Not All Heroes Wear Capes. Here's Why CMS Is Your 'Unsung Hero' in 2025

Over the last few years, content management systems have begun to evolve drastically. Initially, these products were perceived as being a simple means to putting a presence on the web, perhaps for the purpose of selling a product or service. Now, however, the requirements of what I would define as a true content management system have changed rather drastically.
Take a look at the recent release of <a href="http://www.liferay.com">Liferay</a> 6EE for instance.. in my mind, it somewhat speaks to what true content management is, which is why I've been so pleased with its release and the advancements that it brings.
In my opinion, the ideal CMS now blends a mixture of social aspects, workflow, and document management with a sleek presentation layer. No longer are they just systems that exist to stick a page up on the web… they are now platforms that are designed to provide a complete online presence. True, you may not use all of the features that these systems provide, but being given the opportunity to use them if you choose is what matters.
Often, when doing interviews, I ask the question “How do you define a CMS?” and there almost always seems to be a large number of differing opinions (<a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/what-is-a-cms">see some of them here</a>). This, I think, is due to confusion amongst both vendors and users as to how each side uses these products. Only recently have both sides begun to realize the need to engage one another using social media in order for both sides to benefit.
What is a CMS really? Is it a portal? Is it a presentation layer? No. It's all of this and more.
We can only hope that as vendors like Liferay and others start to redefine their products, so to do can we redefine the term and come to a mutual agreement as to what it really means.
Terminology aside, the CMS market is growing and expanding at a rate that promotes stronger competition, higher expectations and (hopefully) lowering costs for the end user.  With the culmination of portals, wikis, blogs, forums and social aspects being combined into these products, we can soon expect a shift in the way websites are used and navigated. More and more companies and organizations are moving away from the “sales type” website and into the “engage the customer” type whereby the site is defined by the users requirements and interactions as opposed to the companies need to sell products or services.
So what does a visitor to your website really want? According to what we are seeing of late, they want easy access to information about your product or service, a fast and effective means of communicating with other users of your products and a way to reach out to you as well if they so desire. They want to be able to spread the word if they are happy or let you know if they are not and they want to do this quickly and efficiently without whittling away their time trying to find out how to do so.
With the advancement in social media and the way we interact with the web, we can most certainly expect more unique and interesting approaches from those companies that are fit to react in a timely manner to these changing needs.

The Evolution of Content Management

<a href="http://www.liferay.com">Liferay</a> CEO, Bryan Cheung, today announced a new product from Liferay that is due out in Q4 of 2010. This new product is being called LESA.
LESA stands for Liferay Enterprise Support Application and is a tool that allows support engineers within companies to provide exceptional enterprise support for their clients.
Liferay plans to use this product in-house to allow their customers to rate and rank the responses from their support team.
LESA came about after Liferay had been using Atlassian's JIRA product as a support platform within their company for a number of years and now, with the release of Liferay 6EE, they realized they were able to completely rebuild this system with their own tools.
LESA also has effective built in metrics which allows for more real time analytics for managers and company professionals.
Looking at the product on the projector as Bryan is showing it off, it looks like an incredibly nice and clean interface that provides exactly what companies who use/need support software but don't want to be overwhelmed with too much data on the screen at one time.

Liferay announces LESA - Liferay Enterprise Support Application

<a href="http://www.ektron.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ektron</a> announced today a redesign of the Ektron Partner portal to support Ektron’s established Partner management methodology for systems integrators, digital agencies, and technology, training and translation partners worldwide.  The portal leverages the Ektron Marketing Optimization and Social Software Suites to obtain and evaluate data that will create more customized Partner solutions.  Within the portal, Partners will have direct access to training resources and supplemental tools for project success, including links to accreditation exams, surveys, and webinars.

Ektron Revamps Partner Portal

Today marks the first day of <a href="http://www.liferay.com/wcs">Liferay's West Coast Symposium</a> and CMS Critic was in attendance to cover this event.
There was definitely a large turnout with a crowd of approximately 250 or so in attendance. The attendees ranged from Liferay staff and community members to partners and customers and there was a lot of buzz in the air about the new release.

At 9:00 am, Liferay's Chief Marketing Officer, Paul Hinz took to the stage to begin the introduction of Liferay 6EE.

Some of the highlights from his talk:
<ul>
<li>Back in 1995, we were building web applications, web content. Most of it was centered around Apache but they were very simple applications and content. Then came Tomcat was more focused on application development and building apps on the web. This in turn, led into the idea that we can't just build with random tools and have developers assemble things on their own, we actually need application stacks.  In 2000, some of the major companies began providing these stacks: application layer, portal layers, collaboration layer, etc. These layers became more and more complex. Then jBoss came around and this was important because there was now a lower cost and it was lighter weight and easier to use. So now there was this open source aspect that had a lower cost and felt simpler and people liked it.</li>
<li>We started to see more and more trending toward open source projects and applications. Then in 2005, this trend towards simplicity led to LAMP becoming very popular.  A lot of the external properties were being built using LAMP and the focus from developers started to gear towards these open source stacks. Then a few more trends happened and rich apps came into play such as Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook and similar properties and the social aspect of the web and of our content started to become a focus.</li>
<li>Every five years, there is a major focus change and now in 2010 there is a change that is about to happen. A single enterprise has a large number of different applications that they have to build.  The current trend seems to be towards what he called, Strategic Open Source.</li>
<li>Strategic Open Source is where the CIO now focuses their attention not only on the mission critical layer of apps but actually starts looking at these lower level open source applications and wants to get them supported and integrated into the existing infrastructure.</li>
<li>There is now a need to have a development platform that allows you to build your presentation layer, that gives you the content management and workflow capabilities and also gives you that rich developer aspect.</li>
<li>Collaboration has changed how we are building applications. If you look at the enterprise, we started with email then calendars began being added. Over time, blogs, wikis and other platforms have been integrated. There is now a strong need to build social applications.</li>
<li>There are a large number of companies that have portal based platforms but the platforms themselves are not progressing forward. This leaves their customers facing an end of feature life. The product may not be end of life but there will be no enhancements and with the new requirements we just discussed, this leaves these customers in a bad position.</li>
<li>Liferay, however, continues to add features. They support 11 different operating systems, 12 different databases and 11 different containers.</li>
<li>The customers who are facing end of feature life on their existing solutions are now going to be looking for a way out. Paul mentioned that a conservative number is 10,000 different customers who are facing end of feature life.</li>
</ul>
One of the most interesting announcements was the new First year Free offer that Liferay is extending to these customers who are facing end of feature life and are stuck on an aging platform. What they are offering is these customers can get Liferay for free for one year to help them migrate their existing infrastructure from these stagnant solutions to Liferay without having to pay licensing fees for both their existing solution and for Liferay.
This is a very interesting and, in my opinion, brilliant strategy that Liferay has taken on. Existing customers who are in this position are going to be very hard pressed to find any other solution that is providing this kind of offer.

Some of Bryan's key points included:

<li>How do you get the benefits of tomcat without being at the mercy of open source volunteers and how do you get the benefit of enterprise software without the cumbersome overhead? He firmly believes that Liferay is about giving you all of the best options and allowing you to “be greedy”.</li>
<li>Liferay 6 as a solution is complete. It provides a portal, WCM, workflow, collaboration in a single package which eliminates the need to get other products.</li>
<li>What if you have existing products that you are tied to and are unwilling to migrate away from such as SAP or Salesforce? Liferay allows integration with these products as well. Not only that, but if for some reason you find Liferay is not the solution for your needs, migration away from the product is just as easy.</li>
<li>Liferay is 90% more affordable than comparable solutions.</li>
<li>There are 35,000 community members in addition to the existing employees which provides Liferay with a very large pool of developers that are continually enhancing and advancing their product.</li>
<li>Liferay is also only 215mb in size. This includes tomcat, a database, web content management, blog server, wiki, portal, identity management and role management. It is everything you need without the software bloat.</li>

Liferay release ushers in major improvements

In one of the big announcements at this year's eZ conference, eZ Systems revealed some important changes to the way they encourage and integrate innovative contributions to eZ Publish, their open source platform. The eZ Publish core is currently developed solely by eZ Systems engineers.

Now, eZ Systems will offer the eZ Publish Community Project, a version of their open source platform which will open the development process up to long-term, trusted community members. Concurrently, eZ Systems will release eZ Publish Enterprise, a version of its platform which benefits from the accelerated innovation of the community edition, but which will be managed from a dedicated code base and subject to stronger, more rigorous testing. As a supported version of the platform, eZ Publish Enterprise will offer additional value to customers using eZ Publish in a mission critical environment. These changes are set to take effect with the up-coming release scheduled for September 28th, 2010.
By splitting the Community Project and Enterprise versions, eZ Systems aims to increase the value of their offering across the board, from the eZ community to customers and business partners.
eZ Publish Community Project is a great opportunity for long-term partners and community members who have demonstrated their skills and knowledge to have even more influence on the eZ Publish roadmap. The more than 37,000 members of the eZ community will now have the opportunity to directly commit to the eZ Publish Community Project code repository. The Community Project amounts to a new way of contributing to eZ Publish's core in a simple, more efficient manner, and not just by way of Community add-ons. Now more than ever, governance of the eZ community is in the hands of its members.
eZ Publish has traditionally been known for high quality standards. With the strong subscription product support and maintenance available through eZ Systems, and stringent quality assurance standards, eZ Publish has been an enterprise-ready product from the beginning. Now, in order to benefit from the accelerated innovation in the eZ Publish Community Project, without compromising the high quality standards for professional use, eZ is introducing a new edition of its software. eZ Publish Enterprise will be managed in a dedicated code base–a code repository with stronger testing and packaging, featuring integrated Enterprise add-ons available only for eZ Publish Enterprise subscribers.

eZ Systems set to boost innovation while enhancing business value to professional users

Improvements in the semantic definitions module The semantic definitions module enable a user to define a semantic ontology. In this new version, a small content links viewer is displayed in the main content module to give editors a better overview of what the current content node is related to, without opening the full content links browser.
Rounded corners and borders on images Webnodes CMS already has an industry leading image handling technology built into the system, but this release includes a number of useful additions and improvements. Rounded corners can now be applied to images for a fraction of the effort normally required. The image handling engine can now also add borders to images.

Joomla 1.6 Beta 9 Now Available

Alfresco software, the leader in open source enterprise content management (ECM), has been named to IDG InfoWorld’s annual list of the Best Open Source Software, known as the Bossie awards. Alfresco Honored in InfoWorld’s Best of Open Source Software Awards

Georg-Christian Pranschke from http://www.sensepost.com/ discovered a vulnerability in Elgg that could potentially allow SQL injection attacks using crafted URLs or POSTs. Versions 1.7.3 and 1.6.3 correct this and are highly recommended for all Elgg users.

Magnolia, the open source content management vendor that delivers simplicity on an enterprise scale, today announced that it was honored with the Swiss Open Source Contribution Award for the worldwide success of its content management system based on international standards, and for its open relationship with customers, partners, and the development community.
The jury of experts from the Swiss Open Systems User Group in Zurich evaluated contestants for open standards, economic benefits, competitiveness with commercial software, and their contributions to the community.
Jury member Sebastian Spaeth, ETH Zurich, praised Magnolia for its international success, and pointed to the “clear link to the Developer's Corner on the company's homepage, and its open, ‘upstream' communication approach.” Corsin Camichel of camichel.com emphasized how Magnolia's “high quality and activity” contributed to its success.
Magnolia founders Pascal Mangold and Boris Kraft are particularly pleased with the fairness of competitor and jury member Cédric Hüsler, Director of Product Marketing for Day Software. According to Hüsler, “Magnolia offers a well-known standards-based solution that enterprises use to manage their mission-critical information. Customers and partners are intimately involved in product development, and innovations gained in the process flow back into the open source community.”
This is the third year for the Swiss Open Source Awards, conferred to open source projects, companies, and individuals. In addition to the Contribution award, the jury granted a Business Case and an Advocacy award.

Magnolia CMS wins Swiss Open source award

Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware has been awarded a 2010 Bossie award (Best of Open Source Software) by InfoWorld, in the Applications category. InfoWorld's Best of Open Source Software Awards (aka the Bossies) is chosen annually by Test Center editors and reviewers, and recognize the best open source software for business users.
The editors called Tiki “a powerful, integrated, Web-based application” that can “build and maintain websites, wikis, groupware, CMSes, forums, blogs, and bug trackers, as well as make them multilingual.”
The review continues, citing Tiki's “fine-grained role-based privilege system” as a differentiating factor against classic wiki models, such as MediaWiki. Tiki Receives Best of Open Source Software Applications Award
