Not All Heroes Wear Capes. Here's Why CMS Is Your 'Unsung Hero' in 2025

Movable Type has announced version 5.2 of their CMS, which is now available for purchase on <a href="http://www.movabletype.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">www.MovableType.com</a>.
This new release comes with a few new features, which is sure to please existing customers. These features include a new rich text editor (based on TinyMCE), new security features and added support for PSGI and Nginx followed by VM images and new Windows Platform (Azure).
We haven't heard much from the MovableType PR team for quite some time so it's good to see they are still alive and kicking.  While still a reasonably well used platform in Japan, MovableType has lost quite a bit of it's former foothold here in North America so it's good to see they are putting the focus back on getting into the public eye here.
I've always found the platform interesting and compelling so it's good to hear they are still working on improving it and making things better. For those who prefer, there is also an open source edition which you can grab from <a href="http://MovableType.org">MovableType.org</a> as well.

There are a variety of CMS options available, ranging from ‘plugging in' to your current website to fullfledged administrative, database-driven, create-your-website-in-our-CMS options. In this post our goal is to focus on simple CMS options. Some of the options below ‘plug-in' to your current website, others require developing your site from the ground up using their CMS system. But, all of them lean towards simplicity: easy to learn and easy to use.
<h2>CushyCMS</h2>

<a href="http://www.cushycms.com">CushyCMS</a> is a great option for already developed websites. Add ‘hooks' into your website for CushyCMS to see your website. Then, access your site through CushyCMS. Editing the site becomes much like using a word processor with all the common editing icons at the top of the editing window. Want to add a new page? You can also do that through CushyCMS.
<h2>SimpleCMS</h2>

Make your site quickly editable by using <a href="http://www.simplecms.com">SimpleCMS</a>. Within minutes you can start editing your site. Enter the necessary FTP information, define your editable areas, and you are off and running.
Small icons appear next to the areas that you can edit. Simply click the icon and update the text and/or image. Images can be added to text areas simply by dragging an image into the text area. You can also add new pages.
You can save drafts till you are ready to publish. When all is done, simply click on Publish to update your live site.
<h2>Surreal CMS</h2>

<a href="http://www.surrealcms.com">Surreal CMS</a> is another CMS that plugs into your current website to give you easy editing options. Add the necessary ‘hooks' to your website, then login at SurrealCMS to update your site. The editable regions will have an icon at the top left. Simply click on the icon to open an editing window for that region.
The editing window has all the familiar icons and formatting options to easily update your site.
You can also add new pages by creating a template from a current page. Save a draft of your changes, publish your changes, or schedule date and time to publish your changes.
<h2>PageLime</h2>

<a href="http://www.pagelime.com">PageLime</a> is another simple CMS option for editing content on your website. After entering the necessary FTP information to access your site and the required CSS class, the content area of your site is editable through Page Lime. Click on the icon next to your editable region. The editable content opens in an editable window with all the common icon options at the top of the window. You can choose to save a draft or publish your changes.
PageLime also lets you create a new pages based on a current page.
<h2>Zimplit</h2>

Zimplit is a CMS that lets you create and edit sites from scratch. It requires uploading just a few files to your server, logging in, and you are off and running. It has an easy-to-use menu on the left side to add pages, change settings, and edit menus. Click within any page area to edit that area. If you want to add media to the page, simply click on the appropriate icon in the edit bar and select the type of media.

<a href="http://grabaperch.com">Perch</a> is a CMS that lets you create new websites, as well as integrate it with existing sites. Because of how it manages the content, content can easily be shared across multiple pages.
Within the admin area, drill down to the desired page or to where you want to add a page. A page can consist of multiple regions (content, sidebar, map, etc.). Edit each region is desired.
This CMS is a bit more robust than others. It requires becoming familiar with their admin interface, but with that comes more flexibility.
<h2>GetSimple CMS</h2>

It is designed for the small-site market, keeping the complexity of databases and extraneous features non-existent.

It's also easy to change color, font, border, and spacing of an area using their design options.
<h2>SilverStripe</h2>

It even comes up with very helpful standard reports for your website.

<a href="http://www.joomla.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Joomla</a>, one of the world’s most popular open-source content management systems (CMS) used for everything from websites to blogs to Intranets, today announced the immediate availability of Joomla 3.0. Along with new features such as a PostgreSQL driver, a new user interface for administrators, and a new front-end template, the Joomla CMS can now display content on mobile devices as clearly and distinctly as it does on a personal computer or Mac. This innovation makes Joomla the first major CMS that includes the Twitter Bootstrap framework that enables it to be 100 percent mobile-friendly by default. Over time, a native mobile optimization option becomes increasingly important for a Web presence as global information technology consulting firm IDC predicts that by 2015 mobile Internet will overtake desktop usage.

In this release, the goal was to make Joomla 3.0 completely mobile-friendly while still remaining recognizably Joomla. To accomplish this, Twitter Bootstrap was utilized. Bootstrap is an extensive front-end toolkit for developing websites and applications. Using Bootstrap allows Joomla to create a mobile-ready experience based on a popular framework that many other developers and designers already know and work with on a regular basis.
In total, there are more than 15 new features to Joomla 3.0. Other key features include the ability to copy a template, the option to disable the ability to change the Username in Profile and the installation of language packages directly from the extension manager, which makes it easier to manage other languages. Many of these new features have been introduced incrementally since the launch of Joomla  2.5 in January.
One of the brand new features with Joomla 3.0 is the addition of the PostgreSQL driver. This addition means that the CMS is truly database independent, as it already is integrated with MySQL and SQL Server.
Joomla 3.0 is truly a collaborative community-driven software project developed with the feedback gathered from more than 2.6 million Joomla forum posts, nearly 580,000 Joomla forum members and data from more than 9,900 Joomla extensions. Joomla 3.0 Released; Open Source Content Management System (CMS) Newly Optimized for Mobile Devices

SDL has today released a report commissioned with Forrester Consulting that explores the six disciplines that companies should follow to overcome the challenges faced when managing customer experience on a global scale. As technology enables more companies to sell to more markets more quickly, the individual customer experience becomes harder to manage. Getting the customer experience right, when product differentiation is not always clear, will be the next big challenge for global organizations.
The digital revolution, driven by the internet has permanently altered the global economy. Customers are better connected, more informed and have higher expectations from the companies they choose to buy from. In order to remain competitive in the global landscape, big businesses are beginning to understand the requirement to fulfill consumer expectations at an individual level in each of the countries in which they operate, with emerging markets now contributing about 50% of global GDP growth.
Global expansion efforts are therefore focused on getting into new markets quickly and effectively in order to maximize returns. Applying localization to global processes is not a new idea; however the Forrester research demonstrates just how challenging organizations find putting the theory into practice.
According to the research, successful global businesses use a framework approach to manage how they deliver locally relevant experiences. The framework is based around six key disciplines: customer understanding, measurement, governance, strategy, design and culture. Successful organizations that have achieved this have done so by:

In order to successfully expand into multiple markets, big businesses should look to deliver experiences that resonate with local communities through the standardization of processes, rather than output. To operate efficiently on a global scale, when 73% of internet traffic derives from non-English speaking populations, companies need to put together a set of repeatable processes. These can then be adopted by local operations, with an understanding of the customer base, culture, and language, to present a tailored solution for their local customers.
The research also highlights that, whilst executives understand the requirement to develop high-quality customer experiences in each new market, there is a misconception that customer experience is a one-off project rather than an on-going initiative. However, companies need only look to the leading global players to realize the revenue benefits that come from treating your customers with locally relevant experiences.

Global Customer Experience is the New Battleground for Business

SEO Samba have recently upgraded their CMS/Website builder, SEOToaster and we thought we'd take a look at their new release and examine the improvements. We previously shared our experiences with their tool back in 2010 and you can read that review <a href="/seotoaster-review/">here</a>.To get started, the installation process is pretty straight forward and within a few clicks, you'll be up and running with the latest version of SEOToaster CMS.Once installed, you'll be greeted with a page that contains a number of steps you can take to get started. The first step is shown below:I have a couple of issues with the way things are done with this page. First off, I noticed a spelling error with the very first paragraph on the page. As some of you know from reading my previous reviews, I've got serious issues with spelling mistakes. The issues are twofold. First, it shows poor quality control and as a result, lowers my confidence in the code and the rest of the product. Second, it's unprofessional. The word that's misspelled for those who can't tell is “Successfully” (note that it's missing the third S). To find a mistake this early on is not reassuring at all.The second issue is that I am given a rather poorly highlighted error with no instructions on how to resolve it. The error, you can see in the screenshot above, is “can not create widcard plugin. You have to install the proper loader”.  A bit vague isn't it?I checked their website (seotoaster.com) to try to find a solution to the error after Google returned no results and could not find the support section for SEOToaster CMS. I ended up scrolling to the footer of their main website, where I found a link to the forums. Assuming this would be the place to look,  I searched the forums and received no results. Frustrated, I went back to the main page and again, scrolled down to the footer to find “Q &amp; A Support” and clicked on it. I searched for the term “widcard” and finally found an article telling me I needed the IONCube Loader that the installation routine had told me was “optional” (see below):<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/seotoaster-review-4.png" />As a developer, if you are going to mark something as optional, tell the user what they will lose by not installing it so that they can make an educated decision or link to an article explaining what types of issues they will encounter when not choosing to meet the optional requirement. This will eliminate the confusion later on. Further to this, if it's going to create a confusing issue during the install routine, you are probably better off making it mandatory before proceeding.With the installation complete, I moved to the theme selection piece, which indicates that I can choose from one of their themes, download it, then reupload it back to the system and select it as a starting point. Following the instructions, I went ahead and downloaded the insurance theme thinking it was a decent starting point. To my chagrin, after uploading it and selecting it, I can't seem to get past the theme screen. Clicking done appears to do nothing and the system just sits there on the theme selection page.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/seotoaster-review-5-620x375.png" />Also, oddly, it doesn't appear to show a preview of the theme either which I found rather odd.  Given that I was unable to move past the screen, I clicked the X in the top right of the window above and was greeted with a framework of the theme but not the actual theme itself:<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/seotoaster-review-6-620x382.png" />While it serves as a structurally usable template, it defeats the purpose of having a theme preset with sample data and colors. While I am able to enter content into any of these boxes without issue and can certainly make due, we're dealing with issue after issue so far and it's not making the process easy or giving me much confidence in how the experience will be for the end user.Obviously, the installation process needs a bit of work but the bulk of the business SEO Samba does is with hosted installations which eliminates the need for an installation routine so we'll cut them a bit of slack for the issues I've encountered today.Once installed, however, it's time to get to the meat of the system which is the adding and management of content. SEO Toaster uses inline content editing and to get started, you simply click in an editable area (defined by the small colored icon in the screenshot above) and the editor launches.Here's how the editor looks:<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/seotoaster-review-10-620x381.png" />Obviously, it can handle the majority of typical formatting that you'd come to expect from a standard WYSIWYG editor but it also can be used to insert other content and widgets. To add an RSS widget to a content area for example, you simple fill out the widget details and click apply.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/seotoaster-review-11-620x382.png" />Once you've got the widget details entered, click Save Content and you'll see the end result:<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/seotoaster-review-12.png" />A cool thing about this RSS feed widget is that it cycles the content with a slider motion so that the most recent 5 items from the RSS feed are each displayed. It's hard to show via a screenshot but just trust me that it looks cool, ok? ?Headers are defined by an H icon and clicking on those gives you a simple text entry box that you can type your header into:<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/home-google-chrome_2012-09-24_11-38-48.png" alt="SEO Toaster Review" />Once you click save, it's instantly updated. Pretty simple isn't it?The bulk of the work you'll do with SEO Toaster is via the inline content editor or the collapsible menu that floats to the right of the screen when logged in. I particularly enjoyed the naming of the menu items under the media menu:<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/home-google-chrome_2012-09-24_11-44-02.png" alt="SEO Toaster Review" />To add images, simply click on the aptly named “Upload things” menu item and you'll be presented with the following image upload window:<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/home-google-chrome_2012-09-24_11-46-07.png" alt="SEO Toaster Review" />From here, you would either select a destination folder for your images, or create a new one and choose the files to upload. The whole process is quite quick and took a few seconds. Now, to add any of the images you've just uploaded to a content area, simply click and launch the inline content editor, select your folder, the size of image you want to insert and the image itself from the preview thumbnail and you are done.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/home-google-chrome_2012-09-24_11-53-30-620x382.png" alt="SEO Toaster Review" />As you can see, adding content and widgets to come up with a unique design is very simple and straight forward and definitely where SEO Toaster shines. Working with the system, I encountered no issues or speed concerns and everything was snappy and worked well.In the SEO section of the menu you are able to do a number of things including editing your robots.txt file, adding 301 redirects, creating deeplinks and sculpting.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/home-google-chrome_2012-09-24_11-57-04.png" />You can learn more about the various SEO options available and how they work from here: <a target="_blank" href="http://www.seotoaster.com/seo-website-design.html">http://www.seotoaster.com/seo-website-design.html</a>. They are a bit advanced for me to go through in this review but I will say that there are plenty of great options that can be integrated with SEO Toaster and they are well implemented.If you are a developer or a coder, you'll be happy to know that SEO Toaster provides full editing functionality for your templates and CSS including line numbering. To edit, simply click on the layout section and choose either edit template or edit CSS.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/home-google-chrome_2012-09-24_12-01-42-620x374.png" alt="SEO Toaster Review" />Under the “Other” menu item, you can change basic configuration settings including the default media sizes, email settings and more.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/home-google-chrome_2012-09-24_12-04-24.png" />Perhaps one of the best features that potential users will be interested in hearing about are the plugins that SEO Toaster has available. Under the plugins menu, you'll be presented with a good number of great plugins that help extend the functionality of the system such as:<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/home-google-chrome_2012-09-24_12-06-55-620x374.png" alt="SEO Toaster Review" />You'll note that on this page, the system does actually warn you about the IonCube Loader not being installed. For most people, you'll want to either ensure it's installed or use their hosted service. For this review, installing the loader wasn't something that could be done quickly and easily so I chose to skip it. As you can see, there are some pretty amazing plugins available including a variety of payment modules for eCommerce use. This is great news for those looking to use the system to create a store or sales page. There is also an eCommerce version of SEO Toaster coming soon which will likely implement things much better but for the interim, there are definitely some options.Not all of these plugins are free, some are available on a month to month payment basis or for a onetime fee but hey, a company has to make money somewhere and it's good to see there are a number of options to choose from, including how to pay.Overall, SEO Toaster is a pretty simply and straight forward CMS. I'd almost prefer to call it a website builder but since you can download it and host it locally, it's kind of a blend between the two. Installation process aside, it's easy to use, has a slick and simple interface that even the most inexperienced user could get used to within a few minutes and offers plenty of ways to extend the functionality of your site.If you are in the market for a simple to use CMS that makes getting a page online quick and easy, SEO Toaster just might be something to consider. Kentico 7 Simplifies Mobile Development and Adds Marketing Automation

A new version of CMS Made Simple (CMSMS) has been released. This new release, 1.11.2, is a bugfix release that smooths out some of the issues introduced with 1.11.

CMS Made Simple 1.11.2 Released

<a href="http://www.dotnetnuke.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">DotNetNuke Corp.</a>, the company behind the most widely adopted Web Content Management Platform for Microsoft .NET, today announced a two year compounded annual growth rate of 103% for the period ending 2011. The company began licensing its Professional Edition product offering in 2009. DotNetNuke Corp. continued its strong growth in 2012, ending the second quarter with a 42% increase over first quarter 2012. The worldwide customer base for commercial products grew to over 2,000 during the same period. Customer loyalty also remained high, with a monthly churn of less than 1%. The number of commercial applications distributed through the DotNetNuke Store rose to over 10,000 apps and design templates. The DotNetNuke open source community also grew substantially, now powering over 700,000 production web sites worldwide and more than 1 million registered community members.
In November 2011, DotNetNuke tripled attendance at the company’s annual user conference. DNN World 2012, which will be held in Orlando, Florida from October 10 – 12, is on track to be the largest DotNetNuke event to date.
In addition to realizing strong growth across all customer segments, DotNetNuke’s commercial products have been implemented at an accelerated rate by federal, state and local government agencies, including the United States Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. The company plans to unveil DNN 7.0, a major upgrade to the DotNetNuke platform, at DNN World. Here's a quick summary of the changes:

<li>Fix an issue where a theme may not preview correctly, or its screenshot may not be displayed.</li>
<li>Improve plugin compatibility with the visual editor.</li>

<li>Prevent improperly sized header images from being uploaded.</li>

The main goal of the 2.6 series is to update the XOOPS Core and all classes to PHP 5.4, refactor old legacy code and separate all HTML code from PHP.
