The New York Daily News, the most widely read newspaper in the largest media market in the United States, has signed a contract with Atex for a combined Content Management and Digital Asset Management system that will support all digital and print publishing channels. The Atex system will streamline the digital and print workflows for Daily News newsroom staff, providing a media-neutral environment to manage all Web, mobile, print and archived content.
“The Daily News selected Atex for its ability to deliver a platform-agnostic solution that enables users to access data effortlessly regardless of where that data may physically reside,” said Bill Holiber, Daily News President and CEO. “That flexibility allows us to increase operational efficiency and reduce costs without affecting the quality of the content and products we produce.”
With Atex, the Daily News’ editors will have a single system for all media types, including tablets and mobile devices, allowing content to move effortlessly between editorial platforms. By making content more accessible, the Atex system will accelerate the speed of content creation and editing to produce more stories in less time, including photos, graphics, audio and video content.
For archived content, the integrated Atex Digital Asset Management system will combine and organize published articles, photos, digital and print pages in a single database. Designed for Adoption Knowing the importance of a great experience to drive viral adoption, reduce training, and help users work faster, Open Text made significant user interface changes in ECM Suite 2010 based on the latest Web standards, continuing to make the software more intuitive, customizable and extendable to mobile devices. The new design lets users customize their experience, using custom columns, hiding unnecessary menus and creating personalized filters. The bsd-licensed HWIOS (<a href="http://hwios.org">http://hwios.org</a>) project was started rougly a year ago to provide an easy-to-use web-UI to the Opensimulator virtual world platform, which is quite hard to control for non-technical users. It was built from ideas and flaws that were gathered and discovered from it's php predecessor WiXTD. HWIOS is a python CMS that's built on top of frameworks like Twisted, Django, JQuery and friends. It's a rather unconventional CMS because it relies solely on XHR and websockets for data(JSON) transport; hence it doesn't use page refreshing.
The CMS offers distributed service management with javascript websocket consoles, an integrated webdav server for sharing Opensim archive files from several servers, a simple JSON chat-app, Opensim region management through a TMS mapping service with Openlayers map controls, and customized simulator configurations. The goal of the project is not exclusively to deliver only a web-ui for Opensim, but for HWIOS to become a general-use collaborative package for both e-learning and e-work purposes.
It's architecture is well suitable to provide realtime collaborative text-features and notification systems in today's applications like a wiki, the forum or news apps. It uses a two-way JSON-RPC router for easy delivering of data from client-server and vice-versa.
Another thing that's interesting to implement is the html5 canvas tag, that can be used for shared whiteboards, visualisation of data structures, and more. The amount of features in HWIOS is still limited because of a lack of developers. The current focus is to finish the wiki system, refactor and comment the code and add internationalisation. Developers who are interested can check out the code from the git repository.

MODx Revolution 2.0.2 Brings a Little More Speed and Lots of Little Fixes

It's that time again where we post our recommendations to various questions that are posed to us over the month.
This month we're going to provide you with options to consider if you are looking to start your own blog or small business website. Most of the systems we recommend below start off as blog platforms but can easily be extended to suit other CMS requirements.

While we are certainly aware that WordPress and Blogger are the two most popular blogging platforms on the market, that doesn't mean that they are the best. There are numerous other platforms out there that are worth checking out and we always enjoy finding new ones.
Here are a few recommended content management systems for blogging that we've tried and enjoy.
*Note: The systems below are not just for blogging, they are also very powerful CMS platforms. We simply classified them this way because they perform very well as blog platforms too!
Serendipity (also known as s9y)
Serendipity is an excellent blogging platform and when it comes to functionality, available plugins and stability, is quite a powerful system.  It doesn't stop at blogging, however. Serendipity is a very powerful CMS as well and can (and should) be used for other projects ranging from publishing to serving up your business' website.
Support is excellent and the developers are quick to (safely) adapt your requests which is a rarity in this type of market.

Pixie is a visually attractive, small and simple to use CMS that has been growing well the last few years. It's easy to install, a pleasant experience to use and very stable. Produced by Toggle, there aren't a huge number of plugins and themes but there are plenty to get the job done.
This is a fun system to use and we recommend you give it a whirl and see if it fits your needs. There is a demo available that you can play with, without installing anything.
Some features include:

<li>Easy to use installer that gives you options as to the site you wish to install. Looking to blog, select the blog package and the CMS will be customized for that purpose. Need a small business site, same applies.</li>
<li>Clean URL's and very good search engine friendly coding allow this CMS to perform well on your favourite search engine.</li>
<li>CSS themes – Pixie makes use of CSS for it's themes which opens up the door to thousands of freely available templates.</li>

glFusion is based on Geeklog, which is one of the oldest blogging and article publishing CMS available. Geeklog is a great system and well supported but the team at glFusion have taken things a step farther and provided very adaptable themes, extra plugins and very solid support. In our opinion, they have done a great job taking Geeklog to the next level and we suggest you try their product out if you haven't. It's free of course.

Looking for a little versatility to go with your coffee? Textpattern is the product for you. Designed to use template tags, this system is incredibly versatile. There are very few things that cannot be done with Textpattern. It takes a little getting used to but once you try it, it's hard to use anything else.
Not only is this system incredibly small but it's very, very fast. The admin interface can easily be themed and designing a system exactly the way you want is not difficult. There are plenty of plugins and the TXP community is a very active one.

The seventh alpha of Drupal 7 has been released

dotCMS announced today that it has made <a href="http://dotcms.com/downloads/">dotCMS 1.9.1</a> available. This follows the July 27 release of 1.9.
“We have never launched a point release with this number of new features,” commented Will Ezell, CTO of dotCMS. “I am very proud of our R&amp;D team, the Community and Partners for knocking this out 7 weeks after a major release.”
The major additions of 1.9.1 include:
