue supporting v3 and fixing critical bugs for at least the next six months. However, they will stop delivering new features for v3, and they encourage users to upgrade to v4 for all new projects. 
One thing we'll say is that Strapi makes it very easy to get started on its platform. Once <a href="https://docs.strapi.io/developer-docs/latest/setup-deployment-guides/installation/cli.html#preparing-the-installation" target="_blank">Node.js and npm are properly installed</a> on your machine, simply copy and paste the following command line in your terminal to create your first Strapi v4 project:

As noted, Strapi's internationalization will enable users to create and manage content in multiple languages and for multiple locales. A locale may represent not only a language, but also a country to which the exact version of content is related (for example, "en-GB" for English language and Great Britain, or "fr-CA" for French and Canada). This added nuance can hyper-focus the content accuracy of a website or app, allowing organizations to better engage with the right audiences.  
<h2>Personalize and localize content</h2>
Content internationalization is more than just translating text. It’s about customizing messages to target audiences, taking into account their language and geographic location. With Strapi's internationalization, content is displayed for each locale based on content types. For example, if a company has an e-commerce website, they can select which product pages are displayed in French, Portuguese, or Mandarin. This way, when creating a new version, the non-localized fields will already contain content. When editing the entries of non-localized fields, they will automatically be updated in all locales. This can save a lot of time when making updates or adding new versions. </li>
<li>Collaborate effectively with granular permissions: Users can also add granular CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) permissions for each locale to different roles and users, including translators, content editors, marketers, or country managers. Since internationalization is integrated with Strapi's <a href="https://strapi.io/blog/announcing-a-new-draft-and-publish-feature">Draft &amp; Publish system</a>, administrators will have full control of who can access, modify, and publish entries in different locales – making the whole process secure and efficient. </li>

<h2>API updates</h2>
As mentioned, Strapi has updated its API to fetch content by locale. A localizations field is added to every content type when the internationalization feature is activated, so if a developer creates an entry from the API, it’s now possible to specify the locale for which an entry should be created – or create new locales from an existing entry.
