CrownPeak’s newly announced Cloud Content Management Platform will make Digital Asset Management (DAM) functions available as a service.

Since its launch in 2001, CrownPeak Technology has provided a software-as-a-service open cloud platform for Enterprise Web Experience Management. CrownPeak is positioned as a “Visionary” in 2014 Magic Quadrant for Web Content Management (WCM) by Gartner, Inc.

With this new DAM solution, content editors can centrally manage the brand experience from a single place, with changes published to any webpage using the asset. Also, digital marketing teams can deliver a consistent experience through streaming and standardized brand compliance.

Let's take a closer look at what CrownPeak is now offering.

Streamlining Asset Curation & Editing

CrownPeak Technology, the provider of the enterprise’s only open cloud platform for Web Experience Management, has released a new Digital Asset Management (DAM) offering, available now to its enterprise customers and digital agency partners. The company’s unique DAM service makes global management of digital media assets across all of an organization’s web properties quick and easy.

Digital marketers choose CrownPeak’s multi-tenant cloud content management platform to create rich, personalized web experiences for customers. As part of any brand’s global website management effort, CrownPeak DAM eliminates many of the extra steps normally required to manage, organize, edit, deploy and regulate digital media files. The service provides the following benefits to enterprise marketing and agency client website teams:

Asset Curation. Organize and categorize digital assets at will, then easily police where they are deployed, regardless of the source content’s location.

Standardized Editing. Normalize image editing functions across all global web properties, supporting collaboration and taming inefficient DAM workflows.

Increased Control. Unify brand identity, image quality, asset versioning, and compliance across the enterprise in one comprehensive cloud tool.

A Unified Cloud View of All Digital Assets

CrownPeak’s DAM solution is able to openly access and manipulate digital media assets stored in a variety of third-party marketing tools such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Sharepoint, Box, and Veeva.

This means that website development and management teams tasked with creating better online customer experiences on a global basis can more easily enforce a unified, consistent brand look and feel – no matter where their digital assets are stored.

CrownPeak's Chief Product Officer, Carl Sutter, made these comments upon the release of CrownPeak DAM:

“The prevalence of un-integrated and niche DAM products in the market left unaddressed a number of key challenges felt by digital marketers. CrownPeak DAM helps eliminate errors in what has traditionally been a very inefficient team workflow for asset management. Most DAM offerings don’t sync directly with the CMS. With our cloud content management platform, the more backend digital asset repositories that integrate via our open API or pre-built connectors, the more optimized a brand’s entire DAM effort can become.”

Meanwhile, Paul Juedes, senior director of enterprise digital marketing at CoreLogic, made these comments:

“Digital marketing teams work feverishly to feed each prospect’s ravenous appetite for digital content. A cloud content management platform with an integrated DAM is now a necessity. Solutions like CrownPeak DAM can streamline and simplify the way organizations manage their digital assets in a central, secure way. Moreover, a good DAM implementation is a strategic competitive advantage. It allows organizations to meet and exceed every customer’s expectations for a great content-driven experience with brand consistency.”

CrownPeak Digital Asset Management Features

Designed to empower web content authors and editors, CrownPeak DAM comprises the following features and functions:

Access

CrownPeak DAM tracks and organizes digital assets across the enterprise with native platform integration to best-of-breed data and content sources where digital assets may be stored. It manages the seamless flow of image files, audio, and video – independent of their location. CrownPeak is also compatible with third-party storage, enterprise content management and document management applications.

Organization

CrownPeak DAM allows users to filter and classify digital assets by tagging attributes such as file type and meta-data tags (e.g. “product photos”) or by creating named collections (e.g. “Fall campaign”). Assets can be browsed, searched, moved, and manipulated across the entire website portfolio from a single interface – eliminating asset redundancy. Collections allow web teams to provision special access in support of cross-team collaboration.

Editing

CrownPeak DAM provides a unified, intuitive set of tools for image editing across all websites, efficiently eliminating unnecessary image rework. The Image Optimizer feature creates pre-packaged, optimized images for mobile, tablet or web with a few clicks. Finalized images can then be quickly and consistently published across all global websites. Any saved changes roll out automatically on production sites that use the image as well as to its original location.

Previewing

CrownPeak DAM powers a rich media preview of still image thumbnails and full web pages with adjustable sizing.

Enforcement

CrownPeak DAM empowers brand owners to enforce compliance of digital assets with definitive or optimal quality standards, supported by layered security and rich team workflow built right into the CrownPeak platform. Collect and tag assets by expiration date or copyright, for example. CrownPeak can also integrate its capabilities with third-party digital rights management and governance monitoring tools.

Getting your hands on CrownPeak DAM will be easy, thanks to it being fully integrated with CrownPeak’s cloud content management platform and is available immediately with the click of a button.

CrownPeak DAM is an optional offering that CrownPeak activates for customers and comes packaged as part of the Advanced Platform edition, which exisiting customers will be glad to hear. The company will make pricing information available to interested parties.

From the Forum: Internet's Best Looking Websites & More!

The Concrete5 team has been busy recently, releasing version 5.7, before updating it twice. They've also released some developer resources for anybody wanting to delve into the code.

Concrete5 is an open-source content management system with a reputation for flexibility and its strong community.

Version 5.7 brought about a myriad of updates, and Concrete5 has continued to add to it since. The result? A long, long list of new stuff for Concrete5 users to enjoy.

“Deep Changes” with Concrete5 5.7

Concrete5 5.7 has enhancements for a long list of areas. Users will find that content editing, theme customization, and so forth have all been optimized.

Regarding the release, Concrete5 CTO Andrew Embler had this to say:

“For the first time in 6 years, we’ve decided to not put backward compatibility first and foremost. We really wanted to have a clean slate, so we could embrace ideas that involved deep changes to the system.”

Here's a breakdown of what's new with Concrete5.

Editing

A completely new layout engine allows for inline editing of content, layouts and style customization. Blocks can be dragged into the page and easily rearranged.

Inline content editing uses the Redactor editor, a beautiful editor with deep integration to concrete5, and full bootstrap 3 interface integration.

The Dashboard user interface is completely updated. Navigating it is much easier, and the interface is much more attractive.

concrete5’s user interface is now powered by Bootstrap 3.

Themes and Blocks

Concrete5 now ships with the all-new and better looking Elemental theme.

The concrete5 Dashboard, main toolbar and Elemental theme are all fully responsive.

Themes can optionally refer to grid frameworks, and can have full grid support built-in. Layouts have been substantially updated to support these grid frameworks (as well as be fully responsive.)

Pages and Architecture

Page types and page templates are now two separate concepts. Page types refer to pages as objects – Blog Entry, Empty Page, Project, Product – and page templates refer to templates that actually appear in themes. The same page type can be run in multiple themes.

concrete5’s Composer is now a very flexible form builder that can route attributes and blocks into different page templates. Each page type has its own custom instance of Composer.

A Feed Object is available in the Dashboard (and created through the Page List block), giving Page Lists the ability to create RSS feeds that are permalinked.

Files

A completely new image editor is now built-in. Resize and crop images, and add filters.

File manager thumbnails are now completely extensible. Multiple thumbnails at different breakpoints can power the picture tag in a theme that supports it.

File storage locations are now pluggable. An adapter for Amazon S3 is coming shortly.

Conversations

Conversations are now built-in, with the Conversations block replacing the Guestbook block. Conversations is a reusable, object-oriented way to build conversations throughout a site, and use the same system for powering a guestbook as ultimately powering a forum. Conversations features threading, asynchronous loading, file attachments, spam filtering, flagging, rating and more.

And that's not even half of it. To find out more about Concrete5 5.7, check out the release notes.

Developer Resources, Versions 5.7.0.1 & 5.7.0.3

Since the release of version 5.7, Concrete5 has rolled out some developer resources, along with two patches in the form of versions 5.7.0.1 and 5.7.0.3.

That's a lot of activity to keep up with, so here are all the highlights, along with the download link to the very latest Concrete5 release.

Concrete 5.7 Architecture Video (Developer Resource)

Feature Updates

Broke out debug settings into two separate settings: Display errors and Error Detail level (message vs. stack trace.) Defaulting to show error messages in a nice way (not the detailed stack trace).

Behavioral Improvements

Helpful error notice for users attempting to use topics attribute without a topic tree created

Improved page list and page, users and file date filtering with time zone support

Help overlay in dashboard starts lower, doesn’t obscure default buttons.

Improved My Account Navigation

Page drafts no longer say “Warning, this is a system page” when you try and delete them.

Miscellaneous Improvements

Form submissions “today” now respects user’s local time zone

Fixed some untranslated strings and dates

Added detail error message when attempting to use grid methods on areas in themes that don’t support them.

Fallback to GD if Imagemagick is older than version 6.2.9 (which previously triggered errors)

Context menu on sitemap, file manager and more moves to the right if there isn’t enough room to display top or bottom

I told you it was a long list.

The Concrete5 blog has all of this information, and much more. Yep, this long list isn't even complete, as the bug fixes are plentiful.

Kentico 8.1 Combines Greater Ease and Performance with New LinkedIn and SharePoint Integration

PortlandLabs, the company behind Concrete5 CMS, has released new tools and pricing to serve enterprise organizations that want an easy way to edit their website.

Thanks to a simple point-and-click interface and editing toolbar, Concrete5 has become a popular choice for users who want a CMS that helps manage websites easily. And now, enterprise users can get in on the action.

Let's take a look at what larger companies can now enjoy.

Internationalization to Centralization

PortlandLabs have outlined four key tools that make up this enterprise release:

Multi-Step Content Workflow: Enforces custom multi-step, multi-path content approval steps while maintaining concrete5's intuitive editing experience.

Internationalization: Adds collaboration tools to increase efficiencies for a team managing a multilingual localized web presence.

Centralized Digital Asset Management: Creates a single source of truth for data that can be repurposed across print, mobile, and multiple micro-sites.

HTML Exporter: Takes a complete copy of a website’s latest content and creates a set of files that can be hosted on any web server or CDN.

Regarding this release, Franz Maruna, PortlandLabs CEO, made these comments:

“These tools, along with our support SLA’s, dedicated hosting, and services really provide a rich set of solutions for organizations considering concrete5 for their web presence. There’s no reason that the user experience of web builders like SquareSpace and Wix can’t be enjoyed by larger organizations with complex needs. With concrete5, we’ve eliminated the gap between publishing and editing for mission critical business websites.”

Many organizations have already used Concrete5 to build public-facing marketing sites and secure intranets, but these new tools will undoubtedly make those projects easier and more powerful.

To accommodate larger websites, Concrete5 boasts a broad permissions model that lets site administrators control access down to individual parts of specific pages on the site. Every change is tracked with versions that can be rolled back.

Yet, Concrete5 users enjoy simplicity more than anything else. Their straightforward user interface and easily accessible editing mode is a stark contrast to the average enterprise CMS. So, it will be interesting to see the response.

What's ahead for Open Source CMS?

Have you ever wanted to try the new, popular blogging platform Ghost? Today, you are in luck. If you don't want to test out their hosted version, you can download and set up Ghost quickly and easily on your own hosting solution.

I happen to use Servint and today, I'm going to show you how to to set up Ghost on it in a few short, simple steps.

Servint offers the perfect environment to install Ghost (the new blogging platform) on.

I'm going to walk you through the process quickly and easily with a number of straightforward steps. Let's get started.

First, log into your WHM as root and navigate to Service Configuration >> Apache Configuration >> Reserved IPs Editor. From here, choose an IP address you wish to reserve for Ghost and click the checkmark in the Reserved box. This will release the IP address from Apache when you click save.

Once this is complete, you'll need to assign the IP address to the domain you wish to use. If you haven't set up your domain within WHM as of yet, you'll need to Create a New Account for the domain. You can do so at Account Functions » Create a New Account.

Once the account is created, it's time to assign the IP address you reserved to the domain you wish to use. To get started, go to Account Information » List Accounts. Find the domain in question and click on the + sign beside it. This will give you a number of buttons and options. Click on Change IP Address. You will be presented with a dropdown box of IP addresses, find the one that you reserved and select it. Click save. It may take upwards of 24 hours for the changes to propagate globally so if you cannot access the domain on that newly assigned IP address quite yet, don't worry, it will work soon. In the interim, you can access your ghost install via your IP address when we are done.

The next step will be to FTP into your account using the domain (or IP address you just assigned) and the credentials you specified when you created the new account in step 2. You'll want to have downloaded the Ghost source code from http://ghost.org and extracted the file. Now, connect using an FTP client and upload the contents of this folder into your www directory. Do not upload the ghost folder itself, just the contents (ie: folders and files within the zip).

Now it's time to SSH into your server and get things set up. If you do not have root access via SSH to your server, you can submit a request to ServInt via the support portal and they will activate it for you straight away. Do be careful, however, as root access to your server enabled can be dangerous if you do not have a strong password. In the hands of the wrong person, they can wipe all of your stuff and cause some serious damage. Once you have root access, ssh into your box using a program such as Putty or something similar.

Now, we're going to install node and npm. Thankfully, ServInt uses CentOS and already has the right repository set up so that makes it easy. Run the command
yum install npm --enablerepo=epel
. This will begin the installation process. When complete, run
npm -v
and
node -v
and you should get back version numbers for each. If you do, you are ready for the next step.

From within your www (or public html) folder, run the command
npm install --production
. This will install Ghost and get it ready for your site.

Now, the first time you run Ghost it will copy the config.example.js file to config.js. Personally, I did this myself and then made the necessary modifications, so go ahead and run the command
cp config.example.js config.js
. Now you'll need to edit this file, so run
nano config.js
.

With the file open in the editor, change all instances of
http://my-ghost-blog.com
to your own domain. You will find it listed twice, once under Development and once under Production. Now change all instances of
127.0.0.1
to your IP address (the one you assigned to your domain) and all instances of
2368
to
80
. Now hit
ctrl-x
and
s
to save.

Now, in my instance, I didn't want to have to keep a ssh session open to run Ghost so I decided to do so using forever. Forever is an app that will monitor your node.js (Ghost) session and keep it running. If it stops for some reason it will restart it for you automatically. To install forever run these commands:
npm -g install forever
.

Once installed, you can start your new Ghost installation. The first time you start it, set the environment to production using this command:
NODE_ENV=production forever start index.js
. Once you've started it, you can leave the shell and access your new Ghost installation on either your domain or the IP address followed by /ghost in your browser. The first time you access Ghost, you'll need to set up a user. Once done, you'll be up and running. To stop your installation in the future, SSH into your server and run
forever stop index.js
from within the www directory for your account (ie: /home/domain/www/).

If you are interested in trying out these steps, grab an inexpensive VPS or hosting solution from ServInt.

That's it. Best of luck, hope it helps and if you get stuck or have questions, let me know in the comments below.

Cheers,
Mike

As you may know, I was in attendance at the Magnolia Conference last month in Basel, Switzerland and was asked to participate in a roundtable called “Mastering Customer Experience Management.”

Magnolia captured this on video and did a great job of putting it together so I thought I'd share for those who may have missed it or were not in attendance. This roundtable discussion features myself, Tim Walters from Digital Clarity Group, Janus Boye, Adriaan Bloem and Christopher Justice from Magnolia.
