<a href="https://www.phpfox.com/" target="_blank"> PHPFox</a>, the widely popular social networking CMS, has rebranded. From here on out, <a href="http://moxi9.com/announcement/welcome-to-moxi9" target="_blank"> PHPFox goes by the name of Moxi9</a>.
Moxi9 has been around for a number of years as PHPFox, giving users the ability to create unique online communities which can include many of the features found on sites like Facebook and MySpace.
Although I personally like the sound of Moxi9, users and potential users of the platform will be interested to hear that this rebranding brings about more than just a name change.
<h2>PHPFox 4, Pricing &amp; Support</h2>
The PHPFox/Moxi9 team have announced that they are currently working on v4, which is based on a stripped down version of the v3 engine. They say that:
<blockquote>“We have removed many of the default modules that are included with v3 and our new pricing takes this into account, which we will get into below. Our goal with v4 is to develop a strong and stable core, with a brand new way to deliver Apps, Themes and Language Packs to you by using Unity [a feature which will allow you to install Apps, Themes and/or Language Packages with no need to upload files or have developers access your server].”</blockquote>

Furthermore, the Moxi9 team have unveiled some pricing and support changes, which alters the way users pay for support.
Firstly, the PHPFox product itself has been reduced in price from $299,to $99. A sizeable reduction. However, support options must now be purchased separately via the following two plans:

<li> Starter Support Plan – This comes with a 48 hour response time during a 5 day working week, with 30 responses per month at $19 per month.</li>
<li> Pro Support Plan – This comes with a 12 hour response time during a 5 day working week, with 60 responses per month at $49 per month.</li>
</ol>
Also, a Q/A section is currently in private beta, a place where members of Unity or those with active support plans can get assistance from other members and company agents.

The Future of PrestaShop: An Interview With Sabrina Marechal

Zyke CMS is a brand new and very basic CMS from development firm, Custom Dev. We grabbed a copy of their first version and ran through a quick test of the software to see what it was made of.
The install process is very straight forward and requires simply uploading the contents of the downloaded zip file to your server. This is a PHP/MySQL CMS by the way so ensure your host supports this prior to grabbing a copy.
Once you've uploaded the contents, visit http://www.yourdomain.com/install to kick off the installation.
Install consists of one screen:

Simply enter your details and you are done. Then all that is required is to delete the install directory from the server (for security purposes).
You start with the most basic of sites:

You can then access the admin section by appending /admin.php to your domain and you will see:

Introduction to Zyke CMS

It's one thing to feel overwhelmed with the task of finding and selecting a CMS, but what about finding a unique look to build your site off of? This is where themes and templates come in. Today, I'm going to share with you one of the places I recommend checking out in your search for a template or theme to use as a base to start from.
One of the most popular (and largest) marketplaces for CMS themes and CMS templates is the ever popular <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/themeforest">Themeforest</a>. Themeforest has been around for a number of years and has a very impressive selection of themes and templates for all kinds of systems. For example, at Themeforest you can find:

<li>Concrete5 Themes</li>
<li>ExpressionEngine Themes</li>

That's just SOME of the types you can find there. I personally have Themeforest bookmarked and check it every few days to see what type of themes and templates are being released (I have a bit of an obsession with themes..)

The selection is so large that there are currently over 9,300 different types of themes, templates and even plugins available on their site. There are also a number of Themeforest contributors that have developed their own custom HTML templates and themes, some with their own integrated custom content management systems, complete with administrative interfaces.
It's a great place to start from as well. If you aren't sure what your CMS might be capable of or are curious as to what you could accomplish visually with a specific CMS, you can browse Themeforest's selection to get an idea as to what some people have come up with. Obviously, it's not going to necessarily showcase every possible setup and look but it's a good place to start from for sure.
If you are a theme developer or template developer and want to make some money, you can use Themeforest as well to sell your products to their enormous user-base. I highly recommend taking a look at what they have to offer and seeing if anything fits your needs.

While we tend to share our own opinions on this site frequently in the form of our various CMS reviews, it's nice to hear what the rest of the community thinks as well. For this reason, today we're hoping to drive some discussion about what CMS you use and why?

KnowledgeTree Announces Sponsorship of Fifth Annual 2010 Open Source Think Tank

With the release of Joomla 1.6, we decided now would be a good time to do a followup to our <a href="https://www.cmscritic.com/joomla-1-5-review/">previous review</a>.
Installation hasn't changed and is the same number of steps so we won't cover this during our review. One thing that would be nice to see in future versions and that we would have liked to see in this release would be the automatic removal of the /installation directory at the end of the install. Right now, the installer expects the user to delete this when removing it automatically would make things slightly more convenient.  This isn't a major issue at all, just a simple nice to have that would be good to see in future releases.
The default theme that has been present for years in Joomla releases has been changed to a much plainer one:

I couldn't find any mention as to why this was changed in the release notes but it has been. I personally welcome the change, it's nice to see something different for a change. Whether you think it's actually better or not is up to you.
The administration interface has a slightly newer feel to it and some minor changes visually:

When compared to 1.5, you can see there have been some changes to the default icons such as the addition of the extension manager and a new Edit Profile icon. For comparison purposes, here's a screenshot of the 1.5 admin interface:

Once of the most touted new features to this release is the addition of much needed ACL functionality. As you add new articles, you'll notice the new section below the editor:

It's great to see this level of customization has been added and it puts Joomla in a much better position to contend with some of the other options (both commercial and open source) that are on the market today.
The settings are very straight forward and easy to configure and most users should find their comfort level fairly quickly with regards to setting them up.
Users do not have to configure these individually, however. In the Article Manager, when clicking on the Options button at the top of the screen, you can set defaults for all articles as well:

There is also a new button that allows editors to save their article and immediately start a new one. A simple addition but a welcome, time saving one.
ACL can also be managed on a per category level, per module and also on individual media itself so there's definitely a solid level of granularity to the controls users now have.
Thankfully, the development team has seen fit to get rid of the Sections altogether. This is a very welcome change and has been a major annoyance (in my opinion) for a number of years. No longer is this an issue.
Moving on to the menu management module, another new addition has been made available. Users can now see which modules are linked to each specific menu. This is a very useful addition and seems to be on mark with the development teams goals for this release which include improving usability and making the system easier to use:

User management also shows a few new additions. Namely, the ACL functionality is present (obviously) and there is also a new function to set a default backend template style. This is a handy addition and allows the designer/developer the additional ability to further customize the experience on a per user basis.

Access levels and groups are a new addition as well and can be found under the new user menu:

As you can see, there is also the ability to mass mail users from within the backend. This is especially handy and works like a charm:

Under the components menu, there is a new Redirect option which allows administrators to configure 404 redirects on a per item basis or in bulk. No more 404 pages for users who follow an old link that has changed.

Moving to the management of extensions, there is now the ability to update extensions and find updates.

Developers are also available to distribute multiple modules in a single zip file to easy installation. This is a great time saver for the administrator of the system.
From a template point of view, all core output files are written in XHTML 1.0 Strict. HTML 5 is also supported in Joomla! 1.6 which brings Joomla up to date with current standards. Furthering that, you can easily create minor template variations, which can then be assigned to specific pages on the website.
Overall, I have to say that the Joomla! development team has done an outstanding job improving the system with this release. Joomla 1.6 is a significant improvement and brings with it functionality that lifts it to a new level of competitiveness with commercial competitors.
There is no doubt that the developers were focused on improving usability and ease of use. Their commitment to doing so is very evident and I strongly recommend Joomla! as a viable alternative to those looking for a powerful content management solution.
The Joomla! development team should pat themselves on the back for a job well done.

Joomla 1.6 Review

<a href="http://www.braindigit.com/">Braindigit</a> announces the release of SageFrame 2.1, an enhanced version of SageFrame2.0.
SageFrame is a highly extensible CMS, that helps users build their sites, and builds them to perfection. Braindigit Announces the Release of SageFrame 2.1, a Promising Content Management System

From the release announcement: As a business miggle.co.uk is fully committed to using and supporting open source software wherever it can.  We believe open source solutions, when implemented effectively, offer customers and users the best possible options in terms of balancing unique requirements, with leveraged R&amp;D, in an environment where BCP (business continuity planning) issues are largely taken care of.  It would be counter to our believe in that approach to continue to keep our CMS, <a href="http://miggle.co.uk/open-source-cms/">miggleCMS</a>, as a proprietary tool.  Nor would doing so be in the best interests of the BCP requirements of our clients who use it.
The world does not need another content management system (CMS).  I truly believe that.  But, like many web businesses we found ourselves in a position three years ago where it made sense for us to have our own CMS to provide a solution to small businesses, which we didn’t feel we could easily or efficiently achieve with what was available at the time, to the flexibility we wanted.  Three years on, we’ve now used miggleCMS on over 30 sites, from simple brochure ware sites, to e-commerce solutions with stock control.
No single CMS will ever fulfil the needs of all web requirements.  It’s often a case, when choosing a potential CMS, of looking at product requirements, distinguishing between ‘must haves’ and ‘nice to haves’ and making the appropriate trade-offs if required.  Because of this, we don’t think there’s any more developments we need to make right now to miggleCMS, because to do so, in our opinion, would put us on a path where basically we would be starting to re-write Joomla.  Which is pointless.  At that point, we’d be better off just using Joomla.  But by opening miggleCMS up as an open source product, our opinion on that becomes just one opinion.  Others may look at our code and think there are areas in which it could be improved or developed on.  Maybe add an Ajax front end, maybe a deeper depth of categorisations, maybe the addition of payment provider support beyond Paypal?   Also, because pages can have modules attached to them, there’s scope for this to have additional functionality added without the need for a full re-write.  Modules could be written in the same sort of way plug-ins are for WordPress.  By throwing this over the fence, we leave it to the open source development community to decide.
The final reason we’ve done it is because miggleCMS has been a useful tool in helping small businesses, with 5-10 pages, get decent looking sites online cost effectively.  Now that as a business we’re moving away from that market, beyond providing existing clients with better BCP options, this CMS, like so many others, acts as a code base to which you just need to BYOD – Bring your own designer!

The XOOPS development team has announced the release of version 2.5.7.
XOOPS is an acronym of, “eXtensible Object Oriented Portal System”. It's a free open source content management systems (CMS), written in PHP.
It uses a modular architecture allowing users to customize, update and theme their websites. XOOPS is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) making it free to use, modify and redistribute.

Version 2.5.7 is focused on making XOOPS fully compatible with PHP 5.5.x. Furthermore, it brings about some security enhancements, bug fixes, and updates external libraries to their latest versions, including the following:

– jQuery Lightbox to 1.2.3 
– jQuery Form to 3.50.0 
– jQuery Tablesorter to 2.5.11
