The content operations platform and enterprise CMS recently launched a new workflow automation engine that harnesses AI to effortlessly orchestrate content. But the story goes deeper, and Brightspot's unique approach to governance and change management is making waves in agentic transformation.

In the deepest parts of the ocean, where sunlight is a myth, it seems impossible that life exists. It’s cold. Murky. The pressure is intense. Certainly not hospitable for humans, but it doesn’t seem friendly for fish, either.

And yet, in this pitch-black “midnight zone,” a bevy of aquatic species thrive in the harsh conditions, adapting to the environment in astounding – if not downright magical – ways.

Take the anglerfish, one of the more fascinating examples of what flourishes in this hidden realm. They’re bony, carnivorous, and tacitly intimidating hunters that feed on smaller animals. But it’s how they hunt that makes them so unique: on the spine of its modified dorsal fin is a kind of living “fishing rod,” and at the tip is a fleshy, bulbous organ called an esca.

The esca is where that magic comes in. Down in these inky wells, the anglerfish uses this blue-green bioluminescent orb to lure in unsuspecting critters – and inhales them with its massive jaw.

Ugly? Scary? I’d say yes to both…

But it’s not just the teeth that bite. What makes the anglerfish so terrifyingly potent is the ability to draw its prey out of the darkness with its own light. That's what makes it a perfect motif for Brightspot’s new native AI agent, Esca, which provides illuminating assistance across the entire content lifecycle.

Esca’s domain is the very depths of a brand’s content ecosystem, shining brilliantly on your owned content. It’s designed to help you “swim” through mundane, repetitive, and tedious tasks so you spend less time fighting currents – and more time in the creative flow. Esca is also native to the Brightspot editor, working within the roles and permissions you’ve already established.

And I’m happy to report that the product’s whimsically branded character is, shall we say, more adorable than its inspiration:

In Brightspot, Esca draws solutions out of the deepest part of your content. It’s designed to understand your brand voice and structure, as well as the way your team works. Ask it to build a new page on your site, add an FAQ section, or create translations on the fly. It’s a powerful assistant that simplifies work and accelerates content velocity.

Esca has been helping Brightspot’s customers navigate the flotsam and jetsam of busywork. But now, it’s swimming upstream with its new Esca Automations, an AI-powered SaaS workflow engine that goes beyond content creation to full orchestration. Together with its assistance capabilities, they form Brightspot’s Esca suite, a governed agentic AI platform for creating, managing, and deploying AI-powered experiences.

Casting an agentic AI vision that reels in customers

Esca Automations is the latest step in Brightspot’s ambitious AI evolution, which is already delivering a host of new features and capabilities to its customers – a roster that includes world-class brands like FedEx, Whole Foods, and the Special Olympics, as well as trusted media outlets like AP News, NBC Sports, and the Los Angeles Times.

Like an anglerfish, the content ops and enterprise CMS platform maintains a unique position in the pantheon of content management and digital experience platforms. It combines a flexible, hybrid-headless architecture with out-of-the-box tools designed for the most intense rigors that enterprise teams face.

This certainly includes industries like high-tech and manufacturing. But Brightspot’s “sweet spot” is in media and publishing, where it's deftly engineered for the unique needs of newsrooms, broadcasters, live events, and more. It’s this deep domain expertise and tacit specialization that makes the CMS a “Gold Standard” in these categories.

When I last spoke to Brightspot’s President and Chief Product Officer, Ravi Singh, we talked about the company’s roadmap – and how human-controlled, AI-powered storytelling was the new mantra.

At the end of last year, Brightspot pushed its most transformational release to date, introducing an enhanced UX that eliminated inefficiencies and addressed the cognitive overload for editorial teams. It also introduced a slate of trusted AI features, including new usage and tracking to help provide governance and ensure human control.

Swim ahead to today, and Esca Automations is building on the promise of AI to help drive greater productivity. Brands are struggling under the weight of growing content debt, and teams don’t need more of it – they need effortless orchestration where operations can effectively run themselves, with humans in full control.

“Our customers need to govern, localize, enrich, optimize, and distribute content across an increasingly complex ecosystem without adding more manual work,” Ravi said. “Esca Automations turns those repeatable operations into agentic workflows.”

As Ravi told me in a previous interview, Brightspot doesn’t focus on fads. While every platform in the CMS category has introduced an agentic system – often with multiple agents or sub-agents focused on specific marketing tasks – Brightspot has been mindful, deliberate, and customer-centric in its development of an agentic solution.

“We don't chase our competitors’ roadmaps,” he said. “What we do is stay true to what our customers need and want.”

A ‘tackle box’ for repetitive tasks and agentic orchestration

Marketing teams are feeling the heat. They have more to juggle than ever before, but they’re losing hours to manual grunt work, much of which is tedious and mind-numbing. Research shows that people lose up to 40% of productive time switching between multiple tasks, all due to the cognitive toll of “reorienting” the brain and swiveling their chairs.

For content operations professionals, this hidden cost of bouncing between repetitive tasks – things like translating, tagging, auditing drafts for brand compliance, and routing work through review cycles – is a hit to productivity. And it’s only getting worse.

This is where Esca Automations is lighting the way. Built around Brightspot’s Esca AI agent, it connects to the systems in your business stack, leveraging a composable approach that eliminates the need for a rip-and-replace or forced consolidation.

At its core, Esca Automations turns repeatable operations into agentic workflows, allowing teams to reduce the time needed to manage their content operations and focus instead on creating high-value, differentiated experiences for customers.

What’s slick about Esca Automations is just how easy it is. In seconds, you can use a basic prompt to describe an automation using natural language, and you're off to the races.

If you’re looking to start from scratch, you can tap Esca’s no-code visual builder, which offers a canvas for constructing a new automation with an AI agent. Brightspot’s clean UX offers a familiar surface for assembling your custom workflow.

What’s nice is the available template options for getting started. You can select from an assortment of ready-made agents to power your automation, including an Accessibility Agent, a Brand Voice Compliance Agent, or even a Segmentation & Experimentation Agent. All dynamite resources for a content marketer in the trenches.

From here, you can drag-and-drop your way to a custom workflow, adding in MCP servers that your agent can work across. This can be a separate Brightspot environment, GitHub, or another tool source (more on this in a minute).

You can also assign a specific team member to be designated as the “human in the loop.” This will force an agent to pause at the appropriate place and seek approval before completing its task. It’s a built-in layer of governance that helps ensure you’re in control.

Esca Automations can also be pointed at tasks like content translations, auditing drafts against brand and compliance guidelines before publishing, and content transformation for different channels like social media. You can also trigger actions across third-party integrations like Slack, Asana, Jira, and more.

As AI search becomes more mainstream, consumers are discovering brands through both owned website channels and answer engines like ChatGPT. In my previous coverage about the rise of Machine Experience (MX), I framed the urgency for brands to serve an explosively growing audience of bots and agents – and how most websites simply aren’t ready for this brave new world of B2A (Business-to-Agent).

Esca Automations is fortifying what machines need by producing structured content as an output. When users create FAQs, summaries, and metadata to drive visibility, Esca makes the enrichment and optimization a background process. This is a foundational tenet for enhancing AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

As I mentioned previously, the complete Esca suite also includes access to Brightspot’s MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, enabling enterprise teams to bring their own agents to the Brightspot ecosystem to work alongside Esca’s agents (and a whole lot more). This is a fantastic addition for marketers who are leaning on AI tools like Claude Desktop, where Brightspot’s MCP can provide a secure, standardized bridge to deliver cross-system orchestration.

Assessing your ‘Agentic CMS’ readiness

In my recent keynote at the Boye & Company CMS Connect conference, I spoke about the challenge that enterprise buyers face when it comes to divining value from agentic AI. In the content management and digital experience platform categories, vendors are adding agentic features daily, but struggling to signal their differentiated value through the noise.

While many have embraced this mantle of being an “Agentic CMS,” there’s no established playbook or pattern for what it actually means. Sure, many tools have shipped AI features, some with meaningful impact. But in truth, positioning as an “Agentic CMS” is more the domain of marketing than true architecture – at least for now.

As I noted in my recent talk, AI has become the substrate. The real value is whether a CMS can support agentic workflows in production. Brightspot’s Director of Engineering and Applied AI, Paul Easterbrooks, said it best: “The teams that treat this moment as an infrastructure decision, rather than a feature procurement, are the ones who will be best positioned as the category matures.”

“The teams that treat this moment as an infrastructure decision, rather than a feature procurement, are the ones who will be best positioned as the category matures.”

I agree. And while Brightspot is pushing its own agentic narrative, it’s also doing its part to provide a vendor-agnostic perspective on how to evaluate a content management system through this technical lens. The goal is simple: clarity.

In Brightspot's handy 7-point agentic CMS readiness checklist, you’ll gain perspective on some of the key considerations when evaluating a platform’s agentic profile. It covers everything from APIs with predictable schemas to structured content modeling that supports LLMs. It also highlights the all-important issues of token efficiency and context hygiene, and details the crucial role of human-in-the-loop governance with audit trails and compliance readiness.

Agentic transformation isn’t for the casual fisherman. Many pilots fail, and I’ve covered research from Cleanlab and Fiddler AI that highlight the fault lines. In most cases, AI isn’t the problem – it’s the lack of a cohesive plan and the right governance. Brightspot is tackling this head-on with its unique Agentic AI Workshop, giving content and marketing teams a hands-on session to map their workflows, identify high-value use cases, and leave with a pilot-ready roadmap.

The verdict

There are a lot of fish stories in the deep sea of AI. Some platforms are cutting the bait, while others are messaging the marketing. Being able to see through the darkness to uncover the real value has never been more vital to the success of an enterprise’s AI strategy and investment.

While many CMS platforms are pushing innovative capabilities, a smaller cohort understands the scale and rigorous demands of enterprise content operations. When introducing agentic AI into these environments, organizations are buying the promise of automation – but they’re relying on trust and accountability to back it up.

Brightspot’s Esca Automations is built precisely for these kinds of intensive use cases. Its legacy in media and publishing gives it a strong foundation around the critical tenets of governance, and a deeper understanding of how content debt is driving the need for greater automation.

Esca’s UX removes the barriers of complexity for content ops teams, delivering a clean, drag-and-drop visual builder that makes custom workflows a snap. I like the overall navigability and quick access to MCP tooling, as well as the option to hook up Claude Desktop with ease (something I'm hearing more of from marketing teams). All checks in the win column, making this a solution worthy of a demo.

The company’s culture of innovation is squarely focused on value, and that’s driven by intimacy. As Ravi Singh told me, Brightspot listens closely during customer advisory boards to divine what really matters for the people behind the screens, and where AI can help – and not replace – their work.

“We want to give you the canvas that you can put your soul and creativity into,” he said. “It isn’t replacing the storytelling. It’s replacing the friction.”

Is this what an “Agentic CMS” should look like?

It’s a conflated question. This is, after all, not an established category. And it might not matter in six months. What will matter is how a software platform delivers for its customers.

Brightspot is doing more than simply telegraphing the words – they’re reinforcing the journey for customers through high-touch resources and human-led workshops. It’s a vital differentiator that addresses change management in a meaningful way. And in this complex, accelerated world of agentic AI, having a guide in these deep waters can keep you from getting eaten.
