Bitrix, Inc. (www.bitrixsoft.com), a technology trendsetter in business communications solutions, announces the availability of Bitrix® Intranet Portal 9.0, the most ambitious release of the company’s Enterprise 2.0 solution for effective collaboration, communication, social networking, workflow and knowledge management for small and medium-sized businesses. The avalanche of new features reflects the increasing demand for the Enterprise 2.0 environment to reach a new level of sustainable business operations and bridge organizations with their customers, partners and employees.
SMBs sorely need cost-effective solutions to create productive internal workspaces and solid communications with external parties. Unfortunately, the market offers either over-priced, over-featured enterprise-level suites or lightweight or single-purpose products covering a limited number of tasks. “Our latest release carries a number of top-notch innovations and a perfectly balanced mix of features that offer customers a Swiss-army-knife solution with the industry leading “value-for-money” rate,” said Dmitry Valyanov, President of Bitrix, Inc.
Write, speak, watch
Bitrix Intranet Portal 9.0 now provides a full range of business-oriented communication opportunities. In the new version, the blogs &amp; forums and instant messaging (http://www.bitrixsoft.com/products/intranet/features/xmpp.php) features are reinforced with video conferencing and e-mail processing.
Customers can create a number of virtual video meeting rooms according to their license terms, make online room reservations with real-time status display in the public calendar and initiate either an instant peer-to-peer video call or a click-away video conference for up to six participants. This feature is available both for internal and external communications and requires a simple browser plug-in.
Thanks to the integrated Send&amp;Save™ technology, organizations can solve a major headache associated with the fact that email remains the main business communication tool. Correspondence is usually dispersed among user mailboxes without proper archiving and sharing, thus leaving no significant footprint after employee dismissal. The new feature duplicates email in the intranet, stores messages in dedicated discussions with shared user access rights and indexes it for the D.I.G. (http://www.bitrixsoft.com/products/in…earch.php) enterprise search engine.
The integrated SMTP server sorts incoming email to dedicated discussions in Bitrix Intranet Portal and delivers notifications about group announcements, replies and new topics back to user inboxes. This way, employees can leverage the workgroup collaboration even without logging into the intranet portal.
Security above all
Bitrix Intranet Portal 9.0 makes a huge step forward in security with the improvement of the integrated PRO+PRO™ security framework (http://www.bitrixsoft.com/products/intranet/security.php), which goes far beyond traditional intranet protection. Thanks to the new anti-virus module, the product prevents malicious code distribution to end users and provides both detection and disinfection capabilities for automatic purging of infected code. In combination with embedded backup and integrity control, the web anti-virus dramatically amplifies the overall product security, minimizes downtime, and ensures industry-leading business continuity and reputation protection.
The module performs real-time HTML code scanning, identifies and cuts suspicious iframe and javascript blocks, and informs the website administrator about the detected threat. It combines rule-based behavior blocking and signature-based anti-virus technologies to combat, with 90% efficiency, both known and unknown malware which other systems would simply pass along to site users.
Business process management
Confirming its status as a technological pioneer in Enterprise 2.0 business process management, Bitrix has added a number of important enhancements to this module (http://www.bitrixsoft.com/products/intranet/features/business_processes.php). Bitrix Intranet Portal 9.0 allows for more effective business process design and monitoring by leveraging new collaborative and fundamental features.
Now, a process can be initiated with regards to a document or a routine activity, owners can modify the process at any stage of its implementation, users can receive assignments directly to their calendars and tasks as well as receive notifications via instant messenger or e-mail. The business processes visual constructor received new functions like issue escalation and decision-making timeout, while the product is now equipped with additional templates for typical activity like business trips and vacation request handling.
Equipped with an intuitive drag-and-drop interface and extreme ease of use, the module provides businesses an opportunity for significant improvement of intranet ROI by boosting employee productivity, internal interoperability, and user satisfaction.
Last but not least
Bitrix Intranet Portal 9.0 experienced several other enhancements which are spearheading the evolving Enterprise 2.0 market and driven by user demand. The product enables automatic visual representation of organization’s structure with details received directly from Active Directory or entered manually. The user interface was endowed with extended tooltips when browsing employee profiles. The workgroups appearance has changed, offering more comprehensive control, monitoring, intuitive navigation and customization with full support of tags and tag-based search.
Bitrix Intranet Portal 9.0 supports the latest versions of the most popular browsers including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Opera for PC and Mac. The product contains the capability of smart connecting of huge data storages to make them available for intranet users in a matter of seconds. The photo gallery module underwent a major revamp, allowing better image uploading, adjusting and presentation.
Customers also receive extended customization options to craft their solution according to certain business needs. Organizations can create their own private and public grids to present a unified display of data scattered among multiple sources and reflecting heterogeneous information stores like partner lists, knowledge bases, etc.
“Wrapped in a highly-customizable mashup-style user interface, Bitrix Intranet Portal 9.0 offers a very attractive employee workspace which makes adoption of this intranet solution fast and painless, as described by users themselves. As a result, businesses can easily capitalize on the social dimension of work and leverage profound employee involvement,” said Dmitry Valyanov, President of Bitrix, Inc.
Pricing
Customers can purchase a 25-User Base Pack (starting from US$1799) and the necessary number of user licenses exceeding 25 (US$40 per user). Options for unlimited users and a special offer for Hosting Providers are also available.

Bitrix Enriches Enterprise 2.0 with Cutting-Edge Communication and Collaboration Features

The Joomla Project, a free, award-winning PHP-based content management system that enables users to build websites and powerful online applications, today announced the beta release of Joomla 1.6. Designed to offer enhanced site control and a more polished user experience, Joomla 1.6 will deliver a variety of new tools to improve website management and access, a more robust organizational structure for content control, and various other user-experience improvements throughout the software.
“The release of Joomla 1.6 will raise the bar of success for our community’s users, and enable our developer community to build even more exciting and compelling solutions,” said Ryan Ozimek, President of Open Source Matters, the not-for-profit organization that supports The Joomla Project. “New features and capabilities – such as the hierarchical design of the access control system, semantic XHTML layouts and one-click extension updates – usher in a new set of tools that open doors for more effective online engagements. Whether building a personal website or a next-generation Web application for an enterprise environment, Joomla 1.6 offers the most compelling solution for easily building and managing powerful online solutions.”
Joomla’s ease-of-use and extensibility has made it the most popular and downloaded open source website software in the industry today (it has been downloaded more than 16 million times). It is used for everything from small personal websites to the backend management for some of the largest enterprises and highest traffic sites on the Web, including sites operated by Citibank, IHOP, Harvard University, the Baltimore Police Department, Linux.com, Smart Car of America, The Guggenheim Museum, and <a href="http://community.joomla.org/showcase">many more</a>.
Key Features in Joomla 1.6: New Access Control System – Allows site administrators control over who can view and manage content. Unlimited Depth Organizational Model – Gives site administrators and content creators user-defined category levels that allow for the creation of a category tree with as many or as few levels for organizing articles and other content as needed. One-Click Extension Updates – Allows users to keep sites secure and controlled by simplifying the process of updating extensions. Semantic XHTML Layouts – Provides a better baseline for content presentation.
In addition, developers and implementers will enjoy the new ability Joomla 1.6 provides in allowing extensions to be built with granular control and permissions. This will make it easier to create more advanced, enterprise-focused applications and extensions for Joomla. Furthermore, there are numerous improvements in areas like code reuse, and considerable success in ensuring the stability of application programming interfaces via unit testing.
“With the release of 1.6, The Joomla Project is transitioning the development process to a more iterative, time-based release cycle,” said Louis Landry, a lead developer and community member of The Joomla Project. “This new approach will help streamline the production of new code and better ensure timely releases around product updates. I’m very excited about the beta release and look forward to working with the entire community as we continue to refine the system.”

SilverStripe 2.4 has been released and this release comes with a ton of new changes, highlighted below.
<h3>Hierarchical URLs</h3>
If your website contains a large number of pages, you may find SilverStripe's default way of handling URLs a little limiting. Until now, URLs could only be one level deep, for example:
<pre>http://website.com/new-york-staff-john-smith</pre>
With hierarchical URLs, the address for such a page might be:
<pre>http://website.com/offices/new-york/staff/john-smith</pre>
One of the principles of this feature is that it provides a logical “bread crumb” for a page. Each URL segment (as separated by a slash) is a page in itself that can be visited. Hierarchical URLs also reduce the problem of “running out” of URLs, where you might be forced to have URLs like http://website.com/staff-2.
SilverStripe 2.4 allows you to run the website in either simple or hierarchical URL mode.
Huge thanks go to Andrew Short, a member of our developer community based in Australia, who is responsible for writing most of this feature.
<h3>Microsoft SQL Server database support</h3>
We have seen strong demand for SilverStripe to run on the Microsoft platform—in recent months there have been tens of thousands of downloads via the Microsoft.com web application gallery alone. We have therefore worked hard to allow SilverStripe to natively run on a SQL Server 2008 database, eliminating the requirement to run SilverStripe on MySQL (though, of course, it still runs great on MySQL). We're really happy with the results, and we have government websites like www.gw.govt.nz already running on this platform.
Running SilverStripe on SQL Server requires the installation of the SilverStripe SQL Server module.
<h3>PostgreSQL database support</h3>
SilverStripe 2.4 can also run on a PostgreSQL 8.3 or later database. We are continuosly testing this feature; however, our testing has not been as extensive as it has been for Microsoft SQL Server. We'd love for you to install SilverStripe 2.4 with the PostgreSQL Database Support module and let us know how it goes.
<h3>Performance and memory use optimisations</h3>
Memory use optimisations mean that the CMS backend interface for the “Site Content” section easily scales to well over 10,000 pages. Changes include:
<ul>
<li>Performance improvements around Object and ViewableData property access.</li>
<li>Improved unit test execution speed.</li>
<li>Decreased memory usage in “Files &amp; Images” section.</li>
<li>Ability to cache parts of templates, providing a middle ground between the speed of fully cached pages and the richness of fully dynamic database-driven pages.</li>
<li>Batch action handling handles larger tree structures, provides better visual feedback, and respects permissions on individual pages.</li>
<li>Tests that SilverStripe is compatible with Microsoft's new WinCache PHP bytecode cache. Anecdotal tests show that WinCache provides a 50% speed improvement in generating SilverStripe webpages.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Introducing roles</h3>
SilverStripe has long had support for setting granular security permissions on pages. Users can be a member of one or more groups, and groups can be configured to have various system rights. We also allow various view and edit permissions on a page-by-page basis. This provides a great deal of flexibility, but in complex organisations the task of setting up the permission structures can mean spending a lot of time creating security groups.
With SilverStripe 2.4 we've made it easier to manage more complex security configurations with the introduction of roles. Roles allows you to create groupings of people who
<ul>
<li>Have the same system rights (e.g., access to create pages but not create users.)</li>
<li>Have those rights for different sections of a website (e.g., news section, product catalogue, corporate profile, etc.)</li>
</ul>
Roles are optional.
<h3>Other security features</h3>
<ul>
<li>A group can be limited to only edit a certain language in the CMS.</li>
<li>Team members can get permissions to see the draft version of a page in preview mode without requiring CMS access.</li>
<li>Pages of type “Virtual Page” have improved stability in regards to their permission control, translation, and publication.</li>
<li>More fine-grained permission control for translators.</li>
<li>Better XSS security of the autologin token by using HTTPOnly cookies.</li>
<li>More secure against brute force login attempts.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Other key improvements</h3>
<ul>
<li>Our new SiteConfig feature allows you to store site-wide settings including permissions and languages used on your site.</li>
<li>The CMS now searches for broken internal links to other pages and broken file references, and highlights them in the WYSIWYG editor. A report can be used to show broken links across the website.</li>
<li>Improved API to allow custom tags to be parsed within CMS content before being presented on webpages.</li>
<li>Improved reporting API to unify the CMS sidebar reports and full-page reports on their own section. It's easier to add custom filters to reports.</li>
<li>Added dropdown to choose from existing anchor links when inserting a link from the CMS sidebar.</li>
<li>Improved broken link detection.</li>
<li>Removed the jsparty/ toplevel folder, and moved all its dependencies into sapphire/thirdparty and cms/thirdparty.</li>
<li>More than 350 bugfix and enhancement commits, plus over 200 minor changes.</li>
</ul>

We have some exciting news to announce. Osmek is finally official, and now it's open to anyone. You can sign up instantly at <a href="http://osmek.com">osmek.com</a>.
What is Osmek &amp; What's so great about it?
When Kemso began building &amp; designing sites for people we realized that one of the biggest needs for our clients was content management. We wanted to provide this so we began building our own CMS. After a year or so we realized that drastic improvements to the CMS were happening drastically fast. The problem was that there was no good way to upgrade all the CMS's we had already installed without significant time and effort. Enter Osmek. Osmek is a cloud CMS. It exists independently of the sites it manages, allowing every customer to receive the benefits of upgrades and new features.
The best part about a cloud CMS is that you can access it from anywhere. Osmek can run 1 site or 100 sites, at 100 different urls on 100 different servers. That means that if you use Osmek to manage your site, you can also use it to manage content on another site, or server at the same time. 1 single update can push out to all your locations.
It's all in the API
Osmek's API is what makes it all happen. Most services release an API to give power users access to certain parts of their offering. With Osmek, the API is the core of the service. It's how your site interacts with Osmek. The coolest part about the API is that it's uber flexible. It will give you access to just about any piece of data in your account, in just about any format you could want. JSON, XML, HTML, Serialized PHP, it's all there.
But we think the most powerful part of the API is it's template processing ability. You post a template to Osmek, and it will return it filled with the content from your account. This makes integration and site development easier and faster than ever. Learn more about template parsing at the <a href="http://osmek.com/user_guide">user guide</a>.
Get started
We'll be posting more about Osmek's features and functionality over the next several months, but the best thing you can do if you're insterested is head over to <a href="http://osmek.com">osmek.com</a> and sign up for a free account. Give it a try! If you run into trouble, open a new discussion on our <a href="http://support.osmek.com">support</a> site and we'll help you out.

Alfresco Software, the leader in open source enterprise content management (ECM), today announced the immediate availability of Alfresco Community Edition 3.3 for download. This release includes a range of content services for developers, including integrations with IBM Lotus Social software and a preview of an upcoming Google Docs(TM) integration. With LGPL licensing and enhancements to document and web content management (WCM) functionality, Community 3.3 is also the first ECM tool to enable developers to deliver content-rich business applications leveraging CMIS 1.0 open source standards.
“From CMIS 1.0-compliance that will ‘future proof’ content application development, to LGPL licensing, Community 3.3 offers a range of new features and functionality that will continue to extend the free distribution and presence of Alfresco open source ECM,” said John Newton, CTO, Alfresco Software. “The enhanced content services in Alfresco Community 3.3 are designed to help organizations better manage web presence with tools designed to simplify the process of building content-rich web applications using CMIS.”
Significant enhancements to Alfresco Community Edition 3.3 include:
Content Services – Providing core content management capabilities, in a free-to-distribute CMIS runtime, which allows developers to easily embed content services in their applications:
<ul>
<li>CMIS 1.0 Compliance – For several years, Alfresco has taken a leading role in the development of open source standards. With the imminent approval of CMIS as an industry standard, Alfresco is the first ECM vendor to launch a fully compliant implementation of CMIS 1.0.</li>
<li>Inline Content Editing Services – In-context editing allows non-technical content authors to edit content directly from the web page. Alfresco Community 3.3 also provides a Web Editor Framework (WEF) – a JavaScript client side framework rendering a toolbar and associated controls designed to allow developers to extend any in-context functionality that may be required. The WEF also enables developers to easily create and package plug-ins and extensions for simple management and interoperability.</li>
<li>Content Repurposing – Automated content formatting functionality allows developers to build solutions to easily repurpose content for the web. Developers can use automated rules and existing FreeMarker and XSLT templates to format content for multiple delivery channels.</li>
<li>Repository Replication &amp; Web Deployment – Alfresco 3.3 builds on current rich deployment facilities with the introduction of the Transfer Service. Developers can utilize the transfer service to build solutions that transfer content between Alfresco repositories, enabling them to maintain rich content structures and relationships between Alfresco environments. This is especially useful to WCM architectures where Alfresco provides both authoring and delivery tier components.</li>
</ul>
Integrations – Designed to meet the needs of developers looking for industry standard platforms that provide content services, Community 3.3 extends Alfresco support in the following key areas:
<ul>
<li>IBM Lotus – Building on the ‘technology preview’ of the integration between Alfresco and IBM Lotus software products (Lotus QuickrTM, Lotus ConnectionsTM and Lotus NotesTM), this integration provides a more open platform and full-featured solution than Microsoft SharePoint(TM).</li>
<li>Google Docs – Alfresco’ s integration with Google Docs provides users with full online editing capabilities, removing the need to use office applications, such as Microsoft Office(TM) to modify or update content.  The integration will be previewed at AIIM Expo and available for download in Alfresco Community in May.</li>
</ul>
Collaboration – New enhancements to Alfresco’s collaborative content management platform, Alfresco Share, include:
<ul>
<li>Repository-wide content access – Alfresco Share users can now browse the document management (DM) repository as well as project or collaboration sites. New features provide users with full permission control and DM capabilities.</li>
<li>Automated Content Rules – Alfresco Share now includes a new rules and actions interface, allowing administrators to automate actions on content such as transform, move, copy, notify and many more. In addition, Alfresco 3.3 enables users to define a library of rules and link these to any space for automatic execution.</li>
<li>Collaboration Lists – Provides users with a mechanism for tracking lists of items within the context of a project. Lists can be used for multiple purposes such as tasks, issues, to-dos, and contacts and can be easily extended.</li>
<li>Google Like Search – Offers users a familiar Google-like advanced search, which allows fields to be queried alongside text searches, such as finding documents by a given author created since a given date and containing a given text.</li>
</ul>
Business Friendly Open Source License – With Alfresco Community 3.3, the Alfresco repository has been moved to the LGPL license, allowing developers to embed Alfresco into their solutions without affecting their existing business model or license.
