The recently released Magnolia CMS 5 is the latest iteration of the open source Java CMS from Magnolia International Ltd.  With this release, a number of new features were introduced to make the overall experience a better one all around. Before we dive into what has changed, here's a quick overview video of the new version.

<h2>Touch Inspired Interface for Tablets and PCs</h2>
One particularly nice feature of this new release is the introduction of a touch inspired interface that lets you work with Magnolia using swipe actions. This new interface exists for both PCs and touch devices.

<h2>App Launcher</h2>
Magnolia 5 allows you to navigate between available Apps just like you would on a smartphone device using a springboard. It doesn't stop there, however. You can also create your own Apps to do things like update customer details, access records &amp; more.

<h2>The Pulse</h2>
The Pulse, as it's called, keeps you up-to-date with a continuous activity feed and discreet notifications. From this hub, you can receive updates on content status, comments, requests and warnings, as well as statistics and analytics.

<h2>Favorites</h2>
Magnolia 5 lets you create shortcuts (or favorites) to your most common tasks within the system. Whether it be creating a new website or creating a new offer, you can quickly add these functions to your favorites for future use and quick access. Even shortcuts to simply update your homepage will help you save time, ensure consistency and make it personal to you.

<h2>Digital Asset Management</h2>

Magnolia CMS 5 Overview

WordPress is just a glorified blogging tool. Apparently.
The debate about WordPress' status has been raging for years now. Is it still just a blogging platform, or has it grown into a what can be described as a CMS?
It's a touchy subject for some, but I've always failed to see why. Today, I'm going to take you through my thought process regarding the debate, and why I believe WordPress is a CMS, whether people like it or not.
But more importantly, I'll discuss why – at the end of the day – the label barely even matters.

<h2>Uniquely Positioned</h2>
Thanks to WordPress' incredible popularity, it has evolved in ways which other platform haven't.
<a href="http://w3techs.com/technologies/details/cm-wordpress/all/all" target="_blank">According to W3Techs</a>, WordPress is used by 60.6% of all the websites whose content management system we know. That's around 22.9% of all websites.
Unsurprisingly, WordPress has a massive community with members contributing to the sea of themes and plugins every day. Many of these contributions give WordPress brand new abilities. In fact, with some straightforward theme and plugin selection, you can build anything from real estate websites to online communities with WordPress.
Relevant to this, you can check out one of my previous articles, where I discussed how <a href="/wordpress-jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none/" target="_blank"> WordPress is the Jack of All Trades</a>.
This impressive flexibility and constant evolution puts WordPress in a unique position. It no longer occupies just the blogging niche. Instead, it has stretched itself out to be compatible with an extremely wide range of project types.
This stretching is what leads many to question WordPress' status as a CMS.
<h2>Modern Definitions Mean Little</h2>
As Mike Johnston, the founder of CMS Critic, <a href="/day-one-of-magnolia-conference-2014-personalization-apps-a-roundtable/" target="_blank"> pointed out at the Magnolia Conference 2014</a>, the term CMS has been polluted. Marketing teams from all over the world have thought up newer terms and fancier acronyms, changing people's view of what a CMS actually is.
Google's definition of choice though, taken from the Plone CMS website, hits the nail on the head:
<blockquote>“A content management system, or CMS, is a web application designed to make it easy for non-technical users to add, edit and manage a website.”</blockquote>
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_management_system" target="_blank">Wikipedia's definition </a> is extremely similar, and they are both definitions which we can all agree with.
In addition to that, It would be completely fair to say that both definitions describe WordPress fairly well.
The issue arises when the stripped down, true meaning of “CMS” is blown up with unnecessary jargon. In reality, those definitions hold very little weight, other than when they describe added marketing or administrative extras. The fact of the matter is, WordPress fits the definition of a CMS perfectly.
<h2>What They're Saying</h2>
WordPress began life as a blogging tool, and the voices which continue to label it as such have been loud for years. So, I wanted to highlight the other opinion held in this fiery debate.
Here are some notable names and interesting stances:
<blockquote>“WordPress deserves a place on most CMS selection shortlists.” – Janus Boye, CEO of <a href="https://www.boye-co.com/blog/2013/2/18/wordpress-the-most-used-cms-in-the-world-and-still-not-good-enough">Boye &amp; Co</a></blockquote>
<blockquote>“Anyone who says that WordPress isn’t a “real” CMS is smoking something strong.” – Jason Mark, Smashing Magazine </blockquote>
<blockquote>“While the engineers are debating the merits of WordPress for applications, savvy organizations skipped the debate and moved on to actually building applications on top of WordPress. Because it was easy. Because it was free. Because it was there and it was possible. Because they had too much to accomplish to wait around in committee.” – Chris Lema, WPEngine </blockquote>
I think the quotes are self-explanatory. WordPress is holding its own in the world of CMS, because it offers everything a CMS should offer.
<h2>What They're Doing</h2>
In case the quotes above haven't convinced you, I'd also like to point out some of WordPress' more notable deployments. Not to showcase WordPress, but to demonstrate that it isn't just the choice of smaller companies.
WordPress helps power the online presence of <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/" target="_blank"> NASA </a> , <a href="http://www.forbes.com/" target="_blank"> Forbes </a> , <a href="http://www.ted.com/" target="_blank"> TED </a> , <a href="http://www.bbcamerica.com/" target="_blank"> BBC America </a> , <a href="http://techcrunch.com/" target="_blank"> TechCrunch </a> and many more. Those are big names, using WordPress beyond it's originally intended blogging tool status. And it's serving them well.
Of course, this isn't to say that WordPress is always the best choice. Being a confirmed CMS doesn't automatically mean that it should be used for every project.
Now, I'm not in madly in love with WordPress at the expense of any other platform. Far from it.
In fact, I wouldn't recommend it to be used for large-scale enterprise projects. There are better alternatives out there, many of which sit comfortably within the CMS category. As recently discussed, <a href="/wordpress-joomla-and-drupal-are-not-the-best-cms/" target="_blank">there is no best CMS</a>, and it's extremely important to understand your needs before selecting one – WordPress included.
Unfortunately, just as there are great examples of WordPress being used where a “normal” CMS would usually be active, there are also many examples of where WordPress has been incorrectly chosen as the CMS of choice.
But does that mean WordPress isn't a CMS? Not at all.
<h2>Nothing to See Here</h2>
As previously mentioned, WordPress is the jack of all trades.
It isn't particularly amazing in any niche other than blogging, and it sacrifices being a powerhouse when it comes to things like digital asset management for the sake of simplicity. Yet at the same time, WordPress is a content management system, and a good one at that.
So, maybe it's time everyody got over it.
It may not be the most sophisticated CMS, but WordPress does everything a CMS needs to do, and then some. Going back to the actual definition, it's clear to see that WordPress fits right in.
For small and medium sized websites, WordPress is worthy of consideration. For the larger stuff, it's not as well equipped as others – but it is equipped. Just like with any other CMS in the world, some projects suit it better than others.
So, there's really not much to see here. Just another CMS that works well in some cases, and not so well in others.
And on that note, I'll end with extremely relevant quote from <a href="http://jboye.com/" target="_blank"> Janus Boye</a>:
<blockquote>“My advice to the CMS Experts among the readers and anyone else reading these lines would be to stop discussing whether WordPress qualifies to be considered a CMS and instead move on and consider WordPress where it makes sense.”</blockquote>

WordPress is a CMS (Whether You Like it or Not)

A few years back, there were a lot of marketers who loudly declared email marketing was a thing of the past. Yet, they were obviously wrong.
Email marketing is evolving as rapidly as the rest of technology, and helps ensure you get one of the highest returns on the resources you’re investing in your marketing efforts.
However, you know not every email is going to get opened. Some of them go straight to spam, and some are just ignored. And then BOOM, there’s the end of your email marketing campaign for that lead.
That’s why you’ve got to step up your game, and these four surefire tips for boosting your email marketing strategy are going to help you do exactly that.
<h2>Implement Effective Opt-In Options</h2>
In order to have effective email marketing campaigns you need…well…email list subscribers.
But, don’t go rushing out to buy lists. None of the people on those lists asked for you to send them content, and it’s hard for you to be sure they were okay with their information being shared with third parties.
If the people on your list are receiving content they didn’t sign up for, it’s very likely not relevant to them in any way. At best, they ignore it. At worst, it gets flagged as spam. If that happens too often, your brand reputation and server reputation will both take a hit.
Don’t let that happen.
Instead, build a healthy email list the right way:
<ul>
<li>Include incentivized email subscription opt-in forms on your website, complete with a compelling call-to-action. Placing the box near the top of the website is proven to be highly effective, and pop-up boxes can work well when done correctly. Let them know there is a CLEAR benefit to subscribing to your list and receiving your content.</li>
<li>Do some A/B split testing to determine if your particular website visitors respond best to single or double opt-in forms. Single forms don’t require the user to confirm their subscription, whereas double forms do. The former means you may end up with a lot of spam or false emails, and the latter means the user may completely forget to confirm. However, single forms are fast and convenient, and double forms are secure. This is why testing is important, as it helps you figure out what works best for you and your business.</li>
<li>Encourage your social media followers to sign up for your list, giving incentive such as giveaways, giftcards, whitepapers, eBooks, or other value-driven offers.</li>
</ul>
Remember: Quality is always better than quantity. You could have a list of a million followers, but they sure won’t do you any good if none of them are interested in your products or services. It would be better to have only a thousand subscribers that all want to purchase something from you.
Having a healthy list of prospective customers will boost your open rates and, in return, your sales.
<h2>Optimize for Mobile</h2>
If you haven’t taken the time to optimize your email marketing campaigns for mobile, you’re missing out on HUGE opportunities for building up your list and boosting your sales.
Over the past few years, <a href="https://www.impactbnd.com/blog/mobile-marketing-statistics-for-2016">mobile email opens have increased by about 180%</a>, and this number will only continue to grow as people check their email several times throughout their day.
That may sound great, but those opens aren’t going to do you any good if your emails and website aren’t optimized for mobile. You want the messages to be well-formatted to work on a variety of mobile devices, and the emails should load quickly and be instantly responsive.
When you create your next email marketing campaign, test the message on several different devices before you send it out to your list. Why waste your time on creating a great campaign if it’s not going to do anything to further your business?
Give that mobile optimized campaign a significant boost by adding texting to your business communications.
You’ve undoubtedly seen this as a consumer yourself: “Text COFEE to 55-555 for exclusive discounts from your favorite coffee shop.”
Encourage your subscribers to visit your site for exclusive offers and <a href="http://www.pardot.com/blog/content-marketing-101-creating-content-sells/">value-driven content</a>, using text to give your campaign a boost.
<h2>Add Video Content</h2>
Video content has rapidly expanded over the past few years, though incorporating video content in email marketing campaigns is still fairly new.
But, it’s no secret that consumers and internet users love videos – and that interest isn’t just limited to cute videos of cats playing piano.
In fact, <a href="https://fortunelords.com/youtube-statistics/">there are roughly 1,300,000,000 videos on YouTube alone</a>, with nearly 5 billion videos being watched on there every single day within an average month.
According to an <a href="http://www.emarketer.com/Article/Product-Videos-All-Cool-Brands-Making-Them/1012536">eMarketer report</a>, four times as many consumers prefer watching videos about products or services they are considering purchasing, as opposed to just reading about them.
<a href="http://www.businessnewsdaily.com/7643-improve-email-marketing.html">Adding videos to your email marketing messages</a> tend to increase click-through rates up to three times and can bring about a return on investment boost of 40 percent.
Sounds great, right?
While there are some email systems that are unable to support video, you can just send an animated GIF thumbnail in the email message that has a button that looks just like a video. When that person goes to play it, they get redirected to a landing page that has the embedded video set to autoplay.
Not only have you just directed traffic to your site, but you’ve also kept them engaged with your content and seen your products.
<h2>Have Effective Website Design</h2>
If your site isn’t laid out in a way that lends itself well to following a sales funnel, it’s going to be pretty hard to get the conversions you need to boost sales or gain more list subscribers.
The design is actually the very foundation of a business website – if it’s too hard to navigate or too cluttered, people are just going to jump ship and head somewhere else.
You’re essentially driving your customers right into the arms of your competitor. But, by having your site laid out in a way that is conducive to sales, you can implement other aspects of email marketing, like your blog.
Once they get a feel for <a href="http://www.alexiapbullard.com/pet-b2b-blog/content-marketing-tech-companies">the type of content you produce on your blog</a>, they know what to expect from you and you can ensure them the exclusive content they will receive in emails is even better.
If your blog content is already great, imagine what the exclusive content has to offer them!

Email marketing is far from dead and, as technology increases, so does the various ways by which you can drive traffic to your site and grow a healthy email list.
As you can see, email marketing is truly the cornerstone to growing your business, regardless of which industry or niche your brand is part of.

Selz Gives Users More Uploading Power

Hannon Hill has released Cascade Server 7.4 and today, we're going to take you through some of the new features of their latest release.
Cascade Server 7.4 introduces some key new features such as in-context editing and stale content reporting to name a few.
<h2>In-Context Editing in Cascade Server 7.4</h2>
With Cascade Server 7.4, In-context editing as been introduced into the CMS. What this does is provide a more customizable and simplified editing interface for content contributors. What is especially nice here is that users may determine which field(s) should be editable for specific piece(s) of real estate on a page. Users may also determine which groups can edit those specific fields on the page.
To identify areas that have been marked as editable, an icon that looks like a pencil is shown:

Clicking on an editable field will bring up the editing interface:

Normally, making changes such as setting which fields should be editable is a complicated task. Not so with Cascade Server 7.4, the interface for setting these options is easy to use for most non-technical of users as well.

<h2>Stale Content Reporting</h2>
Nobody likes stale content and to make sure you are on top of it, Cascade Server 7.4 has introduced Stale Content Reporting. How does it work? Let's take a look.
To start off, this new version of the CMS introduces a Stale Content Dashboard that shows a graphic depicting a summary of your site's stale content.

The dashboard graphics also alert you to content that has upcoming review dates or has not been updated in some time.
There is also a new Stale Content tab on the dashboard that lists the stale content items. Using built in filter options, you can then personalize what you consider to be stale. (Any personalizations you make here are reflected on the dashboard overview as well.)

In order to take action, you are given the opportunity to set up email notifications to let the content creators (or others) know that their content requires updating or review. If the content passes their inspection, you can set up a new review date down the road as well.

<h2>Moving to Cascade Server from another CMS</h2>
It happens all the time. You are on a specific CMS and down the road, you decide something else might be better suited to your needs. Should you feel the need to move to Cascade Server, you are now in luck. With their new migration tools, the process just got easier.
As part of their push to make migration easier, Hannon Hill has introduced a legacy CMS-agnostic, HTML-based migration tool, which means that you don’t even need to export your web content from your existing system (as some CMSs make it more cumbersome than others). All you need to do is copy your web files, either directly from the server or by using a copier such as HTTrack.
The process is fairly simple, you set up your page types in Cascade Server and use the migration tool to map the appropriate HTML sections to the corresponding fields in the CMS using a wizard like interface.

<a href="http://www.liferay.com">Liferay</a> CEO, Bryan Cheung, today announced a new product from Liferay that is due out in Q4 of 2010. This new product is being called LESA.
LESA stands for Liferay Enterprise Support Application and is a tool that allows support engineers within companies to provide exceptional enterprise support for their clients.
Liferay plans to use this product in-house to allow their customers to rate and rank the responses from their support team.
LESA came about after Liferay had been using Atlassian's JIRA product as a support platform within their company for a number of years and now, with the release of Liferay 6EE, they realized they were able to completely rebuild this system with their own tools.
LESA also has effective built in metrics which allows for more real time analytics for managers and company professionals.
Looking at the product on the projector as Bryan is showing it off, it looks like an incredibly nice and clean interface that provides exactly what companies who use/need support software but don't want to be overwhelmed with too much data on the screen at one time.

MODX Cloud is the hosted version of MODX, which allows users to build MODX websites using MODX's servers, optimized infrastructure, automatic backup management, and so forth.
This update, coming a few weeks after the arrival of <a href="http://modx.com/blog/2014/07/22/revolution-2.3.1/" target="_blank">MODX Revolution 2.3.1</a>. Unsurprisingly, this update now brings 2.3.1 functionality to MODX Cloud.
The MODX team have said that this update will enable users to save more time and benefit from improved security.

MODX Cloud Updated

LightCMS have once again taken some tools to their user interface, giving their Element UI new functionality and a sleeker look.This interface update comes just weeks after LightCMS revealed a new <a href="/lightcms-announces-wysiwyg-editor-enhancements/">WYSIWYG editor</a>. It's also the latest in a flurry of updates the website builder has been releasing for the last few months.The Element UI interface has been enhanced, added to and beautified. Plus, displaying elements in multiple locations is now easier than ever. As usual, LightCMS have given their users a heads up, opting to implement these changes on September 2nd, 2014. So, let's take a look at what's coming.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/lightcms.jpg" alt="LightCMS" /><h2>Elements Everywhere</h2>First of all, the LightCMS Element Toolbars have been redesigned.Instead of seeing black bars at the top of each element, the new toolbars are more modern and sleek. They're designed to blend into your site while still serving their main purpose of marking your elements and providing access to the element menus.The element menus themselves have also been revamped, sporting fresh new custom icons.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/2014_9-elementbars.jpg" alt="LightCMS" />The LightCMS team have also updated the Add Element bar found at the bottom of each editable region.Previously, the Add Element bar was a thick, black bar with the same weight as the Element Toolbars, making it difficult to distinguish between the top and bottom regions.To solve that issue, the add element button sits inside a thin line to mark the location of where you can add elements when in edit mode. It's a small design tweak, but the difference is significant. It's more natural, and makes editing a little less stressful.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/2014_9-addbutton.jpg" alt="LightCMS" />Perhaps the most notable change though, is the new Add Element modal.Clicking the Add Element button now brings up a beautifully-designed, responsive modal with fresh, custom icons representing each of the available elements. All you need to do is click (or touch) the desired element, and it will immediately be placed into your page.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/2014_9-modal.jpg" alt="LightCMS" />The modal is responsive across all devices, and if you're a click counter, you'll notice that the new modal requires two fewer clicks for every element you add. Now that's helpful.<h2>Sharing is Caring</h2>Furthermore, LightCMS has also produced an update for their Copy Element functionality.For starters, they're now calling it “Share” instead of “Copy” – but they've also made some functionality changes too.Previously, when you copied an element, you had to select the element you wanted from a drop-down list that included every single element on your site. This list of elements could get very long, making it gradually inefficient time-wise.The solution comes in the form of a new “Is Shareable” property on the advanced settings of every element.<img src="https://cmscritic.com/ms-content/uploads/2023/08/isshareable.jpg" alt="LightCMS" />Now, only those elements that are marked as shareable are included in the share element list.
