<a href="http://www.ektron.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ektron</a> Inc. announced today the first social targeting software to integrate Facebook with corporate websites.  The new software is part of <a href="http://www.ektron.com/news/webinars/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ektron’s Marketing Optimization Suite (eMOS)</a> and makes personalization on a website as easy as building a playlist in iTunes.
“We believe that context is king when it comes to personalizing web experiences – our new software brings social targeting to everyone,” said Bill Rogers, founder and CEO of Ektron.  “We are simplifying the way companies and brands work with Facebook to connect personalized brand experiences on websites to site visitors using their Facebook profile and social graph.”
Companies like Amazon recently have integrated with Facebook in a similar way.  Ektron is bringing Amazon-like personalization to everyone.  Ektron’s software allows marketers to match social behavior in the social graph to relevant experiences on a corporate website, in a few mouse clicks so they can personalize product recommendations, offers, promotions, and other types of content to site visitors.
“Our clients always are asking for new ideas to personalize the online experience.  Ektron’s Social Targeting Software give us an extremely promising way to target content on consumer websites based on their Facebook profile and social graph,” said Jeff Geheb, Partner and Managing Director of Technology at VML.  “The concept of aggregating a user’s likes and dislikes to drive personalization was born with Facebook Connect, but Ektron’s Facebook Social Targeting Software makes it a two-way street where businesses now can directly match their relevant content to specific interested users in a powerful and easy way. This idea combines the best concepts of content management, social networking, and targeted content delivery.”
How Ektron’s Social Targeting Software Works:
<ul>
<li>Ektron provides native support for the latest release of the Facebook Platform, so companies and brands can quickly connect their websites to Facebook.</li>
<li>Facebook “Likes” allow users to express their affinity for limitless combinations of companies, brands, products, etc. Ektron social targeting matches Facebook content such as “Likes” to a personalized web experience designed by a company or brand.</li>
<li>Marketers can configure personalized experiences with drag-and-drop capabilities similar to building a playlist in iTunes that connect Facebook users’ data and/or the social graph of their Facebook Friends to business rules that the marketer defines.</li>
</ul>

Owning an Amazon Kindle just got a lot easier! We at Pligg CMS are proud to announce that we are holding another contest for developers. This time around we are asking developers to create free <a href="https://www.pligg.com/blog/926/pligg-widgets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Pligg widgets</a> to share with the community. What’s even better is that widgets are REALLY EASY to develop! How to Enter: <a href="http://forums.pligg.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&amp;f=70" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Submit your widget</a> to the <a href="http://forums.pligg.com/free-widgets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Free Widgets</a> forum. All new submissions are moderated, so your post will not appear immediately after being submitted. Your widget should appear within a few hours of submission, once a forum moderator has approved it. We reserve the right to deny widgets that do not offer any features that we consider to be useful. If your widget offers some type of meaningful functionality it will be approved, we just don’t want to see some mindless “Hello World” type widgets.
 * Adult female human hand not included.
At the time of this contest announcement, there is no set deadline for submitting your widget. We will alert everyone when we are nearing the end of the contest deadline and give developers a week long grace period to submit their work before starting the poll that determines the winners. How Winners are Chosen: Once the competition period ends, we will host a poll where users can vote on their favorite widget. The widget that receives the most votes by the time the poll closes will be announced as the winner. Prizes: The following prizes will be given out to the top 5 widget authors:
<ul>
<li>First Place – An <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002Y27P3M?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=pligg-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B002Y27P3M" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amazon Kindle</a> reader device.</li>

The Fine Print:
<ol>
<li>The developer must be the original author of the code. When using third party open source code as the basis of your work, you must properly credit that code and consider it for your own widget license.</li>
<li>The widget must use un-compiled, open source code.</li>
<li>Widget authors may choose from a number of open source licenses when submitting their widget to the forums, including:
<ul>
<li>Apache License, 2.0</li>
<li>Simplified BSD license</li>
<li>GNU General Public License (GPL)</li>
<li>GNU Library or “Lesser” General Public License (LGPL)</li>
<li>MIT license</li>
<li>Creative Commons License</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Contest winners located outside of the continental United States must provide shipping costs, unless a local supplier is able to provide the same prize at equal or lesser value.</li>
<li>Authors are limited to only receiving 1 prize, given for the highest rated widget based on poll results. If you develop the #1 and #3 widgets, you will only be given the #1 prize. The #4 widget author would then receive the 3rd place prize.</li>

Pligg CMS Widget Contest – Win an Amazon Kindle!

OmniUpdate, Inc., the leading web content management system (CMS) provider for higher education, has released version 9.3 of its web CMS, OU Campus. The release includes a Social Media Publish feature that allows authorized users to automate the publishing of content to Twitter. Publishing to other social media outlets is planned for a future release.
The new feature enables users to post or “tweet” from the CMS in conjunction with the creation or update of a web page. Updates can occur on an immediate or scheduled basis. In addition, users can link to multiple Twitter accounts or publish to only the desired accounts. OU Campus preserves a history of all tweets published from the CMS, allowing administrators to run reports of the tweets made by all users of the system.
The Social Media Publish feature comes on the heels of the OmniUpdate-sponsored research report, “Focusing Your E-Recruitment Efforts to Meet the Expectations of College-Bound Students.” The report revealed the increasingly influential role of social media on prospective college students: 33 percent of respondents have searched for schools on websites like Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, and Twitter; 74 percent stated a college or university should have a presence on these sites; and 76 percent thought schools should create their own private social networks.
Lance Merker, President and CEO of OmniUpdate, states, “The 2010 E-Expectations report came at just the right time and confirms that managing the convergence of web content and social media in higher education is more important than ever. We are excited about our Social Media Publish feature and its connection to Twitter, as it represents an exciting leap forward in our CMS capabilities and a simplification of the channel communication process for our customers.”
About OmniUpdate OmniUpdate provides higher education institutions with enterprise-class web content management system (CMS) solutions to easily and cost-effectively manage and enhance their web presence and take advantage of the latest web technologies. OmniUpdate Releases Version 9.3 of Its Web Content Management System

This month's edition of CMS Critic recommends… brings you our suggestions for the most versatile content management systems. This can mean a lot of things so let's first clarify how we have made our selections.
First, the CMS must be able to be expanded upon, must be flexible, and be used for multiple purposes.
Without further adieu, here are our recommendations for the most versatile CMS (to date):
<ol>
<li>Drupal
It's not possible to speak about versatility and expandability and not include Drupal. Drupal is perhaps one of the most flexible platforms available, both in the commercial and free marketplaces. A large part of this is due to the fact that it really is a content management framework from the get-go and can function in a myriad of manners. Some common uses of Drupal include Intranets, Project Management Platform, Publishing Platform, External facing Website management, and Social networking platform to name a few. Learn more: <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/?s=drupal+6">Drupal Review</a>, <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/drupal-founder-dries-buytaert-interview/">Drupal Founder Interview</a>, <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/tag/drupal/">Drupal News</a>
Website: <a href="http://www.drupal.org/">http://www.drupal.org/</a></li>
<li>MODx
MODx is incredibly flexible. This is especially so with their latest release, MODx Revolution, which can be used for pretty much anything and has a number of ways with which it can be expanded.MODx is effectively an application framework with a CMS built on top of it. While Drupal is also known as a framework, MODx does not have as steep a learning curve (in our opinion). Learn more: <a href="/modx-review/">MODx Review</a>, <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/tag/modx/">MODx News</a>
Website: <a href="http://www.modxcms.com/">http://www.modxcms.com/</a></li>
<li>Plone
Plone is based on Python and Zope and is another open-source CMS that offers multiple uses. Plone offers exceptional security (and a fair learning curve if you are not familiar with the Zope management interface). Learn more: <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/tag/plone/">Plone News</a>
Website: <a href="http://www.plone.org">http://www.plone.org</a></li>
<li>Concrete5
Concrete5 has been widely adopted by a number of web development firms due to its flexibility and ease of use. Amongst the competition, Concrete5 is perhaps the most user-friendly with inline editing, plenty of plugins to extend its functionality, and very good support. CMS Critic Recommends... August Edition

Webiva, an open source Ruby on Rails content management system (CMS) designed to compete with the likes of Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress, today launched a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) hosting platform. Webiva.com allows web professionals to build websites on a load-balanced, backed-up and replicated cloud without the hassle of installing and maintaining a Ruby on Rails installation.
“Webiva has been absolutely critical to the growth of our business. We reviewed dozens of platforms to adopt, and have found nothing that compares in quality to Webiva,” said Jonathan Karush, CEO of Liberty Concepts, the nation’s largest provider of campaign websites to U.S. congressional candidates. “It has powered some of the nation's most recognizable advocacy campaigns over the past two years.”
Built from the ground up with a designer’s and a developer’s needs in mind, Webiva is a web 2.0 open-source website building system (WBS) that allows web professionals to build custom websites that look and operate the way they want them to. Based on a Ruby on Rails framework from a software perspective, Webiva does its best to build on the concepts and methodologies that Rails creates. It has an extensible module system that allows additional functionality to easily be dropped into the system. Webiva offers support for forums, e-commerce, social networking other mediums needed by web professionals building top-of-the-line websites.
“Until recently there were two CMS options: a blog engine that’s user-friendly but limited, or a full-stack CMS that’s powerful, but complex to manage,” said Webiva Partner and Developer Pascal Rettig. “Webiva offers the best of both, a Rails-based system with the accessibility of a blog engine and all the features of a big CMS on the back-end.”
With 18 years of combined web development experience, Pascal and Martha Rettig are the inventive developer-designer team behind Webiva’s creation. They have been using the system for more than four years. Every feature available on Webiva was added in response to a specific requirement that arose during its use. Key benefits to web professionals using Webiva include:
<ul>
<li>Easy-to-Use – A user-friendly interface similar to a blog engine with all the features of a powerful open-source CMS</li>
<li>Non-CMS Aesthetic Appeal – Webiva is transparent from a site’s front end, giving designers full control and easy access to site HTML and CSS with built in editors.</li>
<li>Quick Click Site Creation – Build and deploy dozens of sites from a singe install- no need to FTP templates and assets.</li>
<li>Well documented, Open-source Platform – Built-on and extensible with Ruby on Rails, web professionals can use core modules (including e-commerce, social networking, forums, etc.) or write their own.</li>
</ul>

What's ahead for Open Source CMS?

#ffffff

Now in its fifth year, the Award has been adapted from the established Open Source CMS Award with the wider aim of encouraging, supporting, recognizing and rewarding all Open Source projects.
WordPress won the 2009 Open Source Content Management System (CMS) Award in what was a very close contest with MODx and SilverStripe. While MODx was the first runner up, SilverStripe, a Most Promising CMS Award winner in 2008, made its way to the second runner up position in its first year in the Open Source CMS Award final.
The 2010 Award will feature a prize fund of $24,000 with several new categories introduced. While the Open Source CMS Award category will continue to recognize the best content management system, Packt is introducing categories for the Most Promising Open Source Project, Open Source E-Commerce Applications, Open Source JavaScript Libraries and Open Source Graphics Software.  CMSes that won the Overall CMS Award in previous years will continue to compete against one another in the Hall of Fame CMS category.
These new categories will ensure that the Open Source Awards is the ultimate platform to recognise excellence within the community while supporting projects both new and old. “We believe that the adaption of the Award and the new categories will provide a new level of accessibility, with the Award recognizing a wider range of Open Source projects; both previous winners while at the same time, encouraging new projects” said Julian Copes, organizer of this year’s Awards.
Packt has opened up nominations for people to submit their favorite Open Source projects for each category at www.PacktPub.com/open-source-awards-home . The top five in each category will go through to the final, which begins in the last week of September.
For more information on the categories, please visit Packt’s <a href="http://www.prlog.org/10845539-packt-launch-fifth-annual-open-source-awards.html">website</a>.

Packt launch fifth annual Open Source Awards

Xenia Von Wedel from SocialRadius recently did a Q&amp;A with CEO Interview Elie Auvray, to get a feeling what the Adobe / Day Software means for the Content Management market in general, and for Jahia in particular and decided to share her interview with our readers. Thanks Xenia!
Xenia Von Wedel: The announced Adobe acquisition of Day Software, a WCM competitor of yours, strikes us as a bit odd. What does WCM have to do with graphics tools?
Elie Auvray: First of all, I would like to congratulate the Day team for an outstanding deal. It is also a great recognition of the value provided by next-generation WCMs, so we at Jahia are happy about that as well.
The acquisition makes sense for Adobe, as it allows them to cover the whole value chain from content creation to its management and publication across any channel. Day will be the framework Adobe lacked for their enterprise offerings.
Xenia Von Wedel: They say that “Day customers will be able to leverage more interactive application and document capabilities from Adobe® AIR®, Adobe® Flash®, Flex, Adobe® LiveCycle® and PDF” – can’t they do that with Jahia as well?
Elie Auvray: Yes, a number of our customers already integrated some of Adobe’s flagship products with Jahia. Even through Adobe products aren’t open source, they are very interoperable – if they weren’t nobody would use them.
Xenia Von Wedel: Will the acquisition give Day a competitive advantage over Jahia?
Elie Auvray: No. Once the acquisition by Adobe is approved by authorities, Day will be even more focused on what they call the “Customer Experience Platform”, which is but one facet of Jahia’s offerings. Our mission is to unite and present content, no matter where it comes from and no matter what’s its type. Therefore Jahia will still be the vendor of choice for customers who need to tie all their content together with a sophisticated front-end solution that makes all their information silos work together, smoothly. That is very different from the mission of the now Adobe-controlled “Customer Experience Platform”. Jahia will continue to champion robust open source standards and frameworks, such as the Apache foundation. We hope that Day will continue to contribute to these frameworks, but Adobe, quite frankly, hasn’t been the best promoter of standards in our industry, aside from their own.
Xenia Von Wedel: How do you think the acquisition will influence the content management market in general?
Elie Auvray: For the casual observer, it could seem that this acquisition is simply in line with the consolidation recent trends, starting with EMC-Documentum, then Open Text-Vignette and Autonomy-Interwoven – not to mention a myriad of smaller or more technology-oriented acquisitions.
But the Adobe-Day acquisition is unique in that it polarizes the market even more and, at the same time, it commoditizes so-called ECM solutions: By making Day the backbone of its content value chain (from creation to management and delivery) as opposed to Alfresco – which seemed the logical choice considering Alfresco’s OEM relationship with Adobe – Adobe validates that Content repositories are the new commodities, and that what really matters is the tools and composite applications that are capable of being repository-agnostic.
That is very good news for Jahia, as we’ve hammered that message since our inception. It’s not good news for pure document-centric vendors that built their entire core around more limited content types, such as documents and records.
I remember that John Newton, CTO of Alfresco, said at the 2009 Boston Gilbane Conference that “a WCM can live without a DMS but a DMS cannot live without a WCM”. Adobe’s move affirms the wisdom of that comment.
Xenia Von Wedel: What’s the relationship status between WCM and ECM?
Elie Auvray: User experience platforms like Fatwire, Day, and Jahia communicate with, rather than compete with ECM/DMS. That’s why connectors, REST interfaces, and standard like CMIS are so important.
At the end of the day, what matters is software that unifies those content silos. At Jahia, we started unlocking the frontiers among software classifications with our United Content Hub (link: <a href="http://www.jahia.com/jahia/Jahia/Home/features/jahia_enterprise_class_software/Enterprise_Connectors">http://www.jahia.com/jahia/Jahia/Home/features/jahia_enterprise_class_software/Enterprise_Connectors</a>)
We think that Day is a great competitor for these reasons. It's good to face competition on such an innovative market, as it reinforces Jahia’s vision. As it is, customers shortlist us on a regular basis at the expense of Microsoft and other ECM and portal vendors that fail to deliver comparable value.
The relevance of this convergence, from a user perspective, came from Stephen Powers on January 22 of this year in “Web Content Management and Portal: Together at Last?”:
IBM is betting that the WCM and portal markets will converge and cease to be separate markets, with vendors offering combined WCM/portals suites that have one administrative tool set, one presentation management structure, one repository, and so on.
Xenia Von Wedel: Although Day Software is not open source, CTO David Nüscheler has a strong voice in the open source community. What impact will the acquisition have on the CMS community?
Elie Auvray: We really hope that David will continue to contribute to the open source community. Whether he can do it within Adobe remains to be seen, considering Adobe’s track record of strong, but not so open, products. Similar fears surfaced after Oracle acquired Sun, and the recent retirement of some of the standards Sun had shepherded should make us wary of Day’s future involvement with standards.
Xenia Von Wedel: How will the acquisition affect the remaining CMS players?
Elie Auvray: Our industry is maturing and consolidation is a natural and healthy evolution that serves the greater good: innovation. When an industry consolidates, it means yesterday’s innovations becomes today’s commodities, setting the stage for the next wave of disruption!
Xenia Von Wedel: Big companies tend to acquire, rather than innovate – can smaller players still play a vital role?
Elie Auvray: Yes. Smaller players are in the best position to innovate, since they are more nimble and technology-driven. Larger Software companies are tied to the short term imperatives of the stock market, focusing on maintenance revenues as opposed to the next big thing.
Xenia Von Wedel: Day Software and Jahia are competing in the same high-end/Enterprise CMS space – does Jahia still stand a chance considering the massive sales power Adobe brings to Day?
Elie Auvray: Blue chip companies often pick Jahia over much larger software vendors for a simple reason: our software relieves their pains faster and it costs them much less.
That has nothing to do with in-house sales power. What sales power does is to bring more opportunities. Our indirect sales model serves us well in that regard: 60% of our software-related revenue is brought by partners, and some of them have tremendous sales power. Our job is to make the best product that our partners can easily deploy and put in front of more and more customers.
Xenia Von Wedel: Conversely, will the acquisition give Jahia a price or flexibility advantages?
Elie Auvray: There has already been a lot of debate among pundits on the acquisition’s impact on the price of Day’s licenses: the short answer is no one really knows!
Xenia Von Wedel: Day Software and Jahia both say that content is everything – what are Jahia’s differentiators?
Elie Auvray: Yes, Jahia and Day share the same vision around what content really is. What we bring is an added dimension of “whatever the source or type ,” – be it a PDF stored in Alfresco, Documentum, or Sharepoint, a JSR 286 portlet, a mashup, a widget, an RSS feed or an open social gadget — these are all natively managed and supported objects in Jahia.
The market used to be divided – and still is, to a certain extent – among ECM, DMS, Portal, WCM, mashups, and other content silos, due to technical incompatibilities. This causes great confusion among users, integrators, and customers when they have to select the right product for their project.
This divide no longer makes sense, since projects must now use multiple components, or “content composites”, to fulfill customer requirements.
Xenia Von Wedel: Could you tell us more about these “content composites”?
Elie Auvray: Content Composites will make your website, portal, extranet, intranet, Enterprise 2.0, or whatever the name project much more flexible. At the end of the day it's all about what you want to do with these content-rich applications; but the core features required to deliver such solutions are basically the same. Content composites are small parts of a web site such as: Articles, files, document list, breadcrumb path, tag cloud, collaborative application, document sharing, social interactions through comments, votes, wikis, forums, and blogs: it's only a question of what, when and how you want to aggregate those content objects within your web solution.
This is consistent with our vision from day one: that all these objects should be integrated into an intuitive and unified web interface, where webmasters, content producers, and even developers can work efficiently without having to worry about the type of content or composite, or where it comes from.
We called this “web content integration”: combining WCM, DMS, and portal features in a unified web platform that communicates seamlessly with complementary third party software. Our next version, Jahia 6.5, will deliver the latest evolution of this concept in the most powerful Composite Content Platform in the market today.
Xenia Von Wedel: How do you envision the future?
Elie Auvray: Information (collective knowledge) is the most important asset companies have, after their people. As a matter of fact, Adobe products are key in our industry. But the real value is content. Not the file type, the tools or the technology.
Information –wherever it comes from- needs to be controlled and accessible not only from anywhere, but also smartly leveraged across different sites and applications. Ubiquitous digital content must be freed from technological limitations. This is the challenge confronting next-generation WCMs like Day and Jahia.

Adobe - Day: Acquisition or Big push for the Content Management Market?

ocProducts are pleased to announce the full release of ocPortal Version 5, our highly advanced web content management system. This follows a short release candidate version. This version introduces a number of bug fixes, new features, usability improvements, and a wide-sweeping design overhaul since version 4.3.2.
There are a number of key changes and additions within this version of the software; The Admin zone has been given an overhaul including new drop down menus and a much more useful front page. Design change highlights include :
<ul>
<li> A complete redesign of the Gallery system (we know this is going to make a lot of people very happy)</li>
<li>The member profile screen has been completely redesigned</li>
<li>A restructuring of the member points screen, making the points system far more intuitive.</li>
<li>The quiz screen has been redesigned</li>
<li>Just about every side block has been revised</li>
<li>A brand new commenting interface</li>
</ul>
We have given an overhaul to commenting, RSS and ratings features. These include allowing guests to choose a display name and improving the previewing of reviews. ocPortal version 5 has been thoroughly tested with IE6 and should display properly on this browser. We do however expect to drop support for IE6 once IE9 is released.
We have put a great deal of work into the ocPortal themeing system, with the aim of making it much easier for users to make their site look just how they want it to. Users can now preview all of the templates they are working on without needing switch between several screens. Other themeing features include making it easier to edit the site logo across all zones &amp; themes, alongside new CSS styled buttons. In addition to the aforementioned template screen preview system, you can methodically work through all the screens in the system in order to ensure your theme looks good.
The ocPortal gallery system has seen a raft of changes, including an improved edit screen and the ability to provide automatic video transcoding (this requires that ffmpeg is installed). There have also been changes and updates within the quiz feature, the events calendar, the catalogue system, the newsletter manager and CEDI.
We have added a new feature that we call “Real-time rain”, which allows you to visualise activity in your website, either in real-time or via historic playback, which you would otherwise only ever see in the form of plain-text logs. This feature is enormous fun for webmasters and is incredibly pretty.
We have made many more changes in addition to those listed above, which are too numerous to include here. If you would like more information (and we hope you do) please come and have a look at everything we have been working on over the last few months; you can find the Full release information at <a href="http://ocportal.com/site/news/view/new_releases/ocportal_5_released.htm">http://ocportal.com/site/news/view/new_releases/ocportal_5_released.htm</a>
