Six Apart, the company responsible for the producing the once popular Movable Type, has been acquired by advertising network, <a href="http://www.videoegg.com">Video Egg</a>.  Six Apart has continued to produce Movable Type over the years but has lost an enormous chunk of it's once strong hold of the blogging/content management market. Most of this due to the introduction of WordPress.
The final straw for Six Apart and <a href="http://www.movabletype.com">Movable Type</a> in my mind came with the introduction of Movable Type 5.. a product that basically took what was good about Movable Type and threw it out the window in a weak attempt to redesign their product and give it a similar look and feel to rival WordPress.
It's been obvious for some time that even the developers of Movable Type were displeased with the 5.0 product line and to prove their displeasure (whether they openly say so or not) they launched <a href="http://openmelody.org/">Melody</a> which is based on MT4.
There is no real mention of the future of Movable Type, they have been careful not to say one way or the other what will happen but considering their lack of interest in the MT product and their huge focus on the media end of their business, I think it best to recommend that if you are on the MT platform, you jump ship while you can.
Not all will agree with me on this one and I'm sure some will be upset but I think one must be realistic in this type of circumstance.

It's great for Six Apart that now they have a chance to build upon their media business but I feel it should also be a major concern for those using their publishing platforms.

Serendipity (also known as s9y)
Serendipity is an excellent blogging platform and when it comes to functionality, available plugins and stability, is quite a powerful system.  It doesn't stop at blogging, however. Serendipity is a very powerful CMS as well and can (and should) be used for other projects ranging from publishing to serving up your business' website.
Support is excellent and the developers are quick to (safely) adapt your requests which is a rarity in this type of market.

<h3>Pixie</h3>
Pixie is a visually attractive, small and simple to use CMS that has been growing well the last few years. It's easy to install, a pleasant experience to use and very stable. Produced by Toggle, there aren't a huge number of plugins and themes but there are plenty to get the job done.
This is a fun system to use and we recommend you give it a whirl and see if it fits your needs. There is a demo available that you can play with, without installing anything.
Some features include:

<li>Easy to use installer that gives you options as to the site you wish to install. Looking to blog, select the blog package and the CMS will be customized for that purpose. Need a small business site, same applies.</li>
<li>Clean URL's and very good search engine friendly coding allow this CMS to perform well on your favourite search engine.</li>
<li>CSS themes – Pixie makes use of CSS for it's themes which opens up the door to thousands of freely available templates.</li>

<h3>glFusion</h3>
glFusion is based on Geeklog, which is one of the oldest blogging and article publishing CMS available. Geeklog is a great system and well supported but the team at glFusion have taken things a step farther and provided very adaptable themes, extra plugins and very solid support. In our opinion, they have done a great job taking Geeklog to the next level and we suggest you try their product out if you haven't. It's free of course.

There are very few things that cannot be done with Textpattern. It takes a little getting used to but once you try it, it's hard to use anything else.
Not only is this system incredibly small but it's very, very fast. The admin interface can easily be themed and designing a system exactly the way you want is not difficult. There are plenty of plugins and the TXP community is a very active one.

The bsd-licensed HWIOS (<a href="http://hwios.org">http://hwios.org</a>) project was started rougly a year ago to provide an easy-to-use web-UI to the Opensimulator virtual world platform, which is quite hard to control for non-technical users. It was built from ideas and flaws that were gathered and discovered from it's php predecessor WiXTD. HWIOS is a python CMS that's built on top of frameworks like Twisted, Django, JQuery and friends. It's a rather unconventional CMS because it relies solely on XHR and websockets for data(JSON) transport; hence it doesn't use page refreshing.
The CMS offers distributed service management with javascript websocket consoles, an integrated webdav server for sharing Opensim archive files from several servers, a simple JSON chat-app, Opensim region management through a TMS mapping service with Openlayers map controls, and customized simulator configurations. The goal of the project is not exclusively to deliver only a web-ui for Opensim, but for HWIOS to become a general-use collaborative package for both e-learning and e-work purposes.
It's architecture is well suitable to provide realtime collaborative text-features and notification systems in today's applications like a wiki, the forum or news apps. It uses a two-way JSON-RPC router for easy delivering of data from client-server and vice-versa.
Another thing that's interesting to implement is the html5 canvas tag, that can be used for shared whiteboards, visualisation of data structures, and more. The amount of features in HWIOS is still limited because of a lack of developers. The current focus is to finish the wiki system, refactor and comment the code and add internationalisation. Developers who are interested can check out the code from the git repository.

An introduction to HWIOS

The seventh alpha release of what will become Drupal 7 has been announced.From the announcement:

Reading, UK – Atex announces that Verlag Nürnberger Presse, the Nuremberg, Germany, media company, is live on the Atex Polopoly Web Content Management system. The go-live was part of the relaunch of nordbayern.de, the online presence of “Nürnberger Nachrichten” and the “Nürnberger Zeitung”.
Verlag Nürnberger Presse chose the Atex Polopoly system because of its robustness, flexibility and scalability. The implementation includes a close integration between Polopoly and the Atex editorial system allowing for seamless exchange of content between print and online editorial teams.
“One of our goals was the close cooperation of print and online,” said Werner Wittmann, Project Coordinator of the nordbayern.de relaunch. “The integration with the Atex editorial system we already use for the print production allows the print editors to put their content directly online and thus permits us to introduce modern convergent ways of working.”
The media company also enjoys that Polopoly can efficiently serve all digital publication channels with available applications for community services and personalization.
“The system is designed to cover all our current and future demands in the digital world,” says Alexander Maintok, technical project manager for the system implementation. Under the motto “Regional Competence in the Global Network”, nordbayern.de focuses on local and regional news coverage. Using the Atex Web CMS, the website gives readers the ability to search pages and articles using geo-codes presented on maps.
The Atex Polopoly system has helped Verlag Nürnberger Presse add other services that are accessible through the newly designed uniform navigation. These include an event database with information about all the major events of the region; an area for regional restaurants that integrates the largest Gastro database of northern Bavaria; and an expanded sports section with results of leagues in Northern Bavaria, game reports and Bundesliga betting games.

Leading digital asset management vendor, Daydream, have announced a public beta release of their .NET open source digital asset management system, FocusOPEN under an Affero General Public (AGPL) open source licence. Offering a public release marks a strategic change for Daydream, who have been providing high-end enterprise digital asset management software to corporations worldwide since 1995.
“Although traditionally we have concentrated solely on the enterprise tier of the DAM market, we found increasing demand for our software and services from smaller businesses and creative agencies. We always offered our software with an open source licence, but until now we avoided a public distribution because our service delivery operations were oriented towards the needs of our enterprise clients. Therefore, prior to a full public release, we made significant investments into our support infrastructure to ensure that the user experience is a positive one.” said Ralph Windsor, Managing Director of Daydream.
“The Open Source (AGPL) Edition of FocusOPEN provides a ‘tried-and-tested’ fully featured DAM system derived from our existing enterprise product that users can download from our website without charge. It has many of the features of its enterprise counterpart such as a dedicated asset transcoding server, embedded metadata support, multi-branding, full text search, faceted search, taxonomies, asset permissions and workflow for usage management as well as ingestion.” Windsor continues.
FocusOPEN is the only fully supported .NET open source DAM system available and promises to radically shake up this segment of the digital asset management market, which has hitherto been characterised by a limited selection of expensive and proprietary solutions. Daydream have set up a dedicated product website with a range of community support facilities.
