Cloud CMS – Cloud Content Management for Mobile Apps

After a few months of alpha and beta versions the first stable version of Elxis CMS 4.0, codename Nautilus, is here. This version includes a number of bug fixes, improvements, library updates, new interface languages as well as a few new features.
Along with the stable version an update patch for all beta versions was also released and you can download it from <a href="http://www.elxis-downloads.com/">EDC</a>. Since version 4.0 rev1358 Elxis has multilingual XML parameters and a new configuration option named SITELANGS. This new option allows you to limit the displayed languages in Elxis frontend only to specific ones (the default option is to use all available languages). With the release of the stable version we strongly encourage you to download and use Elxis 4.0 instead of the old series 2009.3.

People's Choice Winner for Best Free CMS is...

First off, I wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to participate in this years awards. As you may know, we have to distinct categories this year, People's Choice and Critic's Choice. For the People's Choice awards, the CMS with the most legitimate votes as of midnight last night will be the winner. I will be announcing these shortly. At the moment, I am going through the votes and removing duplicates, votes from fake accounts, etc.
For the Critic's Choice portion of the awards, CMS Critic will be choosing one system from each of the categories that will receive our recommendation from this site in their specific category. We will not be considering this winner based on the voting that occurred but will be selecting this winner separately. The Critic's Choice Award will be based on how we think the system handles the needs of the end user, how flexible it is, how innovative the product is, how responsive to the user the community is and more.
We will begin announcing the winners of the People's Choice portion of our awards at 4pm MST today. Stay tuned for updates and thank you for making this a successful and interactive year. We've been thrilled with the response from the community.

feindura has released version 2.0 of their CMS. feindura is a flat file based CMS, which is made for small websites and web-designers which want to give their clients a neat and simple interface to edit their web site.
This is a major update and brings a complete new interface and features like plugins and add-ons to feindura.

feindura is a pure content deliver CMS, which means it is not possible to edit the web sites layout in the feindura backend. This way the web-designer is able to determine the layout, give his clients as much freedom as they need (to add pages and categories), without overwhelming them with too much options. Often CMS add more and more options, which make them very flexible for the user but hard to grasp for non-tech beginners.
Implementation
The pages created in feindura are solely add to the web site through an PHP class, which makes it on the one hand very flexible in how the layout can look like, but on the other hand prevent feindura to mess with the layout itself.
This way its easy to convert any static HTML/CSS website with a few lines of code by adding for example:

Accrisoft Announces Freedom CMS 8.2

We have been fortunate enough to be first to receive a video preview of the features that will be available in Hannon Hill's upcoming Cascade Server 7.2 release. Yesterday, they released  Cascade Server 7.2 beta for those interested in testing.
One of the improvements to the user interface is the ability to drag and drop webpages within the website structure. A user with this ability activated will be able to drag and drop a webpage or other asset into a different folder on their site, and upon doing so, that user will be presented with additional options for renaming and republishing that webpage in its new location.
In addition to drag and drop moving, there are several other user interface features included in the beta release of Cascade Server 7.2, such as automatic saving of drafts in the background of the application, an updated format editing user interface, clickable labels enabling easier selection of options throughout different parts of the system, auto-complete site switching for navigating between sites in Cascade Server, an easy way for administrators to check which effective abilities a user has for a given site, and preview functionality to the format editing interface.
“Improving the user experience in Cascade Server has been our focus for quite some time now,” emphasized Hannon Hill Lead Software Engineer Mike Strauch. “There are few things more frustrating than a powerful piece of software that is difficult to use, which is why I love the improvements we've made to format editing and saving of drafts; things feel much more seamless.”

As I've worked with clients over the years, their involvement with their own website has changed. When I first started, they wanted very little to do with updating the website. More recently, they want to edit their content, change the design, add pages, and more. With this change, the use of a CMS that works for the individual client has become paramount.
The variety of CMS's available spans from content-only editing to the ability to edit the entire website – including content and design. It begs the questions, “What is the right CMS?” The better question may be, “what does the end user want to do?”
Some CMS's are ‘plugged in' after the fact. The website is already designed and the CMS gives ‘behind-the-scenes' access to edit content areas and sometimes, to edit design and manage pages. Other CMS's require you to start using their CMS from the beginning, designing the site and adding content within their CMS.
Let's take a look at some of the questions to ask when it comes to selecting a CMS from the end user perspective.
<h2>How much control does the end user want?</h2>
I think this may need to be balanced with the question “How much technical knowledge does the user have?” If the technical knowledge is ‘I know how to use Word' – you'll want to stick to a CMS that offers a similar editor with access to only the content areas. If they want to do more – change the design of the site, add pages, etc. – then those options, along with their level of expertise – will help define which CMS works best for them. I have also found that sometimes it's a matter of educating a client on what is involved in updating a website and what's involved in keeping consistency across the website.
<h2>Can the end-user manage the pages on their website?</h2>
Some CMS options are edit-only. Others, let you add pages, move pages, and delete pages. Although this has the potential of introducing more options than our client really understands, many CMS's let you add a page template that matches your current design. Be aware that along with this comes the need to also edit the menus. Again, many CMS's have a friendly intuitive interface to manage menus, as well as pages.
<h2>Can one easily add images, links, pdfs, etc?</h2>
Most CMS editors let you easily add assets to your website – whether it's images, videos, sound clips, pdfs, or other types of files. The issue becomes (especially from a developer's viewpoint) the organization of these assets. Some CMS's let you specify where to store the assets, others have a central repository where all assets are uploaded. So a second question might be how are the assets stored?
<h2>Can individuals be given different roles/permissions?</h2>
Will the client have multiple users accessing the CMS to update the website? If so, will they need access to only certain page/sections of the website? Or, maybe the client wants only designated users to add content, and other users only to be able to edit content already on the website. Many CMS's have options to assign roles and permissions for these types of scenarios.
<h2>Is it easy to use the editor?</h2>
Most people know Word, or a similar word processing program. I've found the editor within a CMS system needs to look pretty much like Word. Again, I have found that when a client wants to edit their content it includes educating the client on certain aspects of editing website content vs editing a Word document. The two main questions I get when it comes to a client updating their content is ‘why can't I place this picture where I want it?' and ‘how can I make this go down just one line instead of two?” There will be certain aspects we'll need to educate the client, but overall the editor should be very intuitive and be a similar as possible to a word processing program.
<h2>Can forms be easily added to my website?</h2>
Some CMS's include a form builder or a form wizard to easily add forms to a website. Additionally, some CMS's have the option to include storing the form information in a database or spreadsheet. Also, be aware that if a particular CMS doesn't have an option to build forms, there are online options for doing the same thing. One example of this is <a href="http://wufoo.com">Wufoo</a>. You an build a form on their interactive website and use it on your website.
<h2>Can I add social media?</h2>
Some CMS's lets one easily integrate with social media. They may have a widget or plugin that easily lets you add twitter feeds or facebook posts. Or, they may have icons you can easily add to link to your various social communities.
<h2>Is the admin interface easy to use?</h2>
This one can potentially easily overwhelm the end-user. If they see way too many options when accessing the admin interface, it can become difficult for them to see the easy options in the midst of the complexity. Not all CMS's have admin interfaces, but for those that do, it's best if it is a simple admin interface that shows only the options the end-user needs to use, or the admin interface can be customized to show the client only what they need to know. This can also be a protection to prevent them from doing things they really don't want to do.
This is not a complete list by all means. Other questions may include:
<ul>
<li>Will the CMS allow my website to grow with my business?</li>
<li>Does the CMS offer analytics or integrate easily with other analytic options?</li>
<li>Is there a good user community where one can go to find help?</li>
</ul>
Having posed all these questions, it's still sometimes difficult to know which CMS to use, or if it's even wise to give clients that much control. I'm happy to give some clients that kind of control and with other clients I cringe when they ask to be able to update their website. I love the idea of clients being able to update their website, but I'm not fond of the idea that clients could potentially really mess up their website. Maybe that's where selecting the right CMS comes in. I'm curious what steps you have found to help you define what CMS to use and how you decide how much control to give or not give your clients.

What to Look for in a CMS from an End-User Perspective

The Tiki Software Community Association is proud to announce the immediate availability of the latest releases of the Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware Long Term Support (LTS) versions: Tiki 6.8 LTS and 9.2 LTS.
The 9.2 update includes more than 500 code changes, focusing on fixes and improvements such as:

<li>Introduction of the Tiki Server Check, allowing users to test their server environment.</li>
<li>Automatic generation of site maps</li>
<li>Customized formatting for menu labels through wiki syntax and plugins</li>
<li>Improvements to the user registration process</li>
<li>Security fixes</li>

The 6.8 update includes the security patch only.
The Tiki 9.x series is a Long Term Support (LTS) version, and will be supported until November 2015 (or upon the release of Tiki 16). Tiki admins are highly encouraged to upgrade to this latest version as the 8.x series is now end-of-life (EOL) and is no longer supported. The Tiki 6.x series remains LTS through 2014.
