Contegro v4 Released - Introduces whole new interface and usability improvements

A translation sprint in February followed by two consecutive weeks of TikiFests and industry conferences in March present the perfect opportunity to learn more about Tiki and become more involved with the Tiki Community.

First up is TikiFest Québec from February 12-14. This event, the seventh to be held in Québec will focus on improving the French translations in Tiki. See http://tiki.org/TikiFestQuébec7 for details.
The Spring Tiki Tour then continues with TikiFest ConFoo in Montréal, Canada, March 4-8. Work is expected to focus primarily on continued integration with BigBlueButton. See http://tiki.org/TikiFestConfoo2011 for details.
ConFoo.ca immediately follows from March 9-11, also in Montréal. This is the second edition of the ))ConFoo(( conference and includes experts in Java, .Net, PHP, Python and Ruby will present solutions for developers and project managers. Tiki Community member Marc Laporte will be speaking about Tiki Suite: Tiki's integration with other open source applications, such as BigBlueButton, Kaltura, Clipperz, and many others.
The tour then heads across the border to participate in Recent Changes Camp 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts. This Open Space Technology format unconference focuses on wikis and collaborative practices and runs March 11-13. Several key Tiki Community members plan to attend the event.
TikiFest Boston, March 14-18, marks the end of this Spring tour. This will be the last major gathering before the release of Tiki 7 (planned for April 2011). Work will primarily entail release preparations, but the TikiFesters will also look at long-term work including the move to Smarty 3 and major rework and improvements to Tiki Trackers. The Cross-border Spring Tiki Tour

A new release of mojoPortal has been made available. From the release announcement:
This is a minor release with just a few bug fixes, the primary purpose of this release is to fix a problem in our Shared Files feature and in our alternate File Manager when running under Medium Trust hosting. In the previous release of version 2.3.6.1 we had changed to strong name signed assemblies for NeatUpload and for the NeatUpload Greybox Progress bar.
This strong signed version of NeatUpload allows it to be installed in the GAC (Global Assembly Cache) on the server so it can work in Medium Trust, but there was a bug in the previous release because the NeatUpload.GreyboxProgressBar.dll was not compiled with the AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers attribute so it caused an error under Medium Trust. This release addresses that problem, it just required adding the needed attribute and re-compiling the NeatUpload.GreyboxProgressBar.dll. Since most shared hosting uses Medium Trust we felt it important to get a fix out for this quickly.

Asbru Web Content Management v7.3.4 released

A new release of WordPress became available last night. WordPress 3.0.5 has been made available to the public.
The release addresses a number of issues and provides two additional enhancements:
<ul>
<li>Two moderate security issues were fixed that could have allowed a Contributor- or Author-level user to gain further access to the site.</li>
<li>One information disclosure issue was addressed that could have allowed an Author-level user to view contents of posts they should not be able to see, such as draft or private posts.</li>
<li>Two security enhancements were added. One improved the security of any plugins which were not properly leveraging our security API. The other offers additional defense in depth against a vulnerability that was fixed in previous release.</li>

WordPress 3.0.5 released

Web Content Management vendor, Bitrix has reported rapid growth in 2010 with a number of key accomplishents. Some of their highlights from 2010 include:

<li> Gross licensing figures grew 42% over the previous year. But the important finding is that Bitrix Site Manager experienced growth of 28%, while Bitrix Intranet figures were up 63%, clearly demonstrating the increasing pace in the social collaboration market development.</li>
<li>The registered number of Bitrix product installations has passed 50,000, while Bitrix Site Manager was rated the world’s #3 most popular CMS by W3Techs.</li>
<li>The key customer wins include Condé Nast, Rosno Insurance, AXA Insurance, Vienna Insurance Group, Russian Parliament, Brown&amp;Brown, Campbells, and the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games.</li>
<li>The Bitrix partner network expanded to a total of nearly 6,000 certified partners worldwide being the largest network in the CMS market. The company introduced a number of channel initiatives to support partner development including the Leads Forwarding Program and the Marketing Cooperative Program.</li>
<li>Bitrix introduced six major releases of its flagship products and sixteen industry solutions.</li>
<li>Bitrix Site Manager and Bitrix Intranet have undergone a number of important improvements that address end-users’ and web developers’ core needs. Search Engine Optimization with Magnolia CMS

The development team at SilverStripe have two new releases to announce. Released on the 1st of this month, versions 2.4.5 and 2.3.11 promise to include a number of fixes to the popular content management system.
<h3>Fixes in 2.4.5</h3>
<ul>
<li>Fixed issue in CMS where rolling back to an earlier revision of a page would produce an error (fixed in 2.3.11 as well).</li>
<li>Fixed issue where posting a page comment could post to the wrong page.</li>
<li>Fixed issue where documents and images with uppercase extensions were not accessible.</li>
<li>Fixed issue with “RandomGenerator” causing an error with some restrictive shared hosting environments.</li>

Two new releases from the SilverStripe team

SourceForge.net has been recovering from an attack which they discovered on Wednesday of last week. The attack consisted of a root privilege escalation on one of their platforms which permitted exposure of credentials that were then used to access machines with externally-facing SSH.
As a result of the attack and to prevent further damage, the SourceForge team locked down some of the impacted hosts which in turn, resulted in service downtime for:

<li>CVS Hosting</li>
<li>ViewVC</li>
<li>New Release upload capability</li>
<li>ProjectWeb/shell</li>
</ul>
As part of the recovery process, they have begun to to data validation as outlined below:

It’s better to be safe than sorry, so we’ve decided to perform a comprehensive validation of project data from file releases, to SCM commits. We will compare data agains pre-attack backups, and will identify changed and added. We will review that data, and will will also refer anything suspicious to individual project teams for further assessment as needed.
The validation work is a precaution, because while we don’t have evidence of any data tampering, we’d much prefer to burn a bunch of CPU cycles verifying everything than to discover later that some extra special trickery lead to some undetected badness

Convio Acquires Analytics and Data Intelligence Firm StrategicOne

1024cms – CVI development team has announced the release of beta version 1.1 stable of the 1024cms. The new version includes only admin backend and better performance, improved Search Engine Optimization tools and support for the html editor and FCKeditor WYSIWYG text editors.
1024cms is a powerful Open Source Content Management System (CMS) written in PHP and is suitable for many types of website development.
1024cms is designed to run on a Linux web server, running Apache, PHP and SQL. Other platforms and databases (eg Oracle) are also supported but not tested and you can do the test your self and share with our community.
We spent a lot of time evaluating the admin interface from the user's perspective and making improvements as necessary. We also did very rigorous testing on this version. We think this version is the most mature and easy-to-use version.

Brand new 1024CMS release

We were recently contacted by FamousWhy.com to review their content management system script, Famous Questions CMS. Famous Questions is an option for those looking to create a site similar in concept to that of Yahoo! Answers for instance.
Some ideas for use may include: being used as a niche social network website for a specific country, business category, profession or job such as : Ask a Doctor, Ask a Lawyer, Ask a Teacher or Ask an Expert for a general community-driven Q&amp;A site.

As you can see, the software has been designed to encourage communication either through question / answer style or debate style. The options for both are available and can be used concurrently.

Should you wish to edit the questions, you are given a popup window where you can modify the text, category and topic.

The debates system is an interesting setup. You create a statement or topic for debate, categorize it and publish. Your topic is then shown with a YES or NO button (see below). Clicking on either casts a vote for that choice and gives you an opportunity to state your case. The system works as intended but there are issues such as misspellings in the code which makes the CMS appear less than professional:

Everything works as expected on this tab. Next is the Buzz tab which is used for maintenance tasks. I'm not sure why the developers chose to call it Buzz and not maintenance as it's not particularly clear from the onset what this tab is for until you actually visit it. Personally, I would reword this to make it's purpose more clear.

Unfortunately, when clicking through the various options on this tab, there is no status shown as to what was actually done. The script just shows a simple message (shown below) that is, once again, misspelled:

Lastly we come to the settings tab:

The settings tab is well put together with the option to quickly replace the site logo and favicon as well as enter Facebook API credentials (for integration into the CMS). One is given the ability to manage the basic typical tasks you would expect to find and in the Banner section there is space to add your applicable advertisement code.

The Banner area appears to have been created strictly for Google Adsense or similar products and does not provide an area or means to add your own banner images.  Under the SEO settings, you are able to edit meta descriptions and keywords for each module and page:

<h3>My final thoughts:</h3>
While the system works as intended and provides a good alternative for users who are looking to have their own forum for people to debate or pose questions to one another,  there are small quirks that need to be corrected in order to give this product a more professional feel. Unfortunately, misspellings and poor naming conventions do not give the end user a feeling of security or confidence in the quality of the code. If the developers are not able to catch misspelled words, it lends one to wonder whether they rushed to write the code as well, making mistakes along the way there too.
This is not to say that this is the case in this product, but rather that this is the impression that some users will get when seeing these mistakes. Should they be corrected and the naming conventions be changed to more accurately reflect their purposes, this product will be more likely to be successful.
As with all products, however, there is always room to improve and I am confident that the team at FamousWhy.com will make the necessary corrections with the next release.
