Acquia, the commercial Drupal venture started by Drupal founder, Dries Buytaert, has raised an additional $15 million in series D funding. According to a recent post by Dries on his <a href="http://buytaert.net/acquia-raises-15-million-series-d">personal blog</a>,

Today marks the official release of Joomla! 1.7. One of the world's most popular open source content management systems, Joomla! has continued to <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/joomlas-growth-continues-unabated-with-record-numbers/">grow in popularity</a> since first branching from Mambo many years ago.
One of the most common criticisms people make when speaking about Joomla! are jabs at its security model, which some consider weak. In all fairness to the Joomla! developers, I think that when you are as popular and widely used as Joomla!, you're going to be prone to more attempts to hack than say, a less popular CMS. In response to some of these concerns, there has been a lot of focus on security improvements within the CMS of late and this release is no exception to the rule.
That, however, is not all this new release brings. There are a number of exciting new additions. Key updates in the new version include pre-defined search options, a new defense against form manipulation, language specific font settings and more. In addition, the entire Joomla open source community overhauled the development lifecycle for its CMS to make future release dates more predictable, and enabled users to more easily contribute content and migrate to the latest version.

Some of the main enhancements to this version include:

<li>One Click Version Updating – Update a site to the latest stable Joomla release with just a click. The new built-in updater also handles updates for Joomla and Joomla extensions. This is a major enhancement improving upon the previous system of manually updating individual files on the server.</li>
<li>Six-Month Release Cycle – A shorter development cycle that will enhance Joomla’s stability by providing more core feature development and adoption. Short-term releases will be in active development for six months, then reach the end-of-life one month after the next version’s release. Long-term support will be active for 15 months, starting with Joomla version 1.8. Version 1.7 will have a support cycle of seven months.</li>
<li>Joomla Platform Split – The platform (the libraries folder) will now be split from the actual CMS, allowing the Joomla platform to be enhanced outside of Joomla and used for other types of development projects. This will also allow the user community to be more strongly aligned with particular development groups, which will result in more effective and quality development.</li>

The development of 1.7 is a true collaboration by thousands of Joomla developers and millions of everyday users that have downloaded the CMS to date since the Joomla community does not rely on contributions from large software development companies. This includes feedback gathered from more than 2.3 million Joomla forum posts, 490,000 Joomla forum members and data from more than 7,900 Joomla extensions. Since 2007, Joomla has been downloaded more than 24 million times, making it by far, the most popular and downloaded open source website software in the world today.

As the public sector begins to get to grips with the transformation of services to online delivery, it is more important than ever that councils and local authority departments select the right supplier to support their Web Channel Strategy.
It is well recognised that there is a plethora of web content management (WCM) systems in the marketplace. Many are feature rich solutions offering the tools required to develop and manage successful websites. Out of the box core solutions are widely available that deliver websites with Web 2.0 functionality in conjunction with a range of features that have become standard requirements for most Local Authorities all underpinned by varying degrees of support and maintenance. Some will offer, hosting, additional modules and other such tools – it is a familiar landscape to many Local Authority IT and Web Managers; as one recently commented ‘they are all about the same'. Making the difference
The demands on Councils require a more complete service from web partner suppliers than simple solution provision.  Ask yourself the questions, is my WCMS supplier helping me to get the very best from my chosen solution? Are they genuinely focused on assisting me to achieve channel shift to meet my strategic objectives?  Are they working with me for the long-term?
In everyday life we strive to get the best value from the suppliers we work with, sometimes there is value in going to the same supplier, but in other instances staying with one supplier may keep our view narrow minded and is influenced by the product's capability. It is therefore imperative to consider the long term plan of what your web channel strategy is trying to achieve and if the aspirations of the partner fits with your requirements.
Through evaluation of what your current partners provide you can make judgements on whether they are suitable to help you deliver that change. This may lead to the realisation that strategic change throughout the organisation is required, and that corporate buy in is holding back the website rather than the technology itself. However, by looking to different suppliers for different aspects of your website will ensure you have a comprehensive review of your website and new ideas may unfold. A supplier who is in tune with your needs and requirement will work with you to optimise your website, delivering effective user journeys and maximising long term transaction fulfillment.
The importance of realising your objectives makes it crucial not to be held back by a web partner who is not focused on them. Don't be afraid to go elsewhere to obtain the expertise you need to make your website as effective as it should be and to deliver the savings you need.

Yfactor Releases iCMS 8.0 with Mobility and Accessibility Features

Three hot topics right now on the web are content management systems, the cloud and shopping cart software. New products are being released every week offering an increasing level of choice and a number of companies are doing well to establish themselves in these distinct areas.
As exciting as all of this is, when it comes to actually building a site these choices can start to become more of a problem than a solution. By the time a site is up and running you are likely to a using a combination of installed CMS software, a shopping cart system, a third party payment processor and in some cases additional functionality left out of the CMS such as HTML mailing systems.
Thankfully a new system, INZU, can do away with all of that and provide a comprehensive solution that meets the needs of most small/medium businesses and organisations. Going one step further, INZU is cloud based meaning there is no learning of a CMS templating language required. Data is instead accessed through a user friendly API that makes the code on your site understandable to any developer, not just those familiar with a particular CMS.
INZU was first established as a payment provider for digital downloads nearly four years ago when there was little competition in this area but since then the system has steadily grown to incorporate new features on a regular basis. In late 2008 the first attempts at creating a cloud system were introduced with product information for downloads and by at that time mail orders being available through a very basic API.
With the success of this it was clear that for INZU customers managing their shop on their own site via the admin area on inzu.net was not only a great success but could easily include other sections of their site. Through discussion with a number of selected users in 2009 work began on a fully-fledged CMS system that sought to achieve that goal.
Beta testing of the system was completed in 2010 and this year has seen the introduction of the CMS to a wider audience as well as the addition of some powerful new features.
The idea of CMS in the cloud is relatively new but offers some genuine advantages over installed systems such as:

<li>No installation, saving time and money</li>
<li>No updating required</li>
<li>No extra programmatic/templating tier, everything is accessed via XML/JSON data feeds giving total freedom in site architecture and design</li>
<li>Multiple access point for data, so you may have multiple websites and mobile apps all up-dateable from the same CMS</li>
<li>Totally unobtrusive, meaning it works very well alongside bespoke CMS systems/elements or even other installed system</li>
<li>Tiny site footprint, usually between 1-5MB means only very cheap hosting is required for the user's site</li>
</ul>
To understand the architecture a bit more clearly the CMS admin suite is accessed on inzu.net by logging into a user account. Here updates are made and new products added. For sections such as galleries and events images are hosted on INZU servers. The user then creates a site template on their own domain which accesses the data via the INZU API using whatever server side language they like e.g PHP or ASP.
Thankfully an entire site template (built in PHP) that covers all the sections of the CMS and how to connect to the API is available for free and a dedicated developers site fully documents how to access the API. You can even test out the example site without registering as it is set up to access example data from INZU.
Although the CMS and API is laid out for a typical site with sections you'd expect to see such as home, contact news etc what you can achieve with the system goes way beyond that. A handful of clever extra features make for a very flexible system with all the power of other installed CMS packages, these are;

<li>SQL style calls</li>
<li>Tagging of entries</li>
<li>Versatile articles section</li>
</ul>
The API allows for a range of SQL style parameters to pass to each call so you may for instance select a certain news entry, the second page of news entries, change the ordering type or select by a certain tag.
This comes neatly onto the second point. Tagging each entry allows you to create sections within sections, so by tagging entries as you upload you can define which section it belongs to for example you may wish to have one gallery for people and one for events. Tagging may also be used to group other section types together so you could display the first three entries of news and galleries for the tag “what we're up to” and have both those feeds display on the same page.
Mixing and matching feeds or elements of feeds on the same page is very straightforward and no different to how you would normally access different database tables.
As well as the more structured section types like news and galleries, the articles section is built to allow the publishing of general HTML pages and so is great for articles or blogs. With the ability to create sections within the articles section (without using tags) there is really no limit to the variety of pages on your site.
What this amounts to is a very clean easy-to-use CMS from both the user's and the developers side. Developers get to mash up the the API in lots of interesting ways using the language of their choice and with no worries about fitting into a templating architecture they don't like whilst the user gets a streamlined admin suite where not only do they update their site content but also manage their shop, direct payments and mailing system, all from one account.
And with the increasing importance of mobile in the world of online, it is becoming increasingly clear that your web data needs to be in more than one place at a time, with INZU that is a reality.

It's not often we see derivatives of WordPress coming to market so we decided to introduce you to this interesting project called MongoPress.

Introducing MongoPress - The High-Performance, Object Based NoSQL CMS

ImpressPages CMS 1.0.9 was put to the test for some time and now, thanks to many community members it's now ready for a stable release. From now it's even lighter, fully jQuery backed-up (no more ExtJs), a few plugins were implemented to the core together with some small bits of new nice things.
<h3>Yes to jQuery, No to ExtJs</h3>
ImpressPages CMS 1.0.9 no longer depends on ExtJs library. It was thrown away completely. From now ImpressPages CMS is ~5 Mb and ~600 files smaller when installed.
In this version we focused on menu management. Till now Menu management was made on ExtJs library and iframe communication. It is based on jQuery and AJAX now. About 6000 new lines of code were written.
<h3>Copy and paste easily</h3>
Due to high usage and a number of requests the functionality of “Copy content” plugin was integrated to the core of the system. Therefore, “Copy content” plugin is not required anymore.
<h3>Share the data between websites</h3>
