With the People's Choice portion of our CMS Awards out of the way, it's now time to start announcing the judge's picks for the winners of the 2014 Critics' Choice CMS Awards.
To get things started, we're going to begin by announcing the winner in the Most Promising CMS category.

Before I do so, however, I thought I'd explain why we have this category in the first place. The most promising CMS is, in my mind, one that is succeeding in a way that is different from other products on the market. This could be capitalizing on a previously untapped niche in the market or perhaps just producing a unique CMS in general that people haven't seen before.

Webydo Unveils "Pixel Perfect Responsive Editor"

Kentico <a href="http://devnet.kentico.com/articles/kentico-8-2-official-release-date" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">has announced the release date of Kentico 8.2</a> — January 6th, 2015.
With offices in the United States, United Kingdom and Czech Republic, Kentico is a respected Enterprise Web Content Management System and Customer Experience Management solution. It offers an impressive feature set including website building, intranets, community sites and e-commerce solutions, all either on-premise or in the cloud.
<a href="/kentico-8.1-release-date-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kentico 8.1 was recently released</a> in late August, and that version brought about its own set of features, including SharePoint integration, social marketing improvements, and more. Here's what version 8.2 has in store.
<h2>WCM, eCommerce &amp; Marketing Improvements</h2>
The last hotfix for Kentico 8.1 (8.1.17) will be released on December 19th. From thereon, we will release hotfixes for Kentico 8.2 only.

Kentico 8.2 Release Date Set

<a href="http://virtuemart.net/" target="_blank">VirtueMart</a>, one of the most successful eCommerce solutions for <a href="http://www.joomla.org/" target="_blank">Joomla</a>, has just released its newest version, VirtueMart 3.
Compatible with Joomla 2.5 and Joomla 3, the open-source eCommerce solution has undergone “thousands of man hours” in order to make it compatible with Joomla 3, clean up the architecture, increase stability and performance.
VirtueMart concede that, “looking superficially at VirtueMart 3 it looks and works almost as VM2”. However, they say that the feeling and handling of the platform is different. Let's take a look at what they mean.
<h2>Smoother Shopping</h2>
This new update brings about enhanced speed, add to cart buttons in the category browse view, and a simpler checkout system. VirtueMart merchants will notice the enhanced backend speed and simplified custom fields, along with many more tools to fulfill the wishes and needs of customers.

With time, I can see Ghost becoming a serious player in the blogging world – if it isn't so already.You can opt to either self host Ghost, or make use of their cloud-hosted solution, Ghost Pro.<h2>3. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.movabletype.com/purchase.html?dc=MTCMSdeal">MovableType</a></h2>Although founded in 2001, two years before WordPress, I like to think of MoveableType as WordPress’ little cousin. Of course, I mean that in the nicest way possible.MoveableType's interface reminds me of WordPress, and in many ways, it works and feels similar to the big daddy of blogging. It has its own merits too though, including  a wide range of plugins and templates.It also has multi-site publishing capability across multiple domains or subdomains, all manageable within its user friendly interface. This makes it a powerful and scalable tool for those looking to create large blogs and magazine websites.With the likes of HuffingtonPost and Gothamist within its user base, it's easy to recommend MovableType to those looking for a platform to house a large blogging project.<h2>4. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.squarespace.com/">Squarespace</a></h2>If you’re looking for a platform that takes out the guesswork, Squarespace is for you.Squarespace is a cloud-hosted website builder with stunning templates which are great for building sleek, professional websites – including blogs. In fact, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmB1CTteAuc">a Squarespace blog can easily be created in just a few minutes</a>.There’s no need to research plugins or look elsewhere for good templates, as Squarespace supplies it all for you. Plus, it has an awesome visual editor which lets you edit your website simply by clicking on different page areas.The downside is that Squarespace isn’t ideal if you’re looking to publish hundreds of blog posts, as blog and media management isn’t very robust.<h2>5. <a target="_blank" href="http://www.typepad.com/">TypePad</a></h2>Like MoveableType, Typepad has been around for a while, and it's a reliable option more than anything else. It's known to be a very secure platform, one that hackers tend to avoid.It is a hosted solution, comes with integrated analytics, easy design customization features and a relatively small but highly dedicated community. Joining Typepad kind of feels like you joined a writers club, especially since all Typepad blogs have the chance to be featured on the Typepad website. It feels very inclusive and homely.The downside here is that for its limited functionality, it comes with some fairly heaving pricing. TypePad isn't exactly much of a looker compared to other platforms either.Honourable mentions, in no particular order, go out to; <a target="_blank" href="https://ellislab.com/expressionengine">ExpressionEngine</a>, <a target="_blank" href="http://dropplets.com/">Dropplets</a>,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.silvrback.com/">Silvrback</a>, LightCMS, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.weebly.com/">Weebly</a> and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.wix.com/">Wix</a>.<h2>“But What About MY Favourite CMS?”</h2>Many of you will now be wondering why I didn’t include the likes of Blogger, Tumblr, Joomla and Drupal somewhere on this list. I can already hear the screeches of, “How are they not even honourably mentioned?!”.The fact is, Blogger and Tumblr aren’t considered robust enough to be worthy of competing with WordPress, Ghost and the rest on a professional scale. If you want to blog about how much you love your kittens, they may be viable options. But I’d never recommend them to serious bloggers.As for Joomla and Drupal, The former is clunky and not exactly optimized for blogging, whilst the latter is far better suited to large-scale websites. Neither belong on this list, despite having their own uses and strengths.So, with that being said, I’d recommend sticking to the names listed above. Each one is respected, easy to use, feature rich and optimized for being your blogging playground.

<a href="/products/squarespace" target="_blank">Squarespace</a> and Brace.io have both announced their plan to merge, with the Brace.io team being absorbed into the Squarespace ranks.
Brace.io is a relatively new static website CMS with DropBox integration acting as an FTP, fast deployment, sleek templates, and some interesting tools and features including forms, charts, and tags.
Squarespace is of course one of the world's most widely used and respected website builders. Much like its competitors, it has a focus on simplicity, yet is still manages to pack a functional punch – maybe now even more so, thanks to the boost of acquiring Brace.io. Let's take a look at how this merge came about.
<h2>Squarespace &amp; Brace</h2>

We don't know exactly what this move means yet, but here's what we do know so far.

Today, we’re happy to announce that Brace.io is joining us here at Squarespace. Brace, had this to say via their blog announcement:
<blockquote>“In the end we feel that our vision aligns closely with that of Squarespace. They care about developer experience, as evidenced by the <a href="http://www.squarespace.com/developer">developer platform</a> they launched with Squarespace 6. Together, we hope to create the best experience possible for developers on an online publishing platform.”</blockquote>
So, this move seems to be focused on improving the Squarespace developer platform. But I have a feeling that Squarespace wants to benefit from this move in other ways.
<h2>A Hint of Things to Come?</h2>
As you can see from the quotes above, neither Squarespace or Brace.io has given away too much of the details of the deal.
But Squarespace hasn't made this move in vain, and so it will be interesting to see how the acquisition of Brace.io impacts future updates to existing features, as well as if we see any brand new features which Brace.io previously had on offer.
It would be logical to assume that Squarespace plans on poaching some of Brace.io's existing features, particularly their forms, charts, and tags tools.
