New version of SharePoint 2010's SDK is now available

Over the last few years, content management systems have begun to evolve drastically. Initially, these products were perceived as being a simple means to putting a presence on the web, perhaps for the purpose of selling a product or service. Now, however, the requirements of what I would define as a true content management system have changed rather drastically.
Take a look at the recent release of <a href="http://www.liferay.com">Liferay</a> 6EE for instance.. in my mind, it somewhat speaks to what true content management is, which is why I've been so pleased with its release and the advancements that it brings.
In my opinion, the ideal CMS now blends a mixture of social aspects, workflow, and document management with a sleek presentation layer. No longer are they just systems that exist to stick a page up on the web… they are now platforms that are designed to provide a complete online presence. True, you may not use all of the features that these systems provide, but being given the opportunity to use them if you choose is what matters.
Often, when doing interviews, I ask the question “How do you define a CMS?” and there almost always seems to be a large number of differing opinions (<a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/what-is-a-cms">see some of them here</a>). This, I think, is due to confusion amongst both vendors and users as to how each side uses these products. Only recently have both sides begun to realize the need to engage one another using social media in order for both sides to benefit.
What is a CMS really? Is it a portal? Is it a presentation layer? No. It's all of this and more.
We can only hope that as vendors like Liferay and others start to redefine their products, so to do can we redefine the term and come to a mutual agreement as to what it really means.
Terminology aside, the CMS market is growing and expanding at a rate that promotes stronger competition, higher expectations and (hopefully) lowering costs for the end user.  With the culmination of portals, wikis, blogs, forums and social aspects being combined into these products, we can soon expect a shift in the way websites are used and navigated. More and more companies and organizations are moving away from the “sales type” website and into the “engage the customer” type whereby the site is defined by the users requirements and interactions as opposed to the companies need to sell products or services.
So what does a visitor to your website really want? According to what we are seeing of late, they want easy access to information about your product or service, a fast and effective means of communicating with other users of your products and a way to reach out to you as well if they so desire. They want to be able to spread the word if they are happy or let you know if they are not and they want to do this quickly and efficiently without whittling away their time trying to find out how to do so.
With the advancement in social media and the way we interact with the web, we can most certainly expect more unique and interesting approaches from those companies that are fit to react in a timely manner to these changing needs.

The Evolution of Content Management

Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware is now included in the Windows Web App Gallery and can be installed with the Microsoft Web Platform Installer. Inclusion in the gallery means that millions of Windows users now have easier access to Tiki. Tiki was downloaded over 300 times from the gallery in the first 2 days.
This achievement is the result of work by several Tiki Community members including Philippe Cloutier, Marc Laporte, and Pascal St-Jean, as well as assistance from Microsoft. Work initially began on this project during TikiFest Confoo2010 with Wade Hilmo from Microsoft.

Tiki Now Listed in Windows Web App Gallery

<a href="http://www.ektron.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ektron</a> announced today a redesign of the Ektron Partner portal to support Ektron’s established Partner management methodology for systems integrators, digital agencies, and technology, training and translation partners worldwide.  The portal leverages the Ektron Marketing Optimization and Social Software Suites to obtain and evaluate data that will create more customized Partner solutions.  Within the portal, Partners will have direct access to training resources and supplemental tools for project success, including links to accreditation exams, surveys, and webinars.

Ektron Revamps Partner Portal

In one of the big announcements at this year's eZ conference, eZ Systems revealed some important changes to the way they encourage and integrate innovative contributions to eZ Publish, their open source platform. The eZ Publish core is currently developed solely by eZ Systems engineers.

Now, eZ Systems will offer the eZ Publish Community Project, a version of their open source platform which will open the development process up to long-term, trusted community members. Concurrently, eZ Systems will release eZ Publish Enterprise, a version of its platform which benefits from the accelerated innovation of the community edition, but which will be managed from a dedicated code base and subject to stronger, more rigorous testing. As a supported version of the platform, eZ Publish Enterprise will offer additional value to customers using eZ Publish in a mission critical environment. These changes are set to take effect with the up-coming release scheduled for September 28th, 2010.
By splitting the Community Project and Enterprise versions, eZ Systems aims to increase the value of their offering across the board, from the eZ community to customers and business partners.
eZ Publish Community Project is a great opportunity for long-term partners and community members who have demonstrated their skills and knowledge to have even more influence on the eZ Publish roadmap. The more than 37,000 members of the eZ community will now have the opportunity to directly commit to the eZ Publish Community Project code repository. The Community Project amounts to a new way of contributing to eZ Publish's core in a simple, more efficient manner, and not just by way of Community add-ons. Now more than ever, governance of the eZ community is in the hands of its members.
eZ Publish has traditionally been known for high quality standards. With the strong subscription product support and maintenance available through eZ Systems, and stringent quality assurance standards, eZ Publish has been an enterprise-ready product from the beginning. Now, in order to benefit from the accelerated innovation in the eZ Publish Community Project, without compromising the high quality standards for professional use, eZ is introducing a new edition of its software. eZ Publish Enterprise will be managed in a dedicated code base–a code repository with stronger testing and packaging, featuring integrated Enterprise add-ons available only for eZ Publish Enterprise subscribers.

eZ Systems set to boost innovation while enhancing business value to professional users

Alfresco software, the leader in open source enterprise content management (ECM), has been named to IDG InfoWorld’s annual list of the Best Open Source Software, known as the Bossie awards. This represents Alfresco’s third Bossie inclusion in the last four years and comes on the heels of continued innovation to the company’s content management platform over the last year.
The InfoWorld Bossie awards, which recognize the best business-oriented open source software products, includes products in the categories of open source applications, application development software, platforms and middleware, and networking software.

Improvements in the semantic definitions module The semantic definitions module enable a user to define a semantic ontology. When the ontology has been created, the system creates an object model that reflects the ontology defined. The semantic content is then accessed using the built-in ORM. In this new version of the CMS, the module has been thoroughly updated making it much easier to use, while adding a number of powerful features.
E-commerce module This is the first version of Webnodes CMS that includes the long-awaited e-commerce module. You will now be able to benefit from the semantic content technology in the core framework when creating your e-commerce sites. One of the core design goals behind the e-commerce module (and Webnodes CMS in general) is scalability. The module is designed to work for both small web shops and large e-commerce sites, meaning that it must be quick and easy to use for small projects, but also flexible and extensible enough to work well for more complex needs.
Content links mini viewer. When building websites with semantic content, the structure of a site is not only hierarchical, as in most traditional websites, but the content forms a semantic network, with many different relations between the different content elements. In this new version, a small content links viewer is displayed in the main content module to give editors a better overview of what the current content node is related to, without opening the full content links browser.
Rounded corners and borders on images Webnodes CMS already has an industry leading image handling technology built into the system, but this release includes a number of useful additions and improvements. Rounded corners can now be applied to images for a fraction of the effort normally required. The image handling engine can now also add borders to images.
“This release contains a number of improvements that both end-users and our implementation partners will benefit from”, said Ole Gulbrandsen, CTO of Webnodes. “We’re experiencing a lot of interest in our semantic content technology at the moment. Magnolia CMS wins Swiss Open source award

Georg-Christian Pranschke from http://www.sensepost.com/ discovered a vulnerability in Elgg that could potentially allow SQL injection attacks using crafted URLs or POSTs. Versions 1.7.3 and 1.6.3 correct this and are highly recommended for all Elgg users.
1.7.3 also includes additional bugfixes for problems found in 1.7.2:

<li>“Edit details” and “Edit profile icon” only show up on user's own profile.</li>
