What I Mean to Say: A Practitioner Perspective on AI, Semantics, and Content Evolution

ReciteCMS is a system that was designed for web developers that need a tool that provides numerous options and functions to make managing their client's content easier. Before we dive in and take a look at what this system has to offer, here's an overview of the system from the ReciteCMS website.

<li>Recite is a web-based Content Management System. Build and update your website using your web browser. Create pages, upload files, manage your site's look and feel using the Recite CMS Control Panel.</li>
<li>One installation, many sites. The Recite CMS administration system lets you add new websites. Your installation can manage any number of websites, and any number of users can log in to the Control Panel to manage each site.</li>
<li>Simple to install and upgrade. Recite CMS is simple to install and upgrade. The administration tools will notify you when updates are available, as well as downloading and installing updates when you choose.</li>
<li>Manage files and templates using your own editor. Recite CMS supports WebDAV, meaning you can update your CSS files and website templates using your favourite text editor.</li>
<li>Extensive documentation. The Recite CMS Documentation Portal contains documentation for users, administrators and developers. You can distribute the Control Panel User Guide to your clients or to people in your organization that will be using the Control Panel.</li>
<li>PHP developers can extend Recite CMS. Recite CMS is built upon PHP 5.2 and the Zend Framework. Developers can write custom add-ons for Recite CMS (such as custom form types) using our well-documented APIs. Developer documentation is available from the documentation portal.</li>

There are a couple of options with ReciteCMS – Hosted and Downloaded editions. Hosted plans start at about $5 per month and contain everything you need to get started while downloaded editions require you to setup the system on your own hosting provider.
Today, we'll take a look at the hosted edition of ReciteCMS.
After signing up for the hosting account, we're given the url's to access our new website (prior to assigning our own domain to the account).

Initially, you are given a fairly attractive interface with which you can modify to suit your needs. There is an integrated Twitter widget, Blog and Contact form to give you a starting point.
Logging in to the back end is where things can get a bit confusing if you are not a developer or have not gone through their video tutorials before attempting to tackle the system.
As a caveat, however, the ReciteCMS team have never claimed that the system is designed to be used by the average user, but has been geared heavily towards web developers and web development firms. If, however, you are willing to read the documentation and explore their extensive product tours on their website, you may find yourself with a very powerful system in your hands once you become familiarized with it's use.

We were initially a bit confused as to how to add a blog post being that we dove in cold so we reached out to the ReciteCMS team and here is their response:
Our target platform has primarily been web development firms that deal day-to-day with setting this stuff. We're trying to streamline as much as possible to make it possible for anybody to install.
Likewise there's a bit of a learning curve for people coming in cold to Recite (we often provide in-office training for new users). Again, stuff we're trying to improve.
As far as creating a blog post: Recite contains “calendar event” management (click on “Calendar” tab). You can create custom event types, as well as multiple calendars, then you can create events (call them blog posts or whatever you will) within calendars.

It's always nice when the developers are able to acknowledge and provide quick responses to queries so they definitely get bonus points for having excellent customer service. To their credit, the videos and documentation are quite complete and provide an easy to understand grasp of the system.
Even with their advise, we were still unable to ascertain where to go and what to do to get started with blogging and based on that experience, we have to strongly recommend that anyone interested in using the system read carefully through the documentation first.
I think the ReciteCMS have a good starting point but there is a lot of work that needs to be done before this product can go mainstream. As a developer myself, I found the system far too complex and confusing to be able to use and while I understand the need to “read the manual”, I normally do not have to take this plunge in order to quickly grasp the basics of a CMS.
On a positive note, the developers of Recite are aware of the issues and were interested in our feedback so they could improve the system and make it more user friendly so I recommend keeping an eye on this one to see how it adapts in the coming months.

I receive a lot of questions from people who are looking for an easier way to manage their existing web pages and are interested in adding them to a CMS. Some of the main reasons for wanting to do this are:
Rest assured there are many solutions on the market that can help you accomplish this goal. Today, we're going to take the time to introduce you to some of these solutions.
There are numerous systems that are available for the integration of existing websites that were designed before CMS' started to become more and more popular. The second most common question we've been getting a lot of lately has gone a little something like this:
I need a system that makes it easy for me, as a non-designer, to really come up with something special and unique for my website. I want to be able to do this myself or with very little training. I would also like something that takes care of the whole SEO thing for me and last but not least, I want it hosted (SaaS – Software as a service).
Fortunately, there are plenty of solutions out there that fit this bill. Unfortunately, they aren't always obvious to people, so let's make a list shall we?
In order of my personal preference:

<li>Squarespace – recommended by many an SEO expert, Squarespace has probably one of the nicest and most feature-rich platforms for designing a website, period. It contends with some of the more prominent CMS platforms that cost far more and it has built-in (and nice) analytics. <li>Gutensite – Gutensite, like Squarespace, takes the complication out of setting up a CMS. It's a beautiful system with a ton of power. Its only fault is that there is so much you can do that it can get a little bit overwhelming. This, however, also makes it quite powerful and because we love you so much, we reviewed it to: <a href="/meet-gutensite-a-platform-for-creating-beautiful-and-powerful-business-websites/">Gutensite Review</a>.</li>
<li>LightCMS – LightCMS has slightly fewer options than the above two but wins big points for customer service. They have an amazing response time and a system that is not at all overwhelmed with features. It's easy to use, cost-efficient, and generally pretty. CMS Critic Recommends... - July Edition

Prague, 8 July 2010 – Campsite, the free, open source, multilingual content management system for news websites has been released in version 3.4 and features over fifty bug fixes and improvements. Building upon the stability and security improvements in June's 3.3.6 release, this latest version includes dramatically improved search options (both internally and for external search engines), a clean up of the graphical interface (new-look icons and admin interface) and easier installation. Campsite is a flagship open-source software package developed by Sourcefabric, one of the largest European open source projects for news and media.
“With this release, Campsite can be installed on almost any hosting service,” said Micz Flor, one of Sourcefabric's founding partners. “It now supports installations in sub folders and the internal cron scheduler and time zone management make it independent from hosting restrictions. To round this up: backup and restore can be managed through the admin interface. These improvements make our enterprise publishing software available even to low-cost web hosting.”
Specific highlights from this release include:
– Supernavigation and backend search – new navigation system on backend home page, including full text search
– Search engine optimization – option to add the combination of texts from article title, keywords, topics, etc. into url.
– Time zone handling – option to set custom timezone instead of server's.
– Backup/restore admin GUI – manage backup and restore process via administration interface.
– Installation supports subfolder. user can install campsite not only in the root folder but any subfolder (e.g. http://localhost/campsite/).
– New iconography for the admin interface, part of the UI re-design. Art work by Vladimir Stefanovic.
– Add customizable error page for not-found URLs
– Incorporate Embed Media TinyMCE plugin
– Now compatible with the newer, stricter MySQL version

Summer brings Campsite 3.4 release

FancyCMS team has recently released a desktop flash CMS application called FancyPlus, that is available for free download at their website. It is an offline flash template editor with built in FTP publisher.

We've been using <a href="http://www.wordpress.org">WordPress</a> on and off here at CMS Critic for the last few years. On a couple of occassions, we've gone to great lengths to switch to other platforms to counter the various frustrations we've experience with WP.
Some of those frustrations included:
<ul>
<li>Having to update plugins individually. (pain when you have a large number of them).</li>
<li>Issues with WP Dashboard not responding as well as it should with browsers other than internet explorer.</li>
<li>Speed issues (yes, with a number of plugins, it started to feel sluggish)</li>
</ul>
Let me say that when I first clicked on the auto – upgrade to version 3.. I was worried that everything would break and / or I would end up with something I hated.  I'm pleased to say I am wrong.
Before I explain why, let me tell you a little side story for a moment. There is a CMS called MovableType that once contended with WordPress (I say one, because it's no longer in the same league let alone ballpark). It's 4.x series was a decent platform and was nice to work with but MT lacked community size and ease of use. Then, for some unknown reason, someone decided to try to mimick the WordPress dashboard look and feel and with that, in my opinion, they shot themselves in the foot. They now have what I believe is one of the worst admin interfaces I've seen. (some of you may still use and find MT suits your needs but imho it's a dead platform without a positive future)
The WordPress team have done the opposite. Instead of trying to redesign an already very usable dashboard into something over the top, they simply did their best to make things easier and quicker. It wasn't about adding more “stuff” but more about making the stuff that was there more usable.
Here are some of the things I've noticed so far:
<ul>
<li>The Ajax back-end seems to not be so jumpy and skittish when moving windows around in the dashboard and it likes all of the browsers I've used so far.</li>
<li>Multiple Plugin Updates! &lt;- This alone is my single most appreciated feature and god bless them for adding it.</li>
<li>Drop down menu – Nice quick access to posts and the like with a simple dropdown to speed up the process.</li>
<li>The new default theme (Twenty Ten) is very nice and usable.</li>
</ul>

The new introduction package offers TYPO3 newbies a configurable template immediately after installation. Using simple examples it demonstrates TYPO3 concepts and possibilities. At the same time this template can of course be used for the first own website, since e.g. the colour-scheme of the template can easily be changed without TYPO3 expert knowledge.
Updated Look &amp; Feel in the TYPO3 Backend
The TYPO3 Backend now has a new visual appearance with improved look &amp; feel. Additionally the entire backend CSS has been revised which also improves the overall backend loading speed. Custom backend skins can now be created much easier thanks to this restructuring.
Easier 3-Step Installation
Installing TYPO3 using the new installation script is a lot easier than before. In three easy steps TYPO3 is up and running and users can even change to their preferred database system in the process. Clever defaults keep the user from having to make too many decisions and therefore simplifies getting started with TYPO3.
Faster Rich Text Editor
The built-in editor „HTMLarea“ is now completely based on ExtJS, the JavaScript framework that TYPO3 includes since version 4.3. It is now the first and only feature-complete Open Source Rich Text Editor (RTE) that is based entirely on ExtJS, freely available for the public and now included out-of-the-box in TYPO3 version 4.4. For the TYPO3 Backend editor this means improved loading speed of the text editor without having to give up on any of its features.
New Task Center
The new TYPO3 Task Center allows for the creation and management of tasks for all TYPO3 backend users. Additionally editors can send notes to each other and instantly find the documents they edited recently. With its completely revised interface the new Task Center fits seamlessly into the new look &amp; feel of TYPO3 version 4.4.

Typo3 version 4.4 is now available

Elxis open source CMS 2009.2 released

The incredible WordPress blog platform today sees its 3.0 final release. WordPress 3 brings a significant number of improvements including, but not limited to:

<li>new default theme: Twenty Ten</li>
<li>new APIs that allow them to easily implement custom backgrounds, headers, shortlinks, menus (no more file editing), post types, and taxonomies.</li>
<li>a long-awaited merge of MU and WordPress, creating the new multi-site functionality which makes it possible to run one blog or ten million from the same installation.</li>
<li>a lighter overall feel with contextual help on every screen.</li>
