What I Mean to Say: A Practitioner Perspective on AI, Semantics, and Content Evolution

Webnodes AS, a company developing an ASP.NET based semantic content management system, today announced the release of version 3.5 of their CMS. The new release improves the system in a number of key areas.
Improvements in the semantic definitions module The semantic definitions module enable a user to define a semantic ontology. When the ontology has been created, the system creates an object model that reflects the ontology defined. The semantic content is then accessed using the built-in ORM. In this new version of the CMS, the module has been thoroughly updated making it much easier to use, while adding a number of powerful features.
E-commerce module This is the first version of Webnodes CMS that includes the long-awaited e-commerce module. You will now be able to benefit from the semantic content technology in the core framework when creating your e-commerce sites. One of the core design goals behind the e-commerce module (and Webnodes CMS in general) is scalability. The module is designed to work for both small web shops and large e-commerce sites, meaning that it must be quick and easy to use for small projects, but also flexible and extensible enough to work well for more complex needs.
Content links mini viewer. When building websites with semantic content, the structure of a site is not only hierarchical, as in most traditional websites, but the content forms a semantic network, with many different relations between the different content elements. In this new version, a small content links viewer is displayed in the main content module to give editors a better overview of what the current content node is related to, without opening the full content links browser.
Rounded corners and borders on images Webnodes CMS already has an industry leading image handling technology built into the system, but this release includes a number of useful additions and improvements. Rounded corners can now be applied to images for a fraction of the effort normally required. The image handling engine can now also add borders to images.

Since the Joomla 1.6 beta 8 release on August 23, we have fixed approximately 69 issues in the tracker. This progress is directly related to the continued efforts of the Joomla! Bug Squad. Thanks for all your hard work in bringing us one increment closer to stable!

Joomla 1.6 Beta 9 Now Available

Alfresco software, the leader in open source enterprise content management (ECM), has been named to IDG InfoWorld’s annual list of the Best Open Source Software, known as the Bossie awards. This represents Alfresco’s third Bossie inclusion in the last four years and comes on the heels of continued innovation to the company’s content management platform over the last year.

Alfresco Honored in InfoWorld’s Best of Open Source Software Awards

Georg-Christian Pranschke from http://www.sensepost.com/ discovered a vulnerability in Elgg that could potentially allow SQL injection attacks using crafted URLs or POSTs. Versions 1.7.3 and 1.6.3 correct this and are highly recommended for all Elgg users.
1.7.3 also includes additional bugfixes for problems found in 1.7.2:

<li>Entering an invalid captcha now forwards to the referring page instead of the front page.</li>
<li>“Edit details” and “Edit profile icon” only show up on user's own profile.</li>

Magnolia, the open source content management vendor that delivers simplicity on an enterprise scale, today announced that it was honored with the Swiss Open Source Contribution Award for the worldwide success of its content management system based on international standards, and for its open relationship with customers, partners, and the development community.
The jury of experts from the Swiss Open Systems User Group in Zurich evaluated contestants for open standards, economic benefits, competitiveness with commercial software, and their contributions to the community.
Jury member Sebastian Spaeth, ETH Zurich, praised Magnolia for its international success, and pointed to the “clear link to the Developer's Corner on the company's homepage, and its open, ‘upstream' communication approach.” Corsin Camichel of camichel.com emphasized how Magnolia's “high quality and activity” contributed to its success.
Magnolia founders Pascal Mangold and Boris Kraft are particularly pleased with the fairness of competitor and jury member Cédric Hüsler, Director of Product Marketing for Day Software. Magnolia CMS wins Swiss Open source award

Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware has been awarded a 2010 Bossie award (Best of Open Source Software) by InfoWorld, in the Applications category. InfoWorld's Best of Open Source Software Awards (aka the Bossies) is chosen annually by Test Center editors and reviewers, and recognize the best open source software for business users.
The editors called Tiki “a powerful, integrated, Web-based application” that can “build and maintain websites, wikis, groupware, CMSes, forums, blogs, and bug trackers, as well as make them multilingual.”
The review continues, citing Tiki's “fine-grained role-based privilege system” as a differentiating factor against classic wiki models, such as MediaWiki. Who are you voting for in the Open Source Awards?

Members of the Tiki Community, including developers, end-users, advocates, will be meeting in the Big Apple from October 3-6, 2010. This TikiFest will be the last major gathering before the release of Tiki 6.
The TikiFest, a long-standing tradition of the Tiki Community, is a chance for community members (who do not normally meet) to get together, socialize, and further the development of Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware. More than 40 of these “code sprints” have been held throughout the world.
In addition to preparing for the upcoming Tiki 6 release, TikiFest New York will also planning for Tiki 7, celebrating Tiki's 8th birthday, and an open demonstration hosted by Casa Frela Gallery (details below).
Several Tiki Community members also plan to participate in Ignite Web 2.0 Expo NY (<a>http://www.web2expo.com/webexny2010/public/schedule/detail/15524</a>) and Open Video (<a>http://www.openvideoconference.org/</a>), both of which take place in New York during the TikiFest.

Tikifest New York: Countdown to Tiki 6

There are a number of great hosted CMS solutions on the market, we've highlighted a number of them in one of our recent issues of CMS Critic Recommends (<a href="/cms-critic-recommends-july-edition/">read</a>) and LightCMS is definitely a contender.LightCMS is packed with features at what we think is a reasonable price compared to other options on the market. What are it's strengths and weaknesses?Let's take a look.First off, for the average user, you may be able to make do with their free package which allows you a decent starting point to begin seeing what the system can do for you. It's a great way to try out LightCMS and decide whether you want to give it a go long-term or not.Once you've chosen your subdomain you'd like to use from their website, you are ready to get started. We chose http://cmscritic.publishpath.com (for obvious reasons).On your first visit, you are greeted with a basic website waiting for your input. You can access the main administrative interface by adding /admin to the end of your URL (ie: http://cmscritic.publishpath.com/admin) which would then prompt you to log on for access to the “dashboard”.Upon logging in, you'll be greeted with a screen similar to the following (dependent upon the theme you chose):<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/sitefinity_tedkqt.jpg" alt="Initial Screen - LightCMS" /> Initial Screen – LightCMSAs you can see, a number of areas of the website became activated once you logged in. Let's take a quick look at what the interface to a form element looks like.Here's where LightCMS outdoes it's competitors. Once you have added the element for a form, you simply click on “edit form” in a drop down box within the element which will take you to the form edit screen.From within this screen, there are two tabs. Now that my friends, is very simple and very slick. It's the little things that make the difference and this is definitely one of the best and easiest to implement functions we've seen so far in a form module.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2021/07/26-08-2010-12-34-57-pm_dz9kpg.jpg" alt="Payment Options in Forms - LightCMS" />Payment Options in Forms – LightCMSNow that we've looked at the various elements and content functions of the system, let's dig a bit deeper into the administrative interface shall we?LightCMS includes the ability to manage settings on a page by page basis or on a site basis (or both).  If you wanted to set individual meta data, css, user access permissions or SSL encryption for instance, this can all be done by clicking on the Page Settings button right from the Page you are currently on. Although if we weren't paying, we'd feel kind of guilty considering the amount of work put into this system.</li></ul>Overall, LightCMS is one astoundingly agile platform. It's fast, intuitive, easy, packed full of options and VERY reasonably priced.  We highly recommend it.

LightCMS Review

The SilverStripe team have launched a free extension to SilverStripe CMS that makes it easier to build websites for mobile devices. This is a great trend we've been seeing lately and we're keeping a close eye as more and more CMS vendors move to adapt to the new mobile web.
<blockquote>Most websites now have a noticeable amount of visitors using mobile devices. We've been looking at how to make it easier to build websites that can be accessed through popular mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Google Android phones.
The result is the SilverStripe Mobile Module. Once installed, it provides out of the box functionality to render an SilverStripe CMS website using a mobile-optimised theme, with the page width, font size, and menu layout designed for a small screen.
While you can certainly use this out of the box theme, it's mainly supplied so that someone familiar with HTML and CSS can customise the theme to suit your intended look and feel.
The module also provides:

<li>Automatic detection of mobile devices so that you can automatically redirect people to a mobile-optimised website.</li>
<li>A simple GUI for configuring the module</li>

SilverStripe's templating language has meant developing mobile templates has always been possible. However, there is considerable effort in achieving cross-browser compatibility across mobile devices. The goal for this module is to reduce the time it takes people to build websites optimised for browsing by mobile devices. It's not intended to grow into a module that allows people on mobile phones to perform content authoring (although we do see that this could be useful for certain CMS tasks, like approving a request from a colleague to publish website content.)</blockquote>
At this stage, the mobile module is in beta. This means they are inviting people to download, test, and offer feedback on the module. Once they've incorporated your feedback, they hope to release the module confidently knowing that it provides website developers with a stable and useful tool for quickly creating mobile-optimised websites.

SilverStripe mobile development has just become easier

The first alpha release of TYPO3 4.5 has been announced and we're having a contest for TYPO3 developers (or users). On with the announcement:
Today, the TYPO3 community released the first alpha version of TYPO3 4.5. This marks the start of our journey to the first TYPO3 release ever to have long term support (LTS). Release 4.5.0 will be ready by January 2011. This alpha version is a “developer snapshot” to show the progress so far.
What happened so far?
After the kick-off for the 4.5 development during the TYPO3 Developer Days 2010 on July the release team consisting of Ernesto Baschny (release manager) and Steffen Kamper (technical leader) started contacting individuals and teams that were already working on projects that were planned for inclusion in 4.5.
The release team decided to hold weekly meetings together with the TYPO3 product manager (Ben van ‘t Ende) and the core team leaders. These meetings turned out to improve productivity of the team a lot.
