Members of the Tiki Community, including developers, end-users, advocates, will be meeting in the Big Apple from October 3-6, 2010. This TikiFest will be the last major gathering before the release of Tiki 6.
The TikiFest, a long-standing tradition of the Tiki Community, is a chance for community members (who do not normally meet) to get together, socialize, and further the development of Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware. More than 40 of these “code sprints” have been held throughout the world.
In addition to preparing for the upcoming Tiki 6 release, TikiFest New York will also planning for Tiki 7, celebrating Tiki's 8th birthday, and an open demonstration hosted by Casa Frela Gallery (details below).
Several Tiki Community members also plan to participate in Ignite Web 2.0 Expo NY (<a>http://www.web2expo.com/webexny2010/public/schedule/detail/15524</a>) and Open Video (<a>http://www.openvideoconference.org/</a>), both of which take place in New York during the TikiFest.
Tiki Demonstration

Tikifest New York: Countdown to Tiki 6

There are a number of great hosted CMS solutions on the market, we've highlighted a number of them in one of our recent issues of CMS Critic Recommends (<a href="/cms-critic-recommends-july-edition/">read</a>) and LightCMS is definitely a contender.LightCMS is packed with features at what we think is a reasonable price compared to other options on the market. What are it's strengths and weaknesses?Let's take a look.First off, for the average user, you may be able to make do with their free package which allows you a decent starting point to begin seeing what the system can do for you. It's a great way to try out LightCMS and decide whether you want to give it a go long-term or not.Once you've chosen your subdomain you'd like to use from their website, you are ready to get started. We chose http://cmscritic.publishpath.com (for obvious reasons).On your first visit, you are greeted with a basic website waiting for your input. You can access the main administrative interface by adding /admin to the end of your URL (ie: http://cmscritic.publishpath.com/admin) which would then prompt you to log on for access to the “dashboard”.Upon logging in, you'll be greeted with a screen similar to the following (dependent upon the theme you chose):<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/sitefinity_tedkqt.jpg" alt="Initial Screen - LightCMS" /> Initial Screen – LightCMSAs you can see, a number of areas of the website became activated once you logged in. Let's take a quick look at what the interface to a form element looks like.Here's where LightCMS outdoes it's competitors. Once you have added the element for a form, you simply click on “edit form” in a drop down box within the element which will take you to the form edit screen.From within this screen, there are two tabs. There are the usual suspects such as form name, description, email notification, captcha, etc.  but where it really shines is the option for payment settings.Clicking on this option allows you to embed payment functions right into your form complete with integration into Google Checkout, Paypal and Authorize.net. Now that my friends, is very simple and very slick. It's the little things that make the difference and this is definitely one of the best and easiest to implement functions we've seen so far in a form module.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2021/07/26-08-2010-12-34-57-pm_dz9kpg.jpg" alt="Payment Options in Forms - LightCMS" />Payment Options in Forms – LightCMSNow that we've looked at the various elements and content functions of the system, let's dig a bit deeper into the administrative interface shall we?LightCMS includes the ability to manage settings on a page by page basis or on a site basis (or both).  If you wanted to set individual meta data, css, user access permissions or SSL encryption for instance, this can all be done by clicking on the Page Settings button right from the Page you are currently on. You are also able to define custom templates (themes) to the individual pages as you see fit.Here's a quick screenshot of what this page looks like:<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/billrogers-150x150_wkzay1.jpg" alt="Page Settings - LightCMS" /> Page Settings – LightCMSYou can see in the screenshot above, there is another menu bar in black that offers links to Designs, Users, Settings, Pages and Stats as well.Under the Designs menu, you are given the ability to perform the following options:<ul><li>Upload your own design (this page also has indepth documentation on how to create your own templates as well as how to alter existing ones).</li><li>Choose from a library of provided designs.</li><li>Order your own custom designs created for you by the developers of LightCMS.</li></ul>The Settings button at the top allows you to setup redirects, modify your robots.txt files and add/remove domain names as needed.Clicking on the Stats button (an option available to paid and not free accounts) gives you access to a simple but effective statistics screen highlighting activity on your site.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/campsite_zycpew.jpg" alt="Statistics - LightCMS" />Statistics – LightCMSAnother very unique function that LightCMS provides is the ability to set up and bill your clients (if you are a developer) for each site you create and host with LightCMS.You can dictate your own pricing structure (separate from what you pay LightCMS for use of their service) complete with your own plans, pricing structures and automated billing. It's like running your own business but all of the work is done for you.We won't get into great detail about how this works (it's better to just visit the site yourself then for us to attempt to paraphrase it. What we will say is this: It's incredibly easy to use, convenient and a huge time saver.Final ConclusionsPro's:<ul><li>Everything but the kitchen sink is included.</li><li>Incredibly easy to use, might just be the easiest solution we've found to date.</li><li>Fast, intuitive, loaded with configuration options.</li><li>Pricing is very reasonable.</li><li>Fantastic form builder with integrated payments.</li></ul>Con's:<ul><li>To get all of the cool features such as stats and payment integration, you have to pay. Although if we weren't paying, we'd feel kind of guilty considering the amount of work put into this system.</li></ul>Overall, LightCMS is one astoundingly agile platform. It's fast, intuitive, easy, packed full of options and VERY reasonably priced.  We highly recommend it.

LightCMS Review

The SilverStripe team have launched a free extension to SilverStripe CMS that makes it easier to build websites for mobile devices. This is a great trend we've been seeing lately and we're keeping a close eye as more and more CMS vendors move to adapt to the new mobile web.
<blockquote>Most websites now have a noticeable amount of visitors using mobile devices. We've been looking at how to make it easier to build websites that can be accessed through popular mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Google Android phones.
The result is the SilverStripe Mobile Module. Once installed, it provides out of the box functionality to render an SilverStripe CMS website using a mobile-optimised theme, with the page width, font size, and menu layout designed for a small screen.
While you can certainly use this out of the box theme, it's mainly supplied so that someone familiar with HTML and CSS can customise the theme to suit your intended look and feel.
The module also provides:

<li>Automatic detection of mobile devices so that you can automatically redirect people to a mobile-optimised website.</li>

SilverStripe's templating language has meant developing mobile templates has always been possible. However, there is considerable effort in achieving cross-browser compatibility across mobile devices. The goal for this module is to reduce the time it takes people to build websites optimised for browsing by mobile devices. It's not intended to grow into a module that allows people on mobile phones to perform content authoring (although we do see that this could be useful for certain CMS tasks, like approving a request from a colleague to publish website content.)</blockquote>
At this stage, the mobile module is in beta. This means they are inviting people to download, test, and offer feedback on the module. Once they've incorporated your feedback, they hope to release the module confidently knowing that it provides website developers with a stable and useful tool for quickly creating mobile-optimised websites.

SilverStripe mobile development has just become easier

The first alpha release of TYPO3 4.5 has been announced and we're having a contest for TYPO3 developers (or users). Today, the TYPO3 community released the first alpha version of TYPO3 4.5. This marks the start of our journey to the first TYPO3 release ever to have long term support (LTS). Release 4.5.0 will be ready by January 2011. This alpha version is a “developer snapshot” to show the progress so far.
What happened so far?
After the kick-off for the 4.5 development during the TYPO3 Developer Days 2010 on July the release team consisting of Ernesto Baschny (release manager) and Steffen Kamper (technical leader) started contacting individuals and teams that were already working on projects that were planned for inclusion in 4.5.
The release team decided to hold weekly meetings together with the TYPO3 product manager (Ben van ‘t Ende) and the core team leaders. These meetings turned out to improve productivity of the team a lot.
Development progress

TYPO3 CMS 4.5alpha1 released and we're having a contest!

Team Jaws have announced a new version of their open-source CMS, Jaws.  If you haven't used Jaws, it's a very simple and unique (and small!) CMS that you should definitely at least try once to see if it fits your needs. A new version of the popular open-source social networking CMS, Elgg has been released!  1.7.2 is primarily a bugfix release.
Here is a brief list of some of the more annoying bugs that were squashed:
<ul>
<li>Saving drafts and previewing blogs works as expected.</li>
<li>Page titles can now be edited in the Pages plugin.</li>
<li>Group names no longer show up in Friends Collections.</li>
<li>Added a group member listing page.</li>
<li>Group forum topics can be edited.</li>
<li>User data for usernames with UTF8 characters are correctly migrated to the new data scheme.</li>
</ul>
Plugin developers will be pleased to know that a number of bugs in the API were also fixed.  These include:
<ul>
<li>Numerous bug fixes to the elgg_get_*() functions.</li>
<li>Added a generic email sending function (elgg_send_email()).</li>
<li>Added ability to remove river items by ID (remove_from_river_by_id()).</li>
<li>Added a generic excerpt function (elgg_get_excerpt()).</li>
</ul>

Elgg, the open source social networking CMS announced version 1.7.2

The Umbraco team have announced that Umbraco 4.5.2 beta which fixes 46 bugs that have been reported by our awesome community. Please download it today and help us test it so we can get a fast release. You'll find a full change log in the downloads.
This brings the total number of bug fixes up to 88 since we released Umbraco 4.5 two months ago. There's no way we could have achieved this without the many people who've helped testing, reporting and submitting patches to the issues. Thanks a million!
With Umbraco 4.5.2 we'll finally have an ultra stable version of Umbraco 4.5!
In retrospect – did we release v4.5 too fast?
With almost a hundred bug fixes in just two months it's tempting to question whether we should have released v4.5 at all. It's hard to say as most of the issues was reported after Umbraco 4.5 was released and we've had a beta versions for quite some time. There'll always be bugs in software and when you push the release button is always a question of when it's good enough. If you never push the button, there'll never be a release.
However, I personally think we made a couple of mistakes. That's alright. If we turn the mistakes into lessons learned it means progress for the team and the project. And we're doing our very best to learn. Here's what we've found so far:
<ul>
<li>First of all our test cases were too simple, too narrow and didn't change at all. We had a checklist of various editing actions in combination with testing the Runway and Creative Website Starter packages. This was very helpful in order to find and fix bugs along the way, but this should have been combined with random install of community packages in the Repository.</li>
<li>Unit testing won't find everything. With Umbraco 4.5 we finally added a testing suite with more than 100 unit tests and loads of hidden bugs were found. However, a simple test suite will never be able to cover the many scenarios where Umbraco is used and as such should only be a foundation. This is a no-brainer, yet crucial to remember. With the many things covered by unit tests, there's no longer a Core Team member not believing in Unit tests as heaven sent. But robots will always be the smartest of idiots.</li>
<li>Enthusiasm is awesome but never overshadow the pursuit of attention to detail. One of the things that always have given me the biggest thrill is when tiny details in Umbraco gets improved. In the enthusiasm of the major UI and performance enhancements added to Umbraco 4.5 it was (too) easy to forget this craving for nano management. But it's one of the things makes Umbraco special – even though it can seem silly to spend days on minor things. heck, I even wrote a blog post about this four years ago.</li>
<li>Don't live in a silo. While Umbraco might work perfect for the scenarios used by members of the Core Team, we're only a fraction of the active users. This means that we should be much better to use 3rd party implementations, packages and un-official “tricks” when testing a release. In addition to this, we should involve 3rd party package developers as early as possible and help with a plan on how to ensure that their packages work when we release. Today an Umbraco implementation is often the sum of the Core combined with a number of packages. If they don't work together it can leave a beautiful Core useless.</li>
<li>Raise the community to take even more responsibility. As a community member who's business depending on Umbraco, it's only natural to become disillusioned when a new release doesn't work, forces you to change habits or makes an upgrade impossible. Believe me, the Core Team have no intention on doing this on purpose and it hurts badly when seeing people frustrated. But we're no better than the information given us. So be active. Tell us about what doesn't work and log issues in the Codeplex issue tracker with thorough steps to reproduce. Good bug reports take a lot of effort but in return you get better software. And even better – participate in our beta programs. Many of the bugs reported and fixed the past two months could have been discovered weeks before the release if only we had gotten help with better and more extensive testing. So help us, helping you.</li>
</ul>
We'll use this knowledge while we're building Umbraco 5. You'll see more blog postings, more videos and more documentation about the next version than ever before. We've learned a lesson.

BigBlueButton and Multilingual Improvements Emerge from TikiFest Ottawa
At the most recent TikiFest in Ottawa, Canada, several Tiki Community members met to socialize and contribute their talents to the future of Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware. For four days (August 15 – 18), the attendees (including several remote participants) discussed, planned, and coded many features and enhancements planned for Tiki 6.
The TikiFest ended with a wine-and-cheese social at the Code Factory in Ottawa, hosted by Citadel Rock, Blindside Networks, Pondstone Communications, and AvanTech.net, all of whom are active participants in the Tiki and BigBlueButton communities.
The cornerstone of the TikiFest was to improve the integration between Tiki and BigBlueButton that was first introduced in Tiki 5. Additionally, a full day of the event was reserved for various internationalization (i18n) topics, including:

<li> Establishing a collaborative multilingual glossary</li>
<li> Creating a translation server</li>
<li> Making it easier for the Tiki Community to contribute translations</li>
</ul>

BigBlueButton and Multilingual Improvements Emerge from TikiFest  Ottawa

e107 v.0.7.23 is now available. This release is primarily aimed at reducing vulnerabilities and increasing e107's protection against exploits. (a special thank you to Justin Klein Keane (“MadIrish”) for alerting us to the vulnerabilities, and commenting on the fixes.) One of the changes will also affect users who include youtube videos or other embedded media within their site; please see the included readme for more information.
This release also includes some minor feature enhancements:
Download Flood Protection (simultaneous downloads) Found in admin under downloads-&gt;options. Option to prevent a user from downloading multiple files within a short time-period.
YouTube bbcode ([youtube][/youtube]) Allows you to easily add youtube videos to pages of your website. A conversion script is provided for those who have utilized html-code from Youtube already and wish to convert to the bbcode equivalent. (see included README.txt for details). By default, ‘dangerous' HTML (such as the 'embed' code used with many media) is neutralised when it is displayed. This traps malicious code that may have entered the database before the latest updates were put in place. This filter can be disabled through the preference ‘Filter HTML content'.
Language-pack Creator Found in admin under languages-&gt;tools. For those who are translating e107 into other languages, this tool will zip up your core language files into the standard language-pack format so that they can be shared easily with the e107 community. Important information on using this tool can be found <a href="http://wiki.e107.org/index.php?title=How_can_I_post_my_e107_language_file%3F">here</a>.
Support for security include scripts. e107 now supports 3rd-Party security includes such as ZB Block without having to manually modify core scripts. Just install them in your root directory as you would normally. To include ZB Block, you would add the following to e107_config.php: $CLASS2_INCLUDE = ‘zbblock/zbblock.php'; . e107 would then automatically include it in every page of your site.

The Plone 4.0 Framework Team and release manager Eric Steele are pleased to announce the first release candidate for Plone 4.0.
Plone 4.0 brings massive performance and scalability improvements, a brand new default theme, and a revamped user interface.

Other new features include:

<li>An improved first-run experience, particularly creating a new Plone site</li>
<li>Streamlined user account creation and extensible member profiles</li>
<li>Upgraded infrastructure: Plone now runs on Python 2.6 and Zope 2.12 making for easier deployment and a smaller memory footprint</li>
<li>Built-in file-system storage for Image and File content types makes databases with large binaries easier to manage</li>
<li>Pop-up forms for login and many management functions</li>
<li>TinyMCE visual editor improves formatted text editing</li>
<li>Full-text indexing of East Asian languages</li>
<li>Group dashboards</li>
<li>The new standard theme utilizes a flexible, grid-based layout that provides a better base for clean, modern theming</li>
<li>Hundreds of bug fixes and tweaks</li>
<li>A well-tested upgrader that makes upgrading from Plone 3 fast and easy</li>
<li>Performance increases that nearly double pages per second in typical situations.</li>
</ul>
How you can help
Release candidates serve as proposed final releases for the project.  While Plone 4.0 has been tested by many members of the Plone developer community, and is already running in production on a number of sites, it needs wider testing to flush out any remaining critical bugs before we can stamp it as a “final release.”  And that's where we need you.
Here's what you can do to help:

<li>Test our installer packages by downloading and installing Plone 4.0 RC1 from the <a href="http://plone.org/products/plone/releases/4.0">Plone 4.0 downloads page</a>.</li>
<li>Help us test the upgrade scripts by migrating a copy of your site's data.</li>
<li>Report any errors to the Plone bug tracker.</li>
