Umbraco 14 Blossoms with a Fresh Architecture, Delivering Enhanced Customization and Extensibility

Sitecore have made their Experience Platform 8 available for general release.
Revealed at Sitecore's 2014 Symposium, this latest version of the Sitecore Experience Platform enables marketers to create, deliver and optimize unique digital experiences throughout the customer lifecycle.
Also known as Sitecore XP 8, the new platform shortens the time it takes to gain insights, make marketing decisions, and then put them into action.
Data analytics are built in, giving marketers constant feedback on content effectiveness and performance, while recommending actions accordingly. Automatic testing and continuous content optimization ensures that everything can be constantly refined if necessary.

New Interface, Intelligent Insights & More

Sitecore 8 is undoubtedly going to empower the marketing teams around the world, and in turn the enterprising entities they work for. Here's a break down of what's new.
Brand New Interface: Sitecore XP 8 has a completely new user interface, providing a clean, consistent user experience for every Sitecore user. All features still work like they did in previous versions, too. This all makes learning to use Sitecore much quicker and easier, and lowers training and support costs.
Single Customer View: The Sitecore Experience 8 Profile provides a single view of each individual customer, used for real time personalization, segmentation and analytics. Sitecore collects and connects data about the whole customer experience, making it immediately available to marketers to continue ongoing conversations and provide highly relevant and personalized experiences for their customers.
Intelligent Analytics & Insights: Sitecore XP 8 shortens the time it takes to gain insights, make a decision and take action. Sitecore uses Engagement Value to measure what’s working, what’s not, and recommends what action to take, throughout Sitecore’s Experience Marketing tools. Sitecore’s Experience Analytics help marketers understand what is performing, and with whom. Sitecore also harnesses and analyzes data from non-Sitecore sites, CRM, ERP, and POS systems.
Non-stop Testing & Optimization: With Sitecore XP 8, everything can be optimized. All content changes can now be automatically A/B tested, by any content creator. Personalized content can be tested against its default control base content. Advanced optimization experts also have all the tools they need to set up sophisticated test scenarios, like multi-variate tests, built into the platform. So every component and every channel can be fine-tuned for performance, continuously.
Dynamic Segmentation & Automation: Sitecore enables target segments to be created based on any information in the Experience Profile – like demographic data and behavior – for real-time content personalization, email communication, and automated nurturing campaigns. Segments are directly usable with Sitecore’s automation and email marketing capabilities.
Cross-channel Experience Delivery: Sitecore customers can now use Sitecore as a central hub to manage all of their digital properties, even non-Sitecore sites. New customers can start to leverage Sitecore functionality immediately on existing sites, and marketers inheriting legacy sites can rapidly bring them under the brand umbrella.
Michael Seifert, the CEO of Sitecore, made the following comments.

“The goal with Sitecore XP 8 was to give time back to marketers and free them up to be marketers again. Sitecore makes it simple for all marketers to create unique customer experiences – by knowing every customer, and shaping each experience.”

Sitecore Commerce Unveiled: the First Enterprise-grade eCommerce Integrated .NET CXM

Nuxeo, the Open Source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) company, today announced that it has seen significant growth in the ECM marketplace – particularly in North America. In 2009, Nuxeo more than doubled its revenue, launched several new products and features developed in conjunction with the open source community and won several industry accolades. The open source document management company also now has expanded to 50+ employees in Paris and Boston and more than 50 partners worldwide.
“Our experience over the past 12 + months in North America is that there is a large segment of the market that want the breadth and depth of larger content management systems from first generation ECM vendors such as EMC, IBM, Open Text and Oracle – but today they require more modern, extensible architectures and lower overall costs,” said Eric Barroca, CEO of Nuxeo. “Our appeal is a feature rich ECM platform and packaged applications that address the architectural and functional needs of large enterprises, but are also easily deployable in a wide range of environments and extended and developed by customers themselves.”
2009 highlights include:
– Major Growth of Subscriber Base – Nuxeo has tripled their customer base in 2009, boosted by a move to the North American market and the improvement of its Nuxeo Connect, the company's flagship subscription offering delivering software maintenance & support to its customers. New global customers in 2009 include Orange, one of the world's leading telecommunications and network services companies; Jeppesen, a division of Boeing; EllisDon, one of the largest building contractors in Canada; Serimax, an international full service welding company; Cengage Learning, which makes customized learning solutions for universities, instructors, students, libraries, government agencies, corporations, and professionals; Frequentis, which supports state and local governments with emergency response/command and control applications; and Vilogia, a France-based privately held property management company.
– Revenue Growth: In line with its growing subscriber base, Nuxeo has seen a 285% growth in 2009 revenue compared to close of 2008. This validates the company's strategy to deliver an open source ECM platform as a foundation for content applications. This growth also demonstrates a successful expansion into the North American market and ability to compete with and beat proprietary and open source ECM vendors alike. With demand for Nuxeo Connect subscriptions on the rise, the Nuxeo revenue mix has shifted to more packaged support and maintenance deals. At close of 2009, Nuxeo's revenue is largely driven by its subscription offering.
– Galaxy Partner Program launched – 50 partners — integrators and application providers — have signed up for the Nuxeo Galaxy Partner program since its launch in July 2009. The Nuxeo Galaxy Program gives business and field experts the ability to package their knowledge and offer both horizontal and vertical applications, designed to meet specific content management challenges. Galaxy partners deliver their domain expertise and solutions to their customers as well as to the broader, ever growing Nuxeo community.
– Significant community contributions – Nuxeo was able to expand its product in a number of meaningful ways including through contributions from its open source community. For example, Nuxeo added support for OpenSocial through the contributions of one of its larger customers Leroy Merlin with the Nuxeo DM 5.3 release in October 2009.
– Gained industry accolades – Nuxeo continues to be recognized by leading publications and win awards. It recently won TechWeb’s Intelligent Enterprise Editors’ Choice award that recognizes the most influential technology companies impacting enterprises today. It was also listed as one of “10 open source projects worth checking out” by TechRepublic.
– Now has more than 50 employees, up from 38 in 2008 – Nuxeo continued to grow the number of employees both in Paris, as well as the new office in Boston. Among the high-profile hires was appointing David Cloyd, General Manager of the Americas and Cheryl McKinnon as its first Chief Marketing Officer. McKinnon brought more than fifteen years experience in the ECM space, most recently with Open Text. – Leadership role with Apache Chemistry incubator project & CMIS – Nuxeo spearheaded the creation of the vendor-neutral Apache Chemistry incubator project, which is developing a generic, open source Java reference implementation of the Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) standard. Nuxeo also participates on the OASIS CMIS technical committee, which is working on creating a standard web services infrastructure to allow enterprises to more easily share information with multiple ECM systems as well as between ERP and CRM systems.
2010 also off to a record start with the releases of Nuxeo DAM and Nuxeo Studio. The Nuxeo Digital Asset Management offering, Nuxeo DAM, helps organizations catalogue, process, store, retrieve, and distribute rich media content, including images, audio, and video. Nuxeo Studio is the configuration and customization environment for Nuxeo EP, Nuxeo DM and Nuxeo DAM. Nuxeo Studio is available to subscription customers to help them accelerate application building with a simple web-hosted design tool. Nuxeo DAM is driving new deals early in 2010, with the first closed contract achieved within 30 days of product launch.

Hyland, an enterprise content management (ECM) and process management provider, announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Alfresco Software – an open source content services platform.
Both vendors appeared on the Gartner Magic Quadrant for ECM in 2019, with Hyland ranking as a “Leader” in the overall category. With Alfresco firmly in a challenger position, the combination brings a number of market-leading advantages to Hyland’s global growth strategy – particularly as it looks to the cloud.
“With this acquisition, Alfresco brings significant geographic and industry experience to Hyland, as well as an open-source community as a new source of product innovation,” said Jay Bhatt, president and CEO of Alfresco. “Both companies share the same passion for customer success and innovation and together will offer increased value for customers and partners.”
Hyland’s news is the latest in a recent “buying spree” that’s been playing out across the digital experience landscape. In just the past few months alone, Acquia received a major investment from Vista Equity Partners, Episerver announced plans to buy Optimizely, and just last week Nordic Capital acquired 70% of Siteimprove.
A leading ECM provider, Hyland is best known for its Onbase and Perceptive content management products, which securely centralize enterprise content and deliver relevant information to users across a wide variety of industries – including healthcare, finance, insurance, higher education and manufacturing.
Headquartered in Boston, Alfresco offers a modern, cloud-native Digital Business Platform that delivers enterprise content services and solutions to connect, manage, and protect critical information for organizations. Alfresco’s cloud capabilities may be a big ingredient in Hyland’s recipe for success as they eye a more cloud-centric strategy to scale their growth.

A Legacy of Strategic Acquisitions

Alfresco is one of Hyland’s many purchases, which have included a number of smaller digital optimization tools. Just this year, Hyland acquired Another Monday, the robotic process automation (RPA) software, Streamline Health ECM, and Learning Machine, a company that develops and markets blockchain-secured digital credentialing solutions. Other acquisitions include OneContent, Perceptive (which became one of their flagship products) and many more.
“We continue to grow our business and advance our platform organically and via acquisitions,” said Bill Priemer, president and CEO of Hyland. “This acquisition will expand our global reach, enabling us to help more organizations achieve their digital transformation goals and become more informed, empowered, and connected.”
Alfresco has also had its own share of acquisitions, purchasing its long-time services partner, Technology Services Group (TSG), to leverage their deep expertise in the insurance, manufacturing, life sciences, and compliance verticals. They also purchased Pernexas to add their portfolio of SAP capabilities.

Why the Alfresco Acquisition is Important

Over the years, Alfresco has grown into a respected and innovative enterprise content management provider with an array of proven solutions. But perhaps their most prudent and prescient decision was embracing the cloud – and partnering with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to scale their service offerings. Within the ECM industry, this has proven to be a uniquely strategic asset, and one that Hyland can use to accelerate their journey to a more modern, cloud-native posture. If properly integrated, this could be a game changer for Hyland – the kind that puts them in the leadership position on the Gartner Magic Quadrant.

About Hyland

Hyland is an enterprise content management (ECM) software platform, combining integrated document management, business process management, and records management in a single application. Contentful, the leading content infrastructure for digital teams, today announced new features designed to enhance and streamline the authoring and editing experience for everyone who manages content at scale. These new features provide enterprises with a set of tools to create a custom authoring hub, which organizations can use as a single control center to create, optimize and deliver content across their entire digital footprint.
According to Forrester Research*, “web content management systems (CMSes) are evolving as channel-centric technologies give way to omnichannel digital efforts, boosting the value of content in all formats delivered to all users. As a result, application development and delivery (AD&D) pros and vendors should not stretch the category of web CMS any further beyond the current generation of solutions. We need a new container to meet tomorrow's challenges: Agile CMS.”
Traditionally, there have been gaps in the offerings of legacy CMS providers and newer cloud-based solutions, meaning an enterprise would be need multiple CMSes, each serving a different purpose. This made the user experience inconsistent, causing a fragmented workflow that was confusing for editors, and difficult for developers. With the new authoring hub, Contentful is one step closer to providing an agile CMS solution which can handle the needs of all digital business teams, initiatives, and channels, with the UI custom-tailored to each.
“Reinforcing our commitment to content infrastructure as the CMS of the future, we’re helping enterprises to build the right technology stack for running content operations at scale,” said Peter Sunna, head of product at Contentful “With these new features, we’re empowering digital teams to build a seamless tool for managing and delivering relevant content without sacrificing any security, localization, compliance, or workflow requirements.”
The authoring hub solves three critical problems – content creators can produce all content in one place; third-party tools and data-backed insights can be embedded directly into the authoring environment; and developers can easily deliver content across all digital channels and customer touchpoints. The new feature set is comprised of:

Rich Text Editor (RTE) – a modern implementation of the classical concept: author content in an intuitive way, while delivering it in a structured format.

Customizable Sidebar – helps teams be more productive by exposing the tools and data they need within the authoring environment.

Extension Framework – provides modern tooling, including a newly open-sourced Contentful design system, for easily building, styling, and deploying in-app widgets and service integrations.

GraphQL API – a query format that enables developers to turn siloed backends into streamlined, high-performance apps and websites.

The Authoring Hub builds on the Contentful Content Hub, which enterprises use to aggregate all of their content in one place and easily update, audit, or share it on any platform. With a wide partner network, Contentful also achieved Amazon Web Services (AWS) Digital Customer Experience (DCX) Competency status, which recognizes that Contentful provides proven technology and deep expertise to help Digital Customer Experience customers by providing end-to-end solutions for all phases of the digital customer acquisition and retention life cycle.

Industry analysts have repeatedly highlighted the need for online retailers to adopt a holistic approach to their operations, taking full account of the overall customer experience. We understand that at Sitecore, it’s the philosophy behind our Customer Experience Platform. The addition of Commerce Server’s enterprise grade e-commerce capabilities means that we can quickly move to a position of leadership in this space to complement our successes and leadership in content management and customer experience.

From our standpoint here at CMS Critic, we see this as a positive change reflecting the need for solid integrations within CMS suites and platforms. Sitecore has made some significant strides this year and we are looking forward to seeing what 2014 brings to the CMS market.
