SimpleCMS is a product developed by Redmode Ltd that is available for those developers / designers who are looking to add a simple, easy to use and brandable CMS to their existing HTML based websites. It can also be used and easily set up by the average user without the need of a designer/developer. Today, we're going to take you through our SimpleCMS Review.
SimpleCMS is available for free or you can purchase an upgraded edition which provides additional functionality for around $80/year.
Adding a site to the system is very straight forward and is done through the following interface:

Once added, the site is instantly accessible from the CMS and you can begin to define which areas you wish to be editable.

Doing so is painless and requires you simply hovering over the area and clicking to instantly define it as an editable area. Once done, content can be edited, pictures changed, etc.  SimpleCMS makes heavy use of Ajax and load times are quick and the system feels responsive.
Once you've defined each of your areas, you click on the Edit Content tab to move to edit mode.

You are now able to simple select one of the icons and instantly edit your content in place.

The rich text editor, shown above, works wonderfully and can also be modified to include additional buttons and functionality (we'll show that in a moment).
Adding and modifying users is very simple. There are a few permissions you can modify along with the accessible buttons for the rich text editor.

Last but not least, branding. It's as easy as adding your logo and making a few small changes.

Conclusion
I found the system to be, as the name suggests, simple. It has everything the average user needs to maintain their site in an easy and effective manner. Performance wise, there was very little load time involved when moving between functions in the system. I found the editor and the ability to modify it to be refreshing and handy. I enjoyed using the product and the interface is visually appealing.
What would I change? Perhaps toss in some statistics functionality for the upgraded price and you've pretty much got the perfect setup for the average joe. Good job guys!

Kentico Sets a New Standard for Customer Experience Management

Today was Day Two of Liferay's West Coast Symposium 2011 here in Anaheim, California and it began with one of the most interesting talks I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. The topic? “The History of Open Source” by freelance journalist, Dana Blankenhorn.

Liferay’s West Coast Symposium – Day Two – #LRWCS2011

With an estimated attendance of 300+ people, this year's West Coast Symposium has seen tremendous growth from the previous year.
Day One of their symposium started off with a great keynote from Chief Executive Officer, Bryan Cheung in which he highlighted some of Liferay's successes such as their recent presence in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals where they were positioned in the Leader's Quadrant.

Following a full day of talks, <a href="http://www.cignex.com/">CIGNEX Datamatics</a>, a Liferay Partner, put on an amazing after party with a beer tasting from the <a href="http://widmerbrothers.com/">Widmer Brothers Brewery</a> in Portland, Oregon.
I've got to hand it to the guys at Cignex, they put on one heck of a party and it was an absolute blast. Perhaps it's because I'm Canadian but I can't think of any other type of party that could possibly top a beer tasting one. Oh and thank you for the Pretzel necklaces as well guys, good idea!

The <a href="http://impresscms.org">ImpressCMS</a> team have announced the release of ImpressCMS 1.3, the community-oriented web platform. ImpressCMS is a web content management platform with a focus on community.
The goals defined for the newest version of ImpressCMS were clear : complete overhaul of the core to improve speed, improve efficiency and improve the architecture. No new functionalities were planned.
With the release of ImpressCMS 1.3, all these goals were met, with pre-production sites showing remarkable improvements in speed and memory use. Also, the totally refactored ImpressCMS Persistable Framework will make core and module development considerably easier.
What's new in ImpressCMS 1.3:

The structure of the code has seen a major overhaul, in order to comply with the current best practices for PHP5. This makes the code easier to write, and easier to maintain.
Facilitated module development
By using the automatic inclusion of required files, module developers can think about improving their module, and not about handling file administration.
Module updates
Many modules have received compatibility updates to work with this release. Other modules have been written specifically to take advantage of the improved codebase of version 1.3.

ImpressCMS 1.3 Released

<a href="http://www.elcom.com.au/">Elcom</a> has announced version 7.5 of their content management system and with it, some new social functionality has been integrated.
As well as enhancements to key features within the system; Elcom are excited to be launching an enhanced layer of Social 
functionality across the system.

The new social layer provides intuitive and easy to use Facebook like functionality, giving users the ability to publish status updates, share information, comment and invite colleagues or members. This builds on the elcomCMS’s existing social features which include blogs, forums and wikis.
Commenting on the development, Anthony Milner, Elcom’s Product Director said “Bringing FaceBook like functionality to the enterprise concerns some HR teams but in reality an effective and well managed social layer can significantly enhance productivity through improved communication and collaboration. It can also reduce the need for formal meetings, expose hidden expertise and improve communication across geographically dispersed teams. ”

In addition to the Facebook like Social features, Elcom have also introduced a framework to easily integrate external content such as YouTube. This allows authors to automatically extract and store video metadata as indexed objects without the need to actually store the video asset on their site. The content can then be integrated with the elcomCMS’s taxonomy engine, dynamic content widgets and search. This provides a quick and powerful way to enhance existing content with external content; and reduces the duplication and maintenance often associated with managing multiple content sources
For marketing and campaign managers, Elcom have also integrated in version 7.5, the outstanding email marketing software, Campaign Monitor. This is a third-party online email marketing tool that lets marketers send “professional and engaging email campaigns, track results and manage subscribers”, to provide powerful email campaign management.
Elcom’s Marketing Manager, Lee-Sia Yuen added “This is great release for marketing and communication professionals. The email marketing, rich media and social capability will help to remove noise and improve communication channels between clients, prospects, channels and even internally”

Elcom 7.5 brings Social Functionality and More

<a href="http://www.atlassian.com/">Atlassian</a> has introduced Confluence 4.0 with a number of new enhancements. One of the most impressive changes is the addition of their new editor:

Another unique new feature is the @mentions capabilities. Similar in a way to the functionality that Facebook and Twitter have incorporated, @mentions allows you to engage others in conversation while editing a post or replying to a comment.

Atlassian introduces Confluence 4.0

Liferay, providers of the increasingly popular open source portal, have announced their latest beta for their upcoming 6.1 here their annual <a href="http://www.liferay.com/events/liferay-symposiums/west-coast-2011">West Coast Symposium</a>. Along with this announcement, they have also introduced Liferay Marketplace, a channel for Liferay’s worldwide community of developers and partners to reach Liferay’s broad installation base with enterprise applications and plugins that augment Liferay Portal’s core portal, collaboration, and web content management (WCM) platform. With Marketplace offerings enhancing Liferay’s lightweight platform, customers will be able to build sites and web-based solutions at accelerated speeds.
First previewed at the Liferay East Coast Symposium in May, the Liferay Marketplace hits the first phase of its launch at the West Coast Symposium with a developer-ready release, which includes an SDK for app development. Liferay is already awaiting plugin contributions from several ISV partners, including Alfresco, Omegabit, ProfIT Software, Roambi, salsaDev, SocialEkwity, TandemSeven, Vaadin, and Xtivia.

The new Liferay release introduces a number of new features to expand on the WCM facet of the product. Namely, it adds new features for document management and an improved user experience, which is fitting given the recent attention that has been placed on customer experience.
Liferay 6.1 also adds support for Data Lists and Workflow Forms, popular features for business users that allow them to build lightweight business applications without software developer intervention. Along with its new capabilities, Liferay Portal 6.1 maintains the same API-layers and architecture from Liferay 6.0 released in 2010.
The following are major highlights of Liferay Portal 6.1’s new features:
Powerful Document Management
<ul>
<li>A revamped user interface simplifies management with unified document and image library, live document previews, and an Explorer-like interface.</li>
<li>Custom document typedefinitions with extended meta-data allow end users to define business documents (e.g., Budget Proposal, Employee Review, Promotional Video).</li>
<li>Administrators can define unique workflows per document type per folder.</li>
<li>Support for mounting multiple simultaneous external CMIS repositories allows users to access all enterprise resources in a single location, including SharePoint and Documentum.</li>

Business User Tools: Data Lists, Web Forms and Workflow

<li>User-defined Data Lists capture custom information (e.g., RSVPs, tasks, inventory, or issues) using a spreadsheet-like or forms-based view.</li>

Enhanced Publishing and Site Management

<li>WCM branching allows users to work simultaneously on several variations of a site (e.g., seasonal or campaign-specific variations) and schedule publication dates for each.</li>

Users are invited to vote for their favorite open source projects across all the applicable categories and maximize their chances of winning their share of $24,000. Public votes will be combined with ratings from a panel of Judges with the winners announced on November 7.

Packt announce Finalists for 2011 Open Source Awards

A new version of Pligg CMS is now available for download. The 1.2.0 version of Pligg adds some important security updates, many bug fixes, optimized code, and a few new features. Some of the changes are listed below in an abbreviated changelog highlighting some of the most important updates. It is highly recommend that you update your Pligg CMS website as soon as possible to avoid exploits from previous security holes that have now been patched.
Security fixes

<li>Exclude disabled users from Top Users</li>
<li>Fixed the “Edit user data” admin feature</li>
<li>New weight parameter for modules, allowing modules to control what order they are called in.</li>
<li>Search groups by group name</li>
<li>The Tag Cloud page is now disabled when you have tags turned off site-wide</li>
<li>Human check (anti-spam) module fixes</li>
<li>Localized a few new phrases</li>
<li>Add feature to subtract a value of user score for removing a story vote</li>
<li>You can now use PHP in page content.</li>
<li>Left open HTML tags in the story content area will now be automatically closed.</li>
<li>Users can now select a site language file from their edit profile page. This will only change the Pligg language file, not the content being submitted to the site.</li>
