The Top 10 AI Tools for Small Business: From Automation to a Coordinated Team of AI Agents

As popular in name as these three open source CMS are, the fact of the matter is they are simply NOT the best CMS on the market. I realize that this statement may upset people in their camps but it is a statement of fact.

For years, people's honest intentions have been doing these content management systems a disservice by blindly recommending them for everything under the sun just to help them gain more popularity and a larger user base. What they don't realize, however, is this type of action does more to hurt the project's name than to help it (in most cases). Today, I'm going to explain to you why these three popular CMS simply are not the best ones on the market.

I've been waiting to write this post for some time but I think it's very important and may help people understand how to properly choose a CMS without making blind assumptions that hearing a brand name over and over means it's automatically right for them.

When lurking around Quora and other popular QA websites, I often come across people asking questions about which CMS they should consider for their project. The exchange normally looks something like this:

The question: What CMS should I use?

Reply 1: Definitely Joomla, it's the best!

Reply 2: WordPress all the way!

Reply 3: Drupal is way better, I'd suggest taking a look at it!

This type of blind recommendation, as I mentioned above, not only adds no value to a conversation but also does nothing but further confuse the person who is asking the question in the first place. In this single question, without any qualification of what this user needs or wants from a CMS, three completely different systems with three completely different skill levels have been recommended and the fact is, as much as this may upset those who are in either of these camps, none are the best.

Let's discuss something very important for a moment. This may come as a shock to you but…

There is no BEST CMS.

There, I said it.

I'm sorry to all of you in the Joomla, Drupal, and WordPress camps but the fact of the matter is, but your CMS is simply not the best. Of the thousands of content management systems on the market has their own strengths. There are some that are suited better to blogging, some that are great for complicated projects requiring more of a framework, and some that are better for multilingual websites, and that's just describing a few use cases.

Some of you may be wondering why then, do we have a number of “Best CMS” related categories in our CMS awards. The reason is simple, people want to be able to vote and nominate on their favorite projects and I wanted to make sure that some of the lesser-known projects get their moment in the spotlight. I think it's worth helping projects of all kinds get exposure. While the terminology “Best CMS for Enterprise ” may not seem like the best idea, I've tried to break them into specific categories to help align them with a purpose so that rather than a simple Best CMS award, which wouldn't be very valid given what I've just told you above.. a Best CMS for Enterprise, for instance, is easier to identify because you are identifying its purpose. I don't like using the term Best CMS in any wording which is why I've split them into more specific categories this year.

Now, let me tell you why these products are not the best CMS on the market. I'm sure this is likely going to upset some people but I think these things are important to identify.

WordPress is NOT the Best CMS

WordPress is, first and foremost, a blogging platform. Yes, I know, there are those who say it's the best for everything under the sun including corporate websites and more but the fact of the matter is that when the developers are working on features for WordPress, writing blog posts is their #1 focus, not whether or not it can run a realty website or law firm.

Furthermore, WordPress suffers from something a lot of content management systems suffer from.. too much dependence on plugins. On top of this, plugins are not tested by any WordPress core developer to ensure they pass some form of QA before entering the plugin repository. As a result, issue such as this one can occur: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2458080/thousands-of-sites-compromised-through-wordpress-plugin-vulnerability.html

More Plugins = More Bloat

Again, there will be those who argue with me on this but it's a common issue across content management systems everywhere and with WordPress specifically, it is virtually impossible (note that I said virtually) to run WordPress without installing at minimum 5 plugins from the plugin directory.

Why is this an issue?

Simply put, the more plugins you install, the more your website performance suffers. Sadly, even plugins developed by Automattic (the mother company of WordPress) can cause massive slowdowns in load time and performance (I'm talking to you Jetpack). While the intentions of the developers who are releasing the plugins are good, this often leaves those running WordPress with the task of updating plugins constantly.

Old Plugins and No Warnings

On top of this, a HUGE percentage of the plugins in the WordPress repository is old and out of date yet still available to install on your system. This is a huge issue as these older plugins still exist and are not removed. There really needs to be an automated system that removes plugins older than say, one year, automatically if they are not updated otherwise someone can unknowingly install something that can expose their website to vulnerabilities.

To test out this, I was able to install (without any warning whatsoever) a plugin from 2008 on my system unknowingly. How does something like this happen? The plugin search capability within WordPress does not show the date the plugin was developed or warn you that it might not be compatible unless you hit the details button. If you search and read the excerpt of a plugin and think it's what you are looking for, you can hit install and not have any idea that the plugin is 4 years old and likely to cause massive problems with your system.

To be blunt, this is a complete joke and I'm floored that the repository hasn't been purged of this old garbage by now, or at the very least, a warning hasn't even been implemented that checks the date and compatibility against your system and alerts you (or better yet prevents you) from installing a plugin that isn't current.

Don't believe there are a ton of old plugins? Check this link. This is just a small sampling of a huge problem. Do you really think installing something developed for the release of WordPress from 2008 would be a good idea?

**Update: WordPress has made some changes to their plugin directory to attempt to identify compatibility and updated dates but there are still major issues. While they have begun to rank more updated plugins and ones that are tested with the most current release first and older ones far back in the directory, you are still able to install old plugins with absolutely no warning. Today, as a test, I attempted to install a plugin that was 6 years old on my WordPress install and it worked perfectly with no warning. This is a major security issue and a huge concern that needs to be addressed as far as I'm concerned.**

Constant Updates

You see, as a new person who is using WordPress for the first time seeing an update notice, you assume it's a good thing to do it for security reasons. The problem with this is that more often than not, a simple plugin update has the potential to bring your site down hard and leave you scrambling to find a developer to help you figure out what just happened.

To be fair, this isn't a WordPress specific issue (although it is very common with WP) but rather an issue with a significant number of CMS that rely on plugins (and believe me, the list is long).

A simple solution to this would be to have a fail-safe in place that copies your website, performs the update in a sandbox and, if everything goes well, then executes it on the main site. However, this type of system isn't very common unless you are using a WordPress-managed hosting solution like WPEngine that allows you to have a dev copy to test updates on.

Conclusion

WordPress isn't a bad CMS and I'm not attempting to claim that it is. What I am saying is that, like all CMS out there, it has its faults and specific use cases when it's best recommended.

The fact of the matter is, there are many other CMS that could do a better job in situations where WordPress ends up getting recommended and these system simply don't have the same word of mouth or marketing prowess that WordPress does, therefore they never get explored.

The problem with plugins is that they cause bloat and bloat means your website slows down. Sure, you can use a caching plugin but that in itself is also a plugin developed by a third party and if you want support, you have to purchase that separately. Why caching is not built into WordPress as of yet still eludes me.

Can WordPress be a good option for a realty website, a law firm or something similar? Absolutely but rather than making a recommendation based on no information adds no value to a conversation. It's important to ask qualifying questions and find out what the individual needs and wants from a project, how it will be used, who will be using it, and so on before attempting to help trim down the list of content management systems.

Joomla is NOT the Best CMS

There are lots of people that love Joomla and that's great. The Joomla community has really helped shine the light on open source products on the market. It is, however, simply not the best CMS out there.

The Plugin Game

Joomla suffers from the exact same issue that WordPress suffers from when it comes to plugins. Plugins are not tested against the system by Joomla core developers before being added to the repository (this same issue is persistent across a ton of CMS and isn't Joomla specific)and there are also a significant number of outdated plugins from 2010 – 2012 throughout the Joomla extensions directory.

I haven't had an opportunity to test out if Joomla will let you install an outdated plugin or not as their Joomla demo was not functioning correctly for me in order to test this so I cannot speak to that capability on the latest version. Hopefully, it blocks outdated ones or at least gives a warning.

Hacked?

Joomla websites, for some reason, also seem to have a high rate of hacking attempts against them. I don't blame this on Joomla specifically but I think it's more due to the fact that Joomla is popular and therefore, hackers focus on it and target websites using it specifically. This happens just as often with WordPress to be sure but I tend to hear more often from people who have attempted to use Joomla, been hacked, and are looking for new solutions.

No, I am not making this up. It's the #1 thing I am contacted about. To those Joomla fans out there that are ready to freak out that I mentioned this, I am not saying Joomla is the most hacked CMS by any stretch. I am simply pointing out that in my case, I am contacted about it more often than any others.

In Joomla's defense, I personally think this is largely due to the core issue in this post.. Joomla being recommended for projects it isn't best suited for. What I mean by this is the more people that attempt to set up Joomla with no knowledge of the CMS and that are using it for a purpose that differs from its core strengths, the more likely they are to make mistakes and end up with a hacked site.

Poor recommendations = Poor Experience

I say this because products such as Joomla and Drupal tend to be geared more towards those familiar with content management systems more than say, WordPress would be. They are slightly more advanced products. In my mind, I see the top three in order of difficulty: WordPress, Joomla, Drupal (Beginner user, Intermediate user, Advanced user). Improperly using a CMS for a situation it's not best suited for can result in problems and a poorly configured system which in turn, can lead to issues down the road.

Joomla also tends to be a bit more advanced than WordPress and those who recommend it to new users who don't have experience with content management systems or have never used one before are doing them and the product a disservice. There are far easier CMS out there but Joomla is definitely on the right track lately with its releases and is getting much better (the interface is light years above what it was in the 2.5 series).

Halfway House

In some ways, Joomla is halfway between WordPress and Drupal.

As previously stated, it's in the middle when it comes to usage difficulty, but this is also true for Joomla's general flexibility and functionality. WordPress can be stretched – in theory at least – to create a very wide range of website types, from blogs to directories. Drupal, which will soon be discussed, can be used to create almost any kind of website thanks to its building block nature.

Joomla doesn't stretch quite as far as WordPress, and on the occasions that it does, you can be sure the developers had an uncomfortable time making it happen. Likewise, Joomla cannot be used as a framework to piece together website elements the same way Drupal does. Joomla is the piggy in the middle. It works for some, but for others, it only serves to frustrate.

Conclusion

As you can see, like WordPress, Joomla has plenty of issues too and while it is a good product, it's not the best CMS on the market nor is it suitable to just recommend it for anything without thinking things through carefully and planning out a use case to see if it's a good fit.

Drupal is NOT the Best CMS

Here's where things get interesting. In my opinion, Drupal isn't a CMS. It's a CMF. This stands for content management framework and basically means that you can think of Drupal like Lego, you can build anything you want with it with virtually no limitations. It truly is an amazing product BUT (and here's the big problem) people still tend to recommend it for projects that require way less complex and easy solutions.

As I've mentioned numerous times already, this is not helping your favorite CMS succeed. This does a disservice and causes someone to attempt to use it for a purpose it isn't intended for (or that it isn't best suited for) and end up frustrated. We all know what frustrated people do right? They spread the word about how frustrated they are.

So, rather than just saying something unhelpful like “Use Drupal, it's the best!!!” perhaps you should consider what Drupal was designed to do and what projects it is best suited for before making a recommendation.

The Module (or plugin?) Conundrum

To Drupal's credit, they've done something right with their module directory (same as plugins for those of you who don't get the lingo). They have a drop-down so you can ensure you only see modules that are under active development and are actively maintained.

Why do you not do this Joomla and WordPress? Yes, I'm talking to you.

Personally, I see no reason for maintaining these downloads but perhaps I am missing something here. I will say that in my opinion, Drupal has the best modules directory of the lot so they get bonus points there.

It just ain't easy

Let me apologize in advance to all Drupal fans for this next statement. Drupal simply isn't easy to use. In fact, it's one of the more complex content management frameworks out there, and people who think setting up Drupal properly is a quick and easy process are definitely going to be in for a shock.

Drupal can be massively overwhelming to a new user but, in the right hands, just like Joomla and WordPress, it can also be great when used properly.

Conclusion

Of the top three, I think Drupal has the most potential for a wider variety of projects considering how versatile it is and the fact that it is, first and foremost, a framework for building complex projects and web applications.

So What is the Best CMS?

This may come as a complete shock to everyone but..

Put simply, there isn't one and there never will be.

People who ask the question “What is the Best CMS” are just like the people who ask the guy playing Everquest “What is the Best Class”. It's a question that, no matter the context, simply cannot be answered accurately because there are way too many variables to consider.

A gentleman I admire, Adriaan Bloem, I think said it best in his post titled ” What's the Best CMS? ” on his personal blog. To quote him:

Not only is there no “best CMS” in general; there isn’t even a best CMS for you.

All of these tools have drawbacks and shortcomings. Getting the right one means getting one that is the best fit for your scenarios and constraints. But it’s equally important to know the drawbacks. You’re not just committing to the awesome advantages — you’ll always get annoying problems in return. If you know about these in advance instead of ignoring them, you can live with them — and mitigate the problem. Go in eyes wide open.

– Adriaan Bloem, OffandOnline.net

Well said Adriaan. I couldn't have said it better myself.

So, to all of you out there who think your CMS is the best, I hate to break your heart but it isn't. Nobody has the best CMS because there is not the best CMS nor will there ever be.

So, what content management systems should you consider trying instead of these three? Here are some alternatives. Note that if your CMS is not listed, it's not a slight, I have chosen a few example solutions off the top of my head to mention. The position in this list is based on my opinion based on experience. Hopefully, you find them helpful.

Nebo, a human-centered agency built for the digital age has announced the launch of NeboVoice CMS to offer voice services to marketers. This standalone solution for voice apps and skills follows the announcement of the beta Voice CMS functionality that was added to NeboCMS earlier this year.

The NeboVoice CMS gives brands the ability to more easily capitalize on future opportunities in a rapidly growing space. Much like the functionality of the base CMS, the standalone NeboVoice CMS integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Home allowing marketers to publish audio, video, image and text-to-voice content to skills, actions and flash briefings. Content is able to be published in real-time or scheduled allowing users to create better experiences for their audience.

"One of the biggest barriers to creating voice apps and skills is the lack of easy-to-use technology to manage and push voice content," said Jenn Vickery, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Nebo.

According to TechCrunch, voice assistants in use will triple to eight billion by 2023. In 2019, Amazon surpassed 100,000 Alexa Skills on its devices globally, while Google topped more than one million unique Google Actions available to users. Along with the creation of the NeboVoice CMS, Nebo has a fully dedicated Voice team to offer clients the ability to take advantage of current voice capabilities and trends.

"Voice is the fastest growing consumer technology in the history of the world," said Jay Goodwin, Strategist and Voice Team Lead at Nebo. "Brands and marketers are trying to figure out what their voice strategy should be and how to implement and manage their solutions. We want to empower them to do that on their terms."

This approach makes it easier to create faster websites, mobile apps, and essentially any digital solution using content from a central repository.

"We are thrilled to be able to contribute to Agility CMS's growth trajectory through this funding," said Garron Helman, CEO of Venbridge Ltd. "At Venbridge, our goal is to support Canadian companies as they scale their operations, develop their technologies, and reach a wider client-base, so we're very excited for Agility CMS's future expansion."

Agility CMS is building on the momentum they initiated upon selling their professional services division in 2018 and strengthening their partner network. While a decoupled architecture has always been a strength, now the company is more tightly focused on the newer tools and practices to enable those partners and developers to work faster with more flexibility. Their reference architecture allows content to be defined, federated and shared across an entire organization.

"This funding will allow us to invest time and energy into the Content-First approach of our platform and educate customers, partners and developers on how to execute on this," said Jon Voigt, CEO. "We're helping people digitally transform their whole mindset on new ways to build their content and platform architecture in order to empower their team. The result is faster teams, better platforms and more digital success."

Unlike traditional models, where a single website is tightly linked to a CMS installation, Agility CMS uses a different approach. An organization can arrange its content in an appropriate structure and share that content to any of its online properties. That structure is called Content Architecture, and it includes Shared Lists, Items and Templates, as well as custom fields that are specific to each organization. This structure can last well beyond the lifetime of any single app or website.

"Many of our top customers have re-used or built upon the same Content Architecture for many iterations of their web properties," said Joel Varty, President. "Website and app front-ends come and go, and our customers can now build them even faster by leveraging their existing content investments, using technologies such as JAMstack and Static Site Generators."

Agility CMS has also combined its other offerings into all-in-one bundles, something no other Content-First or Headless CMS vendor has done. These packages include Page Management, Ecommerce, Online Ticketing, User Generated Content, Website Search, and a robust Support package with an SLA.

Agility CMS Secures Funding to Help Customers Build a Faster Web

Umbraco today launched Umbraco Heartcore, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) “headless” content management system (CMS) for easily structuring and sharing content across multiple platforms, devices and channels. Available software development kits (SDKs) let app developers use the software language and platform of their choice to build a highly configurable and easy-to-use content management infrastructure for any website, smartphone, smartwatch or other smart (Internet of Things—IoT) device. Unlike other headless CMS platforms, Umbraco Heartcore is built on the flexible, friendly and full-featured open source Umbraco CMS, and inherits its mature and powerful capabilities to intuitively organize large volumes of content.

Headless is defined as a back-end-only CMS built as a content repository that makes content accessible via a RESTful application program interface (API) for display on any device. While traditional CMS platforms are ideal for managing content on a single website, a headless CMS allows developers to create and maintain multiple digital platforms with synchronous content updates.

“With Umbraco Heartcore, it’s never been easier to ‘future-proof’ and facilitate content creation and organization across myriad devices,” said Kim Sneum Madsen, Umbraco’s chief executive officer. “Half a million websites rely on the powerful yet friendly capabilities of the Umbraco CMS, so we are well-positioned to help companies expand their digital footprint beyond websites to reach audiences through new channels and devices. With its logical content structure capabilities, the ultimate editing experience Umbraco is known for, and the ability to use the software of their choice for development, Heartcore is poised to be the platform of choice for both long-time and new Umbraco users.”

Umbraco Heartcore Organizes Content for All Developers, Multichannels

Umbraco Heartcore uniquely lets editors create a logical content structure so they can more easily and more quickly manage, find and update large amounts of content. For example, a main branch of the content tree could be “Movie genres” with sub-branches such as “Thrillers,” “Romance” and “Science Fiction.” The actual “Movies” would be located below the genres, and editors could make new movie content available by creating new movies, placing them into the appropriate genres and adding additional relationships such as “Starring actors” or “Subtitles”, “Synopsis”, “Trailers” and “Related movies.” This content would be made available on websites, streaming services, or in ad campaigns, or any other relevant context.

In addition to this unique organizational structure, Umbraco Heartcore offers:

Greater flexibility when integrating new delivery formats and introducing advanced or mobile functionality to an application
Decreased development time, deployment and user testing to get content in front of customers faster
Enhanced security, including straightforward user management that ensures that each user only has access to relevant, permitted areas
Overall better performance when deploying information to end users
Immediate software and API upgrades through the Umbraco Cloud

SDKs Make Heartcore Accessible to Any Developer, on Any Platform

In addition to the well-structured back-office, Umbraco Heartcore offers SDKs that allow any developer—even those who aren’t familiar with Umbraco—to use their chosen language to develop applications.
Global video creation platform Clipchamp today announced it has been named one of Dropbox’s new Extensions partner apps, as the company continues to scale its presence in the US market and plans to open an on-the-ground office to manage high-calibre partnerships locally.

Dropbox introduced Extensions in late 2018 to reduce app switching for its users by enabling them to take action on files stored in Dropbox. Now, Dropbox has expanded and updated its partner apps to include a new Clipchamp integration. Users can utilize Clipchamp to efficiently and seamlessly create, edit and publish high-quality videos right from Dropbox’s new desktop app and dropbox.com.

With over eight million registered users worldwide, Clipchamp provides all the tools needed to produce beautiful and impactful video content without relying on expensive equipment, complicated software or any previous video production experience.

Based in Brisbane, Australia, Clipchamp has seen significant customer growth in the US among SMEs, mum-and-dad businesses, influencers and creatives, and it is the largest market for the company.

Co-founder and CEO of Clipchamp, Alex Dreiling, said: “Creating video does not have to be an intimidating or overwhelming experience. Clipchamp is empowering anyone and everyone to create something they didn't believe they could do themselves. Add Clipchamp to the modern workspace offered by Dropbox and users have the ultimate video creation, sharing and collaboration platform.”

“It is full steam ahead for Clipchamp as we look to grow our company’s presence in the US. We have had impressive traction to date in the market and we are excited to continue to build our user base locally and further develop valuable partnerships with highly notable companies, such as Dropbox,” Mr Dreiling added.

“At Dropbox, we’re focused on connecting users with the tools they love so they can get the most out of their work, said Billy Blau, Global VP of Business Development and Partnerships at Dropbox. “With the launch of our latest Extensions partners, we’re continuing to deliver on that promise — integrating key tools to help our users navigate their workflows more seamlessly right from Dropbox.”

Contentful, the leading enterprise headless CMS provider, today announced the release of a new Optimizely application, which allows developers to build content experimentation into Contentful, enabling faster experimentation and more efficient content delivery.

The new application allows marketers to test critical marketing content without leaving Contentful. This enables more and faster content experimentation, resulting in increased customer conversions and improved customer experiences.

“Time is money for all digital products and experiments. Contentful takes pride in helping customers deliver great experiences quickly, and the new Optimizely application will only make this even more possible,” said Sascha Konietzke, CEO and co-founder of Contentful. “Not having to leave the Contentful platform to create and run content experiments will give our customers yet another competitive advantage when it comes to the speed, agility and flexibility of the types of content they can deliver.”

The Optimizely app removes hurdles for users by integrating the two products so practitioners can focus on the creation and testing of great content instead of configuration. Experimentation with variables like branding, messaging and user experience is critical to boosting customer conversions, driving more revenue. The new application also minimizes context switching and mistakes by reducing manual copying. It adds content variations to reference fields, assigns content variations to experiments and monitors experimentation status.

“Successful brands integrate experimentation throughout the customer journey to ensure they maximize every digital touchpoint to drive engagement, increase advocacy and grow their businesses,” said Byron Jones, director of product at Optimizely. “Our latest collaboration with Contentful makes it even easier and more efficient for marketers to use data-driven decision making to scale their experimentation programs and eliminate the guesswork to deliver the best digital experience for their customers.”

The Optimizely application also makes it easier for users to supercharge their experiments with structured content by connecting it with Contentful. Users can ask the Optimizely platform to select a variation based on targeting criteria, which allows them to pick matching content from Contentful.

Contentful Launches New Optimizely Application that Enhances the Content Delivery Process to Drive Great Digital Experiences

Today EvoWeb Technologies released EWCart, an entirely new eCommerce solution designed for small businesses that want a reliable, secure, fast eCommerce platform with the added bonus of their own web development team at no extra charge. This affordable, full-featured new platform will include full maintenance and support, and top-of-the-line servers, while also providing customers with a bespoke website and a personal account manager, giving them the tools they need to succeed.

While other eCommerce platforms will only include the platform itself, EWCart aims to stand-out by providing users with a full-fledged eCommerce solution. They provide small businesses with everything they need to sell, update inventory, track orders, and accept payments, as well as their own web development team that can tailor their business website to their needs. This will save businesses thousands in seed capital and maintenance fees, as EWCart takes care of that as well.

EvoWeb Technologies has discovered the high cost of starting an eCommerce website, notably the fees to hire a developer to redesign a template to suit sellers business after paying eCommerce platforms fees. “The eCommerce industry is growing faster than we can all imagine but the cost of set-up is preventing lots of sellers from leveraging on this fantastic market,” the CEO of EvoWeb Technologies, Mustafa Hussaini, noted.

Statista estimated there are no lesser than 1.6 billion digital buyers worldwide and predicted there will be 2.14 billion in 2021. Buyers are reportedly tapping into these customers base and most of them get discouraged due to the cost of designing and hosting their online store.

According to Atlantic Business Technology Inc., the cost of starting an eCommerce website can range from $5,000 to $100,000. On careful analysis, this cost always starts from $20-$60 and can escalate due to the cost of hiring developers to customize the website.

In response to the cost challenges and difficulty in management, the EvoWeb Technologies group of programmers designed an eCommerce platform, EWCart, which offers fully customizable eCommerce platforms that are affordable and easy to manage by all sellers.

To access the platform claimed to be the best and most affordable for all sellers by its parent company, visit https://www.ewcart.io.
SiteLock today announced new feature enhancements to SMART® Database (SMART/DB™) which extends monitoring and scanning support for Joomla! and any other web platform using a MySQL database in addition to existing WordPress capability. With this industry-first offering, 90 million global small and medium-sized businesses can now automatically protect their website databases from various types of malware that could steal customer data, allowing them to conduct online business safer than ever before.

A database controls, writes, and processes all dynamic data that is collected and stored on a website including form completions, online purchases, and various types of content. While a database is a powerful piece of a website’s infrastructure, according to SiteLock data, 30% of malware cleaned was located within a website’s database. These types of attacks can threaten customer data, potentially impacting a small business’ reputation, or worse, its ability to stay afloat.

“Given that most small businesses do not have the budgets or resources to constantly monitor every aspect of their websites, including their databases, they are at an even greater risk of potential compromise,” said Neill Feather, Chief Innovation Officer at SiteLock. “If left undetected, a compromised website database can have a devastating impact on a small business – exposing customer data and potentially impacting its bottom line. Should anything malicious occur in the database, the entire online history of a small business, such as posts, comments, and customer records– may be lost forever. SiteLock is the first security provider to solve this problem by delivering automated database monitoring and remediation that is affordable and accessible to any small business.”

The threat landscape continues to evolve at an alarming rate. The average website is attacked approximately every 23 minutes or 62 times per day. It’s no longer a matter of if you’ll be attacked, but when. The updates to SMART/DB provide a way for any small business owner, or even bloggers who aggregate an audience, to fortify against these growing threats with an advanced level of detection.

To facilitate technological innovation within media organisations, nonprofit software developer Sourcefabric z.ú. has launched a new roundtable to help news agencies share development costs and improve the tools that deliver their journalism to clients.

Called the Superdesk Wire Club, the forum will serve as a development steering committee for news agencies that use Superdesk, our open-source newsroom management solution. Through the club, members will identify features or functions that are of shared interest and then decide on collectively funding their development. Founding members of the Superdesk Wire Club include Norwegian news agency NTB, Belgian news agency Belga, and the Australian Associated Press (AAP). Additional agencies are expected to join soon.

“This is about people talking to each other, but it’s also about coordinating solutions,” says Karel Petrák, Sourcefabric project manager and Wire Club organiser. “What do Superdesk users need and want most? The Wire Club will help us answer that question.”

Since Superdesk’s public release in early 2016, nearly a dozen publishers have adopted the CMS or are transitioning to the software, including some of Europe’s leading news agencies. Every month, the platform delivers more than 300,000 news items to over 80 million readers on four continents. Because Superdesk is built on open-source code base, users can collectively make improvements; the Superdesk Wire Club will facilitate this collaboration.

Geir Terje Ruud, NTB’s chief development officer, said: “It's a good idea to build a system for cooperation between customers and users on systems like Superdesk. If we, as customers, can pull or push in the same direction, development will be faster, more efficient and definitely closer to the needs of the customers.”

Tom Wuytack, Belga’s CIO, added: “The Wire Club will allow us to sit in the driver’s seat to ensure that further evolution of the Superdesk software remains relevant for Belga. It will also give us direct insight into useful innovations and integrations from other agencies.”

With journalism still facing difficult economic times, news agencies have begun to cooperate to improve efficiencies and address shared technological challenges. For instance, a group of six European news agencies – led by Dutch agency ANP – is working to develop a system to determine what content users find most engaging. Another initiative, a collaboration between the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur and STT, the Finnish news agency, aims to help news agencies track and match content to reader preferences.

But the Superdesk Wire Club is one of the only forums in the world for news agencies to partner on the development of a common newsroom CMS.

Aslan Aslanov, President of the News Agencies World Congress, says disruptive technologies – particularly social media and mobile platforms – have made technological cooperation among media organisations all the more vital. Any network that brings news agencies together “can help agencies find significant solutions to [shared] challenges,” he said.

Wolfgang Nedomansky, Managing Director of MINDS International, one of the world’s leading networks of news agency CEOs, CTOs, editors and business professionals, concurs. “Efficiency and collaboration are keys for the success of news agencies in the future,” he says.

Club membership is open only to news agencies. With many of the world’s news agencies facing a variety of commercial, political, and technological challenges, the club’s initial aim is to strengthen this key part of the media industry.

Sourcefabric’s Karel Petrák says: “We want our news-agency partners to have a seat at the Superdesk development table, and the Superdesk Wire Club is one way to do that.”

Sourcefabric launches initiative to help news agencies develop a common newsroom CMS

Contentful, the leading enterprise headless CMS provider, today announced an agile ecommerce solution designed for enterprises to drive online sales by empowering retailers to more efficiently manage content across multiple channels.

To engage customers with more seamless and localized online shopping experiences, Contentful’s content infrastructure solution for ecommerce gives retailers the ability to update content on all digital platforms at once, and to deploy that content at massive, enterprise-grade scale. As a result, retailers can better align content across channels, repurpose existing content to improve its impact, and ensure the right message reaches each target audience.

“Retailers are rethinking their approach to managing content because too often, it’s locked down in a traditional CMS. They need the agility to constantly iterate on campaigns to drive sales. Contentful gives them four to seven times greater speed to market for digital experiences, so they can truly stand out,” says Alyssa Meritt, Director of Content Operations Strategy of Contentful. “For any company hoping to maintain a competitive advantage in retail, a cloud-native agile ecommerce platform is mandatory.”

Agile ecommerce allows retailers to optimize and repurpose their content across multiple channels, and enables developers to swiftly integrate their solutions stack with new technology. Achieving digital maturity means understanding that a good ecommerce solution for content doesn’t stand alone — it needs to be supported by a modern stack of integrated solutions, made possible by open APIs.

Contentful’s integration with existing ecommerce tools, including integrations in the works with CommerceTools and Commerce Layer, accelerates the content and development process for both developers and editors.

With Contentful, brands can build and manage both ongoing and targeted personalized outreach for any seasonal or event-driven campaign, from Black Friday to Superbowl Sunday to Times Square Billboards, and localize this content for markets across the world. Contentful’s Content Delivery API allows editors to update all content through a web app that syncs with any desired platform for consistent, multi-channel campaigns.

“Publish once, sell everywhere is the new standard for successful ecommerce,” says Meritt of Contentful. “The value of moving quickly, without being held back from the development constraints of traditional CMS platforms, is critical for any brand looking for great conversion rates. We’ve seen smaller, nimble brands beating much larger brands, translating to millions of dollars in additional revenue on a single campaign.”

Contentful customers have already achieved significant success in integrating the headless CMS approach to ecommerce needs. Nordic travel operator TUI saw bounce rate decreases by 31% and mobile conversion increase by 11% when it brought its agile ecommerce content to Contentful. With Contentful, TUI delivers new customer touch points five times faster than when it was using a traditional CMS platform.

Xoom, a PayPal service that provides worldwide money transfers, used Contentful to personalize content across 37 languages and more than 80 locations. Xoom now needs only 30 minutes to update content across channels versus the two-week time frame required by legacy tools.

Contentful Unveils Headless CMS Ecommerce Solution for Faster Content Delivery and Improved Sales

Sourcefabric z.ú., Europe’s largest developer of open-source technology for the news media, is doubling the size of its Prague headquarters and merging its German for-profit subsidiary, Sourcefabric GmbH, with its Czech commercial arm, Sourcefabric Ventures s.r.o.

Established in April 2010, parent organisation Sourcefabric z.ú. is a nonprofit developer of open-source software and digital solutions and works to strengthen the editorial and economic independence of media organisations worldwide. This mission-driven development is supported with income generated by Sourcefabric’s subordinate commercial companies, along with donations and project-related funding.

After the organisational merger is completed, global commercial activities will be centered in Prague, where they will be managed by Sourcefabric Ventures s.r.o. The German market, and Sourcefabric’s numerous German customers, will remain a key priority going forward.

With independent media organisations facing a variety of technical and economic challenges, Sourcefabric’s software has been developed to improve newsroom efficiencies. For instance, by automating certain tasks in the news production and distribution processes, news organisations powered by Sourcefabric solutions can free up editors’ time to produce quality journalism.

The core technology powering that vision is Superdesk, a content management and newsroom workflow system developed in partnership with leading news organisations – including the Australian Associated Press (AAP) and the national news agency of Norway (NTB). Since Superdesk’s public release in early 2016, nearly a dozen other publishers have adopted the CMS or are transitioning to the software, including some of Europe’s leading news agencies. Every month, the platform delivers more than 300,000 news items to over 80 million readers on four continents.

Among Superdesk’s strengths is its open-source code base, which allows partner media organisations to collectively make improvements, share development costs, and redistribute needed resources for other journalistic endeavors.

To facilitate this innovative media partnership, Sourcefabric has just launched a news agency collaborative called the Superdesk Wire Club. The goal of this new forum is to bring together Superdesk clients from around the world to guide the system’s future development in line with the particular needs of news agencies. Founding members of the Superdesk Wire Club include Norwegian news agency NTB, Belgian news agency Belga and Australian Associated Press.

Beyond Superdesk, Sourcefabric’s software is used to strengthen journalism and foster media innovations in some of the world’s most restrictive environments. Other tools in its portfolio of solutions for independent media include:

Current Superdesk Publisher projects include two independent news organisations in the Balkans – Insajder.netin Serbia, and Vijesti.me in Montenegro – and Brasil247, one of Brazil’s leading independent media outlets.

Sourcefabric’s renovated headquarters will occupy two floors of Štenc House, an Art Nouveau building near Prague’s Old Town square that housed a printing press and artist studios in the early 20th century.

“Our client base is expanding, and so, too, are our ambitions. Quality journalism is the lifeblood of democratic societies, and open-source technology is the backbone of quality journalism,” said Sourcefabric Managing Director Sava Tatić. “Our goal, therefore, is to ensure that journalists everywhere, operating under any circumstance, have the tools they need to do their work.”
