Joomla Updated Ahead of Upcoming 3.5 Release

<a href="http://wid.gy/" target="_blank">Widgy</a> is a new heterogeneous tree editor, built on Python/Django, that takes the “tree” analogy one step further. By integrating with <a href="http://mezzanine.jupo.org/" target="_blank">Mezzanine CMS</a>, it allows users to edit or create (“groom and grow,” if you will) web pages and other data as if they were branches on a tree.
This HTML editor claims to be much more. Its drag-and-drop interface targets website creators who want control without knowing code, but if you happen to already be tech-savvy, this translates into a system that’s simple and easy-to-use. Repositioning widgets is a breeze, and because Widgy is proudly open-source, you’ll have a lot of add-ons to choose from.
This tree editor is the latest brainchild of Fusionbox, a Denver-based web design firm started in 2001. While they mainly focus on client-specific online marketing and design, they also develop software to help there clients—and everyone else—with DIY projects. Widgy is their latest in a series of open-source software committed to simplifying the lives of online businesses.

Widgy was recently unveiled at the PyCon 2014 conference in Montreal in mid-April. The fruits of their “baby” come after more than a year of building it and even longer conceptualizing it. The reception was generally positive, with interested programmers already coming up with ideas for what it can do. “This is exactly why I wanted to open source widgy in the first place,” remarked one of Widgy’s programmers.   
Now, let’s look at the fine points of what Widgy offers.
<h3>Edit any heterogeneous, tree-structured data, not just HTML</h3>
This could be an immense relief to those in an industry that uses such data, but for the majority of us just looking for something to help our websites, it’s irrelevant.

Widgy handles widgets well, which makes sense considering its name. Widgets are Django ModelForms; no additional JavaScript is needed for most widgets, and it’s possible to override the form template or include your own SCSS files to customize how they work. 
The compatibility framework ensures that widgets go where you put them and stay there. Plus, with its advanced link network, widgets like Button can link to other models.
<h3>Page Builder</h3>
Widgy can shoulder the burden of building web pages if you don’t know HTML, and has common and advanced widgets to help.
<h3>Review Queue</h3>
Standard review queue lets you set permissions on who can see what, review version changes, schedule future publications, and preview changes.

Feel free to use the Django authentication framework for choosing who sees what, the Django haystack search for advanced searches, the Django debug toolbar for troubleshooting, and Django-require for optimizing your editor static assets. It’s all part of the package. You can also use any Django apps you want with Plug-ins.
<h3>The Bottom Line</h3>
Widgy is still just a newborn, but it shows promise. It seems to be geared to a specific type of user with specific needs, so perhaps most of you don’t have a use for it.

Widgy: New Tree Editor Has Roots in CMS

The other day, I came across a new product that's focus it to allow you to quickly and easily build a website through your smartphone browser. Two things came to mind when I saw this; the first was why on earth would I want to design a website through my smartphone and the second was how good can this possibly be?
Let's find out.
First things first, I picked up my Samsung Galaxy S6 and went to the Binarta website to sign up for an account (no credit card required so signing up is easy to do).
You start by selecting one of three available designs:

When you first are logged in, you are presented with your website based on the template you've chosen and a number of options along the top of your browser.

To change text throughout the site, simply tap on the text and you'll be given a quick popup where you an modify the text with your smartphone keyboard. All in all, very basic changes are easy to make.

Depending on the box you click on, there may or may not be formatting options. The formatting toolbar does load on paragraphs for instance, just not on header text where the size is specified as part of the theme.
Here's how things look with the formatting toolbar enabled (clicking on standard paragraph text will give you this):

While everything popped up fine, It did not scale properly in Chrome and hitting the back button did not allow me to close the page, meaning I ended up having to close my browser tab and attempt again. On the second attempt, the same thing happened. Initially, I thought this was a CSS issue but given that it seems to freeze the tab, I'm not 100% sure. It doesn't seem to be an isolated issue either as I had my editor, Kaya test this on his iPhone with Chrome and the same issue occurred. Binarta is aware of this issue and looking into it so I'm sure it'll be resolved soon.
If you want to modify any images, you can click on them and you'll be prompted to upload from your phone gallery or documents (depending on the device). All in all, it's pretty straight forward and easy to do.
To make SEO changes such as meta descriptions and site titles, you have to upgrade your account to the Essentials package, currently priced at $29.99. This package comes with some other options as your own domain name.

For support issues, there is a contact form within Binarta which I tried and had a reply within about 10-15 minutes offering help and the support was in english (with no language barrier) so I'll give them bonus points for this. I would, however, be curious if the response time is the same throughout the day or whether there are time zone restrictions. <h3>Conclusion</h3>
Binarta has tons of potential and is excellent if you want to develop websites on your phone, something not offered elsewhere that I can think of. I'd like to see more them expand their feature set a bit to justify the price but for those who need this type of solution, it's the best offering I'm aware of. Binarta has an opportunity here to really nail this if they listen to their users and add some more capabilities to their platform offering.

CMS Critic to Attend Liferay Digital Solutions Forum in London (Plus, 10 Free Tickets)

The 2015 CMS Awards have well and truly arrived, and the nominations stage is underway.

You don't need a big budget or a big history to get nominated. Here's how to get people to nominate your product.
1. Identify The Most Relevant Categories
Before you set out your campaign to get nominated, it's a good idea to identify which category (or categories) your platform best fits into.
There are a wide range of categories to accommodate all CMS types. Plus, extra categories like “Most Innovative CMS” and “Most Promising CMS” make the CMS Awards that much more inclusive and flexible.

2. Reach Out To your Audience
Now that you know what categories to aim for, you can begin asking your audience to nominate you.
Make use of your email newsletter, your blog and your social media handles to urge your fans and software users to nominate you in your chosen category. It's also a good idea to provide incentives, if possible.

The CMS Awards: How To Get Your Platform Nominated

Customer demand for personalized buying experiences is at an all-time high.
We have grown accustomed to getting exactly what we want at the swipe of a finger – everything from clothing and takeout to private drivers and child care services. In this “there’s an app for that” world, brands have no choice but to provide seamless and relevant customer experiences across all channels from mobile device to store front.

This means understanding customers on a personal level and then engaging them in targeted real-time journeys to deliver the most relevant customer experience.
So, how are brands doing?
<h2>Misunderstood &amp; Disconnected</h2>
At a time when consumer demand is up and loyalty is tenuous at best, marketers are struggling to gain a clear picture of their customers. In fact, a <a href="#resource">recent study</a> from IBM and Econsultancy found a massive disconnect between how well businesses think they are marketing and the customer’s actual experience.

	Gone are the days of the old-school “spray-and-pray” model that pushed the same message to thousands of individuals – consumers see right through that and demand more tailored interactions to catch their attention and more importantly, their wallets.

It has become imperative for brands to compete based on their customer experience, or risk losing valuable customers to the competition.

	For marketers, earning your customers’ trust is like hitting the jackpot. The more information a brand can gather about a specific customer, the better they can tailor offers and communications to deliver a more relevant experience.

The Great Customer Experience Divide: Three Tips for More Personalized Marketing

It’s time to build your website, and one of the first things you need to decide is also one of the most important.  Do you choose one of the popular Open-Source systems (like WordPress or Joomla) and get your hands dirty, or do you use a Proprietary system and pay someone else to get their hands dirty for you? 
<h3>But perhaps the more important question is… What’s the difference!?</h3>
A lot of people think the difference is “Free vs. Pay,” but it’s not that simple.  The technical definition is that Open-Source systems make their source code available to the user, while Proprietary systems don’t.  That means that developers using an Open-Source CMS can modify and update their sites themselves, while users of Proprietary systems leave it to the company that maintains the system. 
<h3>Open-Source CMS</h3>
The most popular choice, but don’t let that sway your decision – they’re popular because they’re often free.  However, their popularity isn’t negligible; more users, combined with the availability of the code, means that any programmer can add to it, which means a Open-Source CMS will generally have a lot of extensions and plug-ins to choose from.  This is pretty essential if you’re looking for something customizable, but keep in mind, the more custom add-ons you want to buy, the less “free” it becomes.  If you’re serious about how your site looks, you should shake the idea that an Open-Source CMS is not going to cost anything.

<h3>Proprietary CMS</h3>
Don’t really care how your website is built as long as it works?  Proprietary systems “lease out” existing templates for a fee so you don’t have to stress about the technical aspects of your site.  However, that also means you can’t customize it how you want.  But are Proprietary systems worth the cost compared to the free alternatives?  That depends on which one you use. A good Proprietary system functions smoothly and will update often.  A bad one won’t. 
So which CMS is better?  Again, it’s not that simple.   The first thing you need to know is what you want.  Once you’ve figured that out, it’s just a matter of seeing which system can give it to you. 
<h3>When to Use Open-Source: </h3>
<ul>
<li>You are a tiny business with an even tinier budget.  In this case, you just can’t beat “free.” </li>
<li>You are not afraid of code and feel comfortable making the upgrades you want by yourself.  Techies love Open-Source systems the same way mechanics love scrap-yards. </li>
<li>You may need to move your website to another platform later on.  Exporting data is rarely a problem for Open-Source. </li>
</ul>
<h3>When to Use Proprietary:</h3>
<ul>
<li>You don’t have a lot of time to spend building your site. If your time is constrained but your budget is not, this is the choice for you. </li>
<li>Your industry requires a very specific type of site that you can’t build yourself.  Proprietary systems offer that “right-out-of-the-box” functionality. </li>
<li>You don’t want to worry about bugs, updates, security, or hosting.  Proprietary works best for technology ostriches. </li>
</ul>
<h3>The Bottom Line</h3>
If you want to do it yourself, use an Open-Source system.
If you want someone else to do it for you, use a Proprietary system.

Open-Source vs. Proprietary: It’s Not Always About the Money

With the recent <a href="/ubuntu-16-10-now-available-to-download/">release of Ubuntu 16.10</a>, we thought we'd delve into the latest release of this popular Linux distribution and share with your our Ubuntu 16.10 Review. This review is intended for the desktop user.If you hop distros as much as I do (see <a href="/the-trials-and-tribulations-of-a-distro-hopper/">Trials and Tribulations of a Distro Hopper</a>) then you're probably pretty excited to mess with this release. The installation process for Ubuntu hasn't changed a wink. As per usual, it's one of the fastest and easiest installs out there and for my hardware, worked without issue. Installation of third party drivers is quick and easy as per usual. Some people prefer to use the GUI to install drivers but I find the console still to be far more efficient for most tasks so I install all of my third party drivers with one line.<code>sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall</code><img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/virtualbox_ubuntu_16_10_review_14_10_2016_11_28_491332x0-is.png" alt="ubuntu 16.10 review" />For those who want to use the GUI, however, just launch the app Software &amp; Updates and click the Additional Drivers tab or, alternatively, use the shortcut and launch the Additional Drivers link which brings you to the same place. Either method is fine.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/virtualbox_ubuntu_16_10_review_14_10_2016_11_33_361332x0-is.png" alt="ubuntu 16.10 review" />Ubuntu 16.10 doesn't visually look much different than previous releases but that doesn't come as much of a surprise. While Canonical is working on a new release of the Unity 8 desktop environment, the existing Unity interface hasn't changed much over the years and don't expect much difference here.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/virtualbox_ubuntu_16_10_review_14_10_2016_11_05_371332x0-is.png" alt="ubuntu 16.10 review" />On that same note, this release includes a preview session of Unity 8 and boy, let me tell you how much I hope this changes because it is simply awful looking. This only happened on this one Virtualbox install, however, as I was able to access it fine on my desktop. Perhaps a hardware issue, I'm not sure. Since it won't work on my install, here's a video showing the environment you SHOULD see: A large portion of the changes to Ubuntu 16.10 changes pertain to the server / cloud end of things, which is excellent since Ubuntu is a very popular choice in both instances. Ubuntu now uses the <a target="_blank" href="https://caolanm.blogspot.com/2016/02/native-gtk3-menubar-in-libreoffice.html">GTK3</a> version by default.Update Manager now shows changelog entries for PPAs too (<a target="_blank" href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253119">253119</a>).Apps provided by GNOME have been updated to at least 3.20. Many apps have been updated to 3.22 also.The Nautilus file browser has been <a target="_blank" href="https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2015/09/04/nautilus-3-18-comunicating-changes/">updated</a> to <a target="_blank" href="https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2016/02/08/nautilus-3-20-and-looking-forward/">3.20</a>.systemd is now used for <a target="_blank" href="https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2016-July/039465.html">user sessions</a>. System sessions had already been provided by systemd in previous Ubuntu releases.LibreOffice 5.2, during my testing, ran almost without a hitch and I didn't experience and glitches or issues of any kind initially. It was snappy, loaded quickly and was fully functional.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/virtualbox_ubuntu_16_10_review_14_10_2016_11_15_291332x0-is.png" alt="ubuntu 16.10 review" />However, when exporting and attempting to open a CSV file which a few lines in it.. the first time it opened perfectly and the second time it took almost 1 minute and my whole system slowed to a crawl. I'm not sure what happened here but I can't seem to get it to recur. If anyone else experiences issues like this, let me know.BTW, In case I forgot to mention it, I have fully updated the system and am using the default sources with no PPAs installed to make this review as fair as possible and so that I do not affect the installation with third party sources.Nautilus 3.20 includes a number of fixes and improvements which you can <a target="_blank" href="https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2016/02/08/nautilus-3-20-and-looking-forward/">read about here</a>. One small and handy update is the display of free space when selecting Other Locations within Nautilus. Overall, I found it much quicker than before, especially with regards to searches.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/virtualbox_ubuntu_16_10_review_14_10_2016_12_14_511332x0-is.png" alt="ubuntu 16.10 review" />Something that plagued me quite a bit during the writing of this Ubuntu 16.10 review was the number of “System Problem Detected” pop-ups I kept getting. This happened on multiple machines. I experienced ones related to Webkit and numerous related to Compiz and the system compositor:<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/virtualbox_ubuntu_16_10_review_14_10_2016_12_21_521332x0-is.png" alt="ubuntu 16.10 review" />For the purposes of this review, I won't be running Ubuntu 16.10 as my desktop of choice anyway so it's not going to affect me but for those of you out there considering using it for your desktop of choice, you may wish to wait a month or so for some of these to potentially get resolved before installing. Of course, I don't know all of the details on when or whether these will occur for everyone and we all know experiences can vary greatly so proceed at your own risk.You can also disable the bug reporting interface so you don't get these notices but the more people reporting bugs the better. To disable the bug reporting pop-ups, open a terminal window and type:<code>sudo nano /etc/default/apport</code>This will open a file editor. Use the arrow keys to navigate and change enabled from 1 to 0. The press CTRL-X to save and Y to accept the changes. Reboot and they should be disabled.If you are an active PPA user and rely on third party repositories, it's best to wait a month or so before you proceed with installing this release. It often takes a bit for third party developers to get caught up and release packages for new versions so hold off a bit before proceeding.Overall, I'd say this felt like a typical Ubuntu release, at least from a desktop perspective. Following on from the <a href="/dotcms-enterprise-cloud-released/" target="_blank">recent release of dotCMS Enterprise Cloud</a>, dotCMS has unveiled version 3.3 of their platform.

dotCMS is a platform with a track record in the enterprise market, and can be utilized either on-premise or via the cloud. It was also the winner of the <a href="/2014-critics-choice-award-winner-best-cloud-cms-for-smb/" target="_blank">2014 Critics' Choice Award for Best Cloud CMS for SMB</a>.
Here's what's new with dotCMS 3.3.
<h2>Cold Hard Cache</h2>
With 3.3, dotCMS has seriously revamped the way it handles caching.
First and foremost, the new advanced caching schemes with external cache are designed for use in high availability and low latency situations.
Here's a breakdown of the new features, which aim to keep systems running better, faster and with fewer downtimes.
<ul>
<li>Supports four caching providers: Guava, H2 (disk), Timed Memory, Redis (external cache service)</li>
<li>Supports multi region caching</li>
<li>Ability to add/define your own cache providers via plugin</li>
<li>Configurable cache chains</li>
<li>View cache region settings by name in dotCMS: System -&gt; Maintenance and press the Refresh Stats button</li>
<li>Note that configuration of cache chains and providers are available only in dotCMS Enterprise licensed editions. DotCMS Community editions use the default GuavaCache provider</li>
</ul>
dotCSMS Enterprise customers will find that, with dotCMS 3.3, a Redis Cache Provider is now included out of the box. <a href="http://redis.io/">Redis</a> allows offloading cache to networked servers or a cluster of servers.
The benefits of this approach include:
<ul>
<li>Redis caching servers can be scaled independently and at runtime in order to add or remove cache capacity and can improve performance</li>
<li>External caching with Redis removes the dotCMS cache from the Java heap, which lowers the dotCMS memory requirement and may significantly speed up Java GC</li>
<li>Cache “puts” and “removes” are network-wide</li>
<li>There is no external syncing mechanisms that can fail</li>
<li>dotCMS servers can be restarted with their caches fully loaded which is really cool, and speeds restarts which is most welcome in most situations.</li>
<li>Supports master/slave environments – read from one, write to another</li>
</ul>
<h2>Push Publishing</h2>
dotCMS 3.3 also brings about added stability to the platform's push publishing feature, thanks to a range of bug and use-case fixes.
The integrity checker has also been enhanced and the dotCMS team has added the ability to directly push languages and add languages to bundles.
So all in all, it's an update that's highly focused on improving the caching capbilities of dotCMS, which enterprise customers will be happy to hear about.
