Not All Heroes Wear Capes. Here's Why CMS Is Your 'Unsung Hero' in 2025

Now in its fifth year, the Award has been adapted from the established Open Source CMS Award with the wider aim of encouraging, supporting, recognizing and rewarding all Open Source projects.
WordPress won the 2009 Open Source Content Management System (CMS) Award in what was a very close contest with MODx and SilverStripe. While MODx was the first runner up, SilverStripe, a Most Promising CMS Award winner in 2008, made its way to the second runner up position in its first year in the Open Source CMS Award final.
The 2010 Award will feature a prize fund of $24,000 with several new categories introduced. While the Open Source CMS Award category will continue to recognize the best content management system, Packt is introducing categories for the Most Promising Open Source Project, Open Source E-Commerce Applications, Open Source JavaScript Libraries and Open Source Graphics Software.  CMSes that won the Overall CMS Award in previous years will continue to compete against one another in the Hall of Fame CMS category.
These new categories will ensure that the Open Source Awards is the ultimate platform to recognise excellence within the community while supporting projects both new and old. “We believe that the adaption of the Award and the new categories will provide a new level of accessibility, with the Award recognizing a wider range of Open Source projects; both previous winners while at the same time, encouraging new projects” said Julian Copes, organizer of this year’s Awards.

Hycus CMS 1.0.0 Released

Contao (formerly Typolight) version 2.9.1 is available. The maintenance release includes an important front-end cache fix, a front-end preview link fix, and various accessibility fixes. It also fixes an XSS vulnerability in one of the framework functions, so an update is highly recommended.

Ektron Inc. announced a 37 percent gain in revenue for the first half of 2010 over the first half of 2009. Ektron Reports 37% 1H Revenue Gains, Begins Q3 2010 With 45% Growth

KnowledgeTree has recently been making headlines here on CMS Critic with their recent shift to a SaaS based document management platform and we decided to take some time to find out the reasons for their move. In this interview with CEO, Daniel Chalef, we discuss the reasons behind the move to SaaS and his vision for the future of document management, among other topics of interest.

CC: Can you give our readers a bit of a basic rundown as to how you came to be with KnowledgeTree and a bit about your background

DC: Mike, the genesis of KnowledgeTree was a product developed for a South African customer by a South African systems integrator. At the time I was CTO of the SI and we decided to open source the results of the project.
We put the project up on to SourceForge.net and started seeing many thousands of downloads per month and we figured there was a business model to be had.
We subsequently started up a company in the US, of which I became the CEO, and redeveloped the software which is the incarnation of KnowledgeTree's document management solution that is available online today.
CC: Interesting. Compared to competing DMS products, what do you think made KnowledgeTree peak the interest of potential customers/users?
DC: To business users:
<ul>
<li>simplicity</li>
<li>fast time to value (i.e. what equipment, people, configuration and customization, and training is required to start seeing value from the product)</li>
<li>affordability versus very expensive enterprise content management suites.</li>
</ul>
For technologists running KnowledgeTree on-premise:
<ul>
<li>The accessibility of KnowledgeTree's code. Being written in PHP it is easy to modify and extend</li>
<li>The fact that KnowledgeTree is delivered as a service, a cloud offering, really assists both business users and technologists with seeing value very quickly</li>
</ul>
KnowledgeTree is designed to allow users to quickly start managing documents online, and to go beyond other basic content management services available today in in allowing users to manage their document lifecycle with tools such as workflow and contracts management features.
KnowledgeTree also has pretty neat integration with Microsoft Office applications, the desktop and even HTML5 drag and drop.
CC: Can you explain a bit further how your customers see benefit from moving to your platform now that it's SaaS based? What is the primary difference to the end user between a SaaS cloud offering and a locally managed install, in your opinion?
DC: Document management as a Service provides the following benefits:
<ul>
<li>Customers don't need to make capital expenditure on equipment and software;</li>
<li>The software can be implemented immediately, without requiring IT's assistance, reducing IT's workload and streamlining the purchasing process</li>
<li>their content is stored securely, with many vendors servicing customers out of datacenters that have undergone stringent physical and logical security certifications (such as SAS70 Type II certification) often this level of security is higher than their own infrastructure</li>
<li>coupled with security, DM as a service provides for very high availability and data integrity – again, the massive redundancy available on cloud infrastructure often far exceeds what a customer can economically implement themselves</li>
<li>In a mobile, or geographically dispersed workforce, a customer can ensure that all knowledge workers can access content from wherever they may be, without having to lay on additional network connectivity into their own datacenters.</li>
</ul>
Additionally, with software as a service, all upgrades and improvements are managed by the vendor, and this further reduces the burden on internal IT teams, and ensures that the customer is always running the latest, most capable and most secure product.
CC: Those are certainly compelling reasons. You mentioned the mobile workforce.. how well does KT integrate with the increasing number of mobile platforms on the market?
DC: Our web interface can be used from Webkit based phones (Android, iOS) and we have Android and iOS apps in the works.
CC: What is your vision for the next 5 years as to how people will be interacting with and manipulating their data? Do you see a change with regards to how it is being accessed? Do you anticipate more mobile applications coming into play? How is KnowledgeTree preparing itself for these shifts in the way content is managed?
DC: We will have greatly increased need to manage content. Currently, very few organizations are managing all sources of content – IM, social streams (whether generated internally, or on external social platforms), the majority of email etc are not currently managed, with adverse effects on an organization's ability to manage risk.
This problem is only going to increase and often times, the burden of doing so is too large (expensive) to manage centrally. As a result, line of business managers are often bearing the costs, both in terms of risk and in terms of operating efficiency. The costs of managing this explosion of content have until now been very significant, primarily due to two factors: available software, and the model the software was taken to market.
The available software has been expensive, difficult to implement and difficult for the line of business to maintain. It's required expensive consultants to configure, and often manage and the software was only available on-premise – with all the associated capital investment required in physical infrastructure.
Alongside the explosion of content, we've also seen the rise of cloud computing. Storage costs and computing costs have plummeted and software running on that cloud infrastructure has taken cues from consumer software:
<ul>
<li>It's become accessible for business users, with easy to use interfaces, the removal of “tech” or “ECM industry” geek-speak.</li>
<li>It's also mobile and accessible</li>
</ul>
So going forward, business users will grow ever more empowered to manage their own content, drive efficiency within their line of business, and manage risk.
Some very practical examples:
A CFO in a 200 person company no longer requires the implementation of an expensive on-premise ECM and document capture solution to manage the workflow around invoicing, purchase orders, and accounts payable.
Document management as a service offerings, such as KnowledgeTree, allows the CFO herself to build workflows, integrate on-premise scanners etc that support the above uses, all from a very accessible (as in easy to use, free of jargon) web UI.
You've got me started, but I can go on if you'd like ? It's a topic I quite enjoy.
 
CC: You recently wrote an article on the KnowledgeTree blog entitled “<a href="http://www.knowledgetree.com/blog/idc-saas-momentum-skyrocketing">Is traditional software dead?</a>” in which you pointed to some numbers by IDC that showed a steady decline in the licensed software model that most corporations have been tied to for years.
What methods are being employed by KnowledgeTree to assist these users with large time and customization investments in place with their current software to move to your platform?
DC: We are building technology that assists customers with migrating their content, and broader taxonomy (metadata, workflows, etc) from on-premise to the cloud.
We positively want to make it as smooth as possible for a customer to get from their existing legacy ECM app to KnowledgeTree in the cloud.
Already in place, we have technologies that assist organizations with putting large volumes of content in the cloud, either as the bare documents themselves, or with some migration development of XML files, the documents and their metadata.
So we have some tech already in place, and are building more to ensure a smooth migration.
CC: Has KnowledgeTree seen a growth in adoption due to this decline of late?
DC: Yes, we have seen strong interest from customer organizations for a SaaS / cloud solution and from surprising places that have validated our belief that mid-market organizations are very ready to see the benefits of SaaS. The sizes and types of organizations we are seeing certainly indicate the coming of age of SaaS.
CC: Do you feel that Knowledgetree has a leg up on it's competitors when it comes to the migration to a SaaS based solution?
DC: Our Hot Folders technology, which is specifically designed to assist with this process has certainly been well received by our user community.
CC: Can you describe Hot Folders a bit for us?
DC: It monitors a folder for files or folders and releases them into the KnowledgeTree service. What's cool about it is that it can work as simply as that, or you can train your scanner, fax server, or even other line of business apps such as accounting apps, to output an XML file alongside the document.
This file describes the document in more detail, perhaps providing a barcode, a customer number or similar. This metadata is then associated with the document in the KnowledgeTree repository. You can then report on documents added to the repsoitory, based on that metadata, using KnowledgeTree's search engine or even kick off a workflow that manages the newly added documents through their lifecycle.
For example, newly scanned in invoices could go through an approval cycle before being paid. 
This very same technology can be leveraged when migrating from a legacy on-premise ECM application to KnowledgeTree in the cloud. That is, your existing metadata can be migrated alongside the documents themselves.
CC: Thank you. Back in June, you mentioned an upcoming launch of Salesforce.com integration. When can users expect to see this and what other integrations are in the works, if any?
DC: We are able to right now provide it to customer organizations who'd like to try out the beta and will be publishing it on the AppExchange later this quarter.
We have a number of other line of business application integrations in our sights, and will be announcing these over the next few months. Our lightweight and easy to use REST interfaces do already provide a powerful mechanism for custom integration efforts that customers or partners would like to undertake.
CC: It sounds like KnowledgeTree is well positioned to be even more of a contender in the market. Where do you see the company in the next 5 years?
DC: Continuing to deliver great, innovative software that our customers enjoy using, and see significant value from, and with that, healthy growth that we and our investors can be proud of ?
CC: Can you share with us whom some of your largest or more recognizable customers are?
DC: We're proud to have a number of very recognizable organizations using KnowledgeTree. 
These cover federal agencies, such as the US GSA, the FAA, DoJ, etc to companies including folks such as Virgin America, Papa John's Pizza, and IBM. We also have a whole bunch of universities using our software.

Interview with Daniel Chalef, CEO of KnowledgeTree

KnowledgeTree Expands Integration with Zoho

Xenia Von Wedel from SocialRadius recently did a Q&amp;A with CEO Interview Elie Auvray, to get a feeling what the Adobe / Day Software means for the Content Management market in general, and for Jahia in particular and decided to share her interview with our readers. Thanks Xenia!
Xenia Von Wedel: The announced Adobe acquisition of Day Software, a WCM competitor of yours, strikes us as a bit odd. What does WCM have to do with graphics tools?
Elie Auvray: First of all, I would like to congratulate the Day team for an outstanding deal. It is also a great recognition of the value provided by next-generation WCMs, so we at Jahia are happy about that as well. 
The acquisition makes sense for Adobe, as it allows them to cover the whole value chain from content creation to its management and publication across any channel. Day will be the framework Adobe lacked for their enterprise offerings.
Xenia Von Wedel: They say that “Day customers will be able to leverage more interactive application and document capabilities from Adobe® AIR®, Adobe® Flash®, Flex, Adobe® LiveCycle® and PDF” – can’t they do that with Jahia as well?
Elie Auvray: Yes, a number of our customers already integrated some of Adobe’s flagship products with Jahia. Even through Adobe products aren’t open source, they are very interoperable – if they weren’t nobody would use them.
Xenia Von Wedel: Will the acquisition give Day a competitive advantage over Jahia?
Elie Auvray: No. Once the acquisition by Adobe is approved by authorities, Day will be even more focused on what they call the “Customer Experience Platform”, which is but one facet of Jahia’s offerings. Our mission is to unite and present content, no matter where it comes from and no matter what’s its type. Therefore Jahia will still be the vendor of choice for customers who need to tie all their content together with a sophisticated front-end solution that makes all their information silos work together, smoothly. That is very different from the mission of the now Adobe-controlled “Customer Experience Platform”. Jahia will continue to champion robust open source standards and frameworks, such as the Apache foundation. We hope that Day will continue to contribute to these frameworks, but Adobe, quite frankly, hasn’t been the best promoter of standards in our industry, aside from their own.
Xenia Von Wedel: How do you think the acquisition will influence the content management market in general?
Elie Auvray: For the casual observer, it could seem that this acquisition is simply in line with the consolidation recent trends, starting with EMC-Documentum, then Open Text-Vignette and Autonomy-Interwoven – not to mention a myriad of smaller or more technology-oriented acquisitions.
But the Adobe-Day acquisition is unique in that it polarizes the market even more and, at the same time, it commoditizes so-called ECM solutions: By making Day the backbone of its content value chain (from creation to management and delivery) as opposed to Alfresco – which seemed the logical choice considering Alfresco’s OEM relationship with Adobe – Adobe validates that Content repositories are the new commodities, and that what really matters is the tools and composite applications that are capable of being repository-agnostic.
That is very good news for Jahia, as we’ve hammered that message since our inception. It’s not good news for pure document-centric vendors that built their entire core around more limited content types, such as documents and records.
I remember that John Newton, CTO of Alfresco, said at the 2009 Boston Gilbane Conference that “a WCM can live without a DMS but a DMS cannot live without a WCM”. Adobe’s move affirms the wisdom of that comment.
Xenia Von Wedel: What’s the relationship status between WCM and ECM?
Elie Auvray: User experience platforms like Fatwire, Day, and Jahia communicate with, rather than compete with ECM/DMS. That’s why connectors, REST interfaces, and standard like CMIS are so important.
At the end of the day, what matters is software that unifies those content silos. We think that Day is a great competitor for these reasons. It's good to face competition on such an innovative market, as it reinforces Jahia’s vision. As it is, customers shortlist us on a regular basis at the expense of Microsoft and other ECM and portal vendors that fail to deliver comparable value.
The relevance of this convergence, from a user perspective, came from Stephen Powers on January 22 of this year in “Web Content Management and Portal: Together at Last?”:
IBM is betting that the WCM and portal markets will converge and cease to be separate markets, with vendors offering combined WCM/portals suites that have one administrative tool set, one presentation management structure, one repository, and so on.
Xenia Von Wedel: Although Day Software is not open source, CTO David Nüscheler has a strong voice in the open source community. What impact will the acquisition have on the CMS community?
Elie Auvray: We really hope that David will continue to contribute to the open source community. Whether he can do it within Adobe remains to be seen, considering Adobe’s track record of strong, but not so open, products. Similar fears surfaced after Oracle acquired Sun, and the recent retirement of some of the standards Sun had shepherded should make us wary of Day’s future involvement with standards.
Xenia Von Wedel: How will the acquisition affect the remaining CMS players?
Elie Auvray: Our industry is maturing and consolidation is a natural and healthy evolution that serves the greater good: innovation. When an industry consolidates, it means yesterday’s innovations becomes today’s commodities, setting the stage for the next wave of disruption!
Xenia Von Wedel: Big companies tend to acquire, rather than innovate – can smaller players still play a vital role?
Elie Auvray: Yes. Smaller players are in the best position to innovate, since they are more nimble and technology-driven. Larger Software companies are tied to the short term imperatives of the stock market, focusing on maintenance revenues as opposed to the next big thing.
Xenia Von Wedel: Day Software and Jahia are competing in the same high-end/Enterprise CMS space – does Jahia still stand a chance considering the massive sales power Adobe brings to Day?
Elie Auvray: Blue chip companies often pick Jahia over much larger software vendors for a simple reason: our software relieves their pains faster and it costs them much less.
That has nothing to do with in-house sales power. What sales power does is to bring more opportunities. Our indirect sales model serves us well in that regard: 60% of our software-related revenue is brought by partners, and some of them have tremendous sales power. Our job is to make the best product that our partners can easily deploy and put in front of more and more customers.
Xenia Von Wedel: Conversely, will the acquisition give Jahia a price or flexibility advantages?
Elie Auvray: There has already been a lot of debate among pundits on the acquisition’s impact on the price of Day’s licenses: the short answer is no one really knows!
Xenia Von Wedel: Day Software and Jahia both say that content is everything – what are Jahia’s differentiators?
Elie Auvray: Yes, Jahia and Day share the same vision around what content really is. What we bring is an added dimension of “whatever the source or type ,” – be it a PDF stored in Alfresco, Documentum, or Sharepoint, a JSR 286 portlet, a mashup, a widget, an RSS feed or an open social gadget — these are all natively managed and supported objects in Jahia.
The market used to be divided – and still is, to a certain extent – among ECM, DMS, Portal, WCM, mashups, and other content silos, due to technical incompatibilities. This causes great confusion among users, integrators, and customers when they have to select the right product for their project.
This divide no longer makes sense, since projects must now use multiple components, or “content composites”, to fulfill customer requirements.
Xenia Von Wedel: Could you tell us more about these “content composites”?
Elie Auvray: Content Composites will make your website, portal, extranet, intranet, Enterprise 2.0, or whatever the name project much more flexible. At the end of the day it's all about what you want to do with these content-rich applications; but the core features required to deliver such solutions are basically the same. Content composites are small parts of a web site such as: Articles, files, document list, breadcrumb path, tag cloud, collaborative application, document sharing, social interactions through comments, votes, wikis, forums, and blogs: it's only a question of what, when and how you want to aggregate those content objects within your web solution.
This is consistent with our vision from day one: that all these objects should be integrated into an intuitive and unified web interface, where webmasters, content producers, and even developers can work efficiently without having to worry about the type of content or composite, or where it comes from.
We called this “web content integration”: combining WCM, DMS, and portal features in a unified web platform that communicates seamlessly with complementary third party software. Our next version, Jahia 6.5, will deliver the latest evolution of this concept in the most powerful Composite Content Platform in the market today.
Xenia Von Wedel: How do you envision the future?
Elie Auvray: Information (collective knowledge) is the most important asset companies have, after their people. As a matter of fact, Adobe products are key in our industry. But the real value is content. Not the file type, the tools or the technology.
Information –wherever it comes from- needs to be controlled and accessible not only from anywhere, but also smartly leveraged across different sites and applications. Ubiquitous digital content must be freed from technological limitations. This is the challenge confronting next-generation WCMs like Day and Jahia.

Adobe - Day: Acquisition or Big push for the Content Management Market?

ocProducts are pleased to announce the full release of ocPortal Version 5, our highly advanced web content management system. This follows a short release candidate version. This version introduces a number of bug fixes, new features, usability improvements, and a wide-sweeping design overhaul since version 4.3.2.
There are a number of key changes and additions within this version of the software; The Admin zone has been given an overhaul including new drop down menus and a much more useful front page. Design change highlights include :

<li>The member profile screen has been completely redesigned</li>
<li>A restructuring of the member points screen, making the points system far more intuitive.</li>

We have given an overhaul to commenting, RSS and ratings features. These include allowing guests to choose a display name and improving the previewing of reviews. ocPortal version 5 has been thoroughly tested with IE6 and should display properly on this browser. We do however expect to drop support for IE6 once IE9 is released.
We have put a great deal of work into the ocPortal themeing system, with the aim of making it much easier for users to make their site look just how they want it to. Users can now preview all of the templates they are working on without needing switch between several screens. Other themeing features include making it easier to edit the site logo across all zones &amp; themes, alongside new CSS styled buttons. In addition to the aforementioned template screen preview system, you can methodically work through all the screens in the system in order to ensure your theme looks good.
The ocPortal gallery system has seen a raft of changes, including an improved edit screen and the ability to provide automatic video transcoding (this requires that ffmpeg is installed). There have also been changes and updates within the quiz feature, the events calendar, the catalogue system, the newsletter manager and CEDI.
We have added a new feature that we call “Real-time rain”, which allows you to visualise activity in your website, either in real-time or via historic playback, which you would otherwise only ever see in the form of plain-text logs. This feature is enormous fun for webmasters and is incredibly pretty.
We have made many more changes in addition to those listed above, which are too numerous to include here. A potential XSS vulnerability has been fixed with the latest Campsite release, which also improves session handling to avoid logged user session grabbing via CSRF attack. The vulnerability was discovered by High-Tech Bridge SA, Ethical Hacking &amp; Penetration Testing.
The developers have also taken this opportunity to improve the universal list function that allows the user to choose how to list articles in the admin interface and search those articles as well as further update the UI redesign. The next Campsite update is due at the end of August.

Campsite 3.4.1 Security Update Released

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and Day Software Holding AG (SIX: DAYN, OTCQX: DYIHY) announced the two companies have entered into a definitive agreement for Adobe to launch a public tender offer to acquire all of the publicly held registered shares of Day Software for CHF139 per share in cash in a transaction valued at approximately CHF255 million on a fully diluted equity-value basis. This approximates US$240 million at the current exchange rate.

The proposed offer represents a premium of 59 percent over Day’s volume-weighted average share price for the last 60 trading days.  The Board of Directors of Day unanimously recommends the offer to Day shareholders.  The Chairman and the CEO of Day and other Board members have entered into undertakings to tender their shares.
The completion of the transaction, which is subject to customary government approvals and the satisfaction of other customary conditions, including a minimum acceptance threshold with respect to the tender offer, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Adobe’s 2010 fiscal year.
Adobe expects the acquisition will have no material impact on Adobe’s non-GAAP earnings for fiscal year 2010 and that it will be accretive to non-GAAP earnings for fiscal year 2011.
