6 eCommerce Platforms That Integrate With Existing Websites

grainne-logue

Five months after the initial release of Kajona 4, the first update v4.1 focuses on simplicity.
Besides regular bug fixes and optimizations the new insite editor is the most remarkable feature of the new release. Introduces with version 4.0, the insite editor allows to change and format content directly within the page layout. The new editor in 4.1 extends the functionality, offering not only markup functions such as bold or italic, but even the possibility te edit links and images directly.
Content-editors are now able to work in the page layout exclusively while the switch to the comfortable backend is still possible, but no longer required for most of the editors' tasks.

When it comes to developing new modules, a newly introduced module structure reduces the efforts to develop a new module. The new approach is the result of a developer-sprint in early 2013 and is based on annotations rather than complex source code. All relevant methods and elements of a module are generated by analyzing and interpreting the annotations provided by the developer. This ensures the maintainability of a module and reduces the expenditure of time to develop a new module.
Since Kajona 4.1 brings several bug fixes, security updates, and updates for compatibility with current web browsers and web server systems, the upgrade to 4.1 is recommended to all users. The update is available and recommended via integrated package management.
The download of the system is possible on the project's website <a href="http://www.kajona.de">http://www.kajona.de</a>.

<a href="https://adobe.com/" target="_blank">Adobe</a> have adjusted their Digital Publishing Suite with some new features aimed at making the lives of Marketers easier.
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/dps_blog_launch1640x0-is.jpg" />
This new version of the Adobe DPS is titled the “Adobe Digital Publishing Solution”. Which, conviniently, also fits the acronym.
From continuous publishing to new ROI measurement features, the all new Adobe DPS is built more for the marketer than it is for the publisher, reflecting the marketing-centric attitude that the enterprise market is leaning towards.
<h2>Adobe Tips Hat to Marketers &amp; Designers</h2>
Here's a feature breakdown of the all new Adobe DPS.
<ul>
<li>Continuous Publishing. With capabilities to push fresh content live, readers now have more reasons to return frequently to DPS apps for fresh content and updates. DPS, as part of AEM Apps, offers brands seamless control over content. The solution integrates with other content management systems, such as Drupal and WordPress, and HTML design tools from Adobe and others, all while still supporting InDesign CC based workflows.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Engaging Experiences. Apps created with Adobe DPS deliver high-impact content to audiences in a uniquely intuitive way. With the new collections feature, content is now grouped together and delivered to smartphones and tablets on iOS, Android and Windows. DPS also offers all of the app services needed to acquire and retain audiences, including push notifications; in-app messaging; intuitive search and content discovery; and social network integration.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Measuring and Delivering ROI. Access built-in analytics, powered by Adobe Analytics Essentials for Publications, part of Adobe Marketing Cloud, which capture online and offline data and deliver retention analysis, acquisition tracking, funnel conversion and more. Adobe DPS also supports a variety of payment options for apps, such as single purchases, subscriptions and all-access models for publishers and enterprises who want to monetize content.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Built for Business. Adobe DPS now provides a new accounts control system that has been elevated to the enterprise level, enabling organizers to assign permissions to each person involved in the app creation process, including both employees and outside agencies.</li>
</ul>
A 30-day free trial of Adobe Digital Publishing Suite <a href="https://trial.publish.adobe.com/" target="_blank">can be found here</a>.

Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Tweaked In Favour of Marketers

To complete our three-part interview series with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.prestashop.com/">PrestaShop's</a> Director of Product Marketing Sabrina Marechal, we're looking towards the future of the now widely popular eCommerce solution.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/gi_149548_vertical-logo-2015.png" />PrestaShop powers over 250,000 online stores, and boasts a thriving community of users and contributors.Part one of this interview series saw Sabrina Marechal and I discuss <a href="/the-prestashop-user-experience-an-interview-with-sabrina-marechal/">PrestaShop's user experience</a>. As for part two, we both got into the <a href="/prestashop-statistics-an-interview-with-sabrina-marechal/">statistical prowess of the platform</a>.Now though, let's take a look at what PrestaShop users can hope for going forward.<h2>Introducing Sabrina Marechal</h2>Sabrina Marechal joined the PrestaShop team back in November 2007 as a Communications specialist.As PrestaShop expanded, she built a Marketing and Communications department within the company gathering 20+ team members. By early 2011, Sabrina has moved to PrestaShop's US office in order to create a Marketing Department responsible for PrestaShop's expansion in the Americas.Today, with a fully cross-border Marketing team, Sabrina now focuses on expanding the platform's area of Product Marketing.<h2>The Interview</h2>KI: PrestaShop 1.6 and PrestaShop cloud were two big milestones. The idea to bring PrestaShop in the cloud to the market for free was (and still is) an exciting idea. What drove PrestaShop to want to offer something so unique?SM: Our mission! We want to make ecommerce accessible to everyone, and give anyone, anywhere in the world the ability to launch an online store with no barriers, technical or financial.Usually, the technological barrier is pretty big for a beginner willing to use an Open source software (download, install on a server…) and the financial barrier seems unfair to us – we believe that the value doesn’t come from the software but from what users do with it.KI: It will be hard to top the unveiling of a totally free cloud-based platform, but what's the next big thing that PrestaShop users should look forward to?SM: We’re loyal to our philosophy to offer a product always simpler to use, efficient, offering the best practices and latest trends. We gathered lots of our merchants’ feedback which guides us to where we’re going next. PrestaShop Cloud is only the beginning ?KI: The PrestaShop community is large, diverse and busy. Has PrestaShop gathered any ideas from the community which they are looking to implement at some stage?SM: We did even better than that: we recently launched <a target="_blank" href="https://addons.prestashop.com/en/integration-fund">a $1,000,000 integration fund</a> to support our Community’s projects to develop local modules for their countries. With this fund, we help cover the initial costs of module development to encourage our Community to develop region -specific modules that are easily passed over.KI: PrestaShop 1.6.1 is in the works, is there a release date in mind? What will the update bring?SM: PrestaShop 1.6.1.0 was released on Thursday last week, and it brings amazing performance improvements, options to improve the legal compliance of online stores selling to Europe, improved readability and navigation, and a back-office rebranding to welcome Preston, our new mascot, into the software.KI: The Internet-Of-things is becoming more and more of a thing. Many platforms have already begun work on smart watch apps, for example. How is PrestaShop planning to move with the times?Innovation is a strong focus for us, which is why we recently opened a PrestaShop Labs in San Francisco. There, we are focusing on new emerging trends and ways we can implement them into our software and ecosystem.<h3>PrestaShop's Future: What's Your Take?</h3>When it comes to the future of PrestaShop, Sabrina Marechal is certainly full of enthusiasm. Plus, if recent movements and updates are anything to go by, the future of PrestaShop looks bright. I for one, am optimistic about the platform's role in the eCommerce market.What's your take? Let us know in the comments below, or share your views through the CMS Forum.Also, be sure to find out more about <a href="/products/prestashop">PrestaShop through our CMS Directory</a>.

The Future of PrestaShop: An Interview With Sabrina Marechal

<a href="https://www.phpfox.com/" target="_blank"> PHPFox</a>, the widely popular social networking CMS, has rebranded. From here on out, <a href="http://moxi9.com/announcement/welcome-to-moxi9" target="_blank"> PHPFox goes by the name of Moxi9</a>.
Moxi9 has been around for a number of years as PHPFox, giving users the ability to create unique online communities which can include many of the features found on sites like Facebook and MySpace.
Although I personally like the sound of Moxi9, users and potential users of the platform will be interested to hear that this rebranding brings about more than just a name change.
<h2>PHPFox 4, Pricing &amp; Support</h2>
The PHPFox/Moxi9 team have announced that they are currently working on v4, which is based on a stripped down version of the v3 engine. They say that:
<blockquote>“We have removed many of the default modules that are included with v3 and our new pricing takes this into account, which we will get into below. Our goal with v4 is to develop a strong and stable core, with a brand new way to deliver Apps, Themes and Language Packs to you by using Unity [a feature which will allow you to install Apps, Themes and/or Language Packages with no need to upload files or have developers access your server].”</blockquote>
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/phpfox700x0.png" alt="PHPfox" />
Furthermore, the Moxi9 team have unveiled some pricing and support changes, which alters the way users pay for support.
Firstly, the PHPFox product itself has been reduced in price from $299,to $99. A sizeable reduction. However, support options must now be purchased separately via the following two plans:
<ol>
<li> Starter Support Plan – This comes with a 48 hour response time during a 5 day working week, with 30 responses per month at $19 per month.</li>
<li> Pro Support Plan – This comes with a 12 hour response time during a 5 day working week, with 60 responses per month at $49 per month.</li>
</ol>
Also, a Q/A section is currently in private beta, a place where members of Unity or those with active support plans can get assistance from other members and company agents.
For all the details on these announcements, along with comments on the future of PHPFox, check out Moxi9's recent blog announcement.

Inheriting its extensibility and content management capabilities from <a href="http://www.jahia.com/products/digital-factory" target="_blank">Digital Factory</a>, Jahia Portal Factory has everything it needs to tackle even the most demanding digital projects.
Here's a look at all the key features of Portal Factory:

<li>A new non-intrusive integration for enterprise legacy applications: Portal Factory allows for the integration of legacy applications without having to modify them in any way. Regardless of the language the application had been developed with.Marketing teams can produce the content their market requires at the time it needs it, while IT teams can decide and plan to work on the application at their own pace, according to their resources, security and stability constraints.
This server side integration has been built with the new open source framework <a href="http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=70112415&amp;msgid=349585&amp;act=LMSD&amp;c=870976&amp;destination=http%3A%2F%2Fesigate.org%2F" target="_blank">Esigate</a>, initiated by Smile and Capgemini, two leading system integrators, and to which Jahia is now a committer.</li>

Regarding the impending launch of Jahia Portal Factory, Elie Auvray, CEO of Jahia, had this to say:
<blockquote>“As announced during our first international user conference, JahiaOne, in early February this year, Portal Factory will be available late June thanks to the work done with our community of Customer and Partner.
In its former version, our CMS solution – Digital Factory –  offered portal features that needed refinement to meet the scope of a complete Portal offering. The conception and development of both the External Data Provider and the Esigate integration, associated with the extension of the personal dashboards exceed everyone’s expectations.”</blockquote>

Jahia Reveal Portal Factory Release Date

<img title="miggle" src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2021/07/miggle-150x150_ipcxew.png" alt="miggle" style="max-width:150px" />
From the release announcement: As a business miggle.co.uk is fully committed to using and supporting open source software wherever it can.  We believe open source solutions, when implemented effectively, offer customers and users the best possible options in terms of balancing unique requirements, with leveraged R&amp;D, in an environment where BCP (business continuity planning) issues are largely taken care of.  It would be counter to our believe in that approach to continue to keep our CMS, <a href="http://miggle.co.uk/open-source-cms/">miggleCMS</a>, as a proprietary tool.  Nor would doing so be in the best interests of the BCP requirements of our clients who use it.
The world does not need another content management system (CMS).  I truly believe that.  But, like many web businesses we found ourselves in a position three years ago where it made sense for us to have our own CMS to provide a solution to small businesses, which we didn’t feel we could easily or efficiently achieve with what was available at the time, to the flexibility we wanted.  Three years on, we’ve now used miggleCMS on over 30 sites, from simple brochure ware sites, to e-commerce solutions with stock control.
No single CMS will ever fulfil the needs of all web requirements.  It’s often a case, when choosing a potential CMS, of looking at product requirements, distinguishing between ‘must haves’ and ‘nice to haves’ and making the appropriate trade-offs if required.  Because of this, we don’t think there’s any more developments we need to make right now to miggleCMS, because to do so, in our opinion, would put us on a path where basically we would be starting to re-write Joomla.  Which is pointless.  At that point, we’d be better off just using Joomla.  But by opening miggleCMS up as an open source product, our opinion on that becomes just one opinion.  Others may look at our code and think there are areas in which it could be improved or developed on.  Maybe add an Ajax front end, maybe a deeper depth of categorisations, maybe the addition of payment provider support beyond Paypal?   Also, because pages can have modules attached to them, there’s scope for this to have additional functionality added without the need for a full re-write.  Modules could be written in the same sort of way plug-ins are for WordPress.  By throwing this over the fence, we leave it to the open source development community to decide.
The final reason we’ve done it is because miggleCMS has been a useful tool in helping small businesses, with 5-10 pages, get decent looking sites online cost effectively.  Now that as a business we’re moving away from that market, beyond providing existing clients with better BCP options, this CMS, like so many others, acts as a code base to which you just need to BYOD – Bring your own designer!
So, if you’ve not clicked through already, take a look at <a href="http://miggle.co.uk/open-source-cms/">miggleCMS</a>.

miggle.co.uk launch miggleCMS, their PHP/MySQL content management system under an open source license

It's one thing to feel overwhelmed with the task of finding and selecting a CMS, but what about finding a unique look to build your site off of? This is where themes and templates come in. Today, I'm going to share with you one of the places I recommend checking out in your search for a template or theme to use as a base to start from.
One of the most popular (and largest) marketplaces for CMS themes and CMS templates is the ever popular <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/themeforest">Themeforest</a>. Themeforest has been around for a number of years and has a very impressive selection of themes and templates for all kinds of systems. For example, at Themeforest you can find:
<ul>
<li>WordPress themes</li>
<li>Joomla Templates</li>
<li>Drupal Themes</li>
<li>Concrete5 Themes</li>
<li>ExpressionEngine Themes</li>
<li>Tumblr Themes</li>
<li>Blogger Themes</li>
<li>Magento Themes</li>
<li>Shopify Themes</li>
<li>OpenCart Themes</li>
<li>osCommerce Themes</li>
<li>PrestaShop Themes</li>
<li>Zen Cart Themes</li>
</ul>
That's just SOME of the types you can find there. I personally have Themeforest bookmarked and check it every few days to see what type of themes and templates are being released (I have a bit of an obsession with themes..)
 <img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2021/07/themeforest-620x546_vmyrk3.jpg" alt="themeforest" />
The selection is so large that there are currently over 9,300 different types of themes, templates and even plugins available on their site. There are also a number of Themeforest contributors that have developed their own custom HTML templates and themes, some with their own integrated custom content management systems, complete with administrative interfaces.
It's a great place to start from as well. If you aren't sure what your CMS might be capable of or are curious as to what you could accomplish visually with a specific CMS, you can browse Themeforest's selection to get an idea as to what some people have come up with. Obviously, it's not going to necessarily showcase every possible setup and look but it's a good place to start from for sure.
If you are a theme developer or template developer and want to make some money, you can use Themeforest as well to sell your products to their enormous user-base. I highly recommend taking a look at what they have to offer and seeing if anything fits your needs.

Where to Find CMS Themes & CMS Templates

Zyke CMS is a brand new and very basic CMS from development firm, Custom Dev. We grabbed a copy of their first version and ran through a quick test of the software to see what it was made of.
The install process is very straight forward and requires simply uploading the contents of the downloaded zip file to your server. This is a PHP/MySQL CMS by the way so ensure your host supports this prior to grabbing a copy.
Once you've uploaded the contents, visit http://www.yourdomain.com/install to kick off the installation.
Install consists of one screen:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2021/07/zykecms-1_pfygkj.jpg" alt="zykecms-1" />
Simply enter your details and you are done. Then all that is required is to delete the install directory from the server (for security purposes).
You start with the most basic of sites:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2021/07/zykecms-2-580x207_qljgmz.jpg" alt="zykecms-2" />
You can then access the admin section by appending /admin.php to your domain and you will see:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2021/07/zykecms-3-580x304_nnsrvu.jpg" alt="zykecms-3" />
There's not much more to the system at the moment. Adjusting the main site details gives you a screen like this with very basic configuration options:

Introduction to Zyke CMS

With the release of Joomla 1.6, we decided now would be a good time to do a followup to our <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/joomla-1-5-review/">previous review</a>.
Installation hasn't changed and is the same number of steps so we won't cover this during our review. One thing that would be nice to see in future versions and that we would have liked to see in this release would be the automatic removal of the /installation directory at the end of the install. Right now, the installer expects the user to delete this when removing it automatically would make things slightly more convenient.  This isn't a major issue at all, just a simple nice to have that would be good to see in future releases.
The default theme that has been present for years in Joomla releases has been changed to a much plainer one:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/phpfox-580x421_f7kerk.png" />
I couldn't find any mention as to why this was changed in the release notes but it has been. I personally welcome the change, it's nice to see something different for a change. Whether you think it's actually better or not is up to you.
The administration interface has a slightly newer feel to it and some minor changes visually:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/percussion_wykes-199x300_xisnoq.jpg" alt="joomla 1.6 - 2" />
When compared to 1.5, you can see there have been some changes to the default icons such as the addition of the extension manager and a new Edit Profile icon. For comparison purposes, here's a screenshot of the 1.5 admin interface:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/joomla-1_5-1-580x258.png" alt="joomla 1.5 - 1" />
Once of the most touted new features to this release is the addition of much needed ACL functionality. As you add new articles, you'll notice the new section below the editor:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/f772689190b08068bff2c0c6dd8db184_wix_mp_fiuz2g.png" alt="joomla 1.6 - 3" />
It's great to see this level of customization has been added and it puts Joomla in a much better position to contend with some of the other options (both commercial and open source) that are on the market today.
The settings are very straight forward and easy to configure and most users should find their comfort level fairly quickly with regards to setting them up.
Users do not have to configure these individually, however. In the Article Manager, when clicking on the Options button at the top of the screen, you can set defaults for all articles as well:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/cmsc2i-300x145_qgqd2r.jpg" alt="joomla 1.6 - 4" />
There is also a new button that allows editors to save their article and immediately start a new one. A simple addition but a welcome, time saving one.
ACL can also be managed on a per category level, per module and also on individual media itself so there's definitely a solid level of granularity to the controls users now have.
Thankfully, the development team has seen fit to get rid of the Sections altogether. This is a very welcome change and has been a major annoyance (in my opinion) for a number of years. No longer is this an issue.
Moving on to the menu management module, another new addition has been made available. Users can now see which modules are linked to each specific menu. This is a very useful addition and seems to be on mark with the development teams goals for this release which include improving usability and making the system easier to use:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/joomla-1_6-5.png" alt="joomla 1.6 - 5" />
User management also shows a few new additions. Namely, the ACL functionality is present (obviously) and there is also a new function to set a default backend template style. This is a handy addition and allows the designer/developer the additional ability to further customize the experience on a per user basis.
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/joomla-1_6-6-580x402.png" alt="joomla 1.6 - 6" />
Access levels and groups are a new addition as well and can be found under the new user menu:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/joomla-1_6-8.png" alt="joomla 1.6 - 8" />
As you can see, there is also the ability to mass mail users from within the backend. This is especially handy and works like a charm:
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/joomla-1_6-9-580x272.png" alt="joomla 1.6 - 9" />
Under the components menu, there is a new Redirect option which allows administrators to configure 404 redirects on a per item basis or in bulk. No more 404 pages for users who follow an old link that has changed.
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/cmsc3i-580x262_hixvgn.jpg" />
Moving to the management of extensions, there is now the ability to update extensions and find updates.
<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/joomla-1_6-7-580x93.png" alt="Joomla 1.6 -7" />
For more info on this functionality, here's a video showcasing the new capability:
Developers are also available to distribute multiple modules in a single zip file to easy installation. This is a great time saver for the administrator of the system.
From a template point of view, all core output files are written in XHTML 1.0 Strict. HTML 5 is also supported in Joomla! 1.6 which brings Joomla up to date with current standards. Furthering that, you can easily create minor template variations, which can then be assigned to specific pages on the website.
Overall, I have to say that the Joomla! development team has done an outstanding job improving the system with this release. Joomla 1.6 is a significant improvement and brings with it functionality that lifts it to a new level of competitiveness with commercial competitors.
There is no doubt that the developers were focused on improving usability and ease of use. Their commitment to doing so is very evident and I strongly recommend Joomla! as a viable alternative to those looking for a powerful content management solution.
The Joomla! development team should pat themselves on the back for a job well done.
I've no doubt there are additional changes that I didn't catch. Share your experiences in the comments.

SageFrame 2.1 users can now use Open IDs like Facebook, Yahoo, etc. to login to the SageFrame. They can perform cache management, look at the site analytics, priorities events on system startups, schedule events, create and manage multi-portals, and make their sites multi-lingual. Furthermore, SageFrame users can customize their page by adding preset templates to their site. While adding such templates, the original data associated with the templates is also fetched. Another notable improvement that SageFrame 2.1 includes is that the pages built on SageFrame 2.1 are compatible with both handheld devices and PCs.
There are strong incentives for SageFrame 2.0 users to migrate to SageFrame 2.1, as this SageFrame version is truly built for developers, crafted for designers and developed for site administrators and comes with several powerful and handy features. Further, it comes with several bug fixes and security updates.
