<a href="http://www.drupal.org">Drupal</a> has won the Packt Publishing 2009 Open Source CMS Award and been granted a prize of $2000.

We are pleased to announce that Drupal has won the Best Open Source PHP CMS Category in the 2009 Open Source CMS Award. This category featured a very close contest between the top three, Drupal, WordPress, and Joomla! in which Drupal ended up as the overall choice for the judges and the public.
While Drupal and Joomla! have always consistently featured among the top three in this category, WordPress made its way into the top five for the first time. The fact that it was outranked by Drupal by a very slight margin indicates how popular it has become with users as well as developers over the past year.
Runners up this year were WordPress and Joomla! who each were granted $500 prizes.
Congratulations to Drupal and it's developers.

Drupal wins 2009 Open Source PHP CMS Award

<a href="http://www.plone.org">Plone</a> has won Packt Publishing's Best Other Open Source CMS Award and been granted a prize of $2000.
Second place went to <a href="http://www.dotcms.org">dotCMS</a> and third to <a href="http://www.mojoportal.com">mojoPortal</a> who walked away with $500 each.
We are pleased to announce that Plone has won the Best Other Open Source CMS Category in the 2009 Open Source CMS Award. Plone retains the Award it won in 2008 and takes away $2,000 in the prize money.
Since the introduction of this category in 2007, Plone has consistently featured among the top three, having won it in 2008. In another close contest, dotCMS had to settle for the first runner up position, finishing ahead of mojoPortal in the second runner spot.

So far, November has been a slow month for news but looks like <a href="http://www.joomla.org">Joomla</a> has seen a new security release with 1.5.15.

Joomla 1.5.15 has been released

Further polishing Tiki3, the TikiWiki developers have released version 3.3.
This release includes wiki syntax and plugin fixes, strengthened security, and improvements in language translations and visual display, among many others.

TikiWiki CMS/Groupware 3.3 has been released

By now, many of us are excited to see the finalists for this year's Packt Publishing Open Source CMS (Content Management System) Award competition, the annual contest in which dozens of companies compete to be highlighted as the year's finest Content Management System.
Entering its fourth year, this competition has grown nearly five-fold and is widely regarded as the most prestigious award available in the CMS industry. But as successful as the competition has become, it sadly suffers from inherent issues which prevent it from truly presenting today's gamut of CMS choices in a valuable way.
Here is the reason: to even be considered as a finalist in the competition, each CMS is judged on exactly one condition: community vote counts. Granted, this can be a valid measure of a CMS's success, however today's CMS environment is very polarized. We see large majorities of people using Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress, often simply because those are the CMSs in the headlines.
As a result, these CMSs are naturally going to have far more votes in every competition – they are votes from people who already use these CMSs and who rarely branch out to explore alternatives. This self-fulfilling cycle ensures that these few CMSs continue to dominate our headlines, simply because they were the early winners and can rely on their present install-base for votes, rather than relying on the merits, features, and usability of their own systems in comparison with other CMSs.
Consider the reasons the 3 aforementioned CMS's became so well known, prior to the Packt competition: – Joomla grew because there was a lot of news coverage over several months when the developers of Mambo split to create Joomla. Since then Joomla cemented their position by encouraging commercial development of addons and now has a lot of companies incentivised to promote it and ready to come up under general Google searches.
– WordPress got a massive boost from the most vocal group of people you could hope for: bloggers, due to its blog-positive simplicity.
– Drupal has developed a massive ecosystem of web development agencies and regularly gets noticed as a side-effect of the business activity of these agencies- for example, there are countless conferences held each year.
Much of the above is good (it's good that WordPress is user-friendly, and that Drupal and Joomla have large support networks), but it should also clearly show how CMS popularity was based on headlines, the size of business networks, and incentivization, rather than a full range of factors such as usability or features. The problem we see is that the Packt competition now sustains this further.
In a way, the problems Packt creates are the problems of a two-party system in politics, and the reason why many people now promote the concept of having second-choice votes on ballots.
Put another way: The Packt Competition isn't really about finding the best CMS. The mechanics of it ensure the winners are simply those with the largest communities.
Case in point: everyone has acknowledged a need for easy theme creation but hardly anyone is doing anything about it. But the CMS I work with (which I won't mention here as I want this to stay neutral and not an advert) has had a feature to generate all-new theme stylesheets and image colors for years, and we are only now starting to see other CMSs add this.
Marketing is never free, and we understand this: we've made marketing efforts and wanted to compete in this year's competition, but realized we can't afford the high resources needed to compete on a per-vote count with the more established players. Specifically (assuming none of our users offers to do this for us) we'd need to spend a couple of weeks campaigning very hard, kind of like running a political campaign, which would be very distracting, diverting our resources. The established players, on the other hand, have to do very little to be nominated highly.
There are a lot of very good CMS's that won't do well in the Packt competition, that in many use-cases are probably better choices than those that will win.
The Solution ————
So how can we recognise the power of all CMSs in a more valuable way, and nurture more competition within the market?
The key is to rely on the best and most fair indicator we have: human experience. Imagine if the competition were to judge each entry on factors that really matter – which can't ever be measured by a machine. This would remove ‘majority rule' as the primary factor and replace it with votes based on real experience – producing far more valuable results.
We suggest the following: allow people to nominate any CMS as they currently do, but then present the top 30 nominees for public voting. Then, instead of just tallying unscreened and anonymous votes, expand the voting process by requiring each voter to have personally used at least five of the nominated CMSs. Allow them to vote for as many of those five as they like, by writing a few sentences to a paragraph describing why they believe that particular CMS is the “best” among its competition in that category or writing why they are not giving that particular CMS a vote.
This fresh approach solves the previous issue by bringing back a vital concept: accountability. Like a salesman who has never used anything except his own product, that old system discourages voters from doing any research, and to vote up “their” CMS based on what may be a very narrow viewpoint and doesn't take into account less-known CMSs, despite how well those would actually compete.
A panel of judges would compile the results and decide on the winners.
This way, the competition does not need to be a popularity contest for the masses – a few dozen voters are enough. This change embodies the belief that it's better to present 100 good votes than 10,000 bad ones.
The best part is that these changes are very do-able and, at least in my mind, would bring some much-needed competition back to this industry. In my opinion Packt can add a lot of value to the CMS community at large, truly presenting valuable new information.

It would also increase competition within the industry, thus improving features and usability across the board.
And lastly, that all lesser-known CMSs should be given the fair chance to shine against their competition (if they're worthy), and not just languish in obscurity.

With the second alpha in the works, Joomla! 1.6 appears to be getting that much closer to release. What are your expectations for 1.6?
Over the years, there have been a number of claims, whether substantiated or not, that <a href="http://www.joomla.org">Joomla!</a> has suffered from security issues and/or is overly complicated for beginners. How do you feel about this upcoming release? Do you think some of these issues will be addressed? Do you foresee a change on the horizon or just another basic update without any significant impact?
We want to provide as much feedback as possible to the Joomla! developers to help them make this the best release yet, so let's start tossing out ideas and suggestions.

What are your expectations for Joomla! 1.6?

The second alpha release of what will become Joomla! 1.6 is now available.

The Joomla project is pleased to announce the immediate release of Joomla 1.6 alpha 2. This release contains many new features requested by the community; most notably, ACL. Other features are listed below as well as what you can expect in the future for Joomla 1.6.
This is an alpha release. It is intended to be a developer/hobbyist preview and is not intended to be used on a production web site.

Second alpha release of Joomla 1.6 available

A new point release of MODx evolution has made an appearance on the MODx website.
This is, according to the blog post announcing the release, a pretty substantial update. Here are some of the feature highlights for MODx Evolution 1.0.1:
Security Multiple areas have been improved to help protect against unlikely but possible CSRF attacks in the Manager. In addition, Ajax Search has been updated to version 1.8.4 which prevents content injection when JS is off in the browser and the Manager password reminder has been updated to prevent forged logins under different usernames.
ManagerManager Manager Manager is now a part of the core distribution. This Plugin leverages jQuery to allow developers to completely customize the Manager experience for end users. Some useful input widgets are included by default (tagging, color picker, image TV preview) and new widgets can be developed to streamline your daily content management. ManagerManager gives you the benefits of a fully bespoke/custom CMS, coupled with the support of large Open Source Community and maintaining an upgrade path for future releases.

New MODx CMS release available

The award winning content management system, CMS Made Simple, reached an important milestone today.
CMS Made Simple surpassed 750,000 downloads since it's 0.1 version release in July of 2004. CMS Made Simple is known across the world by developers for it's simplification of web site deployments.
In their blog article CMS Made Simple thanks it's user community for their outstanding support and the communities enthusiasm is credited for giving the development team the energy to continue developing the system.

CMS Made Simple Reaches 750,000 downloads

The WordPress development team have released a security update to the 2.8 series of the popular blog platform. 
A number of the changes that are outlined below were back ported in order to provide enhanced security for the 2.8 series while the team works hard on 2.9.
The headline changes in this release are:

<li>A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.</li>
<li>Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.</li>
<li>Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.</li>
<li>Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.</li>

Campsite 3.3.3 ushers in a number of new features

We had the pleasure recently of interviewing Bill Rogers, founder and CEO of the popular content management system company, Ektron.
CC: Thank you for taking the time to speak with us today, could you give us a bit of an outline as to your history with Ektron and your background?
BR: Ektron was founded in 1998 in the basement of my house in Hollis,NH. In the late nineties it was becoming apparent to me that the Web was going to impact dramatically how everyone did business. With that realization in mind, I started Ektron with the idea of eventually building an operating system for the Web, to empower business people to be able to effectively manage their Web presence.
As part of the initial effort we created a WYSIWYG editor, eWebEditPro which was OEMed by several of the leading players in the CMS space. Through eWebEditpro’s success and the selling of our own CMS offering we gained additional exposure to the world of content management and we have consistently applied the knowledge we gained throughout these experiences to our efforts which culminated in the release of Ektron CMS400.NET.
Now, a decade later, Ektron has grown to over 200 people with office locations across the globe and more than 7,500 CMS customers.
CC: Having recently been identified in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for 2009 in the Visionary’s quadrant is quite the compliment. Why do you think they chose that section?
BR: This placement reflects the fact that Gartner sees an alignment between Ektron’s technology, our product roadmap and where Gartner’s clients are going to be looking to take their Web sites both in the near-term and over the long haul.
In the near future we believe that Web sites will transform into mash-ups that pull data and functionality from other Web sites into one location where clients can access and interact with that content and functionality as well as add their own content and functionality.
We have been building the technology to power this new type of Web site for several years. For instance, our social media platform allows developers to build mash-ups using widgets that pull information from social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube or business applications like SalesForce or TestTrackPro. These widgets can then be deployed by business users using our PageBuilder functionality on-the-fly.
CC: What do you say to their comments that Ektron “…may be perceived as only marginally better than SharePoint?”
BR: That perception compared to the reality of the problems we solve is different. If you are talking about document and group collaboration, SharePoint and Ektron are both strong products. If you are talking about building a branded Web site that’s public facing you have to take into consideration dealing with things like site deployments and the management of user generated content (synchronization), localization and the ability for marketers and business users to easily manage their organization’s online marketing and branding efforts. Ektron provides the technology to fully develop and manage a company’s online presence whether it is an intranet, extranet or public-facing Web site.
CC: To what do you attribute Ektron’s success in the market?
BR: The number one thing that Ektron is focused on is the success of the Web project as opposed to just a software sale. We understand that a Web project is about solving a critical business issue and we work closely with both our end clients and our Partners to ensure the project is successful and the end goals are met.
In addition to being committed to the success of their Web projects Ektron always asks our customers the question, “What do you want your Web site to do?” and we take action on the answers. Our ability to quickly bring to market the type of digital marketing functionality that our customers ask for combined with our own experience and understanding of where the Web is taking today’s businesses is another key factor in our success.
CC: Do you have any plans to widen your reach and branch into other market segments? If so, which and why?
BR: As I mentioned, we have had success at Ektron because we constantly ask our customers the question “What do you want your Web site to do?” and we take action on the answers. Because we continue to ask this question we continue to develop new tools and applications that our customers need to take their Web strategies to the next level.
For Ektron, it’s about more than just content management, it’s about listening to our customers’ and Partners’ needs and building the tools they need to align their Web sites with their business goals and their vision. Beginning with version 8.0, you are going to see Ektron continue to move into areas like social networking, online marketing and business intelligence.
CC: What have been your biggest successes for 2009 to date?
BR: When others have said to cut back we have significantly pushed forward with growth and it is paying off. We released game-changing technologies like PageBuilder and eSync. We have also added key personnel and built out our services organization to support the type of enterprise deals we are consistently winning. This commitment to developing our technology and growing our company has led to growth in revenue of 35 percent so far this year and I expect this growth to continue as we come to the end of 2009.
CC: What separates Ektron from its competitors?
BR: The most important thing to Ektron is customer satisfaction and therefore we differentiate ourselves by focusing on more than building great out-of-the-box functionality on a scalable Web development platform that allows for customization. We have built a complete services infrastructure to ensure the success of our customers. No other vendor can deliver the type of Web project support Ektron does to both our end clients and Partners.
We are also committed to innovation around what customers need to deliver engaging user experiences rather than strictly Web content management functionality. This innovation has led to the development of some truly differentiating technologies like our bi-directional synchronization engine and PageBuilder functionality.
CC: Do you have plans to expand into any other geographical locations?
BR: We recently relocated our Australian office to Sydney and opened an office in Singapore. We are always keeping our eye on other geographical locations as we continue to expand. In addition to physical office locations we have a large partner program and distribution channel that is also growing.
CC: What do you think is the biggest misconception about content management systems?
BR: People say the word CMS and the definition that they will receive from each of the vendors is completely different. We more broadly define the term than any other vendor in the marketplace. We believe that anything that interacts with your Web site should be able to be managed through your CMS.
CC: How do you personally define a CMS?
BR: A CMS is no longer about just managing a piece of content on your Web site. A CMS should be able to allow a non-technical user to manage any asset on a Web site that they wish to interact with, whether that is a piece of content, a picture, a video or information that is pulled from other sources. The CMS should allow marketing teams to launch online campaigns and manage rich internet applications. As I say, in the future Web sites will be mash-ups of information and functionality pulled from multiple locations. A scalable Web CMS solution should be able to display and manage that information regardless of where it is coming from.
CC: What situations do you feel best suit the use of Ektron over other CMS platforms?
BR: There are many different situations where a client would look to implement Ektron CMS400.NET. Some of the big game changers for Ektron that truly differentiate our solution from others include our PageBuilder and eSync technology. When organizations have the need to not only allow non-technical employees to be able to manage the content and assets on their Web site but also build new Web pages and add functionality on the fly, they look to Ektron. Similarly, if an organization is looking for a scalable platform with geo-synchronization capabilities they look to Ektron.
In other instances, organizations look to Ektron for social software and community expertise on both collaborative intranets and public-facing online communities. We also offer more out-of-the-box functionality than other vendors but still allow our clients the ability to easily customize the solution to fit their needs.
CC: Do you have any insight you can provide as to what can be expected from the next release?
BR: In the next release you will see a lot of new Social features, completely rebuilt calendaring and event management functionality, PageBuilder enhancements, eCommerce engine improvements, analytics and multivariate testing and a new user interface. In addition, we will also be including more tools on which marketers can build their online Web strategies.
