Joomla! 1.6 Available Now – Download the World’s Leading Open Source Content Management System and Easily Build Websites and Online Applications

In a market that sometimes seems to be over-saturated with vendors vying for your dollar, it's always interesting to see how the various vendors are changing to stay competitive.  cmScribe has been around for a number of years but has recently “pulled the current software apart and rebuilt it on the latest versions of .NET and Ajax to specifically address web developers' workflow and UI expectations.”
I was offered an opportunity recently to take a look at the new product and here are my thoughts.
cmScribe is a SaaS-based content management system with what I would consider a very reasonable price point. Currently, their product is not available for commercial purchase but the tentative numbers are as follows:

There are quite a few options in the SaaS arena but not very many of them are priced as competitively as this one, in my opinion. I'm eager to see how widely adopted the system becomes once it's officially released.
Please keep in mind that this review is based on an existing beta and, as such, there may be bugs or glitches that I identify. These may not necessarily still be present in the final product.
I was given a demo site to use for this review that was pre-populated with data. Once I logged in with the designer role, I was presented with the following screen:

You can see in the picture above that in the top left beside the logo for cmScribe there are three icons that look like this:

These are used to enter the various modes of page display. For instance, the left being edit mode, then manage mode, and finally, live mode. The screenshot above shows edit mode. Clicking on any of the available green edit buttons brings up a simple ckEditor window for quick editing of content:

Editing the content is pretty straight forward and I experienced no issues using the editor. cmScribe uses Ajax to load the various options and I found load time to be very quick. There is also the ability to create a new page which is equally as quick.
The next mode, manage mode.
Once active, the toolbar at the top becomes active with the following functions.

In this mode, you have the ability to add panels to the various active areas, edit the ones that have something to change, manage the styles and edit the template. One of the things that might potentially confuse new users are the icons on the various areas. For instance, the move icon on the left (pictured below) led me to believe I had the ability to drag and drop the basic content within the various active regions.

This isn't the case, however. You have to actually click on the icon to get the option to move it. This obviously isn't a major issue but could certainly lead to confusion for new users. Hovering over this icon should probably present an info pop-up advising users how to use it, currently, it states that you use it to move the panel but it doesn't make it obvious that you need to click on it.
Clicking on Page Settings on the top bar gives a variety of options to configure on a per page basis:

The majority of the options and their respective pages are pretty straightforward to I won't focus too much on the obvious ones other than to say they load fast, work as intended and are easy to understand.
One of the options I found the most interesting is the Content Prototypes option. Clicking this one presents a page such as this:

This is a very easy to use way to build content templates which I found exceptionally well put together. Adding the various elements works with drag and drop and clicking on the names (when in blue) presents individual settings for said option. Example:

I have to say, this is one of the best setups I've seen for constructing content templates and it was pleasing and easy to use. I think cmScribe took one of the greatest frustrations new users have and made it simple.  I'm duly impressed.
That's it for Manage mode.
Live mode is simply a preview of how the site looks once you've completed your edits.

<h3>Conclusion</h3>
cmScribe has put together an excellently valued SaaS based CMS here. They've taken the most difficult portions of web development and made them as easy as possible and they have done so successfully.
We'll have to wait to see how the final product looks but I have no problem recommending this system to anyone looking for an easy-to-use .NET system that is SaaS based (hosted).

cmScribe Review - a slick combination of .NET and Ajax

One of the most popular content management systems of all time has a new major release available. The final version of Drupal CMS version 7.0 has been made available.
For those who are unaware, Drupal is a massively popular content management framework / system that was created by Dries Buytaert and has taken the open source CMS market by storm over the last few years. It's primary strength is it's incredibly strong user base and heavy customization capabilities.
<h3>So what's new in Drupal 7?</h3>

A new look for starters. As you can see in the picture above, Drupal 7's default look has been changed to something far more appealing (although we will miss Garland as the default, this is a welcome and much needed change).

Drupal 7 released and ready for public consumption

Some updates from the Geeklog universe:
Geeklog 1.7.1sr1 addresses an XSS in the Configuration admin panel, reported by Aung Khant of the YGN Ethical Hacker Group. Due to the built-in CSRF protection this weakness is somewhat harder to exploit but we would nonetheless advise that you secure your site by installing this update ASAP.
In addition to the <a href="http://www.geeklog.net/filemgmt/index.php/1044">complete 1.7.1sr1 tarball</a>, there are also update files <a href="http://www.geeklog.net/filemgmt/index.php/1043">for Geeklog 1.7.1</a> and <a href="http://www.geeklog.net/filemgmt/index.php/1042">for Geeklog 1.6.1sr1</a> that contain only a fixed version of the affected file (see the included README file for installation instructions).
Users of older Geeklog releases should consider upgrading to Geeklog 1.7.1sr1 soon (use the complete 1.7.1sr1 tarball to upgrade from any older version).
A note for those who are still running on PHP 4: There's a <a href="http://project.geeklog.net/tracking/view.php?id=1239">known bug</a> in the Static Pages plugin in Geeklog 1.7.1 that makes it incompatible with PHP 4. We will address this issue in <a href="http://www.geeklog.net/article.php/end-of-php4-support#releases">a future bugfix</a> update. In the meantime, consider upgrading to Geeklog 1.6.1sr2 – or upgrade to PHP 5, if possible.

Geeklog 1.7.1sr1 is now available

The fourth and (hopefully) final release candidate of Drupal 7 is now available for testing.
The Drupal team have announced a tentative release date of January 5th for final release of Drupal 7, so please get testing and make this final version the best it can be.

Drupal 7.0 RC 4 Released

Tiki Spreadsheets (a wiki-based spreadsheet solution) have undergone dramatic improvements since first being introduced in Tiki Wik CMS Groupware 1.9 in 2004. Tiki 6.1 (released December 2010) introduced a host of improvements to the feature, including:

<li>Ability to fully use Tiki's wiki syntax within sheets</li>
<li>Advanced math functions</li>
<li>Full cell and sheet formatting, including charts</li>

The first release candidate (RC1) for WordPress 3.1 is now available.
An RC comes after the beta period and before final release. There are currently no known issues or bugs to squash. But with tens of millions of users, a variety of configurations, and thousands of plugins, it’s possible something has been missed. So if you haven’t tested WordPress 3.1 yet, now is the time! Please though, not on your live site unless you’re extra adventurous.
Things to keep in mind:

<li>With nearly 700 tickets closed, there are tons of changes. Plugin and theme authors, please test your plugins and themes now, so that if there is a compatibility issue, they can figure it out before the final release.</li>
<li>Users are also encouraged to test things out. If you find problems, let your plugin/theme authors know so they can figure out the cause.</li>

WordPress 3.1 Release Candidate

It’s that time of the year when analysts, pundits, and vendors announce their bold predictions for the upcoming year. 2010 was a banner year for Web CMS, as companies realized the benefit of integrating Web CMS into critical business processes like marketing, sales, and customer support. Corporate websites took a giant leap forward, evolving from static to dynamic, and from generic to personal. The explosive growth of mobile devices in new form factors like the iPad caused CMOs to rethink their mobile strategies.
So let’s get started with my ten predictions for Web CMS in 2011:
1) WEM, the acronym, will remain vendor jargon. WEM, the concept, will transform the future of Web CMS.
WEM, or Web Engagement Management (or is it Web Experience Management?) has emerged as a potential challenger to replace CMS as the acronym that describes how companies use content to drive site visitor engagement and deliver business outcomes. Although WEM has been heavily discussed and debated among analysts and journalists, it remains a mystery to the only audience that matters- the users and buyers of Web CMS. While the capabilities described by WEM are paramount to the future of Web CMS, buyers will reject WEM the acronym but will come to expect that the existing acronyms WCM and CMS will include the capabilities of delivering and measuring site customer engagement.
2) Companies will evolve their mobile strategy beyond “mobile friendly”.
2010 was the year where mobile devices finally drove enough site traffic to compel companies to craft a mobile strategy. Yet most organizations stopped at mobile friendly, assuming the battle was over once the website and marketing campaigns rendered correctly on mobile devices. In 2011, we’ll see marketers take advantage of device capabilities and characteristics to deliver mobile experiences, not mobile friendly websites. Users are open to more immersive experiences on tablets but will look for more transactional experiences on smartphones. Mobile development will no longer be an afterthought, and innovative companies will develop for mobile first, and progressively enhance the experience based on the capabilities of the browser or device.
3) Web CMS vendors will differentiate through their decisions to build vs. integrate.
The decision to “build vs. integrate” has become a battleground for vendors trying to establish unique identities in the Web CMS space. Some vendors are focused on creating all-encompassing suites of capabilities, while others are more focused on integration with existing business applications. In 2011, vendor strategies will diverge even more strongly in this area, with vendors picking sides and aggressively committing to their strategy. For those vendors that choose to integrate, their success will be predicated on their ability to deliver deep technology integrations, not the fluffy “press release integrations” of the past.
4) Content is king. Context is queen. Together, they rule the fiefdom of web engagement.
It’s long been said the content is king, and as marketing shifts from outbound to inbound, content has evolved into a strategic corporate asset. While context is king, context is its queen. Context provides an understanding of the content consumer, and her unique set of circumstances. With context, you can match the right content, at the right moment of opportunity to encourage, support, or persuade the visitor to take action. In 2011, being able to understand the context of site visitors will transform how organizations view Web CMS and dynamic content delivery.
5) Web CMS acquisition fever will slow down, or maybe even stop.
The last five years have seen transformative acquisitions in the Web CMS vendor landscape. Oracle bought Stellent. Open Text acquired RedDot. Autonomy purchased Interwoven. Open Text bought Vignette. And most recently, Adobe acquired Day Software. In 2011, the acquisition fever will slow down as the remaining best-of-breed vendors focus on growth and differentiation in the next wave of Web CMS.
6) Multichannel publishing will drive a resurgence in structured content authoring
While newer authoring interfaces like in-context editing and drag+drop page creation have emerged as important tools for Web CMS users, the need for multichannel publishing will push users back towards more traditional, structured authoring interfaces. Publishing to multiple channels requires additional structure to ensure the right content is delivered to the right channel. Users will tag content for usage in specific channels, ranging from traditional long-form channels like the desktop web browser to short form channels like mobile devices and Twitter.
7) Platform will become less important in the Web CMS selection process
In the past, companies would have a strong preference for platform when selecting a Web CMS platform, typically Java or .NET in the enterprise. The platform requirement will become less of a decision point as the viral growth of Sharepoint created .NET expertise in even the most formidable Java strongholds like financial services and insurance. While some companies will still prefer a particular platform, it will become increasingly less important in 2011. Buyers will pick the products that best fit their business and technical requirements, regardless of platform.
8) Enterprise search is sexy again
Search and Web CMS have always enjoyed a symbiotic relationship, and the relationship will grow deeper in 2011. Enterprise search platforms provided by vendors like Microsoft, Endeca, and Autonomy do far more than just keyword searches. They power mission critical business processes like commerce and customer support, and play a significant role in the overall customer experience of a website. Search is an important part of a customer engagement strategy, and Web CMS vendors will use enterprise search platforms to provide new sets of capabilities focused on engagement and experience.
9) Social media will permeate the corporate website
The website of the future will be a seamless blend of corporate generated and user generated content. Social is no longer just a disconnected feature of a website, it's a fundamental shift in how companies embrace customer relationships, transparency, and authenticity. In 2011, we’ll finally start to see companies and brands adopt the principals outlined by Jeremiah Owyang in his 2007 blog how on How to Evolve Your Irrelevant Corporate Website (http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2007/05/29/web-strategy-how-to-evolve-your-irrelevant-corporate-website/).
10) Developers. Developers. Developers.
Web CMS vendors have spent the last few years catering to marketing departments and business users, addressing usability and innovating new ways to use Web CMS to run marketing campaigns. Web CMS vendors will place the same emphasis on transforming the developer experience, providing better tools, APIs, code samples, documentation, and more.
So those are my predictions for 2011. 2010 was a great year for Web CMS, and I think we’ll look back and identify 2010 as an inflection point in the market, driven by both the emergence of web engagement and the growth of new channels like mobile and social media. 10 Predictions for Web CMS in 2011

Hannon Hill Corporation has released the most recent version of the company's content management system for beta testing in a <a href="http://sandbox.cascadeserver.com/login.act" target="_blank">sandbox</a> as well as for <a href="http://www.hannonhill.com/downloads/cascade/index.html" target="_blank">download</a>. The Cascade Server 6.8 Beta introduces several new features a sample of which includes a Google Analytics Connector, Parallel Publishing, and a built-in Image Editor.
Google Analytics is a web analytics tool that provides marketers and website stakeholders with insights into their website traffic and marketing effectiveness. While Google Analytics is a powerful tool, there has not been an easy way for CMS contributors to access site-wide analytics data or view specific data within the context of a particular page on their site. The Cascade Server Google Analytics Connector further enhances the use of this industry-standard tool by syncing with an organization’s Google Analytics account and providing a snapshot of basic analytics data for each asset and overall Site in Cascade. Having this information readily available within the CMS empowers content contributors to make informed decisions on ways to improve their content and easily edit the content within the same interface.
Another major improvement in 6.8 is Parallel Publishing.  With this feature, content contributors across an organization are now able to publish simultaneously without encountering the publishing bottlenecks that might occur in very large organizations. Prior to this release, Cascade Server would allow only one job to publish at a time across the entire system. With the addition of this feature, each Site now has its own publish queue allowing publishers more focused control with prioritizing jobs.
Also included in Cascade Server 6.8 is a new image editor.  Contributors often need to make small image changes but must frequently consult a graphic artist to perform them. Cascade Server’s simple, built-in image editor addresses the need for quick image edits and is easier than ever to use. Contributors may also utilize the system’s powerful version control system if the image changes do not meet approval criteria. Version control allows content contributors to restore the image to its previous state, offering flexibility and peace of mind during image edits.
The Cascade Server 6.8 beta also includes support for HTML5 and several end-user enhancements. HTML5 is growing in popularity partly because it allows incorporation of rich media content like videos into website without requiring visitors to use browser plug-ins like Flash, many of which are not supported on mobile devices. The end-user enhancements include a new context-menu, which allows users to navigate around the system faster and with fewer mouse clicks. Hannon Hill Releases Cascade Server 6.8 Beta

There has been a new ExpressionEngine version released to fix some critical bugs in ExpressionEngine 2.1.2. This includes fixes for the Discussion Forum module.
Here is a full list of the changes:

<li>Added a special hidden fieldtype to allow modules to dynamically define tab fields without breaking layouts.</li>
<li>Pages Module Updated to version 2.2 to fix an error with publish page layouts.</li>
<li>Fixed a bug where a PHP error could be triggered if the publish_form_entry_data hook was used.</li>
<li>Fixed a bug (#14792) where the Forum version was incorrectly identified.</li>
<li>Fixed a bug (#14723) where category and status dropdowns on the Edit page were not populated in Internet Explorer.</li>
<li>Fixed a bug (#14786) on the Publish page where field formatting options would not show nor would they respect default settings.</li>
<li>Fixed a bug (#14794) where publishing an entry with a live view template resulted in a PHP error.</li>
<li>Fixed a bug (#14785) where you could not successfully save an entry with a required image field.</li>
<li>Documentation: Updated to use __construct in development examples; fixes #14787.</li>
<li>Documentation: Developer Guidelines Checklist still referenced PHP 4.3; fixes #14789.</li>

New ExpressionEngine security update released

APICMS is a CMS which provides for the integration of content within a website only a RESTful API for the web designer. You can program your own website completely independent of the CMS as usual with HTML / CSS and then bind the content with a few lines of PHP code in exactly the area in which you want to give your customers the option to change text and graphics.

The latest version of Drupal 6 has been made available. From the release announcement:
