What I Mean to Say: A Practitioner Perspective on AI, Semantics, and Content Evolution

The Accrisoft story begins back in 1999 when Entrepreneur Jeff Kline, owner of a technology hardware company called Accris, co-founded InternetCoast, a nonprofit initiative to support technology ventures in South Florida and position the region as a global science and technology hub.
They needed a website, so they hired a company called I-Network, who did an excellent job. Realizing that rapid, effective development of powerful websites was the future of computing and technology, Accris acquired the company and built a separate organization concentrating on the software side of the business. Accrisoft was launched as an independent company in 2001.
However, as they built more and more websites, they realized the frustration of working from scratch every time; the answer, Accrisoft decided, was to build a software platform that automated the commonalities so websites could be built in a fraction of the time. There was also the issue of being able to make updates to a website without technical expertise. The new system would have to make it easy for anyone in the organization to update and manage the site.
Accrisoft’s first product was Freedom CMS, a content management system for rapidly building and maintaining dynamic, database-driven websites. Several years later, Accrisoft developed a customer relationship management tool to be known as Endeavor CRM. This product is used to manage every stage of the website development life cycle, from generating leads to providing support.
Closely aligning themselves with the web hosting company Verio, Accrisoft distributed their products through Verio’s reseller channel, where they found great success with other Verio resellers and distributors, developing a global presence.
The company steadily grew over the next decade. The next major milestone came in 2009, when Accrisoft products moved to a software as a service (SaaS) platform, meaning that installation and server management were performed by Accrisoft, allowing resellers to focus on their core businesses.
In 2010, realizing the need to provide both sides of the business with focused attention, the company spun off its website development branch into a separate company called Accrinet, which uses Accrisoft’s software to build websites for its clients. Accrisoft continues to focus on software development, with Accrinet its largest reseller.
Entering their second decade of existence, Accrisoft is well-positioned to capture an ever-larger user base and continue its growth.

Textpattern has often been heralded as one of the most flexible open source CMS available. With it's small footprint and straight forward interface, it's also a favorite of designers and developers around the world.  Today, we're going to take a look at Textpattern and what makes it so agile in this Textpattern review.
To start off with, the typical size (of this writing) of the Textpattern download is approximately half a meg. This is incredibly small for a CMS with such power and flexibility. Installation is pretty standard and there's not much to really show there that isn't typical to most CMS. You'll get prompted to enter your database credentials, create a config file and enter user details.
Once complete, you'll be taken to the login screen for the back end. Enter your credentials to log in and you'll see the Textpattern dashboard:

Note that the CMS defaults to the Write tab. This is due to the fact that this is likely the first thing most people will want to do when logging in. A simple but smart decision by the Textpattern development team. You may also note that there are no typical post buttons for bold, italics and the like. That's because by default, Textpattern uses textile syntax for formatting.
For those use to Wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) editors, this may be a bit of a shock. Textile is a very easy to use syntax and personally, I prefer it. You can see more about what textile syntax looks like here: <a href="http://textile.thresholdstate.com/">Textile Syntax</a>. Once you've used it, you may begin to prefer it over standard HTML.
Textpattern is all about flexibility, however, so should you prefer to use a Wysiwyg editor, you can simply install a plugin to do so.
For testing purposes and to show how the plugin installation process works, let's go ahead and install a plugin to add a new editor to the system.
First, you would search for the appropriate plugin on the <a href="http://textpattern.org/plugins/">Textpattern Resources</a> site. For this test, we'll use the <a href="http://textpattern.org/plugins/505/hak_tinymce">hak_tinymce plugin</a>.
Once downloaded and extracted, you will see three files:

The plugin itself is a simple txt file. This is standard for all Textpattern plugins and, as you'll soon see, one of the reasons why plugin installation is so easy to do for anyone. For this plugin, we need to upload the tiny_mce folder to our /textpattern directory on our web host, so we'll go ahead and do that.
Once we've uploaded the tiny_mce folder, we simply open the hak_tinymce.txt file in your favorite text editor and copy the contents. Then navigate to your Admin – Plugins tab in Textpattern and you'll see a box like this:

Simply scroll down and underneath the Plugin Help: section, you'll see an Install button. Clicking on this will install the plugin. Now, as per instructions in the plugin zip file, you need to initialize the plugin. Navigate to Extensions, hak_tinymce and click the install button (Note that this process is usually not required for most plugin installs and is exclusive to this particular plugin. Most of the time, this step is not present / required at all.)
Once you click install, you'll be given a list of options to choose from for the editor. You can either modify these settings or ignore them and click update.
Head back to Admin/Plugins and you'll now see the plugin listed in the screen below:

Head back to Content, Write and on the left, you'll see a new toggle:

Place a checkmark in the Article box to turn on the editor. The result:

That's it. You now have a Wysiwyg editor.
As I mentioned during this process, the typical plugin install does not require anything to be actually uploaded, nor does it require navigating to the Extensions tab. Most of the time, you simply paste the text file contents in the plugin box and click install, then activate it and you are done.
Let's take a look at some more pieces of the admin interface, shall we?
There are two levels of tabs available. The top level represents the main tabs, while the bottom level represents sub tabs. For example, clicking on the Content tab at the top enables the following sub tabs (Category, Write, Articles, etc):

These are all quite straight forward. Let's take a look at the Images tab. Uploading images is simple, just select and upload. Once it's been uploaded, you'll be given the opportunity to crop into a thumbnail, add to a category and modify the alt text as required.

Under here, you can modify your Sections, Pages, Forms and Styles. In the Sections tab, you have the opportunity to assign templates and styles to individual sections. For instance, the Articles section uses a different template and style sheet than the the About section (more about sections <a href="http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Sections">here</a>).

As you can see, you can also determine where sections are shown and whether or not they are included in the site search. The Pages tab is next. This is where you can create and modify the templates for each page.

A very cool feature of the Pages tab is the Tag builder (shown on the left of the screenshot above). This allows you to make selections form the list on the left and it will show you which code to insert into the template to accomplish that task. This is a great feature to help you get familiar with the system.
Next are Forms.
This is one of Textpattern's key strengths. Using forms, you can separate your code into reusable chunks (more about forms <a href="http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Forms_Explained">here</a>).
On this install, for instance, I've created a form which contains nothing more than my <a href="http://piwik.org">Piwik</a> analytics code from my Statistics system.

Now, I simply call the form in my Page template wherever I wish using this code:

It's as simple as that. Now, should I need to include this analytics code on multiple pages or in more than one place, I can do so with the code above. The advantage to this style of coding is that if I need to change the code for whatever reason in the future, I simply change the code in the form as opposed to having to edit each template in multiple places. Developers love this feature, for obvious reasons.
The styles tab provides an interface to edit the stylesheets or create new ones as needed.
Under the admin section, the following sub tabs exist:

The Preferences tab provides you with access to the settings of the CMS.

To manage users, simply head to the Users tab.  Here, you can modify privileges and details for your users. On the Visitors log tab, you can see all of the latest visitors to your site if you have logging enabled. For the most part, it's better to use an Analytics program such as Piwik or Google Analytics.
We've already seen the Plugins section, so we'll skip over that. On the Import tab, you can choose to import content from a variety of other systems and CMS.

That, ladies and gentleman, covers pretty much the entire Admin interface for Textpattern. From a usage standpoint, there's definitely a bit of a learning curve to get used to the way that Textpattern handles itself, but once you do, you'll discover the true power of this system.
For me, what draws me to use it is the minimalist nature of the CMS. I love the speed of the interface (it's lightning fast compared to other CMS such as WordPress) and I find Textile for article writing to be intuitive and produce cleaner content.
There is an active community and plenty of plugins to accomplish pretty much anything you might need. If you are looking for a system that's powerful, fast and has plenty of options, Textpattern is a great choice. If you are a developer, it's even better given the flexibility of the forms system. I highly recommend checking out Textpattern.

Textpattern Review

We’ve been chomping at the bit to get this feature implemented and the time is finally right.
In previous versions, a programmer had to write custom code in order to generate URLs that match the content that is being displayed (for example, http://mysite.com/products/outdoors/patiofurniture/ as opposed to http://mysite.com/products.aspx?categoryID=5&amp;productID=21421). Now, Agility takes care of this code for you so page URLs are automatically generated using readable words based on a the new Dynamic Page sitemap item.
Let's take a look at how it works.
Dynamic Pages When you create a new page, you now have the option to make it a Dynamic Page. Dynamic Pages will automatically generate pages on your site based on a list of content items.
The path, menu text and page title of these pages can be defined using content fields from the list so you can be sure that search engines are picking up the right information and users have an easy-to-read link in their bookmarks.
Dynamic pages can have multiple layers to accommodate content hierarchy.
Digital Content and Dynamic Page Lists A new section has been added called ‘Digital Content'. Shared Content is now incorporated into this new section, along with a new content type call Dynamic Page Lists.
Dynamic Page Lists are used to house the content that is used to generate dynamic pages. You can either access these page lists from your Dynamic Pages in the Pages section, or go directly to the Dynamic Page List under Digital Content.
You can also take any existing Shared Content list and convert it to a Dynamic Page List.
URL Redirections You now have the ability to define URL redirections based on relative or absolute URLs, User Agents and Languages.
This is critical for when you are migrating from an old site to a new one. The “301 – Permanent” HTTP code ensures that Google and other search engines carry your page rank over from the old site to the new one.
Release Frequency You're probably thinking “Wow, didn't we just have an Agility release a little while ago?” Yes, we did. We've shortened our release schedule so that we can bring you features and fixes quicker and more reliably than ever.
Each release will be rolled out to all accounts over a 4-6 week period.

Nuxeo Releases New Version of Studio

ExpressionEngine 2.2 is now available for download.  This is a major release and brings improvements on a number of fronts: a new file module (and related enhancements), speed/code optimization, a developer friendly authorization library, 180+ bug fixes, CP user experience tweaks, and improved documentation.
Some more on the changes:

Today's big story is the acquisition of FatWire Software by none other than Oracle. This is a surprise purchase of a successful CMS vendor and appears to be a trend that is developing of late whereby larger companies such as Adobe (see <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/adobe-acquire-day-software/">Adobe/Day Acquisition</a>) and Oracle are building up their content management offerings.

BitNami and Amazon Provide Free CMS Hosting for a Year

OmniUpdate, the leading web content management system (CMS) provider for higher education, has released version 9.9 of its OU Campus™ CMS. This release includes a highly requested new feature called Dependency Manager.
The Dependency Manager ensures that hyperlinks to pages that are managed within OU Campus are always up to date. If a user decides to rename a page or move it to a new location, the Dependency Manager will automatically update the URL found in the associated pages and update those pages on the live server. If a page is deleted, thereby causing broken hyperlinks, the user is notified to take action on those pages.
The Dependency Manager is particularly important for a higher education website, which may have thousands of web pages written by hundreds of authors. Due to dispersed job locations and vastly different work responsibilities, web content authors may not know each other or be aware of changes made to site content. The development of the new Kajona version 3.4.0 took nearly ten months, but it was worth waiting. The Kajona team used the time to refactor many aspects of the system, providing both, visible changes at the user-interface and invisible changes under the hood. Like the release name “berlin” hints at, most of the feedback from this year's LinuxTag in Berlin was already implemented in Kajona 3.4.0.
Portaleditor Editors responsible for maintaining the websites' content will love the improved in-site-editing. For the first time it's now possible to even create new pages right in the portal. This means, the editor may maintain the website using the portaleditor only – the backend is only required for more sophisticated tasks. By the improved in-site-editing support of galleries and downloads, the workflow is optimized even more.
Administration By switching from the portal to the comprehensive backend, the editor or administrator is supported by consequently used dialogs. Those dialogs and the usage of AJAX speed up the interface-experience noticeable and at many aspects. Working with forms is now easier than ever since mandatory fields are marked automatically by the system. The developer of a module only has to declare the mandatory fields, everything else, rendering and validation, is made by the framework transparently in the background.
In addition, the backend now supports optional “aspects” to categorize the backend into logical groups reflecting the current use case. When using those aspects, unused modules are removed from the interface reducing the complexity even more.
Navigations Besides the classical, manual maintenance of navigation-trees and the flexibility achieved by this approach, it is now possible to generate navigations completely automatically.
Therefore the page-structure is analysed and transformed into a navigation-structure on-the-fly. Since new pages appear in the navigation immediately, the effort required to maintain the navigation is reduced to somewhere near zero.
New Modules By popular request, Kajona 3.4.0 ships with an initial implementation of a new event-manager. The module will be extended and improved in upcoming version reflecting the feedback of the users.
Furthermore, the support of tags was introduced, providing a way to enrich records with meta-information. Those tags may be rendered in the portal as a tag-cloud or as a keyword-list.
The PDF functionality was declared as stable and added to the default set of modules.
Framework The framework was optimized at many places, providing an even faster way of extending the framework by adding new functionality.
One of the main new features is the introduced support of prepared statements. In this context the Kajona-internal database-drivers mysql and sqlite had to be removed from the packages – by the usage of the even more modern drivers mysqli and sqlite3 there shouldn't emerge any problems. Up from version 3.4.0 the list of officially supported databases comprises MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite and PostgreSQL.
While queries using the old schema are still fully functional, developers should migrate to prepared statements as soon as possible.
By adding new lifecyle-methods such as class_element_admin::doBeforeSaveToDb() and class_model::doAdditionalActionsOnStatusChange($strSystemid), developers are now able to react on even more events triggered by the system. The controller now resolves the actions to call transparently by reflection, a module-internal resolving and dispatching by the developer is no longer necessary.
Changes made to objects may be logged by the new changelog-mechanism. If activated, the system tracks all changes made to objects by using a separate log-table and thus provides a way to trace changes on a very granular base.

Open Source CMS Kajona V3.4.0 "berlin" is ready

A new version of Textpattern CMS has been released. Version 4.4.1 takes care of a security vulnerability that was present in previous versions so upgrading is highly recommended.

All versions prior to TXP 4.4.1 were open to CSRF attacks; pronounced sea-surf. While it’s out of scope in this article to discuss what makes up such an attack, it generally works by tricking a logged-in user into clicking something (e.g. an <code>&lt;img&gt;</code> tag which isn’t an actual image). This link secretly accesses something on the admin side using the current logged-in user’s credentials and performs some action — submits an article, deletes something, whatever. If the user in question is an admin, the potential for damage is high.
To combat this, we now use unique tokens passed in each admin-side form and AJAX request to ensure that the request originated on the admin side from the correct form. Any jiggery pokery results in failure for the attacker and a typically TXPish message.
This release also introduces a new security privilege <code>image.create.trusted</code> which prohibits untrusted users from uploading SWF images to the Images tab.
