In order to more efficiently manage the millions of letters he receives from children, Santa is working with KnowledgeTree to implement a new cloud-based document management system. This will enable Santa to create a more streamlined work environment for his incredibly busy and merry teams of elves, and simplify what can be a chaotic toy specification, manufacture and delivery process. KnowledgeTree will contribute $1 for every letter to Santa uploaded between now and December 23, 2010 to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
With child population (not to mention children’s expectations) reaching unprecedented heights, Santa needed a document management system to simplify the increasingly complex set of tasks he faces each year. Santa’s workflow includes reviewing the millions of letters he receives, compiling the naughty and nice lists, and managing the logistical processes that need to be completed by Christmas Eve in order to fulfill the wishes of children worldwide on Christmas Day. With the Big Day less than five weeks away, Saint Nick needed a system that did not require extensive training and could be accessed anytime and anywhere by members of his elf production, dispatch, and route optimization teams. With cloud-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications providing these functionalities, a year’s worth of stress is alleviated for the man who works one day a year.
Beginning today, children from all over the world can send their letters to Santa via his dedicated “Letters to Santa” site (https://santa.knowledgetree.com). Once uploaded, these letters will be processed through the various approvals Santa has customized, which include a naughty/nice check, a toy making step, dimension specification check to assign toy delivery via the chimney or doorway, sleigh loading/reindeer readying process, and GPS mapping. Santa’s elves can complete their specified tasks – build toys or allocate coal – and push approvals down the line. Once he receives notification that the preceding workflow steps have been completed, Santa can check the lists twice and give the final approval before the toys are loaded onto the sleigh in the early evening hours of December 24, 2010.
“We’ve taken the North Pole into the cloud, and I couldn’t be happier,” said the plump, jolly, white-bearded man wearing his signature red coat with white collar and cuffs. “This job is hard and I’m not getting any younger, you know? While I will still visit with little boys and girls at parades, shopping malls, and department stores, I strongly encourage children to upload their letters to me online. From there, our new system will make easy work of what was turning into an incredibly daunting task – managing the millions of letters we received each year. Now the elves, the Missus and I are all on the same page. Collaborating with my staff through the cloud has saved time and energy, and by Christmas morning, shipping errors will have been drastically reduced, assuring smiles on children’s faces around the world.”
With the structured approval process made available by the cloud, mistakes are a thing of the past. “Sometimes the elves mistakenly would send Xbox games to kids with PlayStations,” Santa said. “Mistakes like those reflected poorly on our entire organization. But now the approval processes we have in place help us pay better attention to detail,” Santa remarked, jerking his head toward embattled elf, Buddy.
“While our typical customer works in finance, legal, or sales and marketing, Santa’s organizational challenges are no different or less demanding,” said Daniel Chalef, CEO of KnowledgeTree. “Anyone who has worked in an office knows the frustration of sharing documents with colleagues – let alone the millions Santa receives each year. Christmastime is the most wonderful time of the year, and we are very pleased to make the job a little easier for Santa.”
At press time, KnowledgeTree does not integrate with Santa’s innate ability to know which children are sleeping and awake, but R&amp;D is hoping to unveil a product update prior to Thanksgiving 2011.

Santa Claus is Coming to Cloud

Elcom, a leading Australian enterprise web content management vendor, announced at the 2010 Gartner IT Symposium that it will be expanding into the North American market by opening an office in New York City, in January 2011.
Elcom’s Chief Executive Officer, John Anstey said “We have had a lot of interest from the USA and it represents a substantial growth opportunity for Elcom. It is a logical next step in expanding our global reach and sales efforts”.
North America, currently dominates the global Web Content Management (WCM) market, and according to leading technology research body Gartner, it “accounts for 60% of worldwide revenue”. Further to this, Gartner predicts that “the market will see a compound annual growth rate of 14% from 2009 to 2014”, making Elcom’s entry into the US market a highly lucrative opportunity.
The New York office will provide Elcom with a North American presence that can manage Elcom’s partners and clients in the continent. “In the last eighteen months, there has been a significant increase in the number of enquiries from the USA and Canada. The opening of the New York office will now allow Elcom to offer the same level of dedicated local support and service as it does to its Australian partners and clients, to those based in North America”, said Anstey.
Elcom will continue to build its Partner Network and work closely with agencies, web developers, system integrators and consultants. The New York office will look to train and develop partners and customers, bringing Elcom’s WCMS, CommunityManager.NET to the North American market. “In Australia, our reputation is based on value, product innovation and local support, and we are excited at the opportunity to offer this to a completely different marketplace”, said the CEO.
The company’s CommunityManager.NET product is used by hundreds of local and international organisations to streamline processes and improve information architecture. According to CEO John Anstey, “this is achieved through simplifying the development, publishing and management of online content in the form of websites, intranets, extranets, membership systems, web applications, e-commerce processes and mobile platforms.”
Elcom recently released Version 7.2 of CommunityManager.NET which has a host of new features and upgrades from previous versions. Some of Version 7.2’s other enhancements also include a new analytics engine which enables marketers to collect, analyse and report on variety of campaign metrics, while owning all data – unlike other service providers that keep this information for industry analysis.
The new version also includes an office connector with the ability to publish content from within Microsoft Word or Outlook; this extends the existing functionality of the SharePoint connector allowing CommunityManager.NET to seamlessly co-exist with an existing SharePoint solution.

When you first log in to the Administrative Interface for Contegro, you are greeted with a familiar look and feel to what you would expect from a Windows Desktop:

Double clicking on the editor on the Contegro web desktop pops up an editor that allows you to browse the various aspects of the site and edit them.
Within editor view, there are three icons located on the right side of the window that allow you to switch between the various modes:

The icons in order that they appear are: Preview, Compact Edit and Preview Edit.
Preview mode should be pretty obvious. It shows you a preview of the site without any obstructions. Compact edit shows the site layout with the individual module boxes and no previews available:

Right clicking on any of the pages on the left pane brings up a context menu with various options:

Do you wish to change the order of your pages? You can do so by simply clicking and dragging the page to it's new location directly from the left pane of the window in the screenshot above.
Should you move a page to a new parent page, you will be prompted to create a 301 redirect to ensure that you maintain your search engine visibility. This is a handy and well thought out addition that makes rearranging your site's structure less daunting.
Modifying the individual modules is easy to do as well. You simply click on the wrench icon and a new window with the various settings for that module appears. Let's say you want to change the categories to display by order of popularity instead of by name. Simply click on the wrench for the category list:

There is a dropdown menu available called “Group Items By:” that you can simply adjust to use popularity. It's as simple as that. As you can see, there are plenty of options and ways to customize the individual modules to best suit them to your needs.
Each area of the template can be given a specific set of design rules or CSS attributes and you can see how this works very easily. Simply drag your module from the left pane of your website to the middle pane and the module will automatically reskin itself based on the CSS attributes of that pane. This saves you a ton of time when it comes to making adjustments to your site's appearance.
Adding modules to your site is also fairly straight forward. To add a module to an area, click on one of the green + signs beside your module name:
This will bring up a dropdown box for you to select your new module from. In the drop down box are a number of modules for you to select from.

Editing content and settings from here is as simple and straight forward as clicking on the appropriate icon. Should you wish to edit content, for instance, you can simply click the icon for editing and up pops the window:

Right now, the editor shows the full set of available options but can easily be restricted to show only specific buttons, should you wish.
The file explorer can be found by clicking on the Document icon on the Contegro desktop. This window allows you to browse the hierarchical structure of your documents and images as well as manage the contents within.

As you can see in the screenshot above, you can also edit the metadata of the individual documents as well as their access levels should you choose to do so. One thing I encountered and I initially found a bit inconvenient is that there does not appear to be a way to upload multiple documents to the repository from this application. It seems to only allow you to upload them one at a time.
I was informed, however, that there is a document Library add-on module that is used for managing large volumes of documents as it takes away the manual linking. The Document Library includes an import feature that allows you to zip all documents and import as one file and is ideal for managing from 100 – 10,000 + documents.
When it comes to managing images, you can easily select and upload multiples in one go and it uploads them quickly without issue.
Moving to the security management aspect of the product, I found access permissions to be quite easy to configure with numerous restrictions that can be applied quickly and easily:

What I especially like is the ability to modify HTML Editor Permissions. Often in my consulting work, I am asked if the systems that are available can be made as simple as possible and this is a great way to do so. You can restrict the toolbars within the editor to only show the basics so as not to overwhelm those who are not as comfortable with technology. This is a great addition and you don't have to hunt and peck around the software to find it, which is nice.
Developers will love the template management that Contegro offers as well. You can add, move, replace quickly and easily from the template menu. There is also the ability to lock the module in place so it cannot be moved, allow or disallow additional modules to be added to a defined template area and allow or disallow module deletion.

Creating new templates is quick and easy and you can specify custom CSS files to use for each template within the system. Contegro also allows you to create and add snippets of code into your templates quickly and easily. To find your available snippets, simply click on the Contegro start menu, Content, Snippets. You will be able to see all prepopulated snippets and be able to quickly and easily insert your own.

Once you've created a snippet, adding them to your template is as simple as selecting the template area you wish to add it to and selecting it from a drop down list.
Workflow management is an integral part of any CMS and Contegro is no exception to the rule. It has an extensive 2 &amp; 3 step workflow process that can be managed down to page level. To setup workflow for different groups, click on the Contegro Start Bar &gt;&gt; Accounts &gt;&gt; Administrator &gt;&gt; Group Permissions.
Do you need the ability to manage multiple sites? Contegro can easily handle this as well. New sites can be created directly from within the CMS using the following menu item:

Once created, switching is as easy as selecting the new site from a popup on the right side of the screen.
Conclusion
In summary, if you are a developer or designer looking for a stable product with plenty of functionality that offers scalability, ease of use and excellent security management then Contegro is a great choice.
With it's easy to use template system, ability to integrate code snippets and multi-site management capabilities.. Contegro is sure to be a hit among the design community.

Sitecore’s New E-Commerce Platform Helps Manage Customer Lifecycle Success

Today marks the release of DotNetNuke 5.6. Version 5.6 of the Professional Edition and Enterprise Edition includes the new DotNetNuke Site Search, which enables more effective web site content search, and Enhanced Google Analytics Support, which provides greater performance and control over the monitoring of web site traffic. It also includes significant enhancements to Content Approval Workflows, which extends the ability of organizations to control changes to their web site content. In addition, a new perpetual license option is now available in addition to the existing annual subscription license.
The new Site Search engine includes rich query syntax with support for Boolean searches, phrase searches, relevance searches, wild cards, fuzzy searches, and groupings. Based on Lucene, the system includes a true web spider that is capable of indexing any site, whether it is built on DotNetNuke or not.
The Enhanced Analytics Support allows users to take full advantage of Google Analytics. The system has been upgraded to the latest integration best practices from Google and now enables tracking of sub-domains as a single entity as well as the use of up to five segmentation rules per page.

A new version of Bigace, the open source content management system, is available. Development on the 2.7 series has slowed down quite a bit in preparation for the next major release. In the interim, however, 2.7.4 was released to address a few issues and introduce a few new features:
