Newscoop 3.5.3, the open source content management system for professional journalists, was released by Sourcefabric on May 19th. Three is the magic number for Newscoop 3.5.3, with 33 bug fixes ranging from the powerful search interface, to the wysiwyg article edit screen, to the installation process itself.
Community bug reports led to a detailed examination and improvement of the way Newscoop handles lists of articles. A couple of issues relating to user permissions and selecting articles have been dealt with, but perhaps the most significant improvement relates to searching for content in translated issues. Search now pulls up all content from translated issues meaning it’s easier than ever before to manage multilingual sites.
Improvements to the TinyMCE editor performance mean article creation is now more stable. Reported bugs involving the HTML button unnecessarily cleaning code for embedded objects and an occasional failure to save content were identified and zapped. Upgrading also no longer creates an occasional error in the TinyMCE editor.
Newspapers interested in freemium, paywall or enhanced content models will be pleased to know ReCaptcha for Newscoop’s subscription feature is now implemented – bye-bye bots! Blog listings (blogs, entries, comments) were also improved with new pagination and a link to blog entries list added to make finding content easier.
Finally, install, login, backup and restore – the cornerstones of your system engineer’s happiness – all continue to be improved in an effort to make everything on the backend safer and easier to use.

CoreMedia, a leading Web content management (WCM) company, today announced it will showcase a contextualized e-commerce platform at the SAPPHIRE® NOW conference in Orlando, Fla., May 15-18. The showcase highlights CoreMedia’s best-of-breed WCM technology, CoreMedia CMS, used together with the SAP® Web Channel Experience Management application, to enable companies to turn the Internet into a profitable sales, marketing and service channel by incorporating contextualized content into the e-commerce experience, and making it accessible via all consumer touchpoints and devices.
With continued growth of online retail spending, the e-commerce experience has evolved beyond simply transacting; consumers are increasingly using retail sites to discover new products, conduct research and price comparisons and exchange feedback. This creates an opportunity for retailers to forge deeper, more profitable relationships with their customers, but requires a comprehensive e-commerce platform that can support all Web channel processes while dynamically personalizing each customer’s online experience. CoreMedia will demonstrate how retailers can optimize the e-commerce channel by incorporating relevant content into their product data to create a stickier, more informative browsing experience for current shoppers and attract new users searching for interesting content. The demo will show how the right mix of product and contextualized content that takes into account both implicit and explicit user data can eliminate the gap between a company’s website and retail store to increase up-sell and cross-sell opportunities and strengthen customer loyalty.
Details on the showcase are as follows:
WHAT: CoreMedia and SAP Web Channel Experience Management showcase WHERE: Booth # 210; SAPPHIRE NOW, Orange County Convention Center, Orlando WHEN: May 15-18

Percussion Software, a leading provider of web content management (WCM) software, today announced that its CM1 WCM platform has been selected as a finalist in the Best User Experience category for the MITX Innovation Awards. Held annually by the Massachusetts Innovation &amp; Technology Exchange, the MITX Innovation Awards celebrates the innovations powering the future of marketing and revolutionizing the way we work and play. CM1 was selected due to its innovative and easy-to-use functionality that empowers business users to quickly build feature-rich, next-generation websites, without extensive IT assistance.
“This year's finalists blew us away with their creativity, ingenuity and passion for innovation. They are truly reflective of the many exciting things that are driving our industry right now,” said MITX president, Debi Kleiman. “We're proud to showcase the region's top innovations through this Awards program — giving these innovators a place to shout loud and proud about what they've achieved.”
Percussion's CM1 system transforms the content management experience for organizations with complex content requirements and that lack the scale required to deploy and maintain a traditional WCM software package. CM1 was designed to allow marketing teams to quickly build and manage highly interactive, social, scalable websites, and open content contribution to users across the organization. CM1's advanced user interface allows non-technical users to take control of content, and return ownership of web content management to the content owner.
“Social, mobile, community, and other forces are converging to require that organizations expand their digital footprint farther than ever before,” said Joseph Wykes, President, Percussion Software. “CM1's intuitive user interface gives content owners the control required to rapidly scale the number of content contributors and broaden their reach online, enabling them to increase traffic and drive revenue. These innovations are central to the strategy for our full range of platforms and we're honored that MITX has recognized the power and innovation behind CM1 with our selection as a finalist.”
Percussion will be recognized with the other finalists in the category of Best User Experience at the ceremony traditionally attended by over 350 of the region's top interactive marketing and technology professionals. Winners will be announced at the ceremony in the Westin Boston Waterfront on Thursday, June 16th at 6pm. Tickets can be purchased at www.mitxawards.org/innovation.
The 2011 MITX Awards are sponsored by: Digitas, Isobar, The Atom Group, DLA Piper, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Boston Innovation, and Metropolis Creative.

The Netherlands Board of Tourism &amp; Conventions (NBTC) implements a global customer-centric marketing approach based on GX WebManager. This new content management system will generate more website traffic and improve conversion rates. GX Software, global provider of online marketing software solutions, and NBTC announce the migration of the NBTC website to a new CMS (GX WebManager). The NBTC is the leading marketing organization for the promotion of leisure and business travel to and within Holland.
Their challenge is to promote Holland, both domestically and internationally, in a world in which boundaries are becoming increasingly more blurred, information channels are becoming clogged, and new destinations present themselves. A new beta of ExpressionEngine CMS has been released to the public.  The most significant change in this release is the move to storing file information in the database. The release also includes includes over 50 bug fixes, the removal of the Blogger API module, as well as the addition of some feature requests.
File Upload Preferences have been moved from the Admin section to the File Manager, and a new permission has been added to control who accesses upload preferences.  Also added is the ability to set ‘thumbnail’ image sizes and watermark preferences per upload directory.  These thumbnails will be created whenever a new image file is uploaded.
A simple ‘Synchronization’ on the File Upload Preferences page allows you to have all files in that directory imported into the database, with the appropriate thumbnails added.  You’ll want to synchronize your files as soon as you’re done updating!
Significant changes have also occurred within the file upload modal, which is now used in both the File Manager and the Publish page.  Expect more changes here as we add back image manipulation, category and other metadata fields, and greater flexibility when using the new thumbnail features.
There are several known issues with this release:
<ul>
<li>The ‘File’ module is available in the installable modules, though tags are not yet available for frontend use</li>
<li>Editing images is not yet reflected in the database records and can result in improper dimensions used in system generated HTML when an edited image is inserted into a textarea field</li>
<li>The Profiler is displayed during a new install or update</li>
</ul>
They are aiming for a stable release in June so if you are able, test it out. You can get more information on <a href="http://expressionengine.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ExpressionEngine.com</a>

ExpressionEngine CMS 2.1.5 Beta Released

In preparation for a potential June launch of a stable version, WordPress has begun working on version 3.2.  Today, they released the first beta of this upcoming release for testing. From the announcement:
<blockquote>

It seems like just yesterday that we released WordPress 3.1, but it’s actually been almost three months. We’ve spent that time putting together a new release focused on performance improvements, and are ready for our first beta testers!
As always, this is software still in development and we don’t recommend that you run it on a production site — set up a test site just to play with the new version. If you break it (find a bug), please report it, and if you’re a developer, try to help us fix it.
If all goes well, we hope to release WordPress 3.2 by the end of June, though that is (again, as always) subject to change depending on how the beta period goes. The more help we get with testing and fixing bugs, the sooner we will be able to release the final version. If you want to be a beta tester, you should check out the Codex article on <a href="http://codex.wordpress.org/Reporting_Bugs" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">how to report bugs</a>.
Here’s some of what’s new:
<ul>
<li>Performance improvements like you wouldn’t believe. What’s that mean? Things are faster!</li>
<li>Distraction-free Writing. The visual editor’s full-screen composing experience has gotten a major overhaul, and is now available from HTML mode, too. More than ever, WordPress allows you to focus on what matters most — your content.</li>
<li>Admin UI Refresh. The last major redesign of the WordPress admin was in 2008. This isn’t a major redesign, just a little facelift to keep us feeling young. WordPress turns 8 later this month, you know.</li>
<li>New Default Theme. Introducing Twenty Eleven, based on the popular Duster theme. Rotating header images, post format support, and more.</li>
<li>Browse Happy. WordPress is made to work with modern browsers. If you visit your Dashboard using an outdated web browser, we’ll let you know there’s a newer version available.</li>
<li>Admin Bar. We’ve added more links to the admin bar to make it even more useful.</li>
</ul>
Be Aware:
<ul>
<li>WordPress has new system requirements: PHP 5.2.4 and MySQL 5.0.</li>
<li>Internet Explorer 6 will no longer be supported.</li>
<li>The favorites menu has been removed. If you’ve written any plugins that use this menu, it’s time to switch over to an admin bar placement.</li>
</ul>
Known Issues:
<ul>
<li>We haven’t updated the blue admin color scheme yet, so do your testing in the gray zone for best results.</li>
</ul>
Remember, if you find something you think is a bug, report it! You can bring it up in the <a href="http://wordpress.org/support/forum/alphabeta" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">alpha/beta forum</a>, you can email it to the <a href="http://lists.automattic.com/mailman/listinfo/wp-testers" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wp-testers list</a>, or if you’ve confirmed that other people are experiencing the same bug, you can report it on the <a href="http://core.trac.wordpress.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">WordPress Core Trac</a>. (I recommend starting in the forum or on the mailing list.)
Theme and plugin authors, if you haven’t been following the 3.2 development cycle, please start now so that you can update your themes and plugins to be compatible with the newest version of WordPress.
Note to developers: WordPress is built by the contributions of hundreds of developers. If you’d like to see this release come out on time, I encourage you to pitch in. Even if you don’t have time to do testing on the beta version, you could help us by contributing a fix for one of the many bugs we already know about.
