He is VP/Chief Architect at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.altudo.co/">Altudo</a>, and a CMS Critic contributor. <hr /> When people talk about personalization, they often mean “the right content to the right person at the right time.” That idea is now past tense.I have watched this shift play out up close, from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/sitecore">Sitecore’s</a> early rules-based personalization, through <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/contentstack">Contentstack’s</a> use of edge-based personalization in a composable architecture, to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/products/optimizely">Optimizely’s</a> launch of Opal, a system of marketing AI agents. Personalization no longer stops at swapping content on a page. It now reaches into the interaction itself, and soon, into the relationships agents form with one another.<h3 id="when-agents-adapt-to-us">When Agents Adapt to Us</h3>That shift, from “what” to “how,” is where the major CMS players are already moving, and you can see it in the different bets they're making:<ul><li>Contentstack has put its weight behind <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/livin-on-the-edge-contentstacks-new-adaptive-dxp-might-just-rock-your-world">EDGE</a>, which they call a hyper-personalization platform. It blends their headless CMS with a real-time CDP, AI, and automation. The goal is simple but ambitious: deliver one-to-one experiences in the moment and at scale. Because it is composable, brands can adapt interactions without locking themselves into rigid patterns. What strikes me about EDGE is that it reframes personalization as something continuous, not a campaign you set and forget.</li><li>Optimizely has taken another route with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/optimizely-opal-gets-supercharged-for-agentic-ai-powering-infinite-use-cases-for-marketers">Opal</a>. Instead of a single assistant, Opal is built as a collection of agents that act like members of a marketing team. There is a campaign manager agent, a personalization advisor, a market researcher, and more. With the 2.0 release, Optimizely put the emphasis on letting these agents collaborate and run multi-step workflows across content, data, and experimentation. I have seen teams spend weeks coordinating those same steps manually. Opal hints at a world where marketing execution is handled by an ensemble of digital teammates who can plan, act, and adjust together.</li><li>Sitecore has focused on bringing assistance directly into daily work. Through <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sitecore.com/products/sitecore-stream">Stream</a>, they have introduced AI copilots that support authors and marketers in real time as they draft and optimize campaigns. On top of that, Sitecore’s partnership with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/sitecore-sharpens-ai-focus-with-strategic-partnership-and-new-leadership-appointments">Gradial</a> shows how agentic workflows can extend into campaign execution. It is not just about smarter editors or quicker drafts. It is about agents that can carry intent through to delivery and adapt along the way. For a company that has lived for years in the world of static content publishing, that is a meaningful step forward.</li></ul>None of these approaches feels like a gimmick.They are different answers to the same problem: personalization is no longer about what content you are shown, it is about how the interaction unfolds. Whether that happens through hyper-personalization at the edge, through orchestrated marketing agents, or via copilots and execution partners, the shift is real and already in motion.<h3 id="what-nondeterminism-really-means">What Nondeterminism Really Means</h3>Most software behaves like math: 2 + 2 always equals 4. Generative AI does not. Ask it to draft a thank-you note and you will get three different answers, all plausible, none identical. That variability is what we call nondeterminism.It is the very thing that makes AI feel creative, but also the reason it needs personalization to stay useful. As <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://parivedasolutions.com/perspectives/managing-the-non-deterministic-nature-of-generative-ai/">Pariveda Solutions points out</a>, nondeterminism is what makes AI flexible and creative, but it also introduces governance challenges that remain unresolved. In my own work with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cmscritic.com/getting-loud-with-xm-cloud-sitecore-reports-100-growth-of-its-ai-powered-cloud-based-cms">XM Cloud,</a> I have seen how unpredictable outcomes can be a feature if the system adapts well – and a liability if it does not.<h3 id="when-agents-adapt-to-each-other">When Agents Adapt to Each Other</h3>The next frontier is agents adapting not just to us but to each other. Nondeterminism multiplies when two autonomous systems interact. They need ways to converge on workable outcomes.Sometimes that looks like adjusting communication style, where one agent is structured and terse, another free-form and verbose. Sometimes, it means learning to accept differences in task style, such as fast approximation versus cautious step-by-step reasoning. Other times it's about role negotiation: who leads, who validates, who escalates.And sometimes it is memory. Agents do not just adapt in the moment; they remember. That memory can look like a grudge. A search agent that hallucinated last time will get fact-checked the next. A procurement agent that botched a deal may face stricter oversight. Even first impressions stick. If an agent’s very first hand-off is sloppy, the other agent may never fully trust it, no matter how good the later work becomes.Humans behave the same way. In corporate life, one bad kickoff meeting can color a partnership for months. Agents will carry those patterns too.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.deepset.ai/blog/ai-agents-and-deterministic-workflows-a-spectrum"> Deepset calls this the “spectrum of determinism to nondeterminism</a>.” I call it relationship management.<h3 id="everyday-illustrations">Everyday Illustrations</h3>Picture a grocery agent told to buy apples if they are $0.99 a pound. A deterministic system comes back empty because they are $1.09. An adaptive one checks with you, “They are a little higher today. Should I buy anyway?” That is useful, until the store’s own agent learns to nudge yours into paying even more.Or ride-hailing. You set a $20 target. The price surges to $23. Do you want your agent to decline, wait, or decide on its own? What happens when the ride-share’s agent starts upselling yours into priority pickup at $28?Or travel. You say, “Book me a flight under $500.” The system finds none. A flexible agent returns with, “There is one at $525 with better times. Should I grab it?” Helpful, but it shows how quickly rules can bend.In the enterprise, this gets thornier. Procurement policies might cap software licenses at $50 per seat. A deterministic agent halts the deal. A personalized one negotiates to $55 and closes it. That looks like a win until you realize the vendor’s agent deliberately anchored higher, knowing yours would flex upward.Healthcare raises the stakes even more. You ask for an appointment with your doctor next week. A rigid agent says none available. A personalized one offers a nurse practitioner tomorrow or a specialist in two weeks. That looks like a better experience, but it could also push you toward higher-margin services instead of the care you really wanted.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.salesforce.com/blog/deterministic-ai/">Salesforce has written about this exact problem</a> of when to script agents tightly and when to let them roam. I see it every day in delivery projects. Too rigid and you frustrate users. Too loose and you open the door to manipulation.<h3 id="agents-that-carry-“you”-with-them">Agents That Carry “You” With Them</h3>Now push it further. Imagine your agent not only executes tasks but carries your personality footprint into every interaction. If you are cost-sensitive, it pushes harder. If you are time-poor, it pays more for speed. If you are detail-driven, it double-checks everything.What if you could swap personas entirely?<ul><li>"Frugal Andy" does the grocery shopping</li><li>"Executive Andy" books the flights</li><li>"Playful Andy" explores games and hobbies.</li></ul>Your agent would not only personalize to you. It would personalize as you.But there is risk in this. If the other agent knows who you are or which persona you are using, it can adapt back. That can be powerful when aligned with your goals, but it can also be exploited. Imagine a vendor agent that recognizes executive mode and steers you toward premium packages.This is not hypothetical. Optimizely’s Opal agents already act like different team members depending on context. Contentstack’s Brand Kit lets you define voice profiles and store guidelines so that every AI-generated artifact reflects your identity. Sitecore’s Stream copilots are designed to guide content creators in real time, aligning their work with brand and role expectations.These are early signals of a future where agents carry pieces of us, including quirks, preferences, and even biases, into every exchange.<h3 id="why-this-matters">Why This Matters</h3>This is why nondeterminism is not a flaw but the feature. Deterministic systems did not need personalization. There was only one output. Nondeterministic systems can go in many directions, and personalization is what prevents chaos.The best metaphor I know is jazz. Musicians improvising do not know exactly where the others will go. They adapt, they respond, they personalize their playing to the group. The music works not because it is scripted but because the players trust each other enough to bend and flex.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/quantumblack/our-insights/seizing-the-agentic-ai-advantage">McKinsey has argued</a> that this adaptability is the defining advantage of agentic AI. From what I have seen in publishing systems, SaaS cost optimization, and large-scale CMS migrations, I agree. The resilience comes not from rigid plans but from the ability to adapt in context.<h3 id="what-leaders-should-prepare-for">What Leaders Should Prepare For</h3>Leaders should focus on their readiness in key areas. For example, trust frameworks must extend beyond human-agent interactions into agent-to-agent ecosystems. Standards cannot stay as fixed APIs; they need flexibility built in. Identity management has to protect personality profiles and alter egos from misuse. And agents must be able to remember not just what they did for us, but how they worked with others.<h3 id="the-future-of-personalization">The Future of Personalization</h3>Personalization started with content. It evolved into experiences. Now, it is moving into interactions – first with humans and then with other agents.If we get this right, nondeterminism will not be something to suppress. It will be the source of resilience, adaptability, and creativity. The companies that thrive will not just personalize their websites. They will personalize their agents. Those agents will adapt to us, and to each other, in ways that reflect who we are or even who we choose to be.And like humans, they will remember. First impressions will matter. Grudges may form. Wix Introduce Advanced Meta-Tags for Professional Users

It’s time to build your website, and one of the first things you need to decide is also one of the most important.  Do you choose one of the popular Open-Source systems (like WordPress or Joomla) and get your hands dirty, or do you use a Proprietary system and pay someone else to get their hands dirty for you? 
<h3>But perhaps the more important question is… What’s the difference!?</h3>
A lot of people think the difference is “Free vs. Pay,” but it’s not that simple.  The technical definition is that Open-Source systems make their source code available to the user, while Proprietary systems don’t.  That means that developers using an Open-Source CMS can modify and update their sites themselves, while users of Proprietary systems leave it to the company that maintains the system. 
<h3>Open-Source CMS</h3>
The most popular choice, but don’t let that sway your decision – they’re popular because they’re often free.  However, their popularity isn’t negligible; more users, combined with the availability of the code, means that any programmer can add to it, which means a Open-Source CMS will generally have a lot of extensions and plug-ins to choose from.  This is pretty essential if you’re looking for something customizable, but keep in mind, the more custom add-ons you want to buy, the less “free” it becomes.  If you’re serious about how your site looks, you should shake the idea that an Open-Source CMS is not going to cost anything.

<h3>Proprietary CMS</h3>
Don’t really care how your website is built as long as it works?  Proprietary systems “lease out” existing templates for a fee so you don’t have to stress about the technical aspects of your site.  However, that also means you can’t customize it how you want.  But are Proprietary systems worth the cost compared to the free alternatives?  That depends on which one you use. A good Proprietary system functions smoothly and will update often.  A bad one won’t. 
So which CMS is better?  Again, it’s not that simple.   The first thing you need to know is what you want.  Once you’ve figured that out, it’s just a matter of seeing which system can give it to you. 
<h3>When to Use Open-Source: </h3>
<ul>
<li>You are a tiny business with an even tinier budget.  In this case, you just can’t beat “free.” </li>
<li>You are not afraid of code and feel comfortable making the upgrades you want by yourself.  Techies love Open-Source systems the same way mechanics love scrap-yards. </li>
<li>You may need to move your website to another platform later on.  Exporting data is rarely a problem for Open-Source. </li>
</ul>
<h3>When to Use Proprietary:</h3>
<ul>
<li>You don’t have a lot of time to spend building your site. If your time is constrained but your budget is not, this is the choice for you. </li>
<li>Your industry requires a very specific type of site that you can’t build yourself.  Proprietary systems offer that “right-out-of-the-box” functionality. </li>
<li>You don’t want to worry about bugs, updates, security, or hosting.  Proprietary works best for technology ostriches. </li>
</ul>
<h3>The Bottom Line</h3>
If you want to do it yourself, use an Open-Source system.
If you want someone else to do it for you, use a Proprietary system.

Open-Source vs. Proprietary: It’s Not Always About the Money

Every athlete says their team will win before the game, and yet afterwards half of them are sure to be wrong. 
It’s hard to trust someone gloating about their own product, so we’re a bit skeptical to believe Selectica CEO Blaine Mathieu when he describes the sixth version of their Contract Lifecycle Management system as “CMS on steroids.”  Still, their newest installment boasts an array of advanced features, so is polite modesty really necessary? 
<h3>Everything Contractual</h3>
Selectica CLM spans the entire lifecycle of a contract, from birth to death to rebirth (renewal), and is said to simplify all the stages in between.  It categorizes its service into nine key stages:  Contract Request, Authoring, Negotiaion, Approval, Execution, Obligations Management, Amendment, Audit &amp; Reporting, and Renewal.  It can be configured to any platform you’re already using, with full mobile accessibility on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.  Plus, due to the sensitive nature of contracts, each document is protected with an industry-grade 128-bit encryption, and is backed up and recoverable if need be. 
That all sounds luxurious, but do you really need a management system for your contracts?  Selectica seems to think so, and they make some good arguments.  They claim that their CLM will “turn potential revenue leaks into revenue generators,” and that its implementation will “accelerate sales cycles, create opportunities, mitigate risk and prevent revenue loss through a streamlined process that’s fast and compliant.”  It makes sense:  some of the most important, strategic business decisions are made surrounding contracts.  Better organization means you’re better informed, and if you’re better informed, you make better decisions.

<h3>By the Numbers</h3>
The statistics of Selectica CLM are indeed impressive: a 1-2% increase of revenue, a 50% reduction in contract cycle times, a 25% increase in contract renewal rates, a 55% improvement in contract compliance.  Plus, these numbers come from Forrester and Aberdeen, so they’re a bit more trustworthy than the brags of the product’s CEO.  It seems that more and more companies are coming to understand the importance of organizing contracts. 
<h3>New Additions</h3>
And what does version 6 bring to the table that makes the CEO so excited?  Most of the new features involve better integration with other platforms, namely DocuSign, Salesforce, and Microsoft Office.  Further, users can now create contracts using a variety of templates, and examine documents simultaneously, which is a great advantage if you need to compare information or need to check-in a lot of documents at the same time.  Aside from these, the new version offers faster navigation and improved user interface. 
<h3>Bottom Line  </h3>
Organization and compartmentalization can give your business a subtle edge, and today businesses need every advantage they can get.  That’s why we’re supporters of Selectica, whether or not it’s as great as Mathieu says.

Selectica: Is this Contract Management System Really a “CMS on Steroids”?

LightCMS have announced some useful social features along with some interface enhancements to be released tomorrow, May 7th 2014.
As a popular cloud-based website builder, LightCMS offers an array of tools which help users to build professional websites, online stores and blogs in just a few clicks.
LightCMS have claimed that these new changes come as “highly-requested additions”. So, let's take a look at what's new.
<h2>Social Icons &amp; The Social Token</h2>
LightCMS's new social token and social media settings enable you to display social icons simply, and allow your clients to manage their icons without tinkering with your website design on any major level.
Once the feature is launched, you'll see a new section on the advanced tab of your website settings. This section allows the user to choose any number of social icons to include and to provide the URL to use with each associated social icon.

To add icons, you only need to click the “Add” button before selecting the icons you want to add. Once selected, your icons will show up in your list where you can re-order them by dragging and dropping.
Phone and Email icons are also available along with the social icons. So, when visitors touch the email icon from a smartphone, it automatically loads up a new email. When they touch the phone, it automatically starts calling.
However, in order for the icons to display on your website, your website's template must include the new <a href="http://help.lightcms.com/social-token" target="_blank">social token</a>. All of LightCMS's “featured” designs (plus a few others) will be updated to include the social token by the launch of the social feature.
<h2>The SEO Tab &amp; Developer Role Assignment</h2>
A further enhancement to LightCMS comes via a new tab on the Website Settings screen – the SEO tab.
This tab is home to a range of SEO-related features for your website, including; 301 Redirect Management, Robots.txt, and the Google Analytics / Additional Header field. These features aren't new, but simply housed in a different tab. This tidies up the user interface by setting SEO-related features apart while keeping the Advanced tab shorter and cleaner.
LightCMS Partners are also in for a treat this week, thanks to a new client Sign-up Element. This allows you to enable the sign up element to assign the “Developer Role” to new users when they sign up. The Developer Role allows users to view and manage designs for their website via the <a href="http://www.lightcms.com/design">Design Manager</a>.

LightCMS Announce New Social Features & Interface Changes

<a href="https://www.socialengine.com/">SocialEngine</a> PHP users will be pleased to hear of the platform's latest release, version 4.8.2.
The widely popular social network software comes in two editions; SocialEngine Cloud and SocialEngine PHP (non-hosted).
SocialEngine is completely unbranded and can be customized to no end. Thanks to the large SocialEngine Community, there are also plenty of addons and themes to be experimented with.
With SocialEngine PHP 4.8.2, numerous bug and performance fixes have been introduced. Here's a quick overview of what SocialEngine PHP users can expect.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work for everybody who upgraded to 4.8.0 at the time – but with 4.8.2, all Zend-related issues have been fixed.

Sitecore and MongoDB Partner to Solve Big Data Challenges for Marketers

 Such portals can be in the form of online newspapers, magazine sites, business directories, city portals and community portals – all of which can be powered by BlackMonk. 
 With version 3.3, an inline editor has been introduced for rich static pages, along with business directory updates and the addition of Stripe as a payment gateway. 
 Let's now take a look at what's new with BlackMonk.
<h2>Snazzy Rich Static Pages &amp; Cover Images</h2>
In my <a href="/blackmonk-cms-review/" target="_blank">BlackMonk CMS review</a>, one of my criticisms of the platform was regarding the lack of editing and design options for BlackMonk's static pages. These include common and important websites pages like the “About” page.  
 Impressively, BlackMonk quickly reacted with the release of <a href="/blackmonk-v3.2-released/" target="_blank">version 3.2</a>, and have now completed their static page editing enhancements with version 3.3. Now, those same static pages can be designed freely with an inline editor.

The inline editor enables you to edit and format text as well as add things like cover images and videos. Unlike the conventional WYSIWYG editor where content is edited within a small text area, the inline editor gives the experience of editing a live web page. This allows you to view the page as visitors would see it, even as you edit. 
 Also, as well as cover images being an option for static pages, they can no also be inserted into other content pages, like business directories or upcoming event pages.

<h2>Improved Business Directory &amp; Stripe Payments</h2>
BlackMonk 3.3 also brings about changes to the business directory app, which allows publishers and advertisers to create extensive business listings, complete with photo gallery and product catalog. 
 The app now benefits from the addition of photo and review widget, appearing on the index page of the directory. The widget displays recent photos and reviews, giving users instant access to updated listings and consumer opinion. 
 User's ability to charge fees for things such as sponsored articles, business directory subscription, event sponsoring and so forth, have also been enhanced.  Publishers who prefer to use the Stripe payment gateway now have the option to automate payments for business directory subscriptions. In previous BlackMonk versions, automated subscription payment option was only available for PayPal payment gateway.

Every marketer who’s ever been responsible for content marketing knows that keeping content fresh, relevant, and up-to-date is incredibly important. Part of any content marketing strategy involves keeping your website populated with meaningful content that will engage and draw users to your site. 
However, the urgency of content creation means that you may not be reviewing your website design as often as you should. 
A good website with a modern feel and quality navigation enhances the user experience and drives repeat visits. There’s an old adage that you should update your website with a completely new design every year or two. Realistically, this may not be possible and you might be thinking that if your website is currently working for you, why change it?
Well, there are a couple of reasons. The first is that even a well-designed, functioning website gets stale from both the perspective of design and technology quite quickly. Everyone has had the experience of going to a website and immediately recognizing that it hasn’t been updated in years. 
Those signs include missing key elements such as rotators, newer social media icons, or relying heavily on flash technology. It’s particularly egregious when your website doesn’t respect that many of your visitors will be viewing the site using mobile devices. 
This is most noticeable when your website lacks responsive design or a dedicated mobile version. Another dead giveaway that your site has not been updated recently is that the screen resolution it was designed for is too large for mobile devices, and too small for a modern desktop monitor. Where you’ve got screen real estate, you need to use it, and where it’s not available you need to ensure that only the most relevant content is presented.
So let’s say that you recognize your website is starting to get a bit dated. How do you justify to your CFO or CEO the costs associated with a complete website redesign? Every marketer I’ve ever talked to has struggled to get the budget they need to be successful on the tactical day-to-day activities of marketing. Getting enough budget to redesign your website is often like pulling teeth. So, to help justify your decision and get you the budget that you need here are a few tips on calculating the ROI of a website redesign:

If your site is not optimized for mobile and tablet usage, use your CMS or Google analytics to determine how many visitors are coming to your site using these devices. Being able to demonstrate the user experience and quantify the number of affected visitors can go a long way making your case.
</li>
<li>
If your analytics show that people on mobile or tablets navigate away from your site faster than those on desktops, you have a compelling reason to modernize your website with responsive design.
</li>
<li>
If your site is heavily dependent on flash technology, those same analytics can help determine how many visitors can’t access your content because they are using an iOS based system.
</li>
<li>
Check for brand consistency. What often happens is that your brand slowly changes and develops over time. If the website has been static for a long period, it immediately shows that there is a gap between your current marketing materials and your existing website. If you can show that your new designs are more effective than your old ones, this will lend weight to your argument that the website needs to be updated.
</li>
<li>
Crunch the numbers. (You know your CFO loves numbers.) Have your conversion rates been dropping over time? How many of your new leads are coming directly through your website forms, landing pages or website “contact us” page? If you’re evidence shows that these channels are less effective than they used to be, you can use that data to calculate the value of the lost opportunities. Use your knowledge of your organizations conversion from leads to closed sales. Estimating lost revenue as a dollar figure may be the most powerful way to justify the budget for a new website.

Doing a win/loss analysis of your most recent deals can reveal how important your website and the information on it is to the decision-making process of prospects. You may be able to connect a lost opportunity and the dollar figures it represents to a quote like “… but I couldn’t find the information I needed…” or “… I didn’t realize you offer that product/service”. Even in cases where you have won the deal you may have won “…despite your website.”

So with these tips in mind, you can build a case for a website redesign using strong metrics which makes getting budget approvals significantly easier. Keep in mind, once you have acquired the budget for a website redesign, it’s also a great time to evaluate whether your current CMS has the features and functionality you need to keep your website’s content up-to-date.
