The New York Daily News, the most widely read newspaper in the largest media market in the United States, has signed a contract with Atex for a combined Content Management and Digital Asset Management system that will support all digital and print publishing channels. The Atex system will streamline the digital and print workflows for Daily News newsroom staff, providing a media-neutral environment to manage all Web, mobile, print and archived content.
“The Daily News selected Atex for its ability to deliver a platform-agnostic solution that enables users to access data effortlessly regardless of where that data may physically reside,” said Bill Holiber, Daily News President and CEO. “That flexibility allows us to increase operational efficiency and reduce costs without affecting the quality of the content and products we produce.”
With Atex, the Daily News’ editors will have a single system for all media types, including tablets and mobile devices, allowing content to move effortlessly between editorial platforms. By making content more accessible, the Atex system will accelerate the speed of content creation and editing to produce more stories in less time, including photos, graphics, audio and video content.
For archived content, the integrated Atex Digital Asset Management system will combine and organize published articles, photos, digital and print pages in a single database. This will allow Daily News’ users to search the entire archive from a common user interface, making it easier to find and repurpose content for new digital initiatives.
“We believe in putting control of digital and print workflows directly into the hands of editorial staff,” said Atex Senior Vice President, Peter Marsh. “This philosophy is ingrained in our system architecture and our implementation process. As a result, the Daily News will have an agile newsroom environment that provides a single view of all live and archived content, with the ability to efficiently publish to print editions, NYDN.com, as well as mobile and e-reader channels.”

Purpose-Built Portal and Software-as-a-Service Solution Provider Fuz1on Launches Today

It's that time again where we post our recommendations to various questions that are posed to us over the month.
This month we're going to provide you with options to consider if you are looking to start your own blog or small business website. Most of the systems we recommend below start off as blog platforms but can easily be extended to suit other CMS requirements.
<h2>Blogging</h2>
While we are certainly aware that WordPress and Blogger are the two most popular blogging platforms on the market, that doesn't mean that they are the best. There are numerous other platforms out there that are worth checking out and we always enjoy finding new ones.
Here are a few recommended content management systems for blogging that we've tried and enjoy.
*Note: The systems below are not just for blogging, they are also very powerful CMS platforms. We simply classified them this way because they perform very well as blog platforms too!
Serendipity (also known as s9y)
Serendipity is an excellent blogging platform and when it comes to functionality, available plugins and stability, is quite a powerful system.  It doesn't stop at blogging, however. Serendipity is a very powerful CMS as well and can (and should) be used for other projects ranging from publishing to serving up your business' website.
Support is excellent and the developers are quick to (safely) adapt your requests which is a rarity in this type of market.
Some of it's features:
<ul>
<li>WYSIWYG and HTML editing</li>
<li>Built-in, powerful media database</li>
<li>Multiple authors, configurable permission/usergroup system</li>
<li>Threaded comments, nested categories, post to multiple categories</li>
<li>Multiple languages (internationalization)</li>
<li>Online plugin and template repository for easy plug-and-play installation</li>
<li>Cool plugins: category-based sub-blogs, podcasting, RSS planet/aggregator, static pages</li>

The bsd-licensed HWIOS (<a href="http://hwios.org">http://hwios.org</a>) project was started rougly a year ago to provide an easy-to-use web-UI to the Opensimulator virtual world platform, which is quite hard to control for non-technical users. It was built from ideas and flaws that were gathered and discovered from it's php predecessor WiXTD. HWIOS is a python CMS that's built on top of frameworks like Twisted, Django, JQuery and friends. It's a rather unconventional CMS because it relies solely on XHR and websockets for data(JSON) transport; hence it doesn't use page refreshing.
The CMS offers distributed service management with javascript websocket consoles, an integrated webdav server for sharing Opensim archive files from several servers, a simple JSON chat-app, Opensim region management through a TMS mapping service with Openlayers map controls, and customized simulator configurations. The goal of the project is not exclusively to deliver only a web-ui for Opensim, but for HWIOS to become a general-use collaborative package for both e-learning and e-work purposes.
It's architecture is well suitable to provide realtime collaborative text-features and notification systems in today's applications like a wiki, the forum or news apps. It uses a two-way JSON-RPC router for easy delivering of data from client-server and vice-versa.
Another thing that's interesting to implement is the html5 canvas tag, that can be used for shared whiteboards, visualisation of data structures, and more. The amount of features in HWIOS is still limited because of a lack of developers. The current focus is to finish the wiki system, refactor and comment the code and add internationalisation. Developers who are interested can check out the code from the git repository.

Enterprising Content Management for Enterprise Ireland

Open Text Corporation (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC), the preeminent provider of enterprise content management (ECM) software, today announced it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the “Leaders” quadrant of the “Magic Quadrant for Web Content Management,”* based on an evaluation of the company's ability to execute and its completeness of vision.
The Gartner report helps CIOs, business and IT leaders who are analyzing their Web strategies to consider whether they have the right WCM offering to support their business goals. View the full report <a href="http://www.opentext.com/2/global/gartner2010magicquadrant.html">here</a>.
The report paints a picture of a fast-growing, dynamic market, stating: “The WCM software market achieved total revenue of $890 million in 2009, despite recessions in many major economies, and will likely exceed $1 billion in 2010.” Gartner also projects that “the market will see a compound annual growth rate of 14 percent from 2009 to 2014. These numbers reflect enterprises' increasing emphasis on the online channel and improving visitors' experience. This level of growth has also led WCM to comprise a greater proportion of the overall enterprise content management (ECM) market than ever. In 2010, WCM will account for over 26% of this market,” the report notes.”
“We believe our presence as a “Leader” in the Web Content Management quadrant by Gartner affirms our strategy and continued investment in this space. The success we are having in helping some of the world's top brands improve their customers' Web experience is evident in our placement in this report,” said Lubor Ptacek, Vice President of Product Marketing at Open Text. “We continue to innovate and execute on our WCM roadmap as illustrated by the recent release of Web Site Management 10.1 and continued rollout of new capabilities and streamline integrations of Web Experience Management into the ECM Suite.”
The world's largest provider of WCM solutions, Open Text meets the full range of customers' WCM needs – from easy-to-deploy, departmental applications to more complex dynamic highly scalable Web deployments – with Open Text Web Site Management and Open Text Web Experience Management (Vignette). Open Text will continue to add incremental features, integrations and innovative capabilities to both products to further strengthen Open Text's leadership position in the fast-growing WCM market.

Reading, UK – Atex announces that Verlag Nürnberger Presse, the Nuremberg, Germany, media company, is live on the Atex Polopoly Web Content Management system. The go-live was part of the relaunch of nordbayern.de, the online presence of “Nürnberger Nachrichten” and the “Nürnberger Zeitung”.
Verlag Nürnberger Presse chose the Atex Polopoly system because of its robustness, flexibility and scalability. The implementation includes a close integration between Polopoly and the Atex editorial system allowing for seamless exchange of content between print and online editorial teams.
“One of our goals was the close cooperation of print and online,” said Werner Wittmann, Project Coordinator of the nordbayern.de relaunch. “The integration with the Atex editorial system we already use for the print production allows the print editors to put their content directly online and thus permits us to introduce modern convergent ways of working.”
The media company also enjoys that Polopoly can efficiently serve all digital publication channels with available applications for community services and personalization.
“The system is designed to cover all our current and future demands in the digital world,” says Alexander Maintok, technical project manager for the system implementation. Under the motto “Regional Competence in the Global Network”, nordbayern.de focuses on local and regional news coverage. Using the Atex Web CMS, the website gives readers the ability to search pages and articles using geo-codes presented on maps.
The Atex Polopoly system has helped Verlag Nürnberger Presse add other services that are accessible through the newly designed uniform navigation. These include an event database with information about all the major events of the region; an area for regional restaurants that integrates the largest Gastro database of northern Bavaria; and an expanded sports section with results of leagues in Northern Bavaria, game reports and Bundesliga betting games.

Leading digital asset management vendor, Daydream, have announced a public beta release of their .NET open source digital asset management system, FocusOPEN under an Affero General Public (AGPL) open source licence. Offering a public release marks a strategic change for Daydream, who have been providing high-end enterprise digital asset management software to corporations worldwide since 1995.
“Although traditionally we have concentrated solely on the enterprise tier of the DAM market, we found increasing demand for our software and services from smaller businesses and creative agencies. We always offered our software with an open source licence, but until now we avoided a public distribution because our service delivery operations were oriented towards the needs of our enterprise clients. Therefore, prior to a full public release, we made significant investments into our support infrastructure to ensure that the user experience is a positive one.” said Ralph Windsor, Managing Director of Daydream.
“The Open Source (AGPL) Edition of FocusOPEN provides a ‘tried-and-tested’ fully featured DAM system derived from our existing enterprise product that users can download from our website without charge. It has many of the features of its enterprise counterpart such as a dedicated asset transcoding server, embedded metadata support, multi-branding, full text search, faceted search, taxonomies, asset permissions and workflow for usage management as well as ingestion.” Windsor continues.
FocusOPEN is the only fully supported .NET open source DAM system available and promises to radically shake up this segment of the digital asset management market, which has hitherto been characterised by a limited selection of expensive and proprietary solutions. Daydream have set up a dedicated product website with a range of community support facilities. All registered users are provided with their own account where they can also manage additional service subscriptions.
“We have a package of associated services like hosting, SaaS, priority support and consulting. Users can also take advantage of some fantastic early bird offers, including sizeable discounts on any paid for services they might need to help them implement FocusOPEN in their organisation.”
Daydream also plan to reach out to the developer community and channel partners with the FocusOPEN Developer Network and a reseller programme. A public Commercial Edition is also planned for release shortly after the Open Source edition leaves the beta phase at the end of September 2010.
For further information, to trial or to download FocusOPEN Open Source (AGPL) Edition, visit the product website at <a href="http://www.digitalassetmanager.com">http://www.digitalassetmanager.com</a>
