[<a href="http://gutensite.com/">Gutensite</a> is a very cool online CMS that is free but can be extended for a small fee. What's unique in my mind about this product is the beauty of it's design and the wonderful choices you get with their design library. We recently took a look at the system and put together this Gutensite review.
Gutensite is extremely easy to use and very reminiscent of Squarespace (a similar product) but much quicker and more attractive in my opinion.
Here is an example of the type of design you can have with this product (this is only one of many design choices you get):

As I mentioned previously, the design and beauty of this system are second to none. It is very well laid out with a very attractive and intuitive interface as you can see from this next screenshot of the control panel interface:

In fact, I like it so much I would not hesitate to call it the best free online CMS that I have seen to date. It has some incredible extensability and has specialized modules for various unique functions.
It has a few addon features ($40 give or take, which is very, very cheap) such as the ones below:

Gutensite Review - An Introduction to the New Online CMS

The AxCMS.net team have provided us with a video showcasing their internal version 9 alpha release. For those unfamiliar with the product, AxCMS.net is known as a powerful enterprise web content management system.
With separated systems for managing content and a second (or more in load balanced scenarios) for the productive environment and with the possibility to extend the system and integrate other databases, products, business logic, and much more AxCMS.net is often recommended for midsize and big projects.

AxCMS.net 9 alpha video showcases new features expected in next release

Today we've brought you our Pegboard CMS Review. This system's primary claim to fame is that it's a “tag-based” architecture which makes it easy and efficient to design very dynamic sites. For more info on how the “tag-based” system works, check out the video on <a href="http://www.pegboard.com.au/producttour/buildingwithpegboard.aspx">this page</a>.
Let's take a look at what makes Pegboard tick and enter the administration interface to see what options we have.
Once logged in, we are greeted with an attractive admin interface that provides quick and easy access to Pegboards various settings.

Now that we have a bit of an idea as to what options we have to play with, let's take a look at the Default site we've been given and see what we can do with it.
Clicking on “DefaultSite” in the Site Map in the above screenshot gives us a number of options and settings we can tweak on the site. There are a lot of options here, so be prepared for a series of long screenshots so we can show you them all:

As you can see, there is a pretty amazing amount of flexibility as to what can be changed on the site. You will see these same options on each individual page which gives you a lot of control over the site. Being able to set hover images and offsets on a per page level is pretty solid flexibility, but it doesn't stop there. Right clicking on the individual pages gives you access to a whole new set of commands and actions that can be performed:

Editing the individual content itself is straight forward and involves accessing the content menu and selecting the applicable page. You will then be greeted with a standard Wysiwyg editor reminiscent of TinyMCE or FCK:

Let's take a look through some of the installed modules.
Pegboard has an integrated email marketing module that provides a fair amount of functionality:

From a security standpoint, Pegboard allows you to set per-module security which means you can provide fairly intricate levels of security for individual access groups or users.
The preferences menu allows for various settings such as the basic info on the site, corporate information, caching details and your database configuration.

Examining the front end, we are greeted with a pretty basic theme that provides a starting point with which the site can be built.

Summary
This review only shows the basic information and initial configuration of Pegboard. There are a large number of additional modules available such as ecommerce, seo, news, blogs and more which you can see a <a href="http://pegboardcms.com/Products1/PegboardCMSModules.aspx">list of here</a>.
From a usability standpoint, the Pegboard team has done a great job of making the backend easy to navigate, user friendly and quick. We found the options to be well laid out and easy to locate.
It's very nice to be able to access per page settings and configure them from a quick menu and we found that quite intuitive and easy to use. You can get more information on how the backend of the system works by watching some of the videos on their site. <a href="http://www.pegboard.com.au/producttour/managingtheconsole.aspx">This one in particular</a> gives a good explanation.
The folks at Pegboard have done a great job of putting together a quick and well thought out content management system with a nice amount of functionality. With the number of modules available (50 at last count) we can see this system being used for a large variety of projects.
Pegboard is indeed a system that makes content management feel less painful and more usable than previously perceived.

Pegboard CMS Review

The acquisition has now received approval by Vignette’s stockholders.

The combined product line will provide users with a full set of feature options, from an easy-to-use, fast-to-deploy web publishing application, to a fully integrated, enterprise-class e-business platform for large-scale deployments.
“The new demands of social and digital media, and fast-growing user expectations for more personalized Web interactions are placing enormous pressures on customers to keep up,” said John Shackleton, President and Chief Executive Officer of Open Text. “This is an important area of innovation for us going forward as we expand our ECM portfolio – Vignette will play a key role in this strategy.

According to Shackleton, Open Text also sees opportunities to leverage other key components of Vignette’s product portfolio within the Open Text ECM Suite. Merger Agreement Pursuant to the terms of the Merger Agreement, each outstanding share of Vignette common stock was converted into the right to receive $8.00 in cash, without interest and 0.1447 shares of Open Text common stock. Open Text will issue approximately 3.45 million shares of its common stock in connection with the Merger. Based on the closing price of $36.84 per share of Open Text common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market on July 20, 2009, the last trading day before the closing of the Merger, the aggregate value of the consideration paid in connection with the Merger was approximately $321 million.
Open Text expects to incur restructuring charges associated with this merger and will disclose, on Monday July 27, 2009,  estimates of the range of amounts expected to be incurred in connection with the restructuring initiative in a Form 8-K filing. Management will provide further information regarding the future plans and prospects of the combined company when it provides fiscal year-end results on August 20, 2009.

Open Text completes Vignette Acquisition

We're all well aware that micro blogging has taken the ‘net by storm lately with the introduction of Twitter and similar services.
There are also now appliances (<a href="http://www.socialtext.com/blog/2009/07/microblogging-intranet.html">Microblogging Appliance Delivers a Twitter for your Intranet)</a> that have been created in order to help expand micro-blogging into the corporate environment.  It's also well known that people already use acronyms, mis-spellings, word replacements and other means to communicate without using the actual correct language itself.
This has led us to wonder if perhaps micro blogging and other similar tools such as instant messaging have begun to lead to an even further degradation of the human language.  Is this the case or are we simple evolving speech wise?
Slang seems to be becoming more prevalent today then it once was. So much so, in fact, that we sometimes notice slang terms being used in business meetings as if they were actual dictionary words.

Is Micro-blogging degrading the English language?

eZPublish has long been known as a major player in the open source market, especially when it comes to the publishing world. In order to both improve their products' ease of use and to provide an all encompassing solution, they have created an all in one eZ Publish installer.
This installer packages a Mysql database, an Apache web server instance with PHP and of course <a href="http://ez.no/download">eZ Publish</a>.
Walkthrough
You can download the installer from the <a href="http://ez.no/company/news/new_installer_released_ez_publish_is_only_a_few_clicks_away">eZ Publish website</a>, it is available for Windows and Mac systems. Once downloaded, simply double click on the executable and you'll be presented with the following screen (we have only tested the windows version so screens may vary slightly on the Mac).

Simply clicking next will take you to the component selection screen. This screen should really just be a confirmation screen as there really is no option to select anything being that it's all greyed out.. but it's a new installer so we'll go easy on them ?

Once you've chosen what options you can, proceeding you will be greeted with the screen below which identifies the versions to be installed and the necessary ports that will be used:

You are then provided with the opportunity to create your administrator account:

And now the installation process begins:

Once the install is complete, your default browser will automatically launch the page below which provides some additional information. It is important to keep in mind that this installer does not fully install eZPublish for you but rather installs and prepares the included applications and the ezPublish installer. What this means is that clicking finish will then take you through the ezPublish installation that we're used to without prompting for database details, etc.

Once you've clicked on Finish installation, you will then be taken through a few ezPublish install screens:

Normally, the installer will download a remote site package list and present you with options, but since our test machine is behind a secured network, firewall and proxy, it was not permitted to do so. What we do at this point is open the remote repository URL provided, download the necessary packages and then upload them via this page below.

You then have the option of submitting site details to eZ Systems which they will use to track the type of installs and other basic information.

Now the installation is complete and you can proceed to your administrator panel or the default website.

We won't be covering the administrative interface in this article as it is quite involved but this gives you a good idea as to how the system and the installer works. It's obvious they've done a lot of work on improving the comfort zones of their customers and they have indeed come a long way in recent years. We can only hope for more improvements and enhancements down the road.

Our Top Six Favourite Joomla Template Providers

For those of you who may be looking for something that's simple and easy to use and an effective alternative to traditional CMS or blog platforms, you'll be pleased to hear about TypePublish. Today we're sharing with your our TypePublish Review.
This is a great CMS that offers a very attractive and easy to use interface that is both intuitive and clean.
Installation is quite straight forward and simply involves uploading the downloaded gzip file, unzipping (if you are on windows, winrar and 7zip will handle these files fine) and uploading the contents to your hosts public_html directory.

The interface is also visually appealing as well, they've done a good job keeping everything simple.Let's check out the default site.
TypePublish has a very nice default theme with nice use of typography that should be quite easy to adapt to your own. The default theme is simple but very nice visually and provides a great starting point for a site.
The administration system is very nice and clean as well:

As you can see, creating visually appealing pull quotes is easy as are box-outs and simple search engine optimization.. everything is right there and easy to get access to.

Final Thoughts
We're definitely impressed with what the TypePublish team has done. This is an exceptional release that really does well for the community by providing something that is quick, easy and visually appealing. It's easy to install, well laid out and fits all of the needs that the average joe would expect from a content management system.

TypePublish Review - It Makes Publishing Content Easy

We came across a very interesting little CMS that we thought we'd share with you via a quick Perch CMS Review. When it says it's a really simple CMS it's not kidding.
If you've ever played with the likes of <a href="/cushycms-review/">CushyCMS</a> or other similar products that allow you to add tags to existing pages which in turn enables them to be editable by the interface, then you'll feel right at home with Perch.
The difference, however, is that Perch is available for download and can be hosted on your own network as opposed to being hosted on someone elses.
Perch is not free but is available for £35 and there are no other fees after this.

It's quite easy to use and doesn't take much to set up. You can create your own demo install to try it out if you like. Here are some screenshots from a demo we created to help introduce you to the product.
You can filter your content by type using some handy menus on the left.
It's a nice small product for a reasonable price and if you are looking for something simple and effective to allow you clients to have an easy way to manage their sites, this might be a good option to consider.

A Quick Perch CMS Review

There aren't normally a large number of sites providing premium Drupal themes, but we felt that we should help showcase some on a monthly basis in hopes that the number of participating sites increases. We personally feel there is a strong market for them and we'd love to see more advanced themes than the normal ones released on Drupal.org daily.
Here are the three new theme releases for April that we know of. Let us know if you are aware of others.

Premium Drupal Theme Releases for April 2009

With all of the buzz encircling Acquia lately, we thought it prudent to share our Acquia Drupal review with our readers since we've never truly delved in to see what Acquia's rendition of Drupal is made of.
To get started, we decided to test the Acquia Drupal Installer stack which is available from the Acquia website and is a packaged of Apache, PHP, MySQL, PHPMyadmin and the Acquia Drupal version. The stack installer installs them all and allows you to quickly get to the nitty gritty and start playing.
The Install Process
To start with, we downloaded the latest stack from the<a href="http://acquia.com/downloads" target="_blank"> Acquia website</a> and launched the install process:

Here you can see the included modules for this installation. The release we are using is two days old so it's nice and fresh.

Now it's time to launch the stack and see if everything works as expected.

What the Acquia team have done here is include a large number of modules that integrate well and expand the functionality of Drupal which essentially gives you an almost complete Drupal installation with the most commonly used modules all preconfigured for your use. It also provides integration with the Acquia network which is not unlike the RHN that Redhat offers for it's linux distribution product line (well, same concept anyways).

Acquia is really designed to make the best use of Drupal and the Acquia Network which monitors the site, incorporates spam protection functionality and incorporates Acquia Search functionality to the site. Rates are quite reasonable and range from $199/yr to $8000/yr depending on your requirements. Acquia is a great step forward for Drupal and seems to fit in well with a common trend that open source projects are starting to lean towards. It's always a great idea to offer more than one option for people. WordPress has AutoMattic, Elgg has their commercial venture and Acquia has theirs. We're sure that we're bound to see more and more projects starting to follow suit as these types of ventures allow open source projects to offer additional income generating services to those interested while still staying true to the open source model.
For the cost that Acquia runs, it's really rather silly to not go this route if you are planning to run a site that expects to draw any reasonable amount of traffic. While it's true that you can make it happen on your own if you really want to, for the price Acquia charges, you get experts and the services the network offers really can't be beat.
