The latest beta for the upcoming WordPress 5.0 release is now available for testing. Note that this is a DEVELOPMENT release and not something to install on a production site unless you want to invoke the power of chaos.

The actual production release of WordPress 5.0 is expected around November 19th, pending of course any major issues.

Recently, the founder of the popular Solus distribution of Linux, decided to take some time away from the project for personal reasons. Sadly, it appears as though he has also stopped replying to the members of the development team he helped form and has basically disappeared.
As a result, the <a href="https://www.patreon.com/solus">Patreon account</a> which numerous people have contributed to and that was, at one point, over $2000 monthly in contributions, has been unusable and inaccessible to the development team. The issue in question here is where has the money been going then?
The team recently <a href="https://getsol.us/2018/10/27/in-full-sail/">posted a call</a> to have those who are donating on Patreon revoke their donations in order to prevent the funds from being locked into an account they have no access to.

Solus Founder Disappears - Team Loses Access to Patreon Funds

IBM announced today that the companies have reached a definitive agreement under which IBM will acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Red Hat for $190.00 per share in cash, representing a total enterprise value of approximately $34 billion.
“The acquisition of Red Hat is a game-changer. It changes everything about the cloud market,” said Ginni Rometty, IBM Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. “IBM will become the world’s #1 hybrid cloud provider, offering companies the only open cloud solution that will unlock the full value of the cloud for their businesses.
“Most companies today are only 20 percent along their cloud journey, renting compute power to cut costs,” she said. “The next 80 percent is about unlocking real business value and driving growth. This is the next chapter of the cloud. It requires shifting business applications to hybrid cloud, extracting more data and optimizing every part of the business, from supply chains to sales.”
“Open source is the default choice for modern IT solutions, and I’m incredibly proud of the role Red Hat has played in making that a reality in the enterprise,” said Jim Whitehurst, President and CEO, Red Hat. “Joining forces with IBM will provide us with a greater level of scale, resources and capabilities to accelerate the impact of open source as the basis for digital transformation and bring Red Hat to an even wider audience – all while preserving our unique culture and unwavering commitment to open source innovation.”
This acquisition brings together the best-in-class hybrid cloud providers and will enable companies to securely move all business applications to the cloud. Companies today are already using multiple clouds. However, research shows that 80 percent of business workloads have yet to move to the cloud, held back by the proprietary nature of today’s cloud market. This prevents portability of data and applications across multiple clouds, data security in a multi-cloud environment and consistent cloud management.
IBM and Red Hat will be strongly positioned to address this issue and accelerate hybrid multi-cloud adoption. Together, they will help clients create cloud-native business applications faster, drive greater portability and security of data and applications across multiple public and private clouds, all with consistent cloud management. In doing so, they will draw on their shared leadership in key technologies, such as Linux, containers, Kubernetes, multi-cloud management, and cloud management and automation.
IBM’s and Red Hat’s partnership has spanned 20 years, with IBM serving as an early supporter of Linux, collaborating with Red Hat to help develop and grow enterprise-grade Linux and more recently to bring enterprise Kubernetes and hybrid cloud solutions to customers. These innovations have become core technologies within IBM’s $19 billion hybrid cloud business. Between them, IBM and Red Hat have contributed more to the open source community than any other organization.
“Today’s announcement is the evolution of our long-standing partnership,” said Rometty. “This includes our joint Hybrid Cloud collaboration announcement in May, a key precursor in our journey to this day.”
With this acquisition, IBM will remain committed to Red Hat’s open governance, open source contributions, participation in the open source community and development model, and fostering its widespread developer ecosystem. In addition, IBM and Red Hat will remain committed to the continued freedom of open source, via such efforts as Patent Promise, GPL Cooperation Commitment, the Open Invention Network and the LOT Network.
IBM and Red Hat also will continue to build and enhance Red Hat partnerships, including those with major cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Alibaba and more, in addition to the IBM Cloud. At the same time, Red Hat will benefit from IBM’s hybrid cloud and enterprise IT scale in helping expand their open source technology portfolio to businesses globally.

Red Hat will continue to be led by Jim Whitehurst and Red Hat’s current management team. Jim Whitehurst also will join IBM’s senior management team and report to Ginni Rometty. IBM intends to maintain Red Hat’s headquarters, facilities, brands and practices.

Financial Details
The acquisition of Red Hat reinforces IBM’s high-value model. It will accelerate IBM’s revenue growth, gross margin and free cash flow within 12 months of closing. It also will support a solid and growing dividend.
The company will continue with a disciplined financial policy and is committed to maintaining strong investment grade credit ratings. The company will target a leverage profile consistent with a mid to high single A credit rating. The company intends to suspend its share repurchase program in 2020 and 2021.
At signing, the company has ample cash, credit and bridge lines to secure the transaction financing. The company intends to close the transaction through a combination of cash and debt.
The acquisition has been approved by the boards of directors of both IBM and Red Hat. It is subject to Red Hat shareholder approval. It also is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. It is expected to close in the latter half of 2019.

Online portfolio website builder Format.com recently launched their latest campaign, <a href="https://www.format.com/classics">Format Classics</a>. By recontextualizing classical figures like Vincent van Gogh, Hokusai, and Helen of Troy, they’re highlighting the idea that sharing work is central to the creative process. Whether work is new or old, it is imperative that creators share in order to learn, grow, inspire—and create more.
The campaign’s concept of making old work new again is echoed in the design decisions. Much of the design takes something familiar and presents it in new ways. On the landing page, the artwork is teased as a way to hint at the historical figures without showing them completely, and as you dive further into the campaign you’re rewarded with more information. 
Since much of the work is well known (everyone with a smartphone will recognize Hokusai’s wave), Format frames the work differently—even down to the way the figures are silhouetted, with shapes that enhance perception through the presentation. Van Gogh is wearing a large, wide-brimmed hat that creates horizontal lines and a square frame is used to emphasize that shape. Hokusai is known for his wave, so he’s framed by a large curve. Helen’s pulled-back hair creates a circular shape, echoed by a circular frame.
The portfolios themselves showcase each figure both visually and through the copy. Van Gogh’s vibrant work contrasts his dry wit, Hokusai takes his role as a creator very seriously, and Helen merges the worlds of high fashion and high followers as a supermodel-meets-Instamodel.

“With van Gogh’s portfolio,” says creative lead Josiah Bilagot, “we felt it was important to showcase his worldview through his work as well as his personality. Many creators choose to show their audience who they are via captions, blogging, or an about page, and we wanted to give van Gogh the same opportunity. 
“We also wanted to show how sharing work is a key element of being a creator. We were deliberate in our selection of paintings—you won’t see Starry Night, for example—to highlight the idea that sharing can breathe new life into old work to encourage creators in any stage to look at their entire body of work through a new lens.”
Hokusai is a master of ukiyo-e, a type of Japanese art that embraces negative space, so his portfolio includes a lot of enforced negative space. “Instead of crowding everything together, there is a lot of intentional space around his work,” says Bilagot, “which is how we think he would do it himself.”
Helen’s profile tackles the question of presenting three-dimensional work in a two-dimensional space. Bilagot solved this by letting the sculptures stand alone, apart from any framing elements, leading with four different angles of her face and giving the audience a glimpse into Helen’s world—which is all about Helen.
Small details go even further to really personalize the portfolios. For van Gogh, the Iris theme is very recta-linear, so his signature is used as the wordmark—similar to the way he might sign one of his paintings. In Helen's case, her personality shines through her integrated Instagram account, while Hokusai's journal includes how he felt about himself as an artist in his own words.

The moderator will work directly with the participants, guiding them through the study and will be there to help facilitate and answer questions if the participant encounters any challenges while completing their tasks.
Unmoderated studies are just as they sound. It’s not monitored or guided, so there’s no one else present during the study except the participant. The participant completes any tasks and answers questions at their own pace, on their own time, at a time and location of their choosing. 
Now that we’ve established the basic differences between the two, let’s dive in to how and when to best apply each strategy based on your research needs.
Live customer research: pros and cons
It helps to think of moderated testing as an interview or a real-time conversation that you’re having with a customer. Everything that you’d do to prepare for that type of interaction is what you’ll need to consider for a moderated study.
Pros
Live moderated testing works best when you need a high level of interaction between you and your customer. For example, if you want to study a prototype with limited functionality, or a complicated process or concept, moderated testing provides you with the interaction you’d need to guide a customer through the study. They’re also an excellent way to conduct interviews, understand the customer journey, and discover pain points.
Live moderated testing is also a great way to observe body language and pick up on subtle behaviors and responses and probe participants for more information if they seem stuck or confused.
They allow you to develop a rapport and have a natural conversation with your customers which helps establish trust, and can lead to candid feedback that might not be possible with other qualitative research methods.
Cons
Because of the additional time and resources, live moderated testing does cost more than unmoderated testing; however, you can reduce some of that cost by conducting remote moderated studies, rather than in-person with Live Conversation. This will give you the opportunity to connect with participants all around the world and reduce the need to block out a dedicated time and space for onsite interviews. Who doesn’t love getting some hours back in their day? 
Unmoderated customer research: Pros and cons
This type of testing is best for validating concepts and designs quickly with a diverse group of customers. Unmoderated testing works great if you have specific questions that you need answered, you need a large sample size, you need feedback quickly, or if you want to observe a customer interacting in their natural environment. 
Pros
The beauty of remote unmoderated testing is that it can be done anytime, anywhere, and you typically have actionable feedback within a day if not sooner. Because a moderator isn’t needed, the cost is typically much lower than moderated tests, which can enable you to run more tests with a wider variety of customers.
Cons
Since unmoderated tests are completely unsupervised, it requires a fixed set of questions and tasks for customers to complete, and doesn’t allow for follow-up questions or clarification. If customers run into issues, have technical difficulties, or don’t understand the tasks or questions, you won’t have the ability to step in and guide them.
At the end of the day, the choice is up to you, but now you can choose the best qualitative test for your customer research needs.
