At last week’s <a target="_blank" href="https://webflow.com/webflowconf">Webflow Conf 2024</a> – the company’s annual hurrah catering to designers, developers, marketers, and even business leaders – <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/lktong/">CEO Linda Tong</a> announced that the web experience platform had purchased <a target="_blank" href="https://gsap.com/">GreenSock</a>, the company behind the <a target="_blank" href="https://gsap.com/">GreenSock Animation Platform</a> (better known by its “GSAP” moniker).If you’re not immediately familiar with the GreenSock brand, that’s OK. GSAP is slightly exotic but well-known amongst super JS design enthusiasts. Over time, it has established itself as an industry-leading solution for animation experiences on the web layer. So what makes this dance-worthy, exactly? As GreenSock boldly proclaims on its homepage, GSAP lets you “animate anything” that JavaScript can touch. At its core, GSAP is a JS library that helps modern designers and developers craft lush, dynamic, silky-smooth animations that are, in a word, stunning. And it's proven: GSAP is well-adopted and already in use on over 12 million sites. If you haven’t experienced what’s possible with GSAP, I highly recommend perusing their website (there’s a great showcase <a target="_blank" href="https://gsap.com/">you can view here</a>). Just keep scrolling, and you’ll instantly see what makes it cool. With its array of functions, you can build UI that’s undeniably immersive, or take logos and SVG graphics to the next level with morphing and motion plugins. You can add mouth-gaping flare to text in seconds – and bring your web pages to life with fun sequences that visually shake things up. Below is a great primer from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/c/timothyricks">Timothy Ricks</a>, a resident YouTube “Webflow Wizard,” about leveraging GSAP with Webflow. It demonstrates how integrated the platforms have already become – and how indispensable a tool it has proven to be. In fact, there are Udemy courses available for learning how to develop JavaScript animations using GSAP. <figure class="media"><div data-oembed-url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4YKslkob9Q"><div style="position:relative;padding-bottom:100%;height:0;padding-bottom:56.2493%"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/m4YKslkob9Q" style="position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;top:0;left:0" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></div></figure> For all of these reasons, acquiring GSAP is a logical move for Webflow. As it further embraces its Web Experience Platform (WXP) positioning, it’s doubling down on delivering a breadth of easy-to-use capabilities with native insights and optimization features that evoke legacy DXPs – but with more integrated features like AI and, now, expansive animation. As Tong pointed out in her announcement, there were some phenomenal new bells and whistles unveiled at Webflow Conf, all focused on shaping how marketers build, manage, and evolve the future of the web. Clearly, animation is providing differentiated value in this quest for delivering amazing digital experiences. “Today’s CMOs are asked to own the brand and revenue, and marketing teams are under pressure to convert more of the visitors that do show up at the website into customers,” she said. “The best-performing sites we've seen are dynamic and leverage interactions to bring their experiences to life.”It’s true that assets like video and animation can improve website performance and conversions. Video alone can increase these key metrics by 86% – while adding a one- to two-minute website animation <a target="_blank" href="https://wow-how.com/articles/do-animated-websites-convert-leads#:~:text=Conversion%20rates,-64%25%20of%20people&amp;text=The%20autoplay%20video%20page%20receives,sales%20than%20just%20a%20text.">can generate up to 70% more sales</a> than static text. It’s for these reasons that downstream website builders like <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/squarespace">Squarespace</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/wix">Wix</a> have been steadily adding animation features to their respective feature sets. The tools vary in their general scope, but they both offer a decent amount of control and customization. Adding GSAP is perhaps less of an answer to these alternative platforms and more of a clear commitment to Webflow users that the platform is continuing to innovate and enrich its offerings.“With GSAP, you can animate pretty much anything on the web, just by writing some JavaScript, delivering a delightful consumer experience,” Tong explained. “Web developers and designers love GSAP because it's performant, super flexible, framework agnostic, and surprisingly easy to use. Webflow’s mission is to bring development superpowers to everyone which includes allowing people to build the most interactive, engaging experiences on the web, and with GSAP, they can do just that.”<h3 id="expanding-the-value-of-gsap">Expanding the value of GSAP</h3>With the GreenSock acquisition, Webflow is bringing over the GSAP team and its resources. This includes a connection to GSAP’s dedicated community, which has been actively developing animation components and solutions with its capabilities. According to Tong, GreenSock shares Webflow’s vision for the future and built its company with developers and designers in mind. “GSAP will take Webflow interactions to the next level while continuing to be publicly available for all developers to use on the wider web,” she said. “Over 100,000 Webflow sites are already using GSAP through custom code, but we’re excited to soon bring the power and flexibility of the API to our users natively, within Webflow.”Over the coming months, Webflow will be integrating GSAP into the platform so all of its customers can create GSAP animations natively within platform. At the same time, GSAP will continue to be publicly available for everyone to use on the wider web. There’s also been a stated commitment by Webflow and the GSAP team to maintain and evolve the library.From a pricing perspective, Webflow is honoring current pricing plans and licensing, and as Tong says, it will be “business as usual.”It’s worth noting that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/cassie-codes/">Cassie Evans</a>, the “Lead Bestower of Animation Superpowers” at GreenSock, offered some insight into the acquisition to GSAP’s community. As she noted in her blog post, creating a GSAP GUI was an impossible pipe dream for their small team (despite all the requests for it). These join a chorus of AI tools that Webflow has already been pioneering – including connections to third-party AI apps like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jasper.ai/">Jasper</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.typeform.com/">Typeform</a>. <h4 id="webflow-ai-assistant-">Webflow AI Assistant </h4>The first is the launch of the new <a target="_blank" href="https://help.webflow.com/hc/en-us/articles/34297897805715-Webflow-AI-Assistant-overview">Webflow AI Assistant</a>, which allows team members to quickly design and generate stylized content within a site’s existing design system using conversational prompts. AI Assistant provides tools that use existing classes, variables, and site context to create on-brand drafts for review. It can also generate a full CMS item with contextually relevant content based on a simple prompt – a time saver when spinning up realistic content for new pages.  <h4 id="webflow-analyze">Webflow Analyze</h4>The company also introduced <a target="_blank" href="https://webflow.com/updates/introducing-webflow-analyze">Webflow Analyze</a>, a resource that delivers a native, unified view of visitor behavior to designers and content marketers, empowering them to make data-backed decisions that improve site performance. Analyze offers site and page insights directly within Webflow, so you don’t need to switch between tools or navigate confusing third-party dashboards. It also sports an automatic, code-free setup, which also includes automatic event capture. Unlike some other analytics tools in the market, there’s no need for manual or code-based configuration.  <figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2024/10/webflow-analyze.jpg" alt="" /></figure> Analyze is also designed with data privacy at its core, so if you have specialized consent management needs, you can integrate with your tool of choice or use Webflow's turnkey integrations with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.datagrail.io/">DataGrail</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://finsweet.com/">Finsweet</a> – with more on the way.Analyze will be available as an add-on for all customers on Basic, CMS, Business, and Enterprise Site plans this month.  <h4 id="webflow-optimize">Webflow Optimize</h4>Finally, there’s <a target="_blank" href="https://webflow.com/optimize">Webflow Optimize</a>, an AI-powered A/B testing and personalization solution. Optimize learns from site visitors in real-time, ensuring a dynamic, personalized user experience each time. It effectively maximizes conversions through rapid insights, tailored visitor experiences, and AI-powered delivery. Optimize testing gives you the ability to quickly compare variations to learn what performs best, scale your experiments, and harness AI for faster and smarter results.  <h3 id="why-it-matters">Why it matters</h3>As someone who cares a lot about visual UX – and maybe a little more about information architecture – I’m always cautious about adding too many animated whiz-bangs to a web page. This is where the sensitivity of a smart designer comes in, and knowing how much is just right.That said, animation is an area where brands can tell stories in unique ways, and Webflow’s acquisition of GSAP could be another differentiator for the budding web experience platform. Webflow continues to hold appeal for pixel-perfect aficionados that enjoy a deep level of precision and control – and GSAP’s libraries and plugins reflect a similar degree of robustness.With respect to AI, every platform – from CMS to website builders – is leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance productivity and improve efficiency. Content generation has become table stakes, but Webflow’s amplification of its analytics and optimization features is a decisive factor and demonstrates a clear focus on high-utility applications.  For Tong, this is a solid move early in her tenure as CEO. As we covered back in June of this year (only a few months ago), Webflow's founder <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/vladmagdalin/">Vlad Magdalin</a> stated that Tong would bring an “infectious energy” to her promotion from President and COO, where she oversaw the recent <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/webflow-buys-intellimize-why-its-an-intelligent-buy">acquisition of Intellimize</a>. Are we seeing the beginning of a more ambitious strategy to build out the Webflow ecosystem and drive more value through acquisitions? Hard to say, but this feels like a smart move to kick things off – and one that should serve its customers well. Choice continues to be both a challenge and an opportunity for users as they evaluate platforms to power their digital experiences. Webflow has built a strong community following and enhanced its preference among agencies. These features could give it a pivotal edge as it looks to grow in 2025, particularly as it focuses more on large-scale enterprises that crave this flexibility to power their marketing teams.Who knows? <hr /> For brands in any industry, competing on price can be a slippery slope. In some cases, it’s an elevator to the bottom floor – even an indicator of broader commoditization.There’s a case to be made for aggressively grabbing market share if conditions are ripe, like when products are experiencing higher-than-average churn or delivering a poor experience. Sometimes, buyers might already be looking to upgrade to an alternative and simultaneously trim the bottom line. If the timing’s right, a deep discount can lead to quick wins.For <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/contentstack">Contentstack</a>, the stars are apparently lining up for an ambitious play on price, and they’re throwing down the gauntlet. Yesterday, the composable digital experience platform and enterprise <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/what-is-a-content-management-system-cms">headless CMS</a> announced its new <a target="_blank" href="https://explore.contentstack.com/retire-the-legacy">“Retire the Legacy” offer</a>. The program is pointed at brands that feel trapped in their legacy CMS solutions and are struggling with long-standing technical debt entrenched in their marketing tech stacks. “Retire the Legacy” provides a sort of life ring for customers struggling to stand out amidst a brand relevancy crisis – something I’ve spoken about with <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/contentstack-raises-57-5-million-in-series-b-round-qa-with-ceo-neha-sampat">Neha Sampat</a>, Contentstack’s founder and CEO, in multiple interviews. This program aims to de-risk the move to a modern DXP for new customers, helping them mitigate the barriers in a meaningful way. "We speak with hundreds of customers every month who are regularly disappointed by their legacy, monolithic CMS," Sampat noted. “These brands want to modernize, but they feel stuck, technologically and contractually. We're taking this all off the table, betting on ourselves and on the power of our technology to reimagine possible for these customers.”Not only is Contentstack banking on its value proposition as a leading composable DXP to move the needle for brands, but it’s also suggesting that customers who move to their platform can reduce their current license fees by 50%.That’s a big number. And, as you might guess, requires a bit of qualification. First, the “Retire the Legacy” offer only applies to customers who have existing DX implementations using <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/adobe-experience-manager">Adobe Experience Manager</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/sitecore">Sitecore</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://docs.oracle.com/en/cloud/paas/content-cloud/headless-cms.html">Oracle</a>. There are also explicit terms and conditions, which require attending a demo by December 31st, 2024. You can mull through some of the other T’s &amp; C’s <a target="_blank" href="https://explore.contentstack.com/retire-the-legacy">on their website</a>. Look, platforms are under increasing pressure to grow, particularly when there are expectations from investors to drive returns. It's not a shocker that this trifecta of specific competitors is the focus of this program (they are, indeed, legacy platforms). It tells us a lot about how Contentstack is reading the tea leaves across the competitive landscape, and where they see potential opportunity.Will a deal like this shake enough trees? Here are some things to consider.<h3 id="helping-brands-get-“unstuck”">Helping brands get “unstuck”</h3>Contentstack has consistently framed the existential ecosystem challenges over the last year. Its case is quite clear: brands are mired in the muck, trying to remain relevant in a market of fleeting loyalty, particularly in digital commerce and retail. In my last discussion with Sampat, we even touched on the state of physical stores as businesses drift towards digital. I recommend checking out a few of the recent <a target="_blank" href="https://cocktailsand.substack.com/p/second-serves-a-great-low-abv-cocktail">Cocktails &amp; Commerce</a> newsletters for some sobering stats (see what I did there?)We all know that consumers are being profusely bombarded with marketing detritus from every direction, and standing out is becoming increasingly difficult. Based on one metric from Contentstack, 90% of markets have seen their digital channels lose effectiveness. That’s a hit – and an urgent call to action.To compete in this digital-first world, brands have to deliver dynamic, personalized experiences that are automated and augmented by high-value AI applications. Additionally, marketers can’t be hamstrung by development – they need to be nimble and agile. By answering this call with the right blend of flexibility and scalability, Contentstack is codifying its value by giving brands more control over their destiny.<h3 id="the-whole-enchilada-for-half-the-cost?-">The whole enchilada for half the cost? </h3>With its “Retire the Legacy” program, Contentstack is putting its money where its mouth is – betting on its people, processes, and technology to deliver a sustainable outcome with 50% savings on existing licensing fees. On one hand, it speaks to their well-earned confidence. On the other, depending on the terms of a legacy licensing agreement (this is where the terms and conditions come in), it presents obvious risks. There are multiple dimensions to any deployment; my guess is that they’ve analyzed exactly how to eat the enchilada from every conceivable direction.At the core of its value play is the company’s headless CMS, which has been infused with a wide range of capabilities to support the needs of marketers. This includes some dynamite <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/seeing-in-a-headless-world-contentstack-introduces-new-visual-building-capabilities-for-marketers">visual building capabilities</a> – which we covered last month – buoyed by an API-first, cloud-native <a target="_blank" href="https://machalliance.org/mach-technology">MACH architecture</a>. This enables everything from personalization to <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/contentstack-fires-up-brand-relevant-ai-powered-personalization-at-contentcon-2024">brand-aware GenAI</a> to enhanced automation and workflows.Underneath it all is the company’s signature <a target="_blank" href="https://www.contentstack.com/customer-care">“No-fail Promise,”</a> part of its Care Without Compromise platform. Powered by people, knowledge-based programs, and a bevy of resources, these vital structures have earned Contentstack a 98% customer satisfaction rating and a 97% customer retention rate. Those are gloat-worthy figures.This dedicated commitment to success is serving them well. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jguthmann/">Jasmin Guthmann</a>, Head of Contentstack’s corporate communication, states in a video on the site that supporting customers on every step of their composable journey is “just how we operate.” The proof is clear in Contentstack’s numerous success stories with global brands. <figure class="media"><div data-oembed-url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NZ9keroA5A"><div style="position:relative;padding-bottom:100%;height:0;padding-bottom:56.2493%"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-NZ9keroA5A" style="position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;top:0;left:0" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></div></figure> <h3 id="so-what’s-the-real-deal-with-this-deal?">So what’s the real deal with this deal?</h3>I mentioned commoditization in the very beginning. “The Great Rebalancing” has cometh, and most platforms in our market have become… well, universal in what they offer (I guess that word is catching on). It doesn’t mean they do it all, or that everything is in perfect parity. I'd be suspicious of any platform making that claim, and I prefer messaging that clearly details what a product is as much as it isn't. But between the plethora of visual builders, headless capabilities, hosting, etc… many of the pure categorical differentiators have been washed away. That could make price a more pertinent factor.To further confuse the category dilemma, platforms like Contentstack have <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/forrester-dxp-wave-2023-vendor-commentary">joined the chorus of DXPs</a> on the analysts’ radars, giving them far more competitive clout in the evaluation matrix. At the same time, legacy vendors have been ebbing further into the land of composability (or a certain definition of the term). That includes Sitecore, which has been making headway with its <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/sonic-boom-sitecore-surges-past-500m-in-arr-heres-why-it-matters">XM Cloud</a>.Again, everyone’s ending up in the same place. Where does this land Contentstack? In a solid position – one where it can capitalize on the churn and disappointment that customers have with their legacy products. Even if a vendor is now offering more composable solutions, brands are looking to the future. And for many, these legacy vendors might feel like the past. It’s no mistake that we see AEM, Sitecore, and Oracle (maybe less so) in the competitive crosshairs. They’re big targets, but also the ones fighting their own legacy tech and the old paradigms around licensing. We’re not seeing this offer volleyed at open source platforms or other downstream targets – just the platforms with domain over large enterprise accounts. In this sense, it’s a logical strategy.About that 50% pitch: Sure, it’s a familiar tactic. Will it work? The devil’s in the details, and I think it depends on a number of factors. The real key for Contentstack is selling outcomes and focusing on where it shines. I’ve watched it nail its AI roadmap from the beginning, investing early in high-utility automation and rolling into <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/contentstack-fires-up-brand-relevant-ai-powered-personalization-at-contentcon-2024">brand-relevant personalization</a>.Along with its AI-boosted roadmap, bolstering the soft benefits can be critical to expressing its differentiated value. This includes that “No-fail Promise,” which provides more confidence for brands considering a <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/mach-alliance-expands-certification-scope-to-include-offerings-within-larger-vendors">MACH strategy</a> – and we know those journeys can be fraught with peril. In this regard, Contentstack has been a sort of glue for MACH stacks, where performance accountability is often an open-ended question.Cutting costs is cool, and it may become a more decisive factor as economic conditions shift. But remember, buyers are smart. Odds are, they’re doing their homework, carefully weighing options beyond just the budget. Can this platform really deliver what I need? Can I compete more effectively? What exactly am I “future-proofed” for?As Contentstack’s CRO <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/todd-rathje-b606356/">Todd Rathje</a> observed, brands are entrenched in a battleground that looks nothing like it did in the decades prior. They need an experience edge, and Contentstack has been delivering that in spades and at scale. But even with those advantages, it's a crowded range with more choice – and more confusion. As such, clear is the new clever.CMS vendors have to be flexible with their licensing and pricing models. It’s the SaaS way, and composable is where the traction is. But at the end of the day, it’s really all about the value they deliver. To that end, brands need to carefully consider their goals when making their selections. I like Contentstack. It has many of the pieces it needs to make a strong case in modern composable stacks. Then you realize everyone has an opinion. It makes the whole prospect of creating a good identity feel challenging and risky. And yet, it's a vital and elemental fixture in every brand ecosystem.In an age where a logo's price has been vastly diminished (you can buy one for peanuts on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fiverr.com/">Fiverr</a> or use free tools to make one yourself), their value is conversely increasing. Why? But when done right, a refresh can reinvigorate a brand’s perception and energize a moment of change.That was clearly part of the calculus for the <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/mach-alliance-expands-certification-scope-to-include-offerings-within-larger-vendors">MACH Alliance</a> this week. The not-for-profit industry body – dedicated to advocating for open, best-of-breed technology ecosystems – just unveiled its refreshed identity to the world. Along with the updated mark, which still manages to evoke some “quirkiness” while growing up (more on that in a bit), the Alliance revealed an updated mission statement that reflects its steadfast commitment as composable stewards for enterprises making the journey to MACH.In tandem, the Alliance announced several key initiatives to strengthen its position as a technology leader and reflect the maturity of MACH and composability across the broader market. As MACH technologies become a strategic mandate for more business leaders, the Alliance is staying in lockstep, dedicating its resources to supporting wider adoption around business considerations.To that end, the Alliance has elected a new board that includes its first business leader Chairperson: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobhowland/">Bob Howland</a>. As the former Chief Digital Officer at Dawn Foods, Howland will head up the Alliance’s Executive Board, providing the organization with external perspective to help bolster its strategy, align priorities, and reinforce its accountability and expectations as a neutral industry body.“The MACH Alliance is at a key inflection point,” Howland said. “These appointments and new mission and vision reflect the organization’s understanding that MACH principles are no longer radical but an established approach to enterprise business. Composability and MACH are the new norm, and the MACH Alliance must step up and support businesses to not only leverage but embrace the opportunity.”<h3 id="new-leaders-join-seasoned-board-members">New leaders join seasoned board members</h3>As part of this news package, the Alliance announced four appointments to its Executive Board, representing diverse backgrounds in both business and technology. Board members are staunch evangelists and ambassadors of MACH, vocalizing its benefits of open and transformative composable architectures. The Alliance board includes nine seats, with each appointee elected for two-year terms. Members went through a comprehensive nomination process that began in August, culminating with voting in September. The new board held its inaugural meeting in Chicago last week.In addition to Howland’s appointment as Chairperson, <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/the-future-is-composable-a-conversation-with-new-mach-alliance-president-casper-rasmussen">Casper Rasmussen</a> – global SVP at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.valtech.com/en-us/">Valtech</a> – was re-elected to the board and will remain as president of the Alliance. Suffice it to say, the 1.0 version captured the zeitgeist of the composable movement as it roared on the scene. It was irreverent, disruptive, a little pedestrian, and reflected a rebellious spirit that crystallized its intent. There was also an organic fluidity and a humanizing quality that counterbalanced its representation of tech. All unique attributes of a memorable mark. <figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:48.51%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2024/10/mach-alliance-1.png" alt="" /></figure> At the same time, I recall some voices that “mocked” the MACH styling, suggesting it was too cavalier for a professional organization. That might have played into some of the decision-making as it introduced its new graphical solution.To be clear, it's not a wholesale transformation; the colors have been maintained, and other dimensions of the brand template are intact. Does the refreshed text make it a bit more predictable? To a degree. At its core, it feels more “tech conventional,” normalized from a radical state. On the plus side, this renders the logo more legible than its predecessor. The edges are sharper and stronger, and the whole mark evokes maturity. While it's a far cry from its previous skin, it still manages to be a little funky with its interconnected typography. But here’s where it shines: the configuration embodies composability. The letters represent an amalgam of diverse geometries orchestrated by uniform typography. And that might be exactly the right blend of visual flare to reflect where the Alliance is in its lifecycle: a place where business and technology considerations are coexisting and even thriving.I didn't intend to get hyper-analytical about logo aesthetics. But again, there's more value and subtext here than we might realize. It's evident that a lot of careful thought and creativity went into this transformation, even if it meant departing from a well-established identity. It's also worth reminding ourselves that change is always uncomfortable. It should shift us, force us to reexamine things. With this brand refresh, it’s clear that the MACH Alliance is aiming to do just that – while maintaining aspects of a legacy that ignited growth.In a digital ecosystem where many software platforms and products are embracing composability, this grand experiment – born from a place of disruption – is looking for new ways to deliver guidance, expertise, and value. And of course, evoke trust while remaining relevant to its members and the market. There's more to it than a logo. Bringing business stakeholders into the mix further reinforces the Alliance's commitment to growing beyond its original charter. In our corner of the CMS and DXP verses, content creators have benefitted from enhanced productivity and efficiency with the introduction of in-app tools and workflows powered <a target="_blank" href="https://openai.com/">primarily by OpenAI</a>.But it’s not just the foundational tools. The entire spectrum of plugins, extensions, and even dev environments have integrated some measure of GenAI into their offerings. Even elemental WYSIWYG editors <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/tinymce-brings-advanced-ai-to-cms-text-editing-interview-with-fredrik-danielsson-elise-bentley">like TinyMCE</a> – used by several CMSes – have woven GenAI capabilities into their offerings.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.netlify.com/">Netlify</a> – the modern web development platform – has also joined the automation chorus, announcing the addition of an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.netlify.com/blog/introducing-ai-assisted-publishing">AI-Assisted Publishing</a> feature for marketers and content creators that simplifies the tedious task of managing adjustments to headless or even traditional CMSes.  Part of the solution rests with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.netlify.com/platform/create/">Netlify’s Visual Editor</a>, which further codifies the expansion of these tools for composable architectures. Developers can write functions in the same manner as other serverless functions to initiate processes. But not all content is created equally, nor does it start life in the same place. Many of us still begin outside the CMS, using more foundational authoring tools to write press releases or blog posts before moving into an environment that allows formatting and publishing as a web page. As such, Netlify is further bridging the gap between ideation and publication. Netlify Unveils AI-Assisted Publishing and Other Enhancements at Netlify Compose 2024 Conference

<hr /> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fedramp.gov/">FedRAMP</a> is one of those squashed-together government acronyms that most laypeople will never be privy to. It stands for the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, which empowers agencies to use modern cloud technologies to securely handle federal information – which, as you can imagine, is some of the most sensitive data in the world. FedRAMP has been somewhat of an enigma for CMS and DXP software solutions and how they’re hosted. Don’t get me wrong, there are a plethora of compliance requirements platforms already wrestle with satisfying (think about the rise of <a target="_blank" href="https://oag.ca.gov/privacy/ccpa">CCPA</a> or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/index.html">HIPAA</a>). Brightspot Shines with New Version of CMS, Doubling Productivity with Expanded Integrations and AI Features 

<hr /> The MACH Alliance has always maintained a fiery passion for challenging the status quo and tearing down walls. Its zeal has been reflected in the championing of composability and a persistent quest for open, best-of-breed technology ecosystems. Since its founding in 2020, the organization has also become an ambassador for change within the “human” architectures of technology organizations, specifically around the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This commitment is manifested in the Alliance's core values and expressed in the development of programs and resources to help guide technology companies to a more meaningful posture around social responsibility, sustainability, and DEI. Initiatives like the <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/women-in-machs-2023-flagship-event-plans-to-go-beyond-boundaries-in-madrid">Women in MACH</a> program best exemplify its motivations, elevating the voices of women across their MACH membership community and serving as a template for the broader technology landscape.Last week, the not-for-profit advocacy group introduced a new resource to help tech companies gain clarity and divine actionable insight for improving their DEI efforts. <a target="_blank" href="https://machalliance.org/deib-maturity-assessment">The Women in MACH DEIB Scoring Tool</a> is a novel solution designed to accurately measure, track, and improve an organization’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging – specifically in the MACH space. That last piece about “belonging” is a differentiated aspect of the tool’s ethos. While not a new addition to the traditional DEI TLA (three-lettered acronym), belonging has gained traction in certain corners of organizational culture. <a target="_blank" href="https://deib-rise.ctb.ku.edu/deib-understanding-diversity-equity-inclusion-and-belonging/">A number of universities</a>, for example, have been spearheading the evolution of DEI and wrapping the concept of belonging into their toolboxes. In this vertical use case, belonging speaks to an individual student or faculty member’s perceived sense of connectedness and the feeling of being accepted, respected, and valued by their peers and community.The same holds true for employees at tech companies, where belonging has taken on a new imperative within the DEI rubric. Measuring how an organization supports and engages with team members is becoming a key component for reinforcing the well-being of its people, which ultimately translates into better performance and outcomes. HR departments are embracing more of an intersectional lens to support employee growth, and adding belonging to the classic DEI methodology is becoming an important part of an evolving strategy.  While many enterprises have invested in DEI – including the appointment of dedicated executive leadership – there is still significant work to be done. It does this by providing an easy-to-use online survey that collects, aggregates, and scores your results in a neutral manner. It then prescribes actionable resources in the form of best practices and strategies.As Rabea Tamm noted, the DEIB Scoring Tool will be completely free for members of the MACH Alliance. This is a big benefit given that comparable products in the market can sometimes be quite expensive. For example, research tools <a target="_blank" href="https://www.qualtrics.com/support/employee-experience/creating-ee-project/common-use-cases-ee/diversity-equity-inclusion-solution/">like Qualtric's XM Platform</a> provide granular capabilities for tracking DEI metrics but require some pricey commitments.Downstream from more robust enterprise solutions, an organization could certainly launch its own DEI survey via marketing apps like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/">Survey Monkey</a> (they have an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/toolkit/dei-leader/">existing DEI template</a> for this specific use case). The problem? It would lack the industry focus and MACH-centric intimacy the Alliance brings to the table.  Leaders within the Women in MACH program were motivated to implement a DEIB scoring tool that served its MACH membership. Given the available options, it became abundantly clear that a homegrown solution was the way to go.“When looking at the existing DEIB tools, we were underwhelmed,” said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jguthmann/">Jasmin Guthmann</a>, Executive Board Member of the MACH Alliance and Sponsor of Women in MACH. “The expensive ones didn't deliver enough value, and the free tools were weak. We didn't want to wait for change – we rolled up our sleeves and built our own. Because of a world without accessible, actionable DEIB insights? And if we’re being honest, most of us would prefer to skirt participation (unless we’re over the moon or have an axe to grind). The fact that this is kind of enjoyable is a testament to its design and structure: the app’s UX is elegant, and the content is light-hearted and engaging. Everything is easy to navigate, and there’s a progress bar at the bottom that shows you exactly where you are in the flow – making it feel less cumbersome to complete. Specific attention is paid to an organization’s maturity around substantive and declarative foundations for their DEI platforms, including questions about disability and neurodiversity statements. This might feel like table stakes, but many organizations still don’t have these DEI mechanisms built into their code of conduct or accompanied by any real enforcement. ESG is something of a hot potato in our current business and political climate, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ucem.ac.uk/whats-happening/articles/criticism-of-esg/">drawing criticism</a> from certain corners of the private and public sectors. To be fair, some of the feedback is relevant, particularly around its lack of standardized measurement or value-based results.Despite its naysayers, forward-thinking companies are taking a clear stand to be better citizens of the world by engaging in more sustainable practices. In fact, <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/umbraco-publishes-annual-impact-report-reinforcing-commitments-to-sustainability-and-community">CMS vendors like Umbraco</a> are publishing reports on this topic, providing transparency and reinforcing their commitments.One highly relevant area of the survey deals with paid family and special leave care. This is a major topic across geographies, but also one coming under scrutiny in the U.S. presidential race, particularly around working families and affordable child care. More proactively, the survey also asks if there are mental health resources on staff, which might be reserved for large enterprises but could also manifest in third-party services.<h3 id="tallying-up-the-score">Tallying up the score</h3>Before submitting your survey, you have a chance to review and edit your full scope of replies. The graphic can be downloaded and shared publicly to promote your organization’s MACH DEIB achievement.<figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:36.36%"><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2024/09/deib-badge-large.png" alt="" /></figure>For participants who still have work to do (and let’s face it, we can all do better), the tool provides guidance in the form of a DEIB Playbook. The idea is to develop pathways for improvement that lead to rescoring and ultimately earning a “Mature” status. Like any survey, there are a few things that could be augmented or streamlined. While this tool might appeal to multiple roles within an organization, it’s clear that DEI, HR, and cultural agents might be the most keen on its potential. For anyone outside those walls, it would be helpful to feature informational prompts within the survey itself – like what formalized Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) might encompass. Stuff that's easily Googled, BTW. Aside from that, it’s a very lightweight experience, focusing on the most pertinent challenges relevant to DEIB success through a MACH lens – and delivering relevant, enlightening, and actionable results. <h3 id="why-it-matters">Why it matters</h3>In 2023, I attended a conference where <a href="casper%20aagaard%20rasmussen">Casper Rasmussen</a>, Global SVP at Valtech and (at the time) President of the MACH Alliance, guided an interactive discussion on social responsibility.Throughout his talk, Rasmussen hammered home a simple mantra: “It's not just what's best for me, but best for we.” This seemed to wrap neatly around his call for modern businesses to make strong commitments to being open, sustainable, and “future fit” around goals that aren’t just commercially motivated.What stayed with me was a comment from an attendee that surfaced during the open forum. I’m paraphrasing, but this individual reflected a level of anxiety around progressive programs – particularly those within ESG – suggesting that they sounded good, but only if the current economics permitted such an investment. Said more plainly: if a recession were impacting tech and the broader market, these kinds of programs would be out the window.Is that the reality?Perhaps it has been – but it shouldn’t be. That mindset represents the easy path, not the right one. The fact is, we have far more to gain by embedding sustainability, diversity, and equality into our business practices at a fundamental level.Over the years, I’ve taken a keen interest in the Women in MACH program because it’s doing great work. But more importantly, it needs allies – particularly from those of us who are white, cisgender males in an industry where we have dominated leadership roles. Likewise, technology businesses need allies to guide the shape and direction of these investments. Having tools to codify progress and achievement is one way to reinforce the bedrock, especially if those systems are purpose-built for the industry and available in an open source vein.To be clear, women have fought to achieve so much. But as we saw at the MACH Two conference last year, the vast majority of attending companies were still represented by men. This resulted in a public challenge to include more diversity across the ecosystem. As the new DEIB Scoring Tool queries in the survey: Do you have an underrepresented group as part of your executive team? If not, what are you willing to do about it?While the MACH Alliance’s new tool is a terrific resource for auditing your posture, it’s far from being a panacea. It reminds me of how companies might use Siteimprove or Monsido to scan their websites for accessibility – it's a great first step, but real accessibility requires more humans in the loop, and a philosophical and cultural approach to design, implementation, and continued maintenance of their digital experiences. In other words, a tool is just the beginning. It’s what you do with it that matters.I previously mentioned the urgent need for “allies.” Perhaps it’s fitting that these programs are coming from an industry “alliance” within the MACH community, where diverse technologies – and people – find harmony. MACH Alliance Empowers Gender Equality with New Women in MACH DEIB Scoring Tool

Like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPDUDPCttfc">Steph Curry</a> from the three-point line.The reason is clear: we’ve got too much stuff dribbling on our digital courts. Handling the “brand ball” across distributed global teams, remote workers, and diverse channels is getting increasingly complex. As such, many organizations are often one foul away from using the wrong asset or publishing outdated product details – and that's a ticket to a losing game. Digital Asset Management (DAM) and its co-captain, Product Information Management (PIM), have been winning solutions to this problem of scaling content. While neither category is new to the roster, they’re continuing to prove their relevance as digital content grows. And grows. DAMs and PIMs are like different players on the same team. Both perform well in their respective positions and are quite closely aligned, stoking collaboration and ensuring consistency (you know, picking and rolling in the paint). If you’re not familiar with the distinctions, DAMs manage things like images, videos, and documents; PIMs are used to maintain stores of product information. As one might guess, they indeed overlap in discrete areas, but they miss a shot or two based on their focus. Typically, an organization combines brand assets from a DAM and product details from its PIM, relying on integrations to compile and print on various frontends like websites or apps. One thing they do have in common is rapid transformation with AI. The last two years have seen the addition of AI-driven tools and features like automated workflows, tagging, and more, all designed to help users and organizations streamline their digital operations.Having both DAM and PIM features more closely aligned – along with AI's force-multiplying effects – would certainly benefit large enterprises with vast digital caches of assets and product data. Now, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.canto.com/">Canto</a>, a preeminent DAM software provider, is expanding its footprint to do just that.Yesterday, the company announced that it has acquired industry rival <a target="_blank" href="https://www.imagerelay.com/">Image Relay</a>, a Vermont-based SaaS company that’s been doing novel work to unify digital asset management and product information management. The combination could be a game changer as Canto executes its vision to revolutionize the way businesses mine value from their digital content. Canto has been on its own shooting streak: just last year, the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.canto.com/press-releases/canto-merlinone/">acquired another competitor, MerlinOne,</a> as it looked to inorganically scale its AI capabilities. For a company with three decades of experience in the DAM game, Canto is certainly looking to grow its fan base aggressively. Let's unpack it a little further. <h3 id="betting-big-on-the-digital-content-explosion">Betting big on the digital content explosion</h3>When I say DAM is worthy of a Steph Curry allusion, then the swish should be audible from the stands – and by all accounts, it is. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/digital-asset-management-market">According to Grand View Research</a>, the global Digital Asset Management market size was valued at over $4.2 billion in 2023, with a projected CAGR of 16.2% from 2024 to 2030.As I previously stated, this is primarily attributed to the proliferation of remote work and distributed teams – thanks in part to a little bug called COVID – which has accelerated the adoption of DAM technology. With more employees working from various locations, cloud-based DAM solutions swept in as a secure pipeline for accessing digital assets from anywhere. The benefits are exceedingly clear. With a DAM, disparate users and teams can collaborate seamlessly and respond faster to shifting dynamics, specifically in fields like marketing, media, and e-commerce – industries where immediate access to up-to-date assets can impact campaign effectiveness and customer engagement.Driving most of the attention and focus on DAMs is the rapid expansion of digital platforms and the rise of omnichannel marketing. As consumers move more fluidly across interconnected screens and devices, brands are seeking just-in-time solutions to meet buyers at every doorstep with cohesive messaging. This has resulted in swollen silos of digital content, packed with images, videos, PDFs, rich media, and more – and an onslaught of AI-generated substance to supply personalization and experimentation goals. To meet this surge, enterprises are now straddled with immense digital content creation needs, which require efficient structural, storage, and retrieval solutions. At the same time, vendors like Widen have been eaten by DXPs like <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/acquia">Acquia, </a>which provide integrated offerings out-of-the-box. These are appealing to large enterprises looking for scalable, reliable solutions designed to work with a broader ecosystem of purpose-built technologies.Go across the market, and you see macro platforms like <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/optimizely">Optimizely</a> tethering their DAM technologies with broader <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/optimizely-leads-gartners-2024-mq-for-content-marketing-platforms-as-more-dxps-join-the-game">Content Marketing Platform (CMP)</a> capabilities, reflecting the enterprise's focus on truly integrated solutions that accelerate and scale their marketing initiatives. Go downstream and<a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/what-is-a-content-management-system-cms"> headless CMS</a> platforms like <a target="_blank" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/directus">Directus</a> are tacking on their own DAM solution with bring-your-own storage capabilities. All this choice is great, but confusion is a blocker to greatness. In the analysis and evaluation, brands have to be concerned with the ease of use, accuracy, reliability, and ultimately the control that comes with the selection of a DAM or PIM – or both. The need is compelling, but organizations require a clear vision and roadmap to truly unlock the value of such a critical decision.There's also the question of industry scale. Right now, the largest portion of DAM adoption is in media, with the addressable U.S. market leading the revenue share. But factor in the rising potential in vectors like healthcare and manufacturing, and the possibilities for more targeted DAM and PIM solution sets could further balloon. Slam DAM Dunk: Canto Acquires Image Relay, Plans to Align DAM and PIM Features

<hr /> What does it mean to be “The Friendly CMS”?I don’t ask to be coy or sarcastic. This tagline has reached legendary status at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/umbraco">Umbraco</a>, permeating its messaging for years. There’s clearly something sticky about it. In the most reductive sense, one might conclude it’s a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/what-is-a-content-management-system-cms">content management system</a> that’s easy to use. Or, as the mantle suggests, “user-friendly.” But that’s too one-dimensional. Lots of platforms could claim user-friendliness. That’s why Umbraco has infused this tagline with more gusto, and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://umbraco.com/about-us/values/why-the-friendly-cms/">there’s an origin story</a> that sheds more light on the subject. According to mythology, “The Friendly CMS” was conceived by one of Umbraco’s community members, Hudson Maul, back in 2006 (almost two decades if we’re keeping score). He included the now-famous moniker in his mockups for a new Umbraco.com website. When asked about it, he reflected: “Everything about Umbraco is friendly. The UX, the community, and the pricing.” Simple. Elegant. Universally understood. That’s what makes it sticky.I’ve followed Umbraco for many years – they’ve certainly stood the test of time – and this idea of being friendly goes far beyond the confines of its open source .NET technology. Which, by the way, continues to be a novel arrow in its quiver.Here’s the deal: being “The Friendly CMS” has as much to do with its global spirit and fiercely passionate community as its products. From what I’ve observed, Umbraco has consistently committed to being a people company first – one that endeavors to democratize its innovation, support its builders, and make a positive impact in our world.This impact is crystallized in the company’s <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/umbraco-publishes-annual-impact-report-reinforcing-commitments-to-sustainability-and-community">2024 Annual Impact Report</a>, published in April. It illustrates a fervent internal and external focus on achieving measurable strides in sustainability while nurturing a culture of diversity and inclusion at a global level. It certainly helps cement the case for being “friendly” in a palpable way. But as Hudson Maul codified, their CMS is about people, too. It’s engineered with purpose and provides a clean, clear, intuitive experience that still wins hearts and minds. For all these reasons, finding the right person to lead the next chapter of Umbraco’s story is clearly vital to its future. And it seems that <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/mats-persson-296a66/">Mats Persson</a> is, indeed, that person.  The timing couldn’t be more apropos. Umbraco has experienced triumphant growth over the last few years. With a stellar reputation, it now counts itself among the top web CMS platforms serving the UK public sector, and among <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.g2.com/best-software-companies/emea">G2’s Top 50 EMEA Companies</a>. Perhaps more importantly, Umbraco is an open source CMS, competing in a landscape of large proprietary enterprise systems, composable DXPs, and a mele of headless platforms. As it turns out, Umbraco offers solutions that can go toe-to-toe across the market, like its <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://umbraco.com/products/umbraco-heartcore/">Heartcore Headless CMS</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://umbraco.com/products/umbraco-cloud/">Umbraco Cloud</a> – all connected to a wellspring of open source to provide support, innovation, and more.As Persson steps into his new role, he faces headwinds in every direction: shrinking IT budgets, shaky economic signals, and shifting buying patterns (to name a few). And of course, there’s the continued challenge of helping buyers see the forest through the composable trees and weed out confusion. Setting the negative acoustics aside, the evolving preference for open source solutions at an enterprise level could be a real game changer for Umbraco. Being open is, after all, its bread and butter. But the real key here is Umbraco’s partners, who have closed more enterprise opportunities with its products – and Persson has his sights set on the channel to amplify growth. <h3 id="a-fond-farewell-to-the-kim-years">A fond farewell to the Kim Years</h3>There’s something about a bow tie that exudes class. And <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/umbraco-cms-acquired-by-software-investor-monterro-interview-with-ceo-kim-sneum-madsen">Kim Sneum-Madsen</a>, famous for sporting this overlooked fashion accouterment, is a class act all around.As Umbraco’s previous head of state, Sneum-Madsen embodied the friendliest attributes that have defined the company’s ethos. Since 2016, he has served as Umbraco’s eponymous “Chief Friend Maker” and provided ambassadorial duties to the community at large. In 2019, he took the reins as CEO, navigating Umbraco through the unprecedented challenges of a pandemic and its subsequent digital acceleration – a tumultuous period across the tech frontier. At that time, Umbraco had just 56 employees. In the years that followed, Sneum-Madsen grew the company substantially, tripling the headcount while focusing on scalable processes and products. This included the development of Umbraco Cloud and regional hosting services situated around the globe. During his tenure, Sneum-Madsen also facilitated several key acquisitions that strengthened Umbraco’s product offerings and developed a robust partner network. The growth spurt was also fueled by a Westward drift to the larger U.S. market, supported by a beachhead in Charlotte, NC. Fear not: Kim will remain on Umbraco’s board of directors, lending his continued knowledge to a company that is imprinted with his DNA. “Umbraco has achieved consistent, strong growth over the past two years,” said Martin Henricson, Chairman of the Board at Umbraco and Managing Director at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.monterro.com/">Monterro</a> (an investment firm that <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://umbraco.com/blog/swedish-software-growth-investor-monterro-acquires-a-majority-stake-in-umbraco/">acquired a majority stake</a> in Umbraco in 2021. “Kim believes that now is the right time to hand over the baton.”<h3 id="from-ad-tech-to-cms">From ad tech to CMS</h3>Persson will marshal thirty years of leadership experience into his new job as CEO. With a Master’s degree in computer science and a Bachelor’s in economics, he brings a unique combination of technology and financial considerations that can generate value and create sustainable growth for both early-stage and established companies.  Persson comes to Umbraco from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.cavai.com/products">Cavai</a>, where he was CEO for just over two years. An award-winning global interactive advertising cloud, Cavai works with agencies, publishers, advertisers, and other platforms across ten markets and three continents. It specializes in conversational ad tech like banners, video, and commerce solutions with a clear focus on privacy.Persson’s resume includes impressive stints in senior leadership positions at IBM and PWC, but one of his longest tenures was at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/adform/">Adform</a> – an established leader in online advertising media services. As SVP, he helped shepherd a 50% ARR and the expansion from 5 to 18 offices worldwide from 2011 to 2017, a period of accelerated growth, innovation, and rising compliance and privacy considerations in the ad tech field. <h3 id="building-on-the-open-source-advantage-">Building on the open source advantage </h3>As Umbraco’s new CEO, Persson will undoubtedly blend his extensive experience and leadership with the company’s teams, community, and partners. Based on the company’s recent traction, his roadmap will likely build on Umbraco’s diverse solutions and global expansion – all reinforced by its open-source posture. “This is a really exciting time to be joining the company,” Persson said in the company’s press release. “Umbraco has steadily grown to 150 people, with its international presence reinforced by a well-established partner network and a global community of highly-engaged open-source software contributors. Over the past thirty years of working in this industry I’ve seen that once a company reaches this size, that’s when it really gains momentum in the market.”Persson also pointed to the growing adoption of open-source software within the enterprise and public sector as an opportunity for Umbraco – specifically to build on the growth achieved in the past year and increase its international expansion. “I’ve spent decades working with proprietary software enterprises and start-ups, so I am looking forward to applying my experience within an open source CMS company that allows digital organizations the freedom to build exactly what they need,” he said. “Umbraco is also a truly international company and that’s where I bring particular value, having worked in the UK, US, and Nordics.”Along with its vigorous open source community, Persson sees Umbraco’s digital agency partner network as a force multiplier for its ambitions, and that leveraging its footprint and ability to deliver local support as decisive attributes.“Umbraco already has partners and customers throughout the EU, UK, US, Australia and New Zealand, India, Vietnam, and Nepal and I’m looking forward to helping the company to build on that global presence,” he said. “The open-source CMS platform is also highly flexible and scalable, giving customers the freedom to build digital experiences that meet evolving business needs. When we support our partners and help them to grow their business with solutions that solve customers’ problems, increase transactions, and enable transformation, everyone profits.”<h3 id="why-it-matters">Why it matters</h3>In my recent keynote Q&amp;A with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/buytaert/">Dries Buytaert</a> (the acclaimed founder of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/drupal">Drupal</a>) at the Boye &amp; Company <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.boye-co.com/conferences/cmsconnect25">CMS Connect Conference</a> in Montreal, we discussed open source at length. One of the biggest questions on the docket: why industry analysts continue to look past these CMS platforms when surveying the market for their various grids and waves (you know of whom I speak). There isn’t one answer to this conundrum. Yes, there's an explicit formula based on revenue and other metrics. But the fact is, enterprise software platforms spend big bucks to engage with analysts, thus reinforcing their visibility and, perhaps, their preference. It’s impossible to eliminate all the biases. We are, after all, only human.But open source has come a long way, and the dominance of OSS (open source software) platforms like <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/wordpress">WordPress</a> is simply undeniable. When I last spoke to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/drupal-joomla-typo3-and-wordpress-join-forces-in-new-open-website-alliance">Mathias Bolt Lesniak of the Open Alliance</a>, we discussed the ripple effect of the Swiss government’s EMBAG legislation – a law that requires public sector entities to provide their apps as OSS. EMBAG was not without controversy, and some of the biggest opponents gumming up the works were proprietary platforms. This predilection towards OSS is also manifesting in a broader movement across enterprises as more companies begin to reassess the pros of open source – instead of the entrenched cons around stability, scalability, and, of course, security. The fact is, open source tools are being used across tech stacks: Kubernetes, Docker, MySQL, Linux… the list goes on. Umbraco is an established and well-respected brand with a solid European footprint. As it looks West, there are opportunities to snare more of the addressable U.S. market – and building a stronger partner network could be key to its success. But if it can harness the market winds as they shift towards open source, there could be bigger fish on the line. Bringing on a new CEO is also a bold statement to the market, establishing Umbraco's intentions to shake things up.
