A new release of Textpattern (<a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/tag/textpattern">news</a>) is available. This version has a focus primarily on security and introduces a number of new changes to the way passwords are handled as well as general security fixes.
Some excerpts from the release announcement:

<li>If you are running an Apache web server, rename the <code>.htaccess-dist</code> file in the <code>/files</code> directory to <code>.htaccess</code> to prohibit direct URL access to your files.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Previously, people with privileges set to ‘None’ could log in and just not see anything — Restricted area — for every tab. Now they are not even permitted entry.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>We have relied on MySQL’s <code>password</code> function for a long time now. MySQL themselves do not recommend this and, moving forward to TXP 5, our goal is to open up the avenue for using other databases, so to rely on MySQL is counter to this philosophy. We have therefore taken the step of implementing phpass from this point forward.This has the implication that passwords are now case-sensitive.</li>
</ul>
This release also mops up some bits and pieces that snuck into 4.3.0. Namely:
<ul>
<li>a few places that still used deprecated attributes, mostly in the tag builder</li>
<li>some Textile security fixes</li>
<li>a bug in <code>&lt;txp:variable /&gt;</code> when dealing with empty values</li>
<li>search engines shouldn’t index ‘Nice try’ messages anymore</li>
<li>messy mode context and <code>get_pref()</code> bugs squashed</li>
</ul>
jQuery has also been upgraded to 1.5.1.

GetSimple CMS 3.0 released

Liferay, Inc., provider of the market’s fastest growing open source portal and collaboration software, recently announced a new Community Leadership Program, designed to give its already active open source community of over 35,000 members additional input into product directions and community affairs. The company has identified a roster of 12 community members of various backgrounds from around the world.
“Our community has been active since 2000 and is one of the most dedicated and vibrant in the open source world,” said James Falkner, Liferay’s Community Manager who spearheaded the program. “This program identifies existing leaders, fosters growth of new leaders, and gives them the opportunity to participate in product development and thought leadership.”
The leadership team consists of a small yet diverse group of developers from a wide spectrum of professional backgrounds, ranging from users and partners to hobbyists and software architects. Many have been contributing to the Liferay platform for several years and boast deep knowledge of the technology, making them capable mentors for newer community members.
“I have been a big fan of Liferay technology for a long time and appreciate how the company continues to keep its community open and inviting for everyone,” said Bendiabdallah Yousri, a developer at SQLI Company and one of Liferay’s newest Community Leaders. “This openness is a big part of what keeps me excited about Liferay—the opportunity to participate makes me want to help evolve the technology.”
The dozen community leaders will be able to participate in product roadmap decisions. They will also have a new Community Verifier status in Liferay’s issue tracking system that allows them to lead other community members in issue reporting, tracking, and resolution. Additional features will be added to this program in the future, which will further enable the growing Liferay open community, open source team.

Liferay Recruits Leaders from the Open Source Community

Over the last week Joomla (see our <a href="/tag/joomla/">joomla review</a>), the enormously popular open source CMS, was downloaded for the 22 millionth time.
22 million. That's an incredible number to achieve, but that's not the only impressive number they've been able to boast about.

Impressive stats indeed. Joomla currently powers about 2.7 % of all websites on the net and has seen huge growth since the release of 1.6.

Pentaho BI Suite 3.8 Puts More Power in the Hands of End Users

Moodle, the open source content management system for learning, has two new releases available.
In addition to a number of bug fixes and small improvements, nine <a href="http://moodle.org/security">security vulnerabilities</a> (7 major, 1 minor, 1 potential problem) in 2.0.1 and three security vulnerabilities (all major) in 1.9.10 have been discovered and fixed.
The releases themselves are available from the <a href="http://download.moodle.org/">Moodle download</a> page or CVS/Git.

JIRA 4.3 & Confluence 3.5 Released

Bitrix, Inc., announced the release of a new version of its content management system (CMS) today – Bitrix Site Manager ASP.NET 5.5, targeted at website content editors, designers and developers who prefer using the Microsoft ASP.NET platform for their web projects. Key changes in the new version include the availability of several quick-start solutions for typical website categories. Additionally, there has been significant improvement in performance and ORM modules.
Bitrix Site Manager ASP.NET 5.5 tremendously simplifies website development by offering turnkey websites – a set of ready-to-go design and content templates for corporate, personal, and community websites that are available from inside the regular install wizard.
Like the PHP-version of BSM, site solution structures can be changed at any time, and each has variations in general design and color schemes.
Special emphasis is placed on social tools in the new version: blogs have been greatly improved, as well as forums, personal communications systems and the ratings features.
Under the auspices of Microsoft’s representation company in the Russian Federation, a new project, GotDotNet.Ru , has been launched on the foundation of Bitrix Site Manager ASP.NET.
