Sourcefabric, formerly known as Campware, has made its first software release since the restructuring and renaming of the organisation, which started over a decade ago as the digital media department of the Media Development Loan Fund. The new Campsite 3.3.6 release sees over twenty-five improvements, new features and bug fixes that focus on increased stability and security for users.

Let's face it, there are plenty of blog platforms out there to choose from when you get that sudden urge to share your thoughts and feelings (or just opinions like us) with the rest of the world. There's WordPress, Typepad, Movable Type, LifeType, OpenBlog, Blogger and many more.. but what makes WordPress such a Goliath to these other Davids?
Let's start with the basics..
<h3>It's got ease of use.</h3>
I know, I know, this is the part where everyone jumps in to tell me that all of the other platforms I've mentioned above are easy too.. and that may be the case.. but they aren't famous for it.<a href="http://www.wordpress.org"> WordPress</a> has ALWAYS been easy.. it's a fast install, it's got a small file size and most of the time it just works.
Let me put it this way, WordPress is the car you can typically rely on to start no matter the weather.. and should you stray and try another car because it seems like it may have better features and you decide to come back, it'll start right up again without a seconds delay. Trust me, I know.. I've tried a lot of them.
Ok, so it's easy you say.. what else does it have going for it? How about this one.
<h3>It's got community.</h3>
WordPress has easily one of the most diverse and largest communities in the CMS world let alone the blogging world. Still not sure? Check out <a href="http://central.wordcamp.org/">WordCamp Central</a>. We aren't just talking major cities of the world either, there are WordCamp's in places I've never even heard of until I heard there was a WordCamp happening there. Take WordCamp Fukuoka for example (I know, I'm not well travelled).
WordCamp's aren't the only example of community, however. There are tons of forums and bloggers all over the net that make helping others with WordPress or spreading the word their goals. Can you say, Free Advertising?
Nothing beats word of mouth right?
<h3>It's got Matt.</h3>
I've been bit by this one before but I still stand by my belief that projects, just like companies, need a leader. They need someone that can act as the focal point to give them substance. People want to be able to put a face to the products they use and <a href="http://ma.tt">Matt</a> does just that. He makes himself known, he shows up at WordCamp's.. he lives and breathes his product. And he's damn good at it too.
I really would love examples of where this has been done better because I really don't think it has. WordPress and Matt are synonymous with one another and it makes for good reading.. and the press eat it up.
<h3>It's got stuff.</h3>
Stuff. It's a broad word isn't it?
Let's face it.. WordPress is currently riding high with the most plugins and themes of (dare i say it?) any other CMS project out there.
Take a look at their plugin registry for an example: 9,674 plugins.
And themes? Don't even ask.. there are way too many to count.
So how do other projects get a chance to enjoy similar successes that WordPress has achieved?  That's a question that remains to be answered?

Thanks to the integrated Send&amp;Save™ technology, organizations can solve a major headache associated with the fact that email remains the main business communication tool. SilverStripe 2.4 has been released and this release comes with a ton of new changes, highlighted below.
<h3>Hierarchical URLs</h3>
If your website contains a large number of pages, you may find SilverStripe's default way of handling URLs a little limiting. Until now, URLs could only be one level deep, for example:
<pre>http://website.com/new-york-staff-john-smith</pre>
With hierarchical URLs, the address for such a page might be:
<pre>http://website.com/offices/new-york/staff/john-smith</pre>
One of the principles of this feature is that it provides a logical “bread crumb” for a page. Each URL segment (as separated by a slash) is a page in itself that can be visited. Hierarchical URLs also reduce the problem of “running out” of URLs, where you might be forced to have URLs like http://website.com/staff-2.
SilverStripe 2.4 allows you to run the website in either simple or hierarchical URL mode.

<h3>Microsoft SQL Server database support</h3>
We have seen strong demand for SilverStripe to run on the Microsoft platform—in recent months there have been tens of thousands of downloads via the Microsoft.com web application gallery alone. We have therefore worked hard to allow SilverStripe to natively run on a SQL Server 2008 database, eliminating the requirement to run SilverStripe on MySQL (though, of course, it still runs great on MySQL). We're really happy with the results, and we have government websites like www.gw.govt.nz already running on this platform.
Running SilverStripe on SQL Server requires the installation of the SilverStripe SQL Server module.
<h3>PostgreSQL database support</h3>
SilverStripe 2.4 can also run on a PostgreSQL 8.3 or later database. We are continuosly testing this feature; however, our testing has not been as extensive as it has been for Microsoft SQL Server. We'd love for you to install SilverStripe 2.4 with the PostgreSQL Database Support module and let us know how it goes.
<h3>Performance and memory use optimisations</h3>
Memory use optimisations mean that the CMS backend interface for the “Site Content” section easily scales to well over 10,000 pages. Changes include:
<ul>
<li>Performance improvements around Object and ViewableData property access.</li>
<li>Improved unit test execution speed.</li>
<li>Decreased memory usage in “Files &amp; Images” section.</li>
<li>Ability to cache parts of templates, providing a middle ground between the speed of fully cached pages and the richness of fully dynamic database-driven pages.</li>
<li>Batch action handling handles larger tree structures, provides better visual feedback, and respects permissions on individual pages.</li>
<li>Tests that SilverStripe is compatible with Microsoft's new WinCache PHP bytecode cache. Anecdotal tests show that WinCache provides a 50% speed improvement in generating SilverStripe webpages.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Introducing roles</h3>
SilverStripe has long had support for setting granular security permissions on pages. Users can be a member of one or more groups, and groups can be configured to have various system rights. We also allow various view and edit permissions on a page-by-page basis. This provides a great deal of flexibility, but in complex organisations the task of setting up the permission structures can mean spending a lot of time creating security groups.
With SilverStripe 2.4 we've made it easier to manage more complex security configurations with the introduction of roles. Roles allows you to create groupings of people who
<ul>
<li>Have the same system rights (e.g., access to create pages but not create users.)</li>
<li>Have those rights for different sections of a website (e.g., news section, product catalogue, corporate profile, etc.)</li>
</ul>
Roles are optional.
<h3>Other security features</h3>
<ul>
<li>A group can be limited to only edit a certain language in the CMS.</li>
<li>Team members can get permissions to see the draft version of a page in preview mode without requiring CMS access.</li>
<li>Pages of type “Virtual Page” have improved stability in regards to their permission control, translation, and publication.</li>
<li>More fine-grained permission control for translators.</li>
<li>Better XSS security of the autologin token by using HTTPOnly cookies.</li>
<li>More secure against brute force login attempts.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Other key improvements</h3>
<ul>
<li>Our new SiteConfig feature allows you to store site-wide settings including permissions and languages used on your site.</li>
<li>The CMS now searches for broken internal links to other pages and broken file references, and highlights them in the WYSIWYG editor. A report can be used to show broken links across the website.</li>
<li>Improved API to allow custom tags to be parsed within CMS content before being presented on webpages.</li>
<li>Improved reporting API to unify the CMS sidebar reports and full-page reports on their own section. It's easier to add custom filters to reports.</li>
<li>Added dropdown to choose from existing anchor links when inserting a link from the CMS sidebar.</li>
<li>Improved broken link detection.</li>
<li>Removed the jsparty/ toplevel folder, and moved all its dependencies into sapphire/thirdparty and cms/thirdparty.</li>
<li>More than 350 bugfix and enhancement commits, plus over 200 minor changes.</li>

Alfresco Software, the leader in open source enterprise content management (ECM), today announced the immediate availability of Alfresco Community Edition 3.3 for download. This release includes a range of content services for developers, including integrations with IBM Lotus Social software and a preview of an upcoming Google Docs(TM) integration. With LGPL licensing and enhancements to document and web content management (WCM) functionality, Community 3.3 is also the first ECM tool to enable developers to deliver content-rich business applications leveraging CMIS 1.0 open source standards.

Significant enhancements to Alfresco Community Edition 3.3 include:
Content Services – Providing core content management capabilities, in a free-to-distribute CMIS runtime, which allows developers to easily embed content services in their applications:

<li>CMIS 1.0 Compliance – For several years, Alfresco has taken a leading role in the development of open source standards. With the imminent approval of CMIS as an industry standard, Alfresco is the first ECM vendor to launch a fully compliant implementation of CMIS 1.0.</li>
<li>Inline Content Editing Services – In-context editing allows non-technical content authors to edit content directly from the web page. Alfresco Community 3.3 also provides a Web Editor Framework (WEF) – a JavaScript client side framework rendering a toolbar and associated controls designed to allow developers to extend any in-context functionality that may be required. The WEF also enables developers to easily create and package plug-ins and extensions for simple management and interoperability.</li>
<li>Content Repurposing – Automated content formatting functionality allows developers to build solutions to easily repurpose content for the web. Developers can use automated rules and existing FreeMarker and XSLT templates to format content for multiple delivery channels.</li>
<li>Repository Replication &amp; Web Deployment – Alfresco 3.3 builds on current rich deployment facilities with the introduction of the Transfer Service. Developers can utilize the transfer service to build solutions that transfer content between Alfresco repositories, enabling them to maintain rich content structures and relationships between Alfresco environments. This is especially useful to WCM architectures where Alfresco provides both authoring and delivery tier components.</li>

Integrations – Designed to meet the needs of developers looking for industry standard platforms that provide content services, Community 3.3 extends Alfresco support in the following key areas:

<li>IBM Lotus – Building on the ‘technology preview’ of the integration between Alfresco and IBM Lotus software products (Lotus QuickrTM, Lotus ConnectionsTM and Lotus NotesTM), this integration provides a more open platform and full-featured solution than Microsoft SharePoint(TM).</li>
<li>Google Docs – Alfresco’ s integration with Google Docs provides users with full online editing capabilities, removing the need to use office applications, such as Microsoft Office(TM) to modify or update content.  The integration will be previewed at AIIM Expo and available for download in Alfresco Community in May.</li>

Collaboration – New enhancements to Alfresco’s collaborative content management platform, Alfresco Share, include:

<li>Repository-wide content access – Alfresco Share users can now browse the document management (DM) repository as well as project or collaboration sites. New features provide users with full permission control and DM capabilities.</li>
<li>Automated Content Rules – Alfresco Share now includes a new rules and actions interface, allowing administrators to automate actions on content such as transform, move, copy, notify and many more. In addition, Alfresco 3.3 enables users to define a library of rules and link these to any space for automatic execution.</li>
<li>Collaboration Lists – Provides users with a mechanism for tracking lists of items within the context of a project. Lists can be used for multiple purposes such as tasks, issues, to-dos, and contacts and can be easily extended.</li>
<li>Google Like Search – Offers users a familiar Google-like advanced search, which allows fields to be queried alongside text searches, such as finding documents by a given author created since a given date and containing a given text.</li>

Business Friendly Open Source License – With Alfresco Community 3.3, the Alfresco repository has been moved to the LGPL license, allowing developers to embed Alfresco into their solutions without affecting their existing business model or license.
