Not All Heroes Wear Capes. Here's Why CMS Is Your 'Unsung Hero' in 2025

We last reviewed Concrete5 in 2009 when it came onto the scene with a bang. Designers everywhere reacted to this new CMS with mixed feelings. Most of the people who tried it, were blown away and loved it. Today, we've gone back and put together a more current Concrete5 Review for you.
There were a lot of WordPress and Joomla fans who were unimpressed with the way the system was being marketed at the time. Concrete5's fearless leader, <a href="/concrete5-founder-franz-maruna-interview/" target="_blank">Franz Maruna</a>, was quick to point out that his system was better than the big two (Drupal and Joomla) and wasn't mincing words about it. This, of course, set off a lot of people on a “how dare you?” tirade that only served to market Concrete5 further and peak people's interest.
Whatever side you were/are on, there is no denying that 2 years later, this system is thriving and still seeing large numbers of people converting to it.
How does Concrete5 stack up? Let's take a look.
First off, Concrete5 has a couple of options for those interested in using it. You can get it hosted on their own servers for pricing ranging from $45 / month and up. Alternatively, you can just download it and put it on your own server. It's always good to have options.
<h3>Working with the System</h3>
When you first use Concrete5, you will be presented with your standard page once you've logged into their admin interface. Being that Concrete5 was primarily designed to allow you to work with the page as you see it, all of the tools are available in a toolbar along the top of your site.

Clicking on the Edit Page button on the toolbar enables edit mode which lets you begin working with the content and layout.

As you can see, the toolbar along the top has changed to provide you with options available for edit mode. Hovering over an editable area (defined by the red outline around the content) and clicking will bring up a context menu which options to work within that area.

Clicking Edit brings up the applicable properties page (or editor if you have selected a text area) with which you can modify the area in question. In this case, we're going to take a look at the navigation bar.

For this area, we're given options to work with and modify the navigation of the site. Any time you click on the edit when working with C5, you'll be given the applicable dialog box depending on the type of area you select.
For instance, should you choose to edit a content area that contains a slider of images, you'll see a dialog such as the one below:

Accessing the Page Properties button on the toolbar opens the settings for the page you are on.

Concrete5 has implemented meta tag functionality on a per page basis, so if you want to edit the Meta Keywords, Description or Title you can do so on the Custom Attributes tab of the above window. You can also add your own attributes should you choose to do so.
On the Speed Settings tab, you can modify your caching options to either full or off and how much time the page is cached for. What's nice is that you can set this on each and every page at will.
On the Design button on the top toolbar, you are given the ability to modify the page type and/or choose a theme to apply to the page.

The Permissions button is pretty obvious and allows you to modify who can and cannot see the page. C5 also has built in versioning, meaning you are able to work on a page but revert to an old revision if you need to do so. This is an extremely useful function and has been well implemented. You can access your revisions from the Versions button on the toolbar.

Concrete5 also has a dashboard where you can make modifications to global settings and see site statistics. It can be accessed using the Dashboard button on the toolbar and looks like this:

Look familiar? For some of you who've used WordPress, you'll note that the C5 dashboard is very reminiscent of the popular blogging platform. Is this a bad thing? Not at all, if you see something that works, then follow suit and there's no harm in that.
On the dashboard, you can instantly see site statistics and a number of other areas that you can navigate. Starting from the top, the Sitemap button is pretty straightforward and gives you a birds-eye view of your site in a sitemap. Next in line is the File Manager where you can upload and work with the various files on your site.  The Reports button should show you any data from forms or logs you may have on your site. When attempting to use it on our demo system, it told us we had created no forms. It wasn't immediately obvious how to do so, but thanks to C5's great documentation, we quickly found out the process. Users and Groups lets you modify access rights and privileges to the site and worked as expected.

In a nutshell:
<blockquote>Everyone on the site gets their own “clipboard” if you will, we call it the scrapbook. When you roll over any block in edit mode, you can Copy to Scrapbook on it and save it to your personal scrapbook.
Later, if you're on another page and want the same block, instead of adding a new block you can choose Paste from Scrapbook and see a list of all the blocks you've saved for later.
When you add a block from your personal scrapbook you are making a new instance of that block. That means this is totally not useful if you want to have the same block show up in many placed but be editable from a single location.</blockquote>
Pages and Themes are pretty obvious. Here you can access and apply various page templates and themes to your site.
The Add Functionality option lets you connect your site to the Concrete5 marketplace. The marketplace is a community addons repository where you can search and purchase / download addons and theme for the system.
Under System and Maintenance, you are able to perform backups, see scheduled jobs, and more.

Last but not least, Sitewide Settings does just what it says and lets you configure your site to your hearts content.
<h3>Conclusions</h3>
In testing the demo on Concrete5, we found the system to be sleek, responsive, and easy to use. What's interesting is how it's akin to what you would find inexpensive commercial products but you can get it for free. The inline editing is a pleasure to work with and the system seems powerful and responsive. Can it be compared with Joomla and Drupal? I think it's a different type of CMS. One that is in a different realm from these two and as such, comparing them would be fruitless. Concrete5 was designed to be easy, you can see it in the way the system works and the logical way everything just does what is expected.
It's a fun system to use and with the growing number of add-ons and themes, it's getting better all the time.
One thing that should always be considered is how well the pages generated by the system are coded and whether or not they validate properly. One small concern we found is that when submitting the demo system we were using with no modifications by us to the W3C validator, it came back with an error.

Now, before you jump to conclusions, this is a pretty minor validation error. Hopefully, the team at C5 see this and quickly correct it. Having said that, it would have been more reassuring to see none at all but this wouldn't be a major fix.

We all know websites of today can no longer be the static pages with dated information that entities once used to merely announce their presence to the online world. Visitors to your site want more, or they will go elsewhere: they want to be engaged.
Digital marketers and communicators face increasingly complex issues when engaging with their website visitors. Consumers have limited time, the message needs to be split but consistent across multiple channels, and communications need to be sharper and more targeted and relevant than ever before.
To achieve this, an online strategy must be underpinned by a Web Content Management System. And great people, stakeholders and well-defined requirements – along with a flexible, easy to use technology platform – are common elements for the success for a Web CMS implementation.
The continued success of your CMS project will also be dependent not just on launching a shiny new website, but also on your website continuing to hold the interest of your audience with fresh, relevant and engaging content for the entire life of the CMS.
How can you ensure continued success? If followed, these ten commandments can significantly contribute to the successful procurement and implementation of your Web CMS.
1. Thou shalt be inclusive The key to a successful CMS selection and ongoing  implementation is to define a high quality set of requirements that accurately communicate your business requirements internally, to your potential business partners as well as software vendors.
All too often a set of requirements is written from the perspective of one business unit, in the hope that the resulting solution will fit (or can be imposed upon) the rest of the  business.
When addressing this, assemble a broad set of stakeholders – a cross section – from all parts of the business that will be impacted by the project.
In addition, stakeholders should own their requirements throughout the process. This gives you a place to go when clarifying requirements, prioritizing, or when a business justification for an investment decision is needed.
Remember that success is not just about the technical capabilities of the platform, but of the adoption by the business at large.
2. Thou shalt be prepared to engage Digital communications is changing. We are at a point where engaging with our audience is not just about publishing a website. It’s about delivering a relevant and personal experience across multiple channels and touch points, including email, social media channels, mobile and call centers.
These requirements for highly dynamic, reusable and personalized content put special technical demands on your CMS platform that differentiate first generation web publishing systems from true web content management and channel agnostic delivery.
Do your requirements reflect the needs of your organization to move forward? To integrate with other channels?
Do your requirements include the ability to gain insight about your visitor?
3. Thou shalt be easy – really, really easy Ok – so who doesn’t have “easy to use” as a requirement for a CMS? User adoption is a critical aspect that cannot be underestimated. The success of CMS implementation will be wholly dependent on the people using it.
This is important now more than ever as visitors demand relevant, personalized engagement with your website. It requires a lot more content, specific to visitor segment and written by a broader set of people that understand the detail.
It’s important to choose easy-to-use CMS tools that fit your business users and to ensure you can leverage the existing tools that content contributors already use and are comfortable with.
4. Thou shalt not kill your business process Do you fit the CMS, or does the CMS fit you? Implementing a CMS often requires some changes to business processes, roles and how you reach your audience.
Ideally you want to use this as an opportunity to make improvements to your existing processes, but this may not always be the case.
Organizations are often forced to implement changes in order to accommodate the CMS, and this area often gets overlooked when selecting a CMS.
It’s important to consider: Will the way the content is stored and accessed change the way people work with the system?
Does it have a workflow process? And do the notifications and alerts fit the way you operate as a business?
5. Thou shalt not be a slave to technology The technical delivery behind a compelling web experience is no longer solely about the database of your choice, a web scripting language and a few templates. It’s now more about a deeper integration into your back office systems, leveraging content and services from outside the server room and in the cloud, and providing feedback about visitor information into customer and marketing systems.
These integrations are often neglected in the rush to launch the visible return on the CMS investment – the website – but they can be a significant obstacle to providing a better visitor experience if the underlying CMS technology turns out to be restrictive.
Ensure that the technical requirements of integrating the CMS into both the legacy systems and any proposed new systems are taken into consideration. Also, ensure that you choose a CMS with a broad technical footprint with regard to industry standards and a proven integration track record.
6. Thou shalt not worship false technology gods Some products in the market are great at what they do. But that does not necessarily mean that it is a fit for you. Many organizations are pushed into using products where ubiquity within IT departments and the buzz around a new release can appear very compelling, but that’s not always the best fit for your requirements or processes.
Remember that not all products will meet mandatory business requirements around accessibility, branding, multi-channel/multi-site publishing, analytics, social media and email integration.
7. Thou shalt treat all your visitors equally (including Google) We have a legal obligation to make our websites accessible. This includes not only how the website will publish accessible content, but also compliance with legal and technical standards that include access to information for the disabled community.
Moreover, the structure of a web page, its adherence to web standards and how it is described by metadata should also take into account best practices for Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
Thus, your CMS requirements must also cover how the website will publish accessible content. Which technical and legal standards will it support?
8. Thou shalt seek and meet your visitor As we have already touched upon, a single website is no longer sufficient to satisfy digital marketing and communication objectives. These activities are now driven to create an Engagement Hub, fed by your content and publishing relevant content to multiple channels.
Digital marketers must be present where the consumer spends their online time, which means your CMS should make it simple to publish content to multiple channels—website, mobile, email, and social media channels.
A CMS that embodies this hub approach helps provide your audience with a consistent message and view of your brand across these channels, leverage the efficiencies of content reuse and coordinate communication campaigns.
This hub can also serve as a single conduit for visitor insight, where you collate and process feedback from email campaigns, social media, web analytics, comments and visitor behavior.
9. Thou shalt seek early reward Although digital engagement is broader than just creating websites, CMS implementation is no doubt focused on that first website.
The maturity of the CMS industry would suggest that we’ve moved on from starting-from-scratch with each implementation, but that may not always be the case.
It’s important to understand what a vendor offers in terms of getting your website up and running quickly, including ‘out of the box’ example websites, deep third party integrations with commonly used products, and code examples – plus of course case studies, testimonials and real-life references where they have gotten a website live in the timescales you require.
10. Thou shalt seek like-minded partners There will be bumps in the road in any implementation of enterprise software, and the impact of these is greatly determined by the people with whom you have chosen to work.
It is imperative to get to know the people involved in providing the proposal: the implementation team, be it the vendor or a third party, and the vendor support team. It’s obviously difficult to do this in a sales process, so you might want to select someone to work on a proof of concept, a pilot or an extended demonstration of your scenario.
By following these commandments you can help ensure that your implementation is based on sound footing, decreasing the possibility of project failure and increasing the likelihood of a successful CMS, which will evolve as your organization does.

Nuxeo Announces Nuxeo World 2011,  the Second Edition of its Global User Conference

Tiki 6.3 is now available for download. This update addresses a security issue regarding LDAP authentication, first reported by Thomas Hommes. There are no other changes in this release. This update is recommended for Tiki administrators using LDAP authentication.

Part of their sell is the ability to take an existing website and place it into their own CMS, giving you the ability to take full control of a website. In spite of having plenty of features, Purple Parrot has some features that users may find limiting, including difficult site design process, lack of access to code, and some unwieldy operations in the CMS.
<h2>Creating a Site</h2>
I'll walk through the process of creating a site on Purple Parrot.
When I log in for the first time, the Admin Dashboard is a bit bewildering. Here's what I see.

SiteBuilder
The most prominent category is “SiteBuilder Features.” Within this category are the following features, including a brief onscreen description.

<li>External Widgets – External widgets are portable chunks of code supplied by third-party sources that can be installed and executed on any of your site's pages.</li>
<li>General Information – Provide general information about your company.</li>
<li>Menu Designer – Design the menus that will help your visitors navigate through your site.</li>
<li>Page Manager – Create the custom or module pages you have selected for your site.</li>
<li>Select Your Color Theme – Select or create your own color theme for the site.</li>
<li>Select Your Font – Choose the font to be used throughout your site.</li>
<li>Template Manager – Design the templates that contain the header, footer, and/or sidebar for the pages of your website.</li>
</ul>
I found the descriptions of each feature to be helpful, but was nonplussed as to which I should choose to start my site.
The dashboard links are replicated in the menu bar. So, instead of clicking one of these dashboard links, I chose the “SiteBuilder” menu link, and chose “General Information.”

General Information
On this screen, I edit my site's general information, including the company name, a description, and a login option.

The customization options at the bottom are denoted with green checkmarks. When I attempt to “select site width,” I receive the following information:

To “check the page out,” I go to the top of the page, where I see the following:

Clicking the lock image then “checks out” the page, where I can complete further operations.
Site Width
There are two options for site width:

These two options are standard. I do notice, however, there is little flexibility to change these options, nor is there a responsive design option. The customization is limited, which is acceptable for someone with limited web experience.
Metadata
There is an area to edit the metadata, which is helpful for SEO purposes.

The logo upload process is fairly straightforward, if not a wee bit clunky.

Font Selection
Finally, I go to select my font. I find it a bit unusual that selecting a font takes me to a new edit page. Here's a look at it.

After choosing “Century Gothic, 14px,” I move on to “Go to Color Selection.”
Color Selection

The color selection page allows me to choose color themes, which “will affect elements such as text boxes and the search button on your visitor pages.” Customization is available to “edit this theme.”
I choose the “Neutral Green” theme.

A word about navigation so far. The navigation does not immediately strike me as intuitive. However, as I have been creating the site, I realize that I am following the order of the menu elements under “Site Builder.” (See menu screenshot above). At this point, I've come to the “Menu Designer” element on the site.

In order to edit an element of the menu, I first must click the lock icon. Then I click the pencil icon to edit the menu element. This brings up a new screen:

The right area of the screen displays a preview of what the menu looks like. Changes are instant.

The menus are prepopulated with the demo elements. I had to remove these one-by-one in order to create my own menu items.

Renaming menu elements required a multiple-click process. Each time I create a new one, I am redirected to the beginning of the process.

Overall, the menu customization is somewhat cumbersome and confusing. When I finish editing my menu elements, I click “Save,” and am prompted to click a lock again,  click “Save &amp; Close.” I arrive at the main menu designer page.
External Widgets
The next element to customize is “External Widgets.”

The widget option is helpful in that it allows a variety of codes to be added to the site. Purple Parrot allows an unlimited number of widgets. When a widget is added from this main External Widgets page, it can be added to any page on the site, or added to the sitewide template.
Adding a new widget prompts a popup to paste the code.

Template Manager
The next element for me to modify is Template Manager.

I am prompted to design a new template for the header, footer, and sidebar. The first step is to “Add New Template.”

Once I add the new template, I can edit it after selecting it from the template list.

The persistent WYSIWYG preview pane is a helpful at-a-glance perspective of how the template customization is going. The downside of the large preview pane is that it allows limited space for customization.
Under template properties, I can select a background style, layout, and title style.
Under the Standard Toolkit Menu options, I am provided with the following toolkit items:

To add an element, I simply drag it to the live editing pane. Once I do, a setup box appears that allows me to customize that specific element.
Advanced Toolkit
Beyond these basics, I am provided with a variety of advanced elements.

Each of these advanced toolkit options has its own unique set of customization options, similar to those in the basic toolkit.
Having finished my template design, I click “Save &amp; Close.” I see a notification that my template was saved successfully, and return to the template manager page.
This process of template creation can be continued to create as many templates are desired.
Page Manager
The page manager menu furnishes me with a list of the pages on my site. The list seen in the screenshot below are the pages already created in the demo site that I have been editing. Each of these pages can be edited.

To edit the page, I first click on the lock button to “check out” the page. Then, I click on the pencil edit icon.

The page editor replicates many of the elements seen in the template editor. The options and editing options are simpler. One addition that is not part of the template editor is the “Search Information” for SEO purposes.

The standard toolkit and advanced toolkit elements are all available for adding to these custom pages.
Beyond the pages created for the site, it is possible to create special module pages.

This completes the site creation phase. Depending on the extent of the site being created, this process can take a few hours or up to several days. There are a surprising number of options available. The level of customization is also impressive.
Publish
Having completed my site to my level of satisfaction, I click “Go to Publish.”

After receiving the publish confirmation, I can also view the custom pages and modules that were created or modified.

The persistent top menu in the Purple Parrot admin provides two help menus — Help and Help Desk. (In addition there is a <a href="http://www.purpleparrot.com/m/faqs" target="_blank">FAQ</a> menu.)
Main Help Menu
The help menu provides a readme style help document. It is navigable and readable, if not a bit Web 1.0-looking.

Overview of Help Availability
One of the most helpful features of Purple Parrot was the way it guided users through each element of site creation and editing. Throughout the editing process explanations are included that describe what an element is, how it works, and what to do to make changes. Purple Parrot provides a good setup for users who have little web design or development knowledge to create an entire site with lots of features and considerable power. In addition to these consistent explanations, there are also question mark and information buttons situated at main junctions for further information.

Pros
<ul>
<li>WYSIWYG editing. Seeing changes as I make them is a helpful feature. Although viewing the actual sample site requires a few extra clicks, there are some editing areas in which WYSIWYG performance is available.</li>
<li>Extensive module menu. I was impressed with the number of modules and the extent of power that they provided. This was, perhaps, the greatest advantage of the CMS. Purple Parrot is primed for power.</li>
</ul>
Cons
<ul>
<li>Clunky. The advantages of Purple Parrot as a firm with 20+ years of experience is evident. There are, however, some areas in which this advantage could be a downside. Site navigation is confusing at times. Features of the editor are not at all fluid or easy. Some actions take multiple clicks, creating confusion and delays.</li>
<li>No source code access. Although it is possible to edit a site to a detailed extent, it is not possible to dig into the source code. As a solution designed for the non-developer, it's fine. For those who desire more power, this may be viewed as a limitation.</li>
<li>Lack of ready-made templates. One advantage of Purple Parrot is that they can convert an existing site to their CMS. For the user who doesn't have an existing site, they will need to either contract with Purple Parrot to create one, or try to make their own. There are no ready-made templates that I found except for a duplicate of Purple Parrot's own site in the demo version. This can create a hurdle. First, creating a site from scratch is time consuming and out-of-reach for those who have limited design experience. Second, having Purple Parrot create a site may not meet the user's wishes, due to the somewhat dated design style that is evidently used by Purple Parrot.</li>
</ul>
Overall, Purple Parrot provides a comprehensive and workable CMS. Pricing is provided in a <a href="http://www.purpleparrot.com/solutions/" target="_blank">three-tier model</a>, depending on the user's needs. Purple Parrot may not be the first choice for those who want a polished look with quick-and-easy startup. Although Purple Parrot has a nice array of modules, it is lacking in design beauty and ease of use. I was disappointed and sometimes confused about how to perform a simple function. Furthermore, because of its design limitations and inability to create a responsive site, Purple Parrot will not satisfy customers who desire to adapt to mobile visitors. Unless this CMS make some significant revisions to adapt to updated design trends and mobile access, Purple Parrot will remain in a bygone era of web design.

CoreMedia, a leading Web content management (WCM) company, today announced the results of an international consumer survey on online user experience satisfaction. The independent study, which surveyed over 1,100 German and U.S. Internet users, provides insight into consumer satisfaction with their digital experience across several key areas, including website personalization and mobile website usage.
The survey gauges whether companies are delivering customized, engaging online experiences that take into account user context such as gender, location, time of day/year, weather, social media “likes” and updates. A recent Gartner report stated that “Context-aware computing — the concept of leveraging information about the end user to improve the quality of the interaction — can improve business results.” The survey found, however, that companies are failing to meet expectations for the majority of consumers, with more than half of the survey participants (56 percent) indicating that they do not feel as though website content is tailored to their personal needs or preferences.
Gartner offers an explanation behind this disconnect, reporting “Despite some of the benefits, there is a perception in the market that the level of understanding required to deliver an appropriate user experience across multiple channels of interaction remains elusively difficult or prohibitively expensive to achieve.” Although Web content management vendors have created compelling technologies that allow companies and organizations to build their online Web presence, these platforms often require specialized IT staff to address the targeting of content to specific audiences or devices. Seldom is this in fact done, often due to the competing goals of IT and the business; however this role is best left to the marketer or business user, who best understands both the business and engagement drivers behind the user experience, and their audience’s context and needs.
When asked to identify their preferences for their online experiences, the majority of respondents (69 percent) chose the ability to quickly find what they are searching for as the top priority. Almost a quarter of the respondents selected websites that could easily adapt to their current needs, and 14 percent of survey respondents identified being able to comment, recommendation or retweet as taking precedence. The message is clear – consumers want engaging, interactive experiences, but above all, the interaction must quickly meet their desired outcome.
The survey also explored mobile Web sentiment. With smartphone adoption accelerating in both the U.S. and Europe (27 percent and 31 percent of mobile subscribers, respectively, in 2010 ), analysts are recommending companies focus on creating a seamless experience in terms of how they engage with their customers across all channels. Despite the increasing trends in mobile usage and the understanding of the different intentions associated with mobile devices, it appears companies still have a bit more work to do on delivering an engaging user experience across all channels. Over a third (36 percent) felt most sites are often difficult to read on a mobile device, and 40 percent said they do not regularly access mobile sites because it is too complicated. Another interesting finding relates to expectations regarding mobile when compared to traditional desktop browsing; 24 percent felt that most mobile sites are missing the functionality that one finds on websites when accessed via a PC. This supports the theory that rather than the more immersive Web experience one expects when using a desktop, people use mobile devices for specific goals- quick searches, social media updates or transactions, etc.
“Even though it is well known that providing a more engaging, adaptive experience through all consumer interaction channels is becoming a business necessity, there is much room for improvement,” said Glenn Conradt, vice president, Global Marketing and North America, CoreMedia. “It’s important to tailor content to the context of both your audience and the devices through which they access this information. The user experience can be dramatically improved if it can adjust location, time and means of access on-demand. However business users need to be the ones in control of designing and delivering these contextual experiences.”

Updates for all versions of ExpressionEngine have been released today in order to incorporate several security improvements and critical bug fixes.  No sites are known to have been affected by the security issues, all of which are obscure.  However, it is a possibility, and therefore this update is recommended for all users.
2.1.3 and 2.1.4 Beta are both build releases that incorporate a <a href="http://www.codeignitor.com/user_guide/changelog.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Codeigniter security release</a> that improves XSS filtering and sanitization of variables passed in the URL.  There are also two ExpressionEngine specific security changes in the new builds: a tightening of the encryption used with the contact form and improved handling of code tags in submitted data.
All Critical-Major bugs existing at the time of the release were also fixed.  The full list of 2.1.4 Beta changes can be viewed in the <a href="http://expressionengine.com/user_guide/changelog.html#v213" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Change Log</a>.  Developers should note that the security library should no longer be explicitly loaded.  Version 2.1.3 incorporates all of those changes plus the critical bug fixes that had already been added to the Beta:

<li>Fixed a bug (#14708) where the control panel login did not redirect with a session ids, breaking access in some cases.</li>

ExpressionEngine sees maintenance and security updates

Magnolia, the open source content management vendor that delivers simplicity on an enterprise scale, today announced two new hires to ensure customer satisfaction and continued new business expansion.
Bill Beardslee has been hired as General Manager for Magnolia in North, Central and South America. Bill will be responsible for expanding the Americas partner network. Bill was previously with dotCMS, where he developed and managed the partner program.
