What I Mean to Say: A Practitioner Perspective on AI, Semantics, and Content Evolution

While doing some surfing the other day, I stumbled across this incredibly good CMS called SetSeed that I thought I would share with you. SetSeed was developed by Ben Vallack and is definitely a CMS with plenty of potential.
Ben was kind enough to issue me a couple of keys to use to mess around with his CMS and I have to say that I am rather impressed.
Initially, I had some issues getting past the site creation screen but once I managed to work around the issue, I had an opportunity to test it out. The interface that Ben has put together is one of the best I've seen in quite some time. The system looks and feels slick with a bit of a minimalist look (which I happen to be a big fan of). Menus work as expected and the functionality appears to be consistent across the two browsers I tested (Chrome &amp; Firefox).
Instead of implementing a stock wysiwyg editor like so many other content management systems, Ben chose to implement a text input dialog with a few basic shortcodes for things such as bold, etc. This makes the system that much faster and allows you to copy and paste data without carrying over formatting and styles from Word, etc.
It's important to keep in mind that this system was developed primarily for those who know their way around their hosting setups and are comfortable using ftp, so the average user may find it a bit more difficult to set up than simple point and click. With a little bit of reading and your hosting providers assistance, however, it isn't particularly difficult to get started.

Two leading players have announced the Drupal Open App Standard Initiative in an effort to help create an improved user experience within the Drupal content management system and to help spur the development of the Drupal economy.
Phase2 Technology, based in Alexandria, VA, and SubHub, based in Cardiff, United Kingdom, have been collaborating on the initiative to achieve interoperability for Drupal apps and thus make it possible for any developer to write an app that would then be deployable across multiple app market implementations.

The Open App Standard defines an app as a discrete package that solves a specific, well-defined task and can execute the task without the need for further coding or development. An app can then be added to a website to enable the specific feature or action.
SubHub launched its own app market in late 2010 for its subscription content platform built using Drupal. The SubHub app market includes apps for MailChimp, Google Analytics, content feeds, Disqus and YouTube.
Phase2 earlier this year launched an app console for OpenPublic, a Drupal distribution for public sector clients. The companies then formed a working group to compare their respective “app” implementations and to consider ways to ensure that apps might be made to be interoperable.
Discussions around the Open App Standard were facilitated by Robert Douglass of Acquia, a leading provider of commercial hosting solutions for Drupal. Douglass will make the public announcement of the Open App Standard to the Drupal community on 23rd August in a session at DrupalCon London.

WordPress is, perhaps, the most prolific Content Management System of all time and it's always amazing to see how much it continues to grow year over year.  According to recent metrics, WordPress powers an amazing 14.7% of the top million websites in the world.

The Incredible Growth of WordPress

According to <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/aug/18/hewlett-packard-takeover-bid-autonomy">The Guardian</a>, Autonomy has confirmed that they have received a $10 billion takeover bid from Hewlett Packard. This news also comes amidst the recent news that HP has decided to officially discontinue all WebOS based products (ie: touchpad, phones, etc).
With the number of recent acquisitions within the CMS market, this purchase may be an attempt on HP's part to actually start turning a profit with one of their business units. They haven't had much success with products recently and Autonomy is certainly doing well for themselves within the CMS space.
Getting into the CMS space may very well be a smart move on their part given the predictions that the market will only continue to grow. The CMS market space has also been quite resilient throughout the recent recession with a number of vendors continuing to turn tidy profits.
We will continue to keep our ears to the ground and listen to see when/if this develops further.

HP in discussions to buy Autonomy

Hannon Hill has released Cascade 6.10 and this new version includes a new Facebook Connector as well as number of additional tools for developers. The Facebook Connector allows end-users to automatically share information about newly published content to a Facebook page.

Contao CMS (formerly known as Typolight) 2.10.0 is available today. This release includes all new features that have been pre­sen­ted at the Contao conference such as HTML5 and CSS3 support, global style sheet variables, compressed CSS and JS files and much more. In addition, over 220 tickets have been incorporated into the new version.
Live Update
The Live Update from version 2.9.5 to 2.10.0 includes almost 1,500 files, if you upgrade from a prior version, it might be even more. This makes this update the biggest in the history of Contao which requires cor­res­pon­ding script timeout and memory limit settings. Therefore, check your server limits and php.ini settings before you start the Live Update.
In case the Live Update terminates prematurely, open the Contao installation directory (e.g. with your FTP client), find the system/constants.php file and reset VERSION and BUILD to the prior installed version (e.g. version 2.9 and build 5 for Contao 2.9.5). Then restart the Live Update.
Third-party extensions
Not all extensions in the Extension Repository are already available for version 2.10. Therefore, check your installed extensions before the update and update them accordingly or temporarily deactivate them in the back end settings.
If you need to use an extension which has not yet been approved for version 2.10, try to deactivate the request tokens in the back end settings. Most extensions should then run under Contao 2.10. Note, however, that this change decreases the security of your installation!

Liferay’s total global revenue saw an approximate 50 percent increase in its core business of providing support and other professional services over the same six-month period in 2010. The 50 percent increase is in addition to growing OEM business with major vendors in technology, telecom, and information services.
Enterprise leaders are increasingly choosing Liferay over much bigger competitors for their enterprise portal and collaboration needs, according to Cheung. In an economic environment requiring fiscal responsibility, efficiency and innovation, companies choosing Liferay cite the product’s flexibility and modularity, breadth of features and ease of use, which together help businesses respond quickly in an agile fashion to changing markets. Financial services companies are building highly personalized online user experiences, health care companies are providing greater information transparency, and universities are responding to students accustomed to highly dynamic, collaborative web environments.
The financial performance reflects strong enthusiasm for Liferay among developers and decision makers. In the first half of this year, Liferay saw its average rate of downloads nearly double to 125,000 downloads per month, compared to the average 64,000 downloads per month in the same period last year.
Web traffic is also accelerating–Liferay has seen in the first six months of 2011 a 41 percent jump in monthly visits to the company’s website from more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. Weekly site visits are up by 25 percent.
Business outlook: In the second half of 2011, Liferay will embark on new opportunities for its ecosystem of partners and developers with the launch of the highly anticipated Liferay Marketplace. End users will be able to find, purchase, download and install third-party Liferay applications through the new site. The collaboration is aimed to make Marketplace the premier destination for solutions built on the Liferay platform.
