The Top 10 AI Tools for Small Business: From Automation to a Coordinated Team of AI Agents

Over the last few years, content management systems have begun to evolve drastically. Initially, these products were perceived as being a simple means to putting a presence on the web, perhaps for the purpose of selling a product or service. Now, however, the requirements of what I would define as a true content management system have changed rather drastically.
Take a look at the recent release of <a href="http://www.liferay.com">Liferay</a> 6EE for instance.. in my mind, it somewhat speaks to what true content management is, which is why I've been so pleased with its release and the advancements that it brings.
In my opinion, the ideal CMS now blends a mixture of social aspects, workflow, and document management with a sleek presentation layer. No longer are they just systems that exist to stick a page up on the web… they are now platforms that are designed to provide a complete online presence. True, you may not use all of the features that these systems provide, but being given the opportunity to use them if you choose is what matters.
Often, when doing interviews, I ask the question “How do you define a CMS?” and there almost always seems to be a large number of differing opinions (<a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/what-is-a-cms">see some of them here</a>). This, I think, is due to confusion amongst both vendors and users as to how each side uses these products. Only recently have both sides begun to realize the need to engage one another using social media in order for both sides to benefit.
What is a CMS really? Is it a portal? Is it a presentation layer? No. It's all of this and more.
We can only hope that as vendors like Liferay and others start to redefine their products, so to do can we redefine the term and come to a mutual agreement as to what it really means.
Terminology aside, the CMS market is growing and expanding at a rate that promotes stronger competition, higher expectations and (hopefully) lowering costs for the end user.  With the culmination of portals, wikis, blogs, forums and social aspects being combined into these products, we can soon expect a shift in the way websites are used and navigated. More and more companies and organizations are moving away from the “sales type” website and into the “engage the customer” type whereby the site is defined by the users requirements and interactions as opposed to the companies need to sell products or services.
So what does a visitor to your website really want? According to what we are seeing of late, they want easy access to information about your product or service, a fast and effective means of communicating with other users of your products and a way to reach out to you as well if they so desire. They want to be able to spread the word if they are happy or let you know if they are not and they want to do this quickly and efficiently without whittling away their time trying to find out how to do so.
With the advancement in social media and the way we interact with the web, we can most certainly expect more unique and interesting approaches from those companies that are fit to react in a timely manner to these changing needs.
What do you see as the next evolution?

Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware is now included in the Windows Web App Gallery and can be installed with the Microsoft Web Platform Installer. Inclusion in the gallery means that millions of Windows users now have easier access to Tiki. Tiki was downloaded over 300 times from the gallery in the first 2 days.
This achievement is the result of work by several Tiki Community members including Philippe Cloutier, Marc Laporte, and Pascal St-Jean, as well as assistance from Microsoft. Work initially began on this project during TikiFest Confoo2010 with Wade Hilmo from Microsoft.

“Choosing qualified Partners to deploy effective web strategies that ensure our customers’ brands are promoted in a protected, positive and integrated way is a core Ektron value.  The new portal gives our Partners direct access to the information, tools, methodologies and technologies to help customers achieve business-critical success with Ektron,” said Bill Rogers, founder and CEO of Ektron.  “We are dedicated to our Partners and have built an infrastructure to ensure that every deployment is a success.  We aim to increase our global account references a minimum of 20 percent by the end of 2010.”
With solutions for a wide range of industries including healthcare, media and entertainment, financial services, manufacturing and non-profits, the portal will:
<ul>
<li>Leverage the Ektron Marketing Optimization and Social Software suites to facilitate Partner Forums and analyze Partner priorities for continued program improvement.</li>

</ul>
“Partner feedback has played a significant role in the revamp of the Ektron Partner portal,” said Savas Gunduz, Managing Partner, Solsbury Partner Group.  “Ektron is listening and re-aligning with Partners to create an infrastructure that makes it easier to team with Ektron on customer engagements.  The redesign of the site itself is based on continual Partner feedback that Ektron has acquired via the use of its own social technology to create bi-directional communication streams.  Making it easier for Partners to work with Ektron ultimately will lead to tighter communication and collaboration in front of our mutual customers — a better experience  for and ultimately higher referenceability from the customer.”

In one of the big announcements at this year's eZ conference, eZ Systems revealed some important changes to the way they encourage and integrate innovative contributions to eZ Publish, their open source platform. The eZ Publish core is currently developed solely by eZ Systems engineers.

Now, eZ Systems will offer the eZ Publish Community Project, a version of their open source platform which will open the development process up to long-term, trusted community members. Concurrently, eZ Systems will release eZ Publish Enterprise, a version of its platform which benefits from the accelerated innovation of the community edition, but which will be managed from a dedicated code base and subject to stronger, more rigorous testing. As a supported version of the platform, eZ Publish Enterprise will offer additional value to customers using eZ Publish in a mission critical environment. These changes are set to take effect with the up-coming release scheduled for September 28th, 2010.
By splitting the Community Project and Enterprise versions, eZ Systems aims to increase the value of their offering across the board, from the eZ community to customers and business partners.
eZ Publish Community Project is a great opportunity for long-term partners and community members who have demonstrated their skills and knowledge to have even more influence on the eZ Publish roadmap. The more than 37,000 members of the eZ community will now have the opportunity to directly commit to the eZ Publish Community Project code repository. The Community Project amounts to a new way of contributing to eZ Publish's core in a simple, more efficient manner, and not just by way of Community add-ons. Now more than ever, governance of the eZ community is in the hands of its members.
eZ Publish has traditionally been known for high quality standards. With the strong subscription product support and maintenance available through eZ Systems, and stringent quality assurance standards, eZ Publish has been an enterprise-ready product from the beginning. Now, in order to benefit from the accelerated innovation in the eZ Publish Community Project, without compromising the high quality standards for professional use, eZ is introducing a new edition of its software. eZ Publish Enterprise will be managed in a dedicated code base–a code repository with stronger testing and packaging, featuring integrated Enterprise add-ons available only for eZ Publish Enterprise subscribers.
The new development and product distribution model will be rolled out with the next version of eZ Publish on September 28th 2010:
<ul>
<li>the core eZ Publish Community Project based on SCRUM (3 week sprints) for developers, researchers, or any of those interested in the bleeding edge development of eZ Publish. This will be downloadable from the Community Portal at http://share.ez.no</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>eZ Publish Enterprise, the version designed for professional use of eZ Publish either under the traditional GPL license or the Professional User Licence (PUL). This version will be available on a bi-annual basis (March and September), and available only through eZ Publish Enterprise Subscription.</li>

eZ Systems set to boost innovation while enhancing business value to professional users

Webnodes AS, a company developing an ASP.NET based semantic content management system, today announced the release of version 3.5 of their CMS. The new release improves the system in a number of key areas.
Improvements in the semantic definitions module The semantic definitions module enable a user to define a semantic ontology. When the ontology has been created, the system creates an object model that reflects the ontology defined. The semantic content is then accessed using the built-in ORM. In this new version of the CMS, the module has been thoroughly updated making it much easier to use, while adding a number of powerful features.
E-commerce module This is the first version of Webnodes CMS that includes the long-awaited e-commerce module. You will now be able to benefit from the semantic content technology in the core framework when creating your e-commerce sites. One of the core design goals behind the e-commerce module (and Webnodes CMS in general) is scalability. The module is designed to work for both small web shops and large e-commerce sites, meaning that it must be quick and easy to use for small projects, but also flexible and extensible enough to work well for more complex needs.
Content links mini viewer. When building websites with semantic content, the structure of a site is not only hierarchical, as in most traditional websites, but the content forms a semantic network, with many different relations between the different content elements. In this new version, a small content links viewer is displayed in the main content module to give editors a better overview of what the current content node is related to, without opening the full content links browser.
Rounded corners and borders on images Webnodes CMS already has an industry leading image handling technology built into the system, but this release includes a number of useful additions and improvements. Rounded corners can now be applied to images for a fraction of the effort normally required. The image handling engine can now also add borders to images.
“This release contains a number of improvements that both end-users and our implementation partners will benefit from”, said Ole Gulbrandsen, CTO of Webnodes. “We’re experiencing a lot of interest in our semantic content technology at the moment. I believe this release will only increase the interest in our products.”
About Webnodes CMS <a href="http://www.webnodes.com">Webnodes CMS</a> is a unique ASP.NET based web content management system that supports semantic content. The CMS is based on Webnodes’ 10 years of experience developing advanced web content management systems.

Georg-Christian Pranschke from http://www.sensepost.com/ discovered a vulnerability in Elgg that could potentially allow SQL injection attacks using crafted URLs or POSTs. Versions 1.7.3 and 1.6.3 correct this and are highly recommended for all Elgg users.
1.7.3 also includes additional bugfixes for problems found in 1.7.2:
<ul>
<li>Entering an invalid captcha now forwards to the referring page instead of the front page.</li>
<li>“Edit details” and “Edit profile icon” only show up on user's own profile.</li>
<li>get_objects_in_group() works correctly.</li>
<li>Legacy wrapper functions correctly support multiple owner guids.</li>
</ul>
To maintain the security of your network and its users, all Elgg installations should be upgraded immediately.

The Plone community has raised the bar in the Content Management System market with today's release of Plone 4, a faster, more user-friendly and more refined version of a product which has set the pace for CMS innovation for nearly a decade.  Plone 4 delivers big improvements in raw speed, scalability and ease of use, and continues to advance its hallmark strengths of unmatched security, superior user interface, ease of installation and a beautiful out-of-the-box experience.
“Plone 4 is based on the most-frequently requested features and improvements from Plone's worldwide user and developer community,” says Plone co-founder and Firefox User Experience Lead Alexander Limi. “Our developers and users asked for better performance — Plone 4 is much faster, requires less memory, and performs well even when serving up massive files. They also didn't want us to sacrifice what we do well to get there — and we haven't. Plone 4 is not just more powerful — it continues to improve in areas Plone has always been known for: usability, security, and a CMS that is easy to install, upgrade, and looks great right out of the box.”
Looking back on the nine year evolution of Plone and the community that supports it, Limi is more than pleased. “It's gotten to be a lot bigger than I thought it could be. Sometimes we forget how many people are involved with Plone, and how many people have left behind PHP and Java to create successful businesses based around Plone.”
Geir Bækholt, President of the Plone Foundation, has a similar reaction. “I'm impressed with how professional, mature and focused the Plone community is. It's rare in open source to see so many companies operating to such high standards, treating their customers and employees well and running their businesses in a sustainable manner.  The best thing about Plone is that we have so many mature, stable companies using it who are consummate professionals at what they do.”
For all its technical and visual improvements, one of Plone 4's most important roles is to build the under-the-hood foundation even more exciting improvements in Plone 5.  It gives developers and users innovations they can use today, while allowing them to develop products and websites that will be ready to take full advantage of future Plone releases.
The list of notable changes in Plone 4 includes:
<ul>
<li>Significant performance improvements</li>
<li>New theme</li>
<li>Search and indexing improvements</li>
<li>Group Dashboards for a Customized User Experience</li>
<li>Massively improved handling of large files &amp; media</li>
<li>New, faster folder implementation</li>
<li>More powerful management of users and groups</li>
<li>Dynamic forms framework based on jQuery Tools</li>
<li>Improved first-run experience</li>
<li>Smooth upgrade experience</li>
<li>Reduced memory footprint</li>
<li>Upgraded infrastructure</li>
</ul>
You can find out more about these new features than you would ever want to by visiting <a href="http://plone.org/4">http://plone.org/4</a>.

Tikifest New York: Countdown to Tiki 6

The SilverStripe team have launched a free extension to SilverStripe CMS that makes it easier to build websites for mobile devices. This is a great trend we've been seeing lately and we're keeping a close eye as more and more CMS vendors move to adapt to the new mobile web.
<blockquote>Most websites now have a noticeable amount of visitors using mobile devices. We've been looking at how to make it easier to build websites that can be accessed through popular mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Google Android phones.
The result is the SilverStripe Mobile Module. Once installed, it provides out of the box functionality to render an SilverStripe CMS website using a mobile-optimised theme, with the page width, font size, and menu layout designed for a small screen.
While you can certainly use this out of the box theme, it's mainly supplied so that someone familiar with HTML and CSS can customise the theme to suit your intended look and feel.
The module also provides:
<ul>
<li>Automatic detection of mobile devices so that you can automatically redirect people to a mobile-optimised website.</li>
<li>A simple GUI for configuring the module</li>
</ul>
You can test-drive the module by visiting <a href="https://m.demo.silverstripe.com/">https://m.demo.silverstripe.com</a> in your mobile phone.
SilverStripe's templating language has meant developing mobile templates has always been possible. However, there is considerable effort in achieving cross-browser compatibility across mobile devices. The goal for this module is to reduce the time it takes people to build websites optimised for browsing by mobile devices. It's not intended to grow into a module that allows people on mobile phones to perform content authoring (although we do see that this could be useful for certain CMS tasks, like approving a request from a colleague to publish website content.)</blockquote>
At this stage, the mobile module is in beta. This means they are inviting people to download, test, and offer feedback on the module. Once they've incorporated your feedback, they hope to release the module confidently knowing that it provides website developers with a stable and useful tool for quickly creating mobile-optimised websites.
